Vegetarians at the BBQ

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

It would seem that nowadays there are a lot of options for vegetarians. Meatless alternatives seem to abound everywhere, from the neighborhood deli, to the sushi shop, to the hamburger joint. The hamburger joint? Yes, you heard correctly. With the introduction of several brands of meatless “burgers,” vegetarians can brave the very den of carnivorous pleasure. Once viewed as an eccentric oddity, vegetarians have moved from the fringe to the mainstream. However, the truth is, all too often the meatless menu option isn’t vegetarian at all…it’s just a menu item, minus the meat. Unfortunately, a white hoagie bun topped with iceberg lettuce, pickles, onions, mayonnaise, and mustard is about as unappealing to the vegetarian as it is to the carnivore counterpart.

So what about the vegetarian at the barbecue?

With its increased popularity, it’s highly likely you have friends or family members who’ve adopted this lifestyle. Don’t let this cause you angst the next time you invite them over for barbecue. With the tips below, you can be assured they’ll be licking their fingers and singing your praise as enthusiastically as your steak-loving comrades.

The first rule of thumb when barbecuing for vegetarians is that veggies are not just a sideshow anymore. Don’t doom your vegetarian guests to pick and choose among the sides to make their meals. Potato salad, relish plates, and devilled eggs? Consider. You offer steak, chicken, and fish to your meat-loving friends, but the vegetarian in attendance is offered only corn on the cob? Lame! If you want to really impress your vegetarian guests, you want to offer at least one meat-free main dish. While there are a few meat substitutions out there I advise you to think outside the box. A quick search on the internet will reveal literally hundreds of recipes for preparing veggies on the grill. A short-list of the easiest to prepare, and most popular vegetables would include potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and zucchini. If you’re willing to put in a little more effort, you can prepare a bowl of pasta to serve with the grilled veggies. Don’t blame me if your meat-loving friends fill up on this entrée and you have to make more!

The second tip to hosting a vegetarian-friendly barbecue is presentation. While a pile of juicy steaks thrown on a platter straight from the grill may look tempting, a pound of potatoes doesn’t quite have the same appeal. Take a few minutes to peruse a few vegetarian cookbooks, or preview the photographs of the recipes you check out on line. You may be surprised how tempting a plate of Stuffed Tomatoes looks with a sprig of fresh herbs and a sprinkling of balsamic vinegar, grated cheese, or drizzled oil. Let your creative juices flow freely, and watch how mouth-watering the vegetarian alternative suddenly becomes.

This article wouldn’t be complete without a word on quality. Time after time I’ve found this to be the big difference between a veggie-lover and a veggie-hater. Usually the veggie-hater has never been exposed to good quality vegetables. If you want your vegetarian entrée to come out tasting like a champ, it’s worth the effort to find the freshest produce available. Barbecue season also happens to be the best season for vegetables-so check out your local farmer’s market or neighborhood vegetable stand. Of course, the best place to get vegetables is straight out of the garden, and there are great recipes that even use the veggies you may otherwise throw away. (For example, the green tomatoes that get knocked off the vine grill up firm and tangy!) Trust me, everyone will love a vegetable that has been ripened by the sun, and picked in season.

There you have it! Take these tips with you to the grocery store and the vegetable stand, and I have no doubt your barbecue will be a big hit-for everyone!

American Obesity : Portions Gone Wild

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

I used to be one of those people who did not like to go to the higher end, gourmet or healthy restaurants. It wasn’t because I didn’t like the food, or that the atmosphere was not to my liking, it was because they served, in what had become my Americanized idea of meal size, skimpy portions .

However, the older I got, and the more educated I became on nutrition and healthy eating, I realized that these gourmet restaurants had it all right. Instead of focusing on quantity, they focused more on quality, and limited the portions on the plate to what was actually a healthy, moderate calorie count.

The American ideal of the bigger the better spilled over into our food consumption and portion rationing at meals not too long ago actually. After the great depression era, when Americans started to regain control over their finances, and foods and luxury items became more affordable, our portion sizes began to expand. Obesity still existed before this point, but since then it has spun out of control.

Obesity has also taken a turn for the worse because not only are the portion sizes getting bigger, but the foods we eat are higher in fat, sodium and sugars, a result of excessive processing and chemical additives, which build up in our system and cause obesity, diabetes, heart disease, mood disorders and countless other health issues which stem from excess weight.

