Is Live The Death Of Google?

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Dig into any self-labeled SEO forum and you’ll probably find some neatly organized categories along the lines of Google, Yahoo, and MSN . Checking the amount of activity in each will reveal the inclusion of Yahoo and especially MSN seems to be a mere courtesy on the part of the forum founders. Microsoft has been trying to change this for some time now, and the newly branded Windows Live is their latest attempt to do so. Will all those vacant MSN forums be lively any time soon? The short answer is no, read on to find out why.

Live.com is many things, including a search engine, customizable web portal, and the latest attempt by Microsoft to dig into Google’s market share in search. Its opening page is a simple one, in keeping with the expectations built by Google, providing several options and an invitation for you to personalize it as your own web portal.

Most of the features on the site are functional; while a few remain in the development stage and some are in between. Only Passport members can fully customize the basic Live page with RSS feeds and gadgets , much like Google’s portal page with Google Accounts. The basic, un-customized page offers a search bar with the options of Web, Images, News, Local and QnA.

The Web search performs much as other search engines, only it serves ads from MSN’s new ad network instead of Adwords. It does offer a related search section, something Google has yet to implement, but a standard feature of Ask.com for a while now.

The relevancy of the results, is, as always, a matter of debate. MSN’s Search performs ably in many regards, but one can’t help but wonder if the larger index Google provides means you’re missing something. Relevancy is undeniably important, though. It is one of the core reasons a searcher might actually make a switch, should his current engine of choice let him down too many times.

The Images search is an improvement on the Google and Yahoo technology, in that it offers dynamic thumbnail display in a pageless layout. Pass your cursor over a thumbnail and it will enlarge, with a brief description and the URL where the image can be found. The interface is intuitive and really feels innovative. The thumbnails can be dynamically resized, and the scratchpad can quickly create collections by drag-and-drop. The primary drawback to this very innovate feature is that it will respond slowly for those on dial-up and with weaker machines.

The News Search is a direct search function that lacks the top stories aggregator of Google News. Type in a word and you will get back a search list that is drawn from mainstream news outlets, which have stories that use your search term in the first sentence or two. The Local button will give you an interactive map of the area where hits for your search term are found. There’s little innovative here, but the presentation of the map is nice. It offers similar variations on the route, aerial, and hybrid graphical display popularized by Google Maps.

Windows Live Q&A allows you to post a question to the Windows Q&A universe and see who has an answer. This system is still in beta, so the technical specifics may change. Users post a question that is then open for 4 days to responses. At the end of the 4 day period, voting commences on the answers provided. This feature currently has no Google analog, though Yahoo has a similar service.

Additional Features- Betas

A variety of betas for Live services are available through ideas.live.com, the MS equivalent of Google Labs.

The Windows Live Mail is an in-house mail service that provides you with two gigabytes of storage and an updated version of what appears to be Outlook Express. It has some desktop features and keyboard hotkeys, new methods of sorting and categorizing, but nothing terribly radical. Windows Live Mail Desktop is a program that allows you to manage multiple e-mail accounts, including AOL, Gmail and others. It also manages newsgroups and RSS feeds.

Microsoft Live Office will be a web hosting service designed to provide you with a basic business website and domain name. Google Page Creator has tread this territory before, but was aimed at personal use, whereas Microsoft, with the Office brand, seems to be targeting businesses.

Windows Live Shopping and Windows Live Product Search are both as advertised: attempts to provide web-wide searches for products and shopping opportunities. The product search gives a dynamic display that can range from a simple text list to a thumbnail layout that borrows from the innovate image search layout. Searches can be refined by seller, brand, and most interestingly, related term , which provides a tag cloud of the kind popular with social bookmarking sites today.

Windows Live Academic, mentioned above, will provide search opportunities in thousands of academic and research journals. If their database has some heft to it, this will be a great addition to the search process. It remains to be seen if this academic resource will rival Google Scholar. Like Google Scholar, the results can be frustrating as many provide links only to abstracts or excerpts. Access to the full text of such results requires purchase or subscription to the journal in which they were originally published.

