Christmas - How to Get Your Money Back on Track and Alleviate Money Stresses!

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

In today’s world we know that tremendous personal, relationship and business stress can be related back to money stresses. We also know that Christmas can be a time where added money stresses can be a real problem for many families. However, with these 6 great money tips put into practice you can start to alleviate money stress and move towards a healthier and happier financial position and a happier life generally!

Tip 1. - Develop a ‘money’ awareness. You need to focus on the money that comes into your life and that flows out of your life. This means writing down and tracking every single cent that you spend. Get a note pad and for 2 weeks write down the date, time, what you spent, what you spent it on, why you spent it, how you felt once you spent it, whether you need it plus write what money came in and what you put into a savings account.

Tip 2. - Develop a savings plan. You need a savings plan. Preferably have an amount automatically debited from your account to a specially set up savings account each pay day. The idea is to save a minimum of 10% of what comes in. Open a savings account where you need 24 hours before they will allow you to withdraw from it. This will help you to stay on track. The idea is to use this money for investments such as purchasing shares or for a deposit for a property. You will be amazed at how you will not miss this money and you will learn how to budget on the rest of your money. Read The Richest Man in Babylon which is a timeless classic about money skills. It has changed countless lives! You can even read this little book to your children and they too will learn an abundance of life lessons.

Tip 3. - Learn how to budget. This may sound simple yet it is profound. Learning how to budget and tricks to keep you on track with your budget can literally change your life for the better on many fronts. This is a learnt skill. A good idea is to find someone who can mentor you with a budget. Find someone who you feel comfortable to share your financial situation with and who is skillful with money. Don’t learn from someone who is not financially abundant. Learn from someone who is successful and can show you what not to do as well as what to do. I highly recommend you book in a session with a good accountant who can help you plan a start-up budget, help you monitor and assess as you go. Having someone to be accountable to will help you in the early days to keep on track.

Tip 4 - Develop a positive attitude towards money. You have heard this saying ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’ or ‘money is the root of all evil’. Well it’s time to change the negative self talk. It does not serve you. This type of thinking will hold you back and sabotage you. You need to focus on the positive aspects of money such as money ’supports’ a happy, healthy life. You need to prevent self sabotage so you will not go off on a tangent and spend your money and not stick to a budget. I highly recommend that you get yourself a copy of Michele Blood’s ‘Success’ cd from www.musivation.com and play it in your car, when going for a walk or have it on in the background at home. Michele has put positive words to music. Her music will help to change your self sabotage by helping to change your thoughts to more positive supportive ones. She has a ‘money’ song that you’ll want to play every day and reap the benefits! Her music goes straight into your subconscious and that is the area of your mind you need to effect. So do yourself a favor and buy yourself her cd as a Christmas present for yourself and start developing a positive money mindset today!

Tip 5. - addressing your fear of money - remember that money is really nothing more than energy that you can harness or let it run by you. Do you ignore your money? You do this by not knowing where it goes and thus you loose its power. Often when we have been ignoring our money we end up in a mind-set of thinking of and being fearful of not having enough money. Once you start to pay attention to your money your fears will start to drop off. You will know where it comes from and where it goes. Then you learn how you can leverage it. You will, once you learn the skills and put them into practice, find that you have more money than you thought possible. Your fears are coming from a lack of knowledge and understanding of how to harness the energy of money. This is a skill you can learn. Researchers today tell us that it is crucial to avoid being fearful about any lack of money because what we focus on builds stronger neural circuits in your brain. What you focus on expands. You don’t want more stress built up because of a focus on the fear of money. Remember that fear stands for ‘false evidence appearing real’. So focus on learning how to harness the energy of money and your fears will drop away.

Tip 6 - Develop an investment strategy. This is a skill that needs to be learnt. You can go to a local college or find a group who can teach you. Find a strategy that you like then focus on learning everything you can about that one strategy. You will build confidence and know how to develop a good investment strategy in that area for your future. Don’t think that handing over your hard earned money to someone else to invest it for you is the answer. You need to know the basics at the very least so you can make an informed decision. Again knowledge will give you confidence to make supportive decisions for the growth of your investments.