In fact, chefs from some of the most popular American restaurants were recently surveyed, and reported that calorie count was the least of their concerns when they created signature dishes for the restaurants they worked for.

About one in six said that they even considered the calorie count aspect. They based their creations on flavor instead, casting aside portion size and fat content, etc., all of which add to the calorie count of a meal.

What can you do to avoid overeating if you frequent restaurants? Make sure you fill up on the salad, and get a low fat dressing, which can cut up to 100 calories from your meal many times. Unless you are going to a health food restaurant, or one that you know serves smaller, more controlled portions, you probably should not be finishing your meal. Take your time eating. Do not inhale your food.

Did you know that it takes your mind about 20 minutes to reigster that you are full? This is why many times you will feel just satisfied and pleasantly fulfilled when you finish a meal, and then about twenty minutes to a half hour later you feel ridiculously stuffed.

Ask for a box to take the rest home. This way, you will also not regret eating that big meal, and also will not be dealing with the effects of overeating, like sleepiness, mental fogginess, indigestion, gas pains, and cramping. It’s a win/win situation.

The increasing obesity epidemic has gotten so out of control that we now have gastric bypass surgery, which thousand of obese Americans elect to have each year, even though the surgery is extremely serious and many times life threatening. This is in direct response to a culture that grew up being under educated about portion control and wise food choices.

Many individuals in the baby boom era were not educated to the extent we are today about nutrition, how certain fats protect organs and well being, and others aid in their destruction, the effects of sugars on the body, and the effects of excess calorie consumption.

Most health professionals are hoping that the improved health and nutrition education available to the general public today will eventually whittle away at the obesity epidemic by making generation after generation more educated and armed with the knowledge they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

So, what will happen in the future regarding health awareness and education? It’s been in the news lately that the government is actually stepping in as a proactive measure against further obesity and health issues. Government officials recently tried to ban trans fats from being used in restaurant cooking.

The NFL also has stepped in to band against childhood obesity by educating youths in schools about exercise and proper diet, and are also campaigning for reform in the public school’s physical education classes, since it was found that gym class typically involves less than 20 minutes of actual physical activity.

With all of these changes going on, and a growing awareness in the American public about nutrition, portion control, calorie consumption and healthy food choices, one can only be optimistic about the future health of America.

Can we eliminate obesity all together? Of course not, but if we can put a big dent in it, this will be hug victory in our collective health, longevity and prosperity.

The Hidden Cost Of Store Cards

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

It happens all the time. You go into one of your favourite shops and hear the offer over the public address system: ‘An extra 10% off today if you apply for one of our store cards.’ This seems like a good idea for people who shop regularly in a particular place but there are a number of reasons to be careful about applying for store cards.

When Is A Store Card Not A Store Card?

First of all, the name ’store card’ is misleading. It makes them sound friendly. But store cards are another form of credit card. Like credit cards, people can use store cards to defer payment for purchases. Like credit cards, store cards charge interest on uncleared balances. And like credit cards, people have to apply for them.

Although it can be tempting to have a store card for each place you shop in, people should avoid this temptation. Every store card application will become part of your credit history. People who make more than three applications within a seven month period are likely to be turned down for some cards. This will adversely affect their credit rating.

Store Card Interest Rates

A key difference between store cards and credit cards is the interest-free period. While credit cards typically have interest-free periods of up to 56 days, many store cards have none. People pay interest on the debt from the day it goes on the card.

What is worse, the interest rates on most store cards are very high. The Competition Commission recently said that British consumers were being overcharged by £100 million a year due to the high interest rates. In fact, the Commission suggested that store cards should carry a ‘wealth warning’.

Interest rates on normal credit cards typically range between 8% and 20%. In contrast, store card interest rates are usually around 30%. This makes a tremendous difference when paying back a debt.

Other Store Card Fees

Store cards also charge high late payment fees, making them very expensive for consumers. And the payment protection insurance offered by many cards may be higher than that charged on regular credit cards.

Not all store cards fall into this category. There are some retail outlets that offer cards with similar rates to regular credit cards. Store cards that are badged by the retail outlet but issued by a bank may also have competitive interest rates.