Conclusions

Live.com’s primary innovative feature is the image search, and even that has issues with slower connections. So far, virtually everything else served up by Microsoft has been done by Google, or other search engines, before. Even if Microsoft was able to do it better , it will have a hard time convincing existing users to switch from Google, as there is little incentive to do so unless these services are done so much better. That is not currently the case. Microsoft merely offers an alternative with Windows Live, not an indispensable alternative.

The Language of Credit Cards

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Like most Americans, you probably have at least one credit card if not more. Each time you approach the cash register, you may find yourself reaching in your wallet for that slab of plastic. You might even call it a reflex. In this day and age, credit has become a normality in our daily lives.

Practically every store accepts credit cards and many vendors prefer credit cards over personal checks. Banking online has never been easier with instantaneous pending transactions available just seconds after your card is swiped. However, charging through credit is not all fun and games, especially when it’s due date time. Many fall into the trap of only making the minimum payment each month, falling into even deeper debt.

One problem eager spenders face is signing up for a credit card they feel has low rates and three months down the road, are hindered by rising APR percentages. What exactly is an APR percentage? Believe it or not, some people get into credit card debt because they don’t understand the basics of credit card lingo.

Make Sure You’re Aware of the Following before choosing a credit card:

• APR: Annual Percentage Rate or the rate of interest you’ll have to pay if you have a balance carryover, transfer balances from another card or take out a cash advance.

• There are such things as penalty APR’s, where your percentage increases if you make late payments.

• Introductory APR’s-Your APR percentage rate is bound to rise after a select introductory time span.

• Tiered APR’s-Depending on amount spent, different percentages will be applied.

• What is a grace period? The amount of time you have to fully pay your bill without being charged.

• Minimum finance charges-If you spend less than the minimum finance charge, you will be charged the minimum amount required.

• Annual fee-Some cards charge you monthly; Some quarterly or yearly-This is a fee just for holding that credit card.

Some credit card companies offer fixed APR credit cards, or cards whose percentages don’t change. If they do change, the company is required to notify their customers before making the switch. Cards that have variable rates can change at times, so cardholders should monitor their percentages.

6StarReviews.com reported that one fixed APR card, Pulaski Bank Gold Visa, even offers cardholders special incentives such as free auto rental & travel insurance, as well as free emergency services. Those who like stability and who may not have the best credit history may want to choose from one of several options of fixed APR credit cards.

Grant Basics for Beginners

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Beginners to the granting process, whether for business or non-profit, are often intimidated by the hard work that it takes to write a grant application. It is hard work and it should be. No grantor wants their money wasted on a project that has poor planning and little or no effort invested into it by a grant seeker. The key to the granting process is getting organized and stop procrastinating. Here are some helpful hints to get you started.

* WRITE

Everyday you should be writing down your ideas and thoughts about your project. Saving them on a computer to a word file is preferable so you may edit, spell check, cut and paste, and reorganize them without having to continually retype.

* FIND A MENTOR

You should seek out and solicit the advice of a successful businessman or community leader whose judgment you respect. Find someone who is able to devote a few free hours a week to give you the advice and help you need with the basic fundamentals of developing a professional business plan.

* RESEARCH

Grantors already know the type of project you are contemplating. Researching the feasibilities of the success of your project and conveying that to the grantors is your responsibility. The time you spend working on your project and the information you acquire is an asset to you personally because knowledge and information is a powerful tool in business or non-profit grant seeking.

* START NOW

Whether you have a finished plan or not the time to start your grant seeking process is now. You can always work on your plan as you go. Imagine investing 6 months of your time into a project and have everything ready to go except for your grant application and then you find out that you missed the closing date of an eligible grant for your project by a couple of days. Just because you wanted everything to be perfect, now would have to wait an entire year for that particular grant application to reopen.