Start putting the above tips into practice and you will find that your world will start to change. It takes courage and commitment to make positive changes in your life. You can do it. Make a decision today to start. Find people who can support you and guide you and your future days and future festive days will be less stressful and merrier!

3 Important Dog Training Tips

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Dog training can be a grueling process but if done correctly, it can be very rewarding in the end. Whether you have a dog in the city, the suburbs, or the country, a trained dog is always easier to handle, especially when it comes to social situations.

1. Be fair with corrections.

Be sure that your dog comprehends what you want before you correct him for not doing it. Also, let the punishment fit the crime. A correction should not be a release of anger on your dog. Instead, a correction is a way to communicate with your dog, a way to foster in him a clear understanding of his place in your human pack. At its mildest level, a correction can be the absence of praise. Before jerking the leash, remember to ask yourself if you’re being fair.

2. Be positive.

As a dog’s trainer, you must have the right attitude. Praise that is well timed and appropriate is essential to your dog’s learning process. If all that you ever do is say no! to your dog, your relationship isn’t going to be a very good one. How would you like to work with a boss like that?

Praise is cheap and free - so use alot of it! Use praise when your dog attempts to get it right. Use it more when your dog is successful in his task. Use it when your dog pays attention to you, because that’s the first step in the training. It’s not necessary to be some gushing goof, but you should let your dog know when you’re proud of him.

3. You and your dog are on the same team.

Don’t think of training your dog as a you versus your dog endeavor. Instead, think about the two of you being on the same team, albeit in different positions. Just as if you were the quarterback, you call the plays. Winning is a team effort. It’s just a matter of your dog learning the plays first, and you’re the one to teach him.

As a team, you will need to spend time together. Bring him into your life. Let him sleep in a crate in your bedroom, practice his sits in the kitchen. The more opportunities for interaction and practice you have, the faster and more reliably your dog will perform.

Bob Baldwin Standing Tall Jazz Music CD Review

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Standing Tall is the latest release from Jazz Star Bob Baldwin, and is another winner from this talented musician.

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce thats exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.

Standing Tall has a pleasantly varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. Theyre all here.

If you’re even mildly into Jazz music you’ll enjoy this album. Overall Standing Tall is an a great release. I give it my double thumbs up. You will not be disappointed with one single track.

Overall Standing Tall is outstanding from beginning to end. One of those CDs that after a few listens the songs are just etched into your memory. A must have for the Jazz fan. Really spectacular from beginning to end.

While this entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 3 - Too Late, track 10 - She’s Single, Ready To Mingle, and track 6 - Where Are You Going?.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore […as in Stuck On REpeat ] is track 8 - Everybody Loves The Sunshine. What a nice track!

The Pros of Juicing

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

This is the 1st in a series of articles looking at the benefits of juicing.

So authorise us start with a definition. Juicing is the means of extracting juice from fruit, vegetables or wheatgrass so that a drink can be made. Hence, the drink is called juice and this can be consumed on its own or blended into a smoothie.

So why would you want to juice? There are many pros of juicing.

Firstly, consuming fruit can be tiresome. Especially if you have children, getting them to eat fruit can be a nightmare. Juicing means that you can beverage fruit rather than consuming. Now that is quick and fun. If you have children, allow them do the juicing (supervise them though) so they can see how it works.

Secondly, you cannot exactly mix combinations of fruits. When you juice though, you can concoct any combination you like. Have you tried spicy apple juice? Just add a bit of root ginger to the juice (blend the two together) and serve over ice! How easy is that?

Thirdly, it is much easier to get closer to the 5-a-day target you should be aiming for. You should eat 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables per day. That can be difficult if you don’t like eating fruit. Drinking fruit juice can make that much easier!