Getting The Best From Store Cards

With high interest rates and low interest free periods, it is easy for consumers to pay over the odds for store card credit. To avoid this, it’s best to:

- Read the fine print to see what rate of interest applies to the card. This will be listed under the heading ‘typical APR’
- Check whether there is an interest free period
- Pay off the outstanding balance within a month

Another option is to avoid the store card and use another credit card with a better interest rate.

Joe Kenny writes for the Card Guide, a UK based credit cards site, visit today for introductory balance transfers and start clearing credit card debt today.

You’ve Got 9-Seconds to Hook’em!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

It’s true. The average American attention span has dwindled to that of a goldfish. These days, it seems people have very little time and even less patience. So, what does this mean for you, the self-employed professional trying to reach prospects in the most effective way possible?

Well, for starters, you’ve got to have a killer self-introduction — one that instantly conveys what you do, who you do it for, and the real benefits behind the product or service you provide.

Are you currently using the name, rank and serial number approach when a prospect asks you what you do? (Snooze!)

Here’s the deal: nobody really cares about your title. In fact, 50% of your prospects will have a negative association with whatever your title is (think dentists here!), so replace your current label with a short and compelling sentence that contains the desired result your prospect is looking for. For example, when asked what you do, instead of responding with I’m a dentist, you might try something along the lines of, I give people that bright, white mega-watt smile they’ve always dreamed of! Get the idea?

Ok. Now it’s your turn. Think about the single biggest result that your clients receive from using your product or service. Is it more money? Improved health? Better relationships? (Hint: The benefit will typically be linked to one of these three areas.) Once you know the benefit, go ahead and incorporate this information into a single sentence. Presto! Now you’re armed with a brand new response that will quickly answer that million dollar question– What do you do? –in a way that will have prospects begging for your business card!

A Token of Love and Thanks

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

A small favor for your guests to take home is not required but is a lovely gesture. What you choose to bestow is not as important as that it was given and presented with thoughtful care. Favors are a simple way to thank guests for sharing your special day with you and are sweet reminders of the celebration.

Many brides choose to give favors at a wedding luncheon or formal wedding dinner, where the guest list is a more intimate gathering of family and close friends. This allows you to put more time and money into meaningful keepsakes than if you tried to give a favor to every guest at a larger scale wedding reception. However, some brides opt to send home small favors with everyone who attends their reception.

Remember that with these tokens, what’s on the outside is just as important as what’s on the inside. Presentation is everything! Use ribbons, wrapping, boxes, bows, and bags to the best advantage. A wedding favor is another way to restate your wedding theme, so think of gifts that fit the style or mood of your wedding and wrap them in colors and ribbons that match the day.

The possibilities for wedding favors are endless. Wedding favors can be as elaborate or as simple as you choose. For the most formal occasion you might consider an engraved silver bell or personalized chocolate, while a bunch of cinnamon sticks tied with raffia would be perfect for a country affair.

Other ideas for wedding favors include the ever-romantic candle - a votive candle for each guest, or several long, thin tapered candles tied together with ribbon. A picture frame that matches your wedding theme would be perfect for the guests to take home to frame a picture from the wedding day. Edible favors are always a favorite!

Confetti to throw at the departing couple is a favorite tradition, and confetti of many kinds can be packaged as a wedding favor. Birdseed can be placed in small sachet bags and the contents tossed at the couple at the end of the evening. Sweet-smelling rose petals matching the colors of the wedding, boxed to perfection and tied with beautiful ribbon, make a lovely token of remembrance.

Other brides provide each guest with a bottle of blowing bubbles. A sky full of floating bubbles can make a fairytale-like escape for the couple as they leave the reception. For a summer night departure, or after-dark winter sendoff, have guests light sparklers and stand in a row, lighting the path to the couple’s car with magical firelight.

Favors can be distributed in different ways. You can set the small gifts at each place setting at a luncheon or dinner. In this case, they can double as place cards or dress up a table setting. Alternatively, you can carefully bundle or prettily pile together on a table at a convenient location for guests to take one on their way home.

The presentation of favors is one of the most memorable and gracious gestures at a wedding. Give unique and thoughtful gifts that create special memories of your special day.

Are These Five Killers Chasing Your Cat?

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

As a cat owner, your first responsibility is to keep your pet healthy. However, even with balanced nutrition and a good amount of love and attention, cats can still get sick. Learn about the most common ailments that affect cats so you can try to prevent them or cure them quickly with the proper medical care when you first spot the symptoms.