Notice that the letters of each hint do not spell out some cute acronym. Memorizing a list of steps just to complete a program that may or may not assist you in your goal is counterproductive. Always strive to achieve your grant through perseverance and patience. Nothing substantial is ever achieved overnight or through just plain dumb luck.

For a list of grant programs that I have personally researched that will assist you in achieving your goal, please visit www.grantsformoney.com http://www.grantsformoney.com

Eyebrows - Tips For Tweezing

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Eyebrows - Tips For Tweezing: To minimize the pain, numb the eyebrow area first either with a baby’s teething pain preparation or numbing toothache preparation or even a little ice.

The hair can be softened first with a hair conditioner or shaving cream.

Steam your eyebrows with a hot washcloth for five minutes or tweeze right after a hot shower to open the pores so the hair comes out more easily.

Invest in a professional pair of tweezers so you have a clean, sharp pair each time. If you are serious about tweezing, buying a good quality pair is essential.

Use natural light wherever possible.

First clean up the area between the eyebrows by plucking any stray hairs.

Pull the skin taut and remove hairs as close as possible to the root.

Pluck in the direction of the growth.

Shape your eyebrows by plucking from underneath rather than from above to create a natural arch.

To close the pores of the skin after plucking, use an astringent or soothe irritated skin by applying warm petroleum jelly.

Shaping: 3 Steps

1. First thin the eyebrow, then slowly define the arch. The arch should reach the highest point above the middle of the iris.

2. To determine where the eyebrows should begin and end, hold a pencil vertically against the nose. Where the pencil meets the eyebrow above the nose should be the starting point.

3. Next, with the pencil still held against the nose, tilt it diagonally so that it rests against the far corner of the eye. That is the outer point where the eyebrow should end.

Changing the Shape

To avoid tweezing into a shape you later regret, first use a white eyeliner pencil to color in the areas under your eyebrows which you think should be plucked.

If you don’t like the shape, remove the white eyeliner and redraw. Once your are satisfied with the shape, tweeze the hairs in the white area.

Mike Jones is a writer and webmaster with over 10 years experience. His recommendation: Recommendation: To reduce the need for tweezing eyebrows, apply Kalo Hair Inhibitor Lotion with a cotton swab right after tweezing. This significantly reduces the hair growth.

Advance Payday Loan - Urgent Finance at Your Terms

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The month has progressed a bit and you already are done with the salary you got and are waiting for next paycheque for all those necessary expenses to meet. But now there is no need for delaying the works just because you do not have cash in hands. You are a salaried person and so you can take advantage of the very salary you draw each month in taking urgent finance. Take the option of advance payday loan.

Advance payday loan is given to the loan seeker in advance and the loan is returned back when the borrower receives the next paycheque. Advance payday loan thus is essentially a very short term loan taken for only one or two week’s repayment period. This is basically an unsecured loan as no collateral is usually offered to the lender for such a short term. The borrowed amount also is usually so smaller that any collateral turns out to be unpractical.

However, the lender wants to make sure that the loan will be paid back in time. To do so, lender would like to take note of borrower’s employment, monthly income and financial standing if any. Often lenders take a post-dated cheque from the borrower that contains borrowed amount and lenders fee. At the due date the cheque is deposited in borrower’s account for withdrawal of the amount and the loan is paid off.

Advance payday loan is approved fast by the lenders. The loan is in the borrower’s account within 24 hours of applying for it.

You can borrow £100 to £1000 as advance payday loan. Greater loan depends on higher monthly income and good credit of the borrower. Because of its short repayment duration, lender charge higher interest rate. But the relief for the borrower is that he pays only the interest during the loan period and principal amount is paid back through the next paycheque. Your bad credit is not a major issue for lenders. The interest rate and lender’s fee is so high that it discourages any payment default. Lenders are at minimum risk usually while offering advance payday loan and therefore they often do not take seriously the bad credit history of borrower.