Finally, juicing is a great way to ‘hide’ particular fruits or vegetables. For instance, if you child does not like tomatoes, why not blend a tomato with two apples? The taste of the tomato should not be distinct yet the nutrients will be there.

Some people do this with celery and cucumbers also.

Jumping Dogs: It Might be More than an Excited Greeting

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Down Spot! Down Princess! Down Rover! Down Peaches! … Down Comet! Down Cupid! Down Donder and Blitzen! I’ve heard that command many times, from many desperate dog owners, directed at many determined dogs. The jumping dog is a universal problem, but a better understanding of what’s motivating the behavior can go a long way toward addressing it.

Dogs jump up on people for two reasons mainly. First, and probably most common, is the jumping dog who greets this way. This can simply be from over-excitement - they “jump for joy.” Dog behaviorists also point out that this is partly instinctive. Dogs lick each others faces when they want to give a super nice greeting, a likely reflection of lower ranking members of a wolf pack licked the faces of the higher ranking wolves returning from the hunt. In addition, puppies in a den jump over one another for their mother’s attention. More specifically, they target her face, as a mother typically regurgitates food for her litter, another reflection of the wolf pack.

Also, this behavior can be positively reinforced during greeting times, when a jumping dog is met by an excited owner who immediately praises, feeds, walks and/or plays with their pet after getting “jumped,” so to speak. Jumping becomes part of this routine. It is rewarded and reinforced.

Another reason for jumping, which is less commonly the case, is that they may be trying to establish dominance. Dogs jump up on each other through what’s known as “teeing off.” In particular, they rest their head or paw (or both paws) on the shoulder of a dog they want to dominate and exert a bit of downward pressure. Because we walk on two legs, we’re more difficult to tee off on, but the motivation is the same. The dog may be trying to express his dominant status. In these cases, they often jump up once and more or less lean on you.

It’s important to identify this behavior by seeing it in the broader context of your relationship. First, realize a disobedient dog isn’t necessarily a dumb one. If they don’t listen to you, and push and pull you around some, they may have decided not to recognize you as their superior in the pack hierarchy (while still thinking the world of you as a companion!) Whether it’s male or female, a dog that consistently jumps on you may be exhibiting one of many behaviors of the signs of Alpha dog.

You should learn more about Alpha dog behavior, and if you suspect that the jumping is in fact an expression of dominance, then it is likely that your training will need to involve heavier corrections. This just means you might need to do more than simply ignore the dog while jumping and train them to Sit and Settle before getting your attention. For instance, water squirting, sharp “growling,” or even forcing the dog down and holding them down until they are still are all corrections that will short circuit this behavior.

Following Our Voice

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Perhaps you have already heard. The United States Internal Revenue Service is investigating All Saints Episcopal Church of Pasadena, California.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the IRS targeted All Saints because it is stepping up its probe of allegedly improper campaigning by churches. All Saints has historically been involved in social activism, so it was a surprise that an antiwar sermon delivered by its former rector should trigger such a response. Our tax code bars nonprofits from endorsing or campaigning against candidates in an election. This includes churches. Although no candidate was endorsed in the aforementioned sermon, the IRS is treating the matter as if All Saints had publicly supported a particular candidate.

Facing a potential loss of their nonprofit status has ramifications for All Saints, as well as the understanding of how we are to live our faith in churches across this country. All Saints must decide if they will comply by turning over all documentation related to the sermon in question. If they choose not to, the case could be turned over to the Department of Justice or the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. The Rev. Bob Edgar, general secretary of the National Council of Churches, USA, stated, I’m outraged. Preachers ought to have the liberty to speak truth to power. There is a lot more to be done about this, and it may include some actions of nonviolent civil disobedience. Since 9/11, the IRS, like the FBI, has been moving back to the 1950’s and 1960’s when a great deal of such activity was propagated against church leaders like Martin Luther King, said Rev. Edgar.