Fleas

Although cats and dogs can live with fleas, flea infestations should be controlled for several reasons. The most common flea, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) may carry the Dipylidium caninum tapeworm larvae. If cats eat fleas during grooming, they may become infested with these tapeworms.

Fleas could also transmit other infectious agents to both you and your pet. If kittens are exposed to fleas, they may become anemic. Cats can also develop an allergy to flea bites, resulting in excessive scratching or possibly skin disease. Finally, humans are also susceptive to itchy flea bites, usually on the ankles.

You may suspect your cat has fleas if he seems particularly itchy, or you see bites on human members of your household. To check if your cat has fleas, groom him over a sheet of white paper. Look for a few fleas caught in the comb’s teeth or flea dirt on the paper. Flea dirt is actually excrement of undigested cat blood, and appears black and comma shaped to the naked eye. If you place it on damp cotton wool, the flea dirt dissolves into bloody streaks.

To control fleas, all mature fleas must be killed and reinfestation prevented. Many commercial products are available both to kill adult fleas and remove fleas from the environment. Ask your vet for specific recommendations. Make sure what you use kills both the adult mature fleas, as well as the eggs left behind, usually on carpet and bedding. Nothing is worse than to think you have conquered the problem, than several months later to have your family and pets attacked by blood hungry new hatchlings.

Hairballs

When cats cannot digest hair and food debris, they regurgitate hairballs. Hairballs are formed either at the back of the throat or in the small intestines. Hairballs not only sound disgusting while your cat is producing them for you, but they also make an unsightly mess on your carpets and floors. Any cat owner who has had the thrill of watching their pet suffer through the process of hacking up fur balls will be highly motivated to prevent new ones from forming.

The simplest method of hairball prevention is grooming your cat to remove excess hair. The next step involves many products already on the market to prevent hairball build-up such as oils, treats, and diets. If your cat vomits frequently and the problem isn’t resolved with regular brushings, you should consult with the veterinarian to be certain that a more serious problem is not the cause.

Overactive thyroid

Overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, is a condition where the thyroid gland becomes enlarged and produces excess amounts of thyroid hormone. The condition is often provoked by a benign tumor on one or both lobes of the thyroid gland. The good news is that thyroid tumors have only a 2-5% chance of malignancy.

Symptoms of an overactive thyroid include: increased appetite or thirst, unexplained weight loss (particularly muscle mass), nervousness or irritability, frequent vomiting, lethargy and weakness, diarrhea, or a coat that looks ungroomed. A cat with the condition may not present every symptom, but the presence of two or more should prompt a visit to the veterinarian’s office.

At the vet’s, your cat will be given a physical exam. If she notices enlarged glands, a CBC (blood panel) and a thyroid-specific test can make the diagnosis more conclusive. There are three treatments that offer a good chance for your cat’s full recovery: anti-thyroid medication, surgery, and radioiodine treatment. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you should learn more about the disease and its treatments and discuss your options with the veterinarian before making a decision.

Diabetes

Feline Diabetes can affect cats of any age, but is most common in older, obese cats-typically males. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 is caused by insufficient insulin production while Type 2 results from a body’s inability to handle insulin effectively. Another type of diabetes, secondary diabetes, occurs as a side effect of drugs or diseases that impair the natural secretion of insulin or its effects in the body.

The symptoms of feline diabetes include vomiting, dehydration, weakness and loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, weight loss, breathing abnormalities, and an unkempt-looking coat. If your cat has any or several of these symptoms, take him to the vet. The vet will test for blood sugar levels and sugar levels in the urine. Doing both tests rules out an increased blood sugar level due to the stress of the office visit.

If your cat is diagnosed with diabetes, it is usually treated through one or a combination of five methods: diet and weight control, insulin injections, oral medications, monitoring glucose and insulin levels, and nutrient and botanical supplements. Each method of treatments has unique benefits and drawbacks, so be sure to decide on a treatment plan with your veterinarian.

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD)

This disease is a painful inflammation of the lower urinary tract that has the potential to be fatal. Feline lower urinary tract disease has a number of causes from decreased water intake and urine retention to viruses, bacteria, or diet. Symptoms that your cat may have FLUTD include inappropriate or difficult and frequent urination, appetite loss, listlessness, blood in the urine, or frequent licking of the genitals.