You can avail advance payday loan at comparatively lower interest rate provided you compare different lenders who have showcased their loan packages on internet. After you have settle for the suitable lender apply online to him. Your priority is getting the loan fast and online lenders do that in no time.

Make sure to pay off the loan in time to avoid further payments on higher interest rate and fee. Once the loan is paid off, your credit score also goes higher.

Enzymes And Probiotics Are Keys To Health And Digestion

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

The gastrointestinal system, a complex network of organs and glands which extracts nutrients and water from the food that we eat so that they can be used by the body, processes the food in six phases. First, it mentally prepares the stomach for the meal that we are about to eat. Then, it takes food into the body, followed by moving that food through the GI tract. Next, it breaks down the food with both mechanical and chemical processes and then absorbs the digestive food into the vascular and lymphatic systems for distribution to the cells. Finally, the indigestible substances and waste products are eliminated from the body. Digestion itself is divided into two categories, those being mechanical and chemical. Mechanical digestion is the physical movement that assists chemical digestion. After the initial breakdown by chewing, food is churned by the smooth muscles of the stomach and small intestine, allowing it to mix with the enzymes that start the chemical reactions. Chemical digestion, on the other hand, is a series of chemical reactions that break down large carbohydrate, lipid, and protein molecules into smaller molecules that can enter blood vessels. In order for optimal digestion to occur, all of these processes must work together. If any part of the system under or over-performs, physical problems will most likely occur.

Enzymes are extremely important to digestion because without them digestion could not take place and the food we eat could not be absorbed into our bodies to be utilized. Enzymes, which are complex proteins that are produced by living cells and can be found in digestive juices, start chemical reactions in the body. They act on food by breaking it down into simpler components that can be used by the body for energy. If digestive enzymes don’t work adequately, inadequate digestion will result which is thought to be a significant cause of food allergies. When food is not digested completely it can initiate allergic reactions in the body, causing inflammation and immune sensitivity and lead to chronic inflammatory conditions and certain types of arthritis.

There are many enzymes that are part of the digestion process. However, there are three main enzymes that are involved in digestion. These are amylase, protease, and lipase. Other enzymes, including sucrase, lactase, and maltase are very important for secondary function in digestion. Amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates, can be found in saliva and pancreatic secretions. It initiates digestion of dietary starches and breaks down starch into several simpler molecules. Disaccharides including lactose, maltose, and sucrose, are broken down into simple sugars by lactase, maltase, and sucrase. These simple sugars can be absorbed through the small intestine to help with energy production. Proteases, which break down protein, cause protein digestion to begin in the stomach. The stomach’s acidic environment activates the protease pepsin, which is deactivated in the alkaline environment of the intestine. Proteins are further broken down by pancreatic enzymes into amino acids in the intestine. Lipases break down fat into essential fatty acids. Fat digestion speeds up in the second part of the small intestine with the help of the pancreatic lipases. These lipase enzymes are responsible for the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Animal enzymes, especially those that are derived from pig enzymes are very similar to human digestive enzymes. Animal enzymes are much more sensitive to pH extremes; therefore many animal enzyme formulas sold as dietary supplements contain bicarbonates to protect the enzymes from stomach acid. Plant derived enzymes, on the other hand; come from fungal and botanical sources. They are able to survive a broad range of pH differences and provide a larger range of activity in the gastrointestinal tract. Plant enzymes are often preferred by those who wish to avoid animal-derived products.