If you aren’t sitting up in your chair at this point, you should be because timing certainly is everything. The midterm elections are weeks away, and since President Bush did no achieve a landslide victory from his reelection campaign, threatening the voices calling people to think before they vote more of Bush’s policies in through senators and representatives who support him, must seem like an effective strategy. The IRS holds great power in our country, much more than it should. Not only would this investigation, also reportedly being waged against numerous other congregations, attempt to silence the prophetic voices from our nation’s pulpits, but it would seek to close houses of worship permanently. Keeping most churches running is a pray as you go venture. Taking away tax exempt status, or simply the threat of that being held over a congregation’s head, will make many, many preachers think twice before quoting Jesus or expounding on his message in ways that clearly inflamed a few other Pharisees. They will feel, and potentially will be, forced to choose: Will it be faith they will live or the fear of financial reprisal on both their personal and vocational lives? And, if their church is choosing faith, do they and their people have enough money to fight the legal battle against their own government for their very right to exist and worship?

These are the times, the moments, that call us to look at what we believe and how we will choose. We may not personally be opening a letter from the IRS. We may not be sitting in the pew of a parish about to realize the literal cost the government is putting on discipleship. But if we believe that God called us into being as a community as the body of Christ, then we are as much a part of the scenario being played out at All Saints Church as its rector and parishioners . They are a part of us and we are a part of them by virtue of Who lives among us and gives us life.

Jesus said, My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27). The people of All Saints Church have heard God’s voice over the years, and have shared what they have heard with great consistency. The sermon that attracted the IRS’ attention was delivered in the same church that heard sermons that opposed the Vietnam War and sermons that supported women clergy and gays and lesbians in the church. Its rector spoke out against the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. It is the congregation which will determine whether they will comply with the IRS or face what comes next. Having heard God’s voice all these years is a reminder that this is a two-way conversation initiated by God, who is known for sticking around when the going gets tough. God speaks, and if we have been listening, we know the voice we must follow.

Buying Keychains With A Credit Card

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Buying keychains online over the last few years has become a quicker and more secure process, thanks to the advent of secure payment processing and developing ecommerce applications. Now more than ever, buyers can feel safe in the knowledge that there can be less room for fraud and credit card theft, as there details become more and more secure and protected against third party interference. With growing and developing technologies providing for online payment handling, payment processors are making customers feel significantly more secure when transacting for keychains over the Internet, which is having a knock-on effect on keychain manufacture and supply.

When buying keychains online, it is important to remember that in essence you are opening up your credit card details to the world. This obviously raises preliminary issues of security and personal privacy, and it can also be quite difficult to know who to trust and who not to trust with your details online. It used to be the case that it was generally a hit or miss process, which turned many buyers away from transacting online. Now however, it is becoming a more and more regulated industry, with more and more security verifications necessary in order to handle credit card transactions, making buying with a credit card an easier and more attractive option for the retail buyer and collector alike.

Since the Internet has grown to become the colossal trading platform we all know today, the trade in valuable collectible keychains has increased exponentially. Traders from all over the world for the first time had the option of coming together to swap and sell their goods, a novelty that has provided much of the mainstay of keychain trade over the last decade. One of the problems that was presented with early online transactions was the issue of credit card fraud, and the potential for losing vast sums of money by dealing with unscrupulous traders. Now, many sites online that facilitate payment processing provide some degree of payment protection, agreeing to foot the bill in the first instance if you happen to get ripped off. An additional security measure with credit card is that many jurisdictions impose requirements for credit card companies to offer fraud prevention methods, and to refund any transactions through the chargeback mechanism. This provides buyers using a credit card with an absolute guarantee that if they happen to fall foul of a dodgy dealer, it is only the credit card company that will have to handle the problem and bear the resultant loss.

Buying keychains online was at one stage a dangerous prospect, both in terms of losing your credit card details and identity theft. Now, thanks to increasing industry regulation and legislative measures, those involved have had to up their game, and become more consumer friendly and security conscious. Now given the level of security features in place with most payment processors, and the heavy penalties waiting for those who fail to measure up, buying your keychain with a credit card might just be one of the safest ways to go.