Vet treatment for FLUTD can include catheterization, fluid therapy, antibiotics, or even (rarely) surgery. At home, cat owners are often encouraged to change their pet’s diet and style of feeding (more frequent, smaller meals). It is also important for your cat to drink plenty of water.

We all want to keep our cats healthy and with us for as long as possible. Understanding and being on the lookout for these common ailments will allow the discerning cat owner to take action before a small health problem turns into something more serious. Using good observation skills to evaluate any potential change in your cat’s condition will allow you to take simple steps to keep your cat healthy, happy, and disease free. If you notice a continuing pattern of symptoms that may point to flea infestation, hairballs, an overactive thyroid, urinary tract disease, or even diabetes, timely consulation with your vet will allow you both to plan the best course of action. Your happy, healthy cat will thank you.

Zyprexa Lawsuit Loan! No-Risk Legal Finance!!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Plaintiffs involved in pharmaceuticals lawsuits like Zyprexa and Fen-phen etc, can now get Lawsuit cash advances. 99% of plaintiffs involved in lawsuits don’t realize they can get Legal finance while they are waiting for their settlement money.

Zyprexa (olanzapine) is a second generation or atypical antipsychotic medication produced by Eli Lilly and company. Zyprexa was FDA approved for the short-term treatment of acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder.

In 2003 the FDA required that the class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotic, including Zyprexa, include warnings about increased risk to patients of development of diabetes and hyperglycemia. In 2004, a federal prosecutor announced an investigation of Eli Lilly, in relation to the techniques it has used to market Zyprexa.

To date, over 16 million people have used this drug. The FDA has identified there have been 384 reports of diabetes Zyprexa side effects, including 23 deaths. There have been many questions regarding the popular drug Zyprexa and its safety. The potentially fatal Zyprexa side effects have resulted in Zyprexa lawsuits.

A risk free source of financing is now available for plaintiffs involved in Zyprexa or other pharmaceutical lawsuits. It is called lawsuit funding or often referred as Lawsuit Loans, Pre-settlement financing, Legal finance, or a Personal injury settlement, but these are not loans because the money does not have to be paid back unless the case is won or settled. These are non- recourse Cash Advances. It carries no risk because plaintiffs pay only when they get their settlement money.

It doesn’t seem fair. Even if you win your Zyprexa litigation, the money you get may come too late. You need money now! Legal finance or so called Lawsuit loan can help you buy some time with a cash advance on your pharmaceutical drug litigation settlement.

Pharmaceutical drug litigation can take years to settle, which can be a problem if you’re sick or are unable to work. You can have a solid pharmaceutical drug litigation claim and a strong legal team, but the drug companies have deep pockets. Without a cash advance to pay your bills and other expenses, you may have to take a low settlement offer for your pharmaceutical drug litigation.

The process to receive Zyprexa Lawsuit funding or Legal finance is risk free & simple. Plaintiff may have a bad or no credit. There are no monthly payments. The total process is confidential, prompt and discreet:

1. The first step is to complete an Application Form.

Making an application is free and there is no obligation. Approval is fast.

2. Plaintiff authorizes attorney to release case information to underwriters

3. Quick and thorough underwriting process to qualify client.

4. If approved plaintiff completes funding agreement

5. Bank check delivered to Plaintiff

6. Plaintiff pays back upon successful settlement/verdict of case

They can use the cash advance in any way they like. They can use the money for living expenses; pay their bills, mortgage/ rent / car payments, medical treatment, education expenses. As a matter of fact use it any way they like.

Email Marketing - A Powerful Tool

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Marketing work as a home business for your client’s firm may merge the firm’s Internet as well as brick and mortar location. One of the best ways of merging the two is with opt-in e-mail.Business consultants who’s home business and marketing depend on the internet have an advantage of driving traffic to their stores, while people who have a diffrent marketing location fail to take advantage. Combining the two with email not only leads to more sales more quickly but saves the client’s financial and time resources as well as your home business time and costs.

Marketing consultants who learn to conduct an opt-in email marketing campaign effectively find themselves with more work from home Internet business from entrepreneurs than they could have otherwise. Nothing, as the saying goes, succeeds like success.