Along with these, there are many other dietary supplements that are effective in supporting digestive health, specifically probiotic supplements, which offer numerous health benefits. Probiotics are non-toxic, live bacteria that are necessary for life and do not cause disease. The most commonly studied probiotics are those from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium group. Because these two probiotic groups have the ability to break down lactose, they are known as lactic acid bacteria. These probiotics can be found in many foods and dietary supplements. In our intestines we have colonies of bacteria called microflora, which is associated with good health when they are normal. However, changes in intestinal health are often associated with a weakened immune function and an imbalance in the natural microflora is often linked with various diseases such as yeast infections and colon cancer. By orally ingesting probiotic bacteria, we help to support the composition and metabolic activities of the microflora found in the large intestine. These microflora help the digestive process through fermentation, protection against disease-causing bacteria, and stimulation of certain immune system components. Probiotic bacteria have also demonstrated anti-cancer properties in many studies. Results have shown that people taking L. acidophilus fermented milk have a much larger number of intestinal Lactobacilli, which in turn decreases the risk factors associated with colon cancer.

Lactose is an important sugar that is converted to lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria. Many people have lactose intolerance as a result of genetics, gastrointestinal disease, or a decline in the amount of intestinal lactase levels that are associated with aging. Lactose intolerance is caused by an inability to digest lactose because of a failure of small intestine cells to produce lactase (the enzyme needed to digest lactose). Those who are deficient in lactase accumulate non-absorbed lactose in the GI tract, drawing water and electrolytes into the gut. This leads to bloating, cramping, diarrhea, and malabsorption of nutrients. Lactic acid bacteria support the breakdown of lactose by enhancing the activity of lactase, therefore improving digestion and tolerance. Although probiotic bacteria usually survive passage through the stomach, they do not permanently colonize in the body. Therefore, to ensure optimal support of the digestive system, these probiotic bacteria need to be replenished. To do so, they should be ingested regularly in order for their health-promoting effects to continue. Digestive enzymes and probiotics can be found at your friendly online vitamin store.

Buffalo Bills 2006 Schedule

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Buffalo who? That’s right. After going to, and losing, four straight Super Bowls, the Bills have been like a light bulb that keeps flickering as its dying off. Finally, that light went off in Bills camp. In 2001, they won three games. In 2002, they looked like they turned the corner when they won 8. In 2003, it was back to the same old struggling Bills as they won 6. In 2004, they again looked interesting when they went 9-7. Last season, they struggled to win 5 games. Anyone else see a pattern here? If the pattern holds up, the Bills are going to win many games this season. Could they be 10-6?

History watchers will not be so quick as to write off the Buffalo Bills this season. Their schedule, however, says we should probably brace for a 5-6 win season out of the Bills. During the offseason, they lost some key players, perhaps. The potentially key losses were Justin Bannan to Baltimore, Lawyer Milloy to Atlanta, Mike Williams to Jacksonville, Sam Adams to the Bengals, Mark Campbell to the Saints, Eric Moulds to Houston and Trey Teague to the rival Jets.

However, it wasn’t all losses. They picked up many players this offseason as well. Among the new Buffalo Bills players were Craig Nall, Andre Davis, Robert Royal, Larry Tripplett, Matt Bowen, Melvin Fowler, Matt Morgan, Kiwaukee Thomas, James Bethea, Aaron Gibson, Peerless Price, Tutan Reyes and Anthony Thomas. Let’s take a look at their moderate schedule this season.

Week 1: @ New England Patriots
Week 2: @ Miami Dolphins
Week 3: New York Jets
Week 4: Minnesota Vikings
Week 5: @ Chicago Bears
Week 6: @ Detroit Lions
Week 7: New England Patriots
Week 8: Bye
Week 9: Green Bay Packers
Week 10: @ Indianapolis Colts
Week 11: @ Houston Texans
Week 12: Jacksonville Jaguars
Week 13: San Diego Chargers
Week 14: @ New York Jets
Week 15: Miami Dolphins
Week 16: Tennessee Titans
Week 17: @ Baltimore Ravens

That’s a pretty tough schedule for a team that was 5-11 last season. You can pick out about 5-6 games on their schedule that are against teams right on par with the Bills. The other 10-11 are against teams that should be at least slightly above their level. Four of their eight road games are against teams that should be good to very good this season-Bears, Dolphins, Patriots and Colts.