Olive Oil, Your Health, Your Kitchen

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Extra virgin olive oil has become such a symbol of healthy eating that it is hard to believe that it was once accused of increasing the harmful cholesterol. It was a fat, so it had to be bad for us. Fortunately, we left those times behind and now olive oil and most fats are much better understood.

The main reason olive oil is healthy is because it is rich in healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. About 75% of that monounsaturated fat is oleic acid, which is very stable even at high temperatures. Moreover, our body processes oleic acid easier than other fatty acids.

Secondly, organic extra virgin olive oil also contains high levels of antioxidants like phenols, and vitamins E and A, which fight free radicals and thus prevent premature aging. Those antioxidants help neutralize the oxidation process, which is common to alls fats, and preserve the properties of olive oil too.

So, the fact that olive oil is capable of
resisting oxidation at higher temperatures much
better than seed oils makes it the safest
vegetable oil for frying.

Many in the non-Mediterranean industrialized
countries feel uneasy when a Mediterranean recipe
calls for frying in olive oil. Frying is an old
cooking technique that is very popular in the
Mediterranean cuisines. It is as much an integral
part of the healthy traditional Mediterranean
diet as consuming raw olive oil with bread and
salads.

Some olive oil tips for the kitchen

When heated up, olive oil expands in volume and
food absorbs it less than other cooking oils.
Therefore, you need a smaller quantity of olive
oil.

If it didn’t burn in your frying pan, you can
reuse olive oil up to three times. Some say even
five times, but I personally never use it more
than twice.

Olive oil transmits flavors between foods, so
never fry meat in olive oil you used to fry fish
and vice versa. My grandmother always kept a jar
for fish and one for meat next to the olive oil
bottle. It is the best way not to get flavors
mixed up.

Finally, olive oil looks thicker than other
vegetable oils, but this is only appearance as,
contrary to popular belief, it has no more
calories than sunflower oil, for instance.

Olive oil for your health

In the 13th century Arnau de Vilanova, doctor of
the Catalan royal family, already realized that a
moderate intake of olive oil enhanced the vital
functions of the body. In the 20th century, the
late American doctor, Ancel Keys MD, documented
that the olive oil based Mediterranean diet
reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

We see that contemporary research has confirmed
what the Mediterranean peoples knew and practiced
intuitively all along.

Heart disease is the Achilles’ heel of modern
societies living at a frantic pace. Since Dr.
Keys and his followers realized that we in the
Mediterranean have a better cardiovascular health,
the first medical studies on olive oil focused
mainly on that area.

They proved that olive oil balances the
cholesterol levels, can reduce the risk of a
heart attack, can play a role in the prevention
of arteriosclerosis, and fights high blood
pressure.

Later, research was extended to other areas like
digestion, cancer, and diabetes. The results have
been very positive and olive oil usually comes
through with flying colors.

One particular study concluded that with only two
tablespoons of virgin olive oil every day you can
begin to experience the health benefits that the
Mediterranean peoples have enjoyed for so long.
Incorporating it naturally into your eating
practices is simple.

Integrating olive oil

The easiest way is to get into the habit of
drizzling olive oil over slices of bread or
toasts, consuming it as a dressing for sandwiches
instead of butter, and adding it to salads with
some salt.

Wherever you go in the Mediterranean, Morocco,
Provence, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Catalonia,
Andalusia, or Majorca, you’ll find people eating
their own combination of bread and raw olive oil.

As a Catalan I eat pa amb tomaquet, literally
bread with tomato, almost every day: as part of
my breakfast, as a snack, or, I admit, when I am
too lazy to cook dinner. It is the Catalan
bruschetta, so to say, and you can prepare it in
no time with slices of bread or toasts, both are
fine.

Here is the most basic recipe for pa amb tomaquet.
Cut a very ripe tomato crosswise, rub the bread
with one half on both sides, drizzle olive oil
liberally over the bread and sprinkle some salt.