The primary marketing work of creating top of mind awareness for your client and their traffic to their site’s home page or their store is accomplished well with e-mail. If you’re marketing work for that client involves buying a billboard that billboard should include the Web address. Logging on would then include registration including email address and request for opt-in (newsletters, news, tips, discounts, free stuff, and so forth.) The online marketing campaign would include the same incentive for opt-in but would also encourage a trip to the brick and mortar location as well.

You’ve got to work at marketing both and marrying both so they work together to hone a profitable home business for yourself and a successful Internet and brick and mortar success for your client.

Ideas on how to do must include listing the hours and location of each of the physical stores of your client.

You could, for example, create an online program of preferred customers who get discount coupons online to be redeemed at one of the local stores. Blockbuster has done a good job of this. Membership at Blockbuster.com, at $14.95 includes unlimited videos order on the Web and delivered by mail. It also includes one coupon each week for a free movie at the brick and mortar Blockbuster location of your choice.

Each of your home business client’s storefront locations should help with the online marketing work by bringing the customers back to the Internet. They could do this by asking for email addresses when consumers make a purchase at the store, and by printing the URL on shopping bags, receipts and business cards. It should be prominently displayed on delivery and service trucks as well.

E-mail marketing does the work of bringing your home business client’s long distance customers close. It also stimulates people to buy just because they are reminded that your client’s business exists. While they may not act right away, the more they get that email from that firm the more likely they’re going to buy something when their pertinent need or desire arises.

A major part of the work of your home business marketing consultancy is statistical - keeping a record of which email has been most effective and what work well. All these should be well documented

Wedding Day Makeup Tips And Advice

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Your wedding day is going to be one of the most memorable days of your life. You want to look and feel the beautiful, radiant bride with your makeup enhancing your natural beauty. Your every blush, smile and kiss will be recorded on film so your bridal makeup needs to be picture perfect and look flawless all through your big day. This guide to wedding makeup will take the stress out planning your wedding makeup.

Wedding makeup advice: Prepare your skin for your wedding day

Unfortunately many women wait until they are only a few months away from their wedding day before they even begin to give any thought to skin care. Start early and take care of your skin now. You will need to work out your skin type to help you establish a proper skin care regime. This, combined with good eating habits, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep and regular exercise will ensure that your skin will be radiant on your big day.

For help understanding your skin type and how to develop a quick and easy skin care routine please read Donna’s article; Great looking skin - A simple 4 step skin care guide.

Wedding makeup tip: Beware facials !

Unless you have facials on a regular basis DO NOT get one the week before your wedding day. Facials can pull impurities to the surface, and you do not want to break out the week of your wedding. To also help avoid blotches and blemishes do not make any major changes in your skin care routine during the few weeks before your wedding. The weeks before your wedding is not the time to experiment with your skin care. If you regularly get facials have your last regular facial a good week before the wedding.

Wedding makeup tip: Pimples and acne.

If you do have a breakout, do not pick. Do not do anything that can irritate or redden or enlarge the problem. Use pure Aloe Vera to treat any bumps or breakouts. It is a wonderful healer.

Wedding makeup tip: Keep away from too much sun.

Don’t get too much sun before your wedding. Sunburns, peeling skin and tan lines can sabotage your special day.

Wedding makeup advice: Use a professional makeup artist or do it yourself ?

If you are confident in applying your own makeup there is no reason you can’t do your own wedding makeup. If you are not so confident with your makeup abilities your wedding makeup is not the time to experiment - you want to look your absolute best on the day and your wedding photos will be your lifetime mementos of your special day. If you are unsure of your makeup abilities, or just want the peace of mind of not having to worry about your makeup, use a professional.

Either way read on - I’m sure you will find the following tips and advice useful.

Wedding makeup advice: Things to consider when planning your wedding makeup.

You will want your makeup to be appropriate for the time of day, the venue (indoors or outdoors) and complement the style of your wedding dress so once you have confirmed the arrangements for your wedding day, and you have decided the style of your wedding dress, you can start to think about the style of makeup you prefer. Things to consider include;

Night time or day time wedding ?

Night time weddings are typically more formal than day time weddings. For a night time wedding consider a more sophisticated makeup look. For a day time wedding makeup tends to be more natural.

Indoors or outdoors wedding ?

Outside lighting is stronger so your makeup should to be softer and more natural than makeup for an indoor wedding.

The lighting.

Different lighting requires different makeup styles. Night time lighting tends to dull makeup so a stronger makeup look is preferable. Natural and day time lighting is more generous to makeup so, again, consider a more natural makeup look.

The colour of your dress.

Ivory and off white tend to make the skin look softer and can therefore support a more glamorous makeup style. White tends to look strong and washes out most faces so consider using softer colours to enhance the face.

The style of your dress.

The stronger the neckline of your dress the more sophisticated the hair and makeup style will need to be match the dress’s style. A neckline that cuts deep and is off the shoulders will look great with a hair up hair style so that the line of the neck and shoulders is shown off. Consider also the length of the dress, the shorter the dress the more simple the hair and makeup should be. Remember you are creating an entire picture, do not wear a beautiful dress and stylish heels and then wear your hair and makeup like you do when you wear your jeans. Don’t sell yourself short on such a memorable day.

Wedding makeup tip: Give yourself plenty of time to organise your makeup.

Before you meet with a makeup artist, or purchase any makeup, take some time to go through bridal magazines and pull out makeup styles that you really like and some you don’t like. Armed with your bridal magazine cut outs and a picture of your wedding dress book an appointment with your makeup artist for a trial run or a consultation at your cosmetics counter. Don’t do this at the last minute. Make sure you have a good couple of weeks up your sleeve so you have time for a couple of sessions if you don’t settle on a preferred style and colours first time up. Once you have your makeup look sorted make sure the makeup artist or beauty consultant writes everything out, and notes any makeup items you may not have that you need to purchase. If you are doing your own makeup have a couple of dry runs well before your big day so you have the makeup style and look perfected well ahead of time.

Wedding makeup tip: Be yourself

You want to look sensational but remember you want to look like yourself and feel comfortable with your appearance. You can look great and stay within your comfort zone. You want your husband to be to recognise you when you walk down the aisle.

Plan ahead and give yourself time to find the makeup look that you love and feels comfortable.

Wedding makeup advice: Purchasing or selecting your makeup.

Now you have settled on your makeup style here are some tips and advice on your specific makeup requirements:

Foundation: Sort out your foundation well ahead of time.

The key to successful wedding makeup is perfect looking skin. Make sure that your foundation matches your skin tone exactly and doesn’t look mask like. Give yourself plenty of time to experiment and find the perfect foundation for you.

For help selecting your foundation please Donna’s article; Choosing and applying foundation - A simple step by step guide.

Wedding makeup tip: Highlight one facial feature

You know your best facial feature; your plump rosy lips, your beautiful eyes or your lovely check bones. Your makeup should highlight your chosen feature. Don’t try and highlight more than one feature, it will look “too much”. If you use a bold red lipstick to highlight your beautiful lips go low key with your eye makeup. Conversely if you choose a stunning smoky eye look choose a more subtle lipstick or lip gloss.

Wedding makeup tip: Watch out for “seemed a good idea at the time”.

Watch out for fads; in 20 years time hot pink lipstick will date your wedding photos. You want to look as classic as possible so that your photo memories are timeless.

Blush: Become a truly blushing bride by choosing a warm flattering cheek colour in a pinky peach or rose or, if you tend to get flushed, a brownish tone. Experiment and find the blush colour that suits your skin tone. Use a powder based blush, they will usually last longer than cream blushers. To apply blush, start at the hairline by the middle of your ear, blend forward to the front of the cheek, and then back to the hairline and upwards. For a perfect application find a blush brush that is the size of the apple of your cheek. After the initial application dust the blush with some loose powder and then apply a touch more blush to the front of the cheek.

Lipstick or Lip Gloss: You will be doing a lot of kissing on your wedding day so you will need a lip colour that will last. Use a matte or longwearing lipstick or lip gloss because you don’t want to be constantly touching up your makeup during the day.

Be sure to use a colour that complements your hair and eye colour and use a lip liner in the same colour family as your lipstick or lip gloss. Don’t use a lip liner much darker than your lipstick or lip gloss. This technique looks harsh and very unnatural in pictures.

Purchase the lipstick or lip gloss and lip liner to keep in your purse for the whole day.

Wedding makeup tip: Smallish lips

If your lips are naturally small the lighter the lip colour the fuller the lips will seem.

Wedding makeup tip: Makeup remover.

Be sure to have makeup remover ready for any accidents. As you know makeup doesn’t just wipe off, especially not off a beautiful white wedding gown. Makeup wipes are a convenient way to keep makeup remover handy.