You can eat it plain or add any topping and
accompaniment you like: prosciutto-style or
cooked ham, cheese, tuna fish, an omelet,
anchovies, figs, olives. Even with a chocolate
bar at tea or coffee time, it may sound weird,
but it is delicious.

Other recipes with raw olive oil are authentic
allioli, salads with olive oil dressing, cold
sauces like romesco, and sopa de farigola or
thyme soup. As the Catalan saying goes: Sopa
sense oli no val un dimoni, literally, Soup
without oil isn’t worth a devil, meaning that a
soup with no oil is junk.

Here is the recipe. In a soup pot, bring 2-quart (
2 l) water to a boil together with 2 peeled
garlic cloves and 2 sprigs thyme. Simmer for 10
minutes and drain. Place 1 or 2 slices of country-
style bread on the bottom of each soup bowl,
drizzle them liberally with extra virgin olive
oil and ladle the soup over it. In the spring and
summer this soup is also great with mint instead
of thyme.

Recent studies have shown that the health
benefits of the Mediterranean diet are not
derived from olive oil alone, but from the
Mediterranean diet as a whole. So, eat well and
enjoy!

Getting a Job as a Teen

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

If, like most teens, you’re looking for a little extra cash for the movies or the mall - or for something larger like a car or college - you’ve probably thought about getting a job. Getting a job as a teen can be a great way to build up your resume and demonstrate your reliability and dependability to colleges and future employers. But before you embark on the glamorous lifestyle of hairnets and fast food, take the time to learn about the process of getting a job and decide whether or not it’s right for you.

Before you start looking for a job, you’ve got to find out if you can legally work as a teen. Every state has child labor laws which may limit the jobs you can do based on your age and the number of hours you can work during the school year or summer break. In most cases, you’ll be required to fill out a student work permit in order to work as a teen. Check with your schools or local government offices for more information.

You’ve also got to consider whether or not you can handle a job on top of your regular commitments. It’s hard to work as a teen. When you get a job, you’re expected to show up for your shifts, whether you’ve got a big exam the next day or a big date scheduled for the same night. You’ve got to go to work when you don’t feel like it, and you’ve got to keep up with your nightly homework on top of everything. Be realistic with yourself - if you’re already struggling to keep your grades up, a part-time job probably isn’t best for you.

If you’re legally able to work, it’s time to start looking for a job. If you’ve got friends who are already working, ask them which employers are good to work for and which ones aren’t. Search your local newspaper for part-time listings or walk into your favorite stores and ask if they’re hiring. It’s best to apply for lots of jobs, including ones you want and ones you’d just be okay with, since you won’t get every job you apply for. Always look your best and be polite with everyone you talk to when you’re applying for jobs.

If an employer is interested in you, you may be called for an interview. Interviews can be scary, but you can do a little preparation ahead of time to be ready. Most employers will want to know what you think are your strengths and weaknesses, what interests you in the position and what kind of schedule you’ll be able to keep. Never, ever lie to the interviewer, but be realistic with your answers. Remember, the goal of the interview is to find out if you’re a good match for the job.

If you’re offered a job, you’ll probably also talk about your schedule and the amount of money you’ll be paid. You’ll get an introduction to the business and be briefed on what your responsibilities will be. Pay close attention during your training and speak up if you have any questions. If there’s anything you feel uncomfortable with, let your manager know - you may be able to take on other tasks instead.

Check in with yourself regularly once you start working. If you feel overwhelmed, talk to your manager and see if you can reduce your hours or change the nights that you work. However, you’ve got to respect that your manager has his/her own needs in running the business and may not be able to accommodate you. If not, you may need to find another job. If your grades are slipping, it’s time to seriously consider whether you should be working or not. You can always make a little extra money with odd jobs like babysitting and yard work that you can do on your own time.

And speaking of the extra money, why not put some of it into a savings account? Sure, spend a little on a new pair of jeans, but by setting a little aside for more important things, you’ll be developing financial skills that will help you tremendously as an adult.