Eye shadow: For help selecting and applying your eye shadow please read Donna’s article; Beautiful eyes made easy.

If you are considering smokey eyes please Donna’s article; A step by step guide to sexy smokey eye makeup.

Wedding makeup tip: Eyebrows.

Properly groomed and shaped eyebrows help enhance and add expression to the face. Have your eyebrows groomed but do this a week before the wedding in case you get a few red bumps after plucking or waxing. Fill in your eyebrows, if needed, with an eyebrow pencil shade that’s slightly lighter than your eyebrows. Brush through with an eyebrow brush or a clean toothbrush for a more natural look.

Mascara: For extra lush looking eyelashes use an eyelash curler before applying your mascara. Prepare for those tears of happiness by using a good waterproof mascara. Apply two coats, let the first coat dry before applying the second coat.

When you purchase your waterproof mascara make sure that you have an eye makeup remover that also takes off waterproof mascara.

Finishing Touches: When you have finished applying your makeup you may want to apply a little more blush, and then finish with a final brush of loose powder.

Have a beautiful day !!

The Five Things You Need To Know Before You Buy A Handbag

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

The handbag can make the difference between fab and drab. The right one brightens up an otherwise boring outfit while the wrong one makes even the hottest ensemble look rather plain. The handbag has such a great impact on your overall look, so I’ve put together the following style tips as a reminder before buying your next handbag:

Tip # 1

BODY TYPE: Does it look good on me?

A handbag whose shape is the opposite of your body type suits you best. If you’re petite and curvy, get one that’s long and slim. The contrast between your body type and the handbag’s shape provides a balance in your look. If you get one that’s the same shape as your body, you’ll just put more emphasis on your problem areas. Your big parts will look bigger while your small parts will seem even smaller. That’s definitely the last thing you need. If you’re not sure if a handbag looks good on you, make use of all the mirrors found in the store. If you are ordering online, check for a money back guarantee. Only reputable online stores have one.

Tip # 2

COMFORT: Is it easy to use?

Real style is effortless…or at least, appears to be. You need to look relaxed while looking glamorous to be a true fashionista. If you’re handbag brings you discomfort, it will show, and you’ll just look like you’re trying too hard to be stylish. That’s a fashion faux pas! The next time you go shopping, pay attention not only on the design but on the materials used. Online shops are great in this aspect because they provide a lot of pictures of their products from various angles. They also list the important details on a handbag like its dimensions and materials. Such practice is not commonly done in regular stores.

Tip # 3

TREND: How long will it be in style?

Some styles of handbags come and go, while others stick around and become classics. It’s great to be able to keep up with trends but your handbag collection should have more of the timeless designs than of fleeting fads. If classics bore you too much, you can prettify them with scarves or chains. Classics are usually more versatile because they can go from serious to sassy with just a few accents.

Tip #4

SPACE: Will my things fit in it?

If a handbag is fit to burst when you put your knick-knacks in it, move on to the next bigger sizes. A handbag may have a gorgeous design but if its shape gets deformed because of its contents, its appeal will surely lose a lot of points. Just think of a duffel-style handbag that ends up looking like a sausage because it’s crammed full. It’s not going to look pretty. On the contrary, if you don’t have too much stuff to carry, choose a small handbag. Some large ones look limp when they don’t have enough filling to support their shapes.

Tip # 5

BUDGET: Can I afford it?

Not everyone can afford authentic Louis Vuitton, but everyone can have a stylish handbag without blowing the budget. Just have a bit of patience to look in vintage stores, factory outlets, and department stores. If you want to stand out with a unique yet affordable handbag, check out an online shop like Siam Sensibilities. They sell beautiful handmade handbags made from Thailand’s indigenous materials at budget-friendly prices. You can’t easily find them in stores so you won’t have to worry about going to a party and seeing five other women toting the same handbag as yours. Of course, nothing beats the excellent quality that a hefty price tag can bring. If it’s something you’ll be using regularly, it’s okay to splurge on a high-end designer handbag. Just make sure that you’re really getting what you’re paying for. Check to see if you still have enough money to pay this month’s rent, too.

Keep these five tips in mind the next time you’re out shopping for a handbag. You may need to do a bit of work but you’ll end up a happier buyer for it. After all, there’s nothing to be sad about taking home the perfect handbag!
