Feet

Feet should be large enough to support the horse and his weight, and the hoof wall should be hard but not brittle. The front feet and the back feet should appear to be symmetrical from all angles. The sole should be slightly concave, and heels should be even where they join the sole.

Legs

Legs should be straight. Legs that are out of alignment can result in soundness problems, as the forces that travel up the leg of the horse as he moves will affect other parts of the body, depending upon where legs deviate. Legs should also be symmetrical, with no bumps or bulges. Each pair of legs should also match each other.

Joints

Good joints are imperative to any horse who performs. Joints should have the correct axis, and they should be symmetrical, free of lumps, cool to the touch, and should be in proportion to the size of the horse. If one joint seems too large it should be examined for injury. If all joints seem too large the horse should be examined by a veterinarian for nutritional or metabolic problems. From the front view, a line dropped from the point of the shoulder to the ground should bisect the knee, fetlock, and hoof. From the side view, the line from the front of the fetlock, along the top of the pastern, and continuing along the front of the foot to the ground should be straight.

Shoulder

Good shoulder conformation will depend upon what the horse is being used for, as shoulder slope and how long the shoulder is varies with breed type and use. As a general rule of thumb, horses used for speed should have a long, sloping shoulder, while those used for power have more upright shoulders.

Withers

Since withers are what keeps a well in place, any ridden horse needs to have appropriate withers. Horses with flat withers, often called mutton withers, often have difficulty being ridden up and down hills, but can sometimes fare well on the flat. Poorly conformed withers can cause pain in the ridden horse and can lead to unsoundness.

Hip

The angle and length of the hip should match the angle and hip of the shoulder. While short hip lengths rarely cause unsoundness they can negatively impact speed and power.

Back and Neck

The long back versus short back debate continues depending upon the use of the horse. While long-backed horses do tire more easily, they can be more comfortable to ride. Long-backed horses can also excel at jumping because of the scope the long back allows them. Long backs also allow more movement in the horse’s legs, which is why many long-backed horses excel at driving.

The length, shape, and way a horse’s neck connects to the chest and the back will vary depending upon the breed and use of the horse. Horses who run need longer necks, while horses who show in park or pleasure classes often benefit from aesthetically pleasing upright necks.

Eyes

Horses need big, well-placed eyes. Horses with small eyes may suffer from impaired vision or have a medical problem. Eyes should not be set too far toward the sides of the head, otherwise peculiar fields of vision are sure to be an issue.

Nostrils

The nostrils should be open and symmetrical, to allow for maximum air intake. Horses with extremely dished heads or thick necks sometimes have difficulty taking in the right amount of air despite nostril size, so make sure you take these things into consideration.

How on earth could I possible solve such an equation, it’s impossible, period!

Now let me tell you a little story about a certain pike, for those of you who don’t know, a pike is a delicious (in my opinion) fresh water fish. A few years ago, a group of scientists performed a couple of interesting experiments, mainly by using this fish. They placed the fish inside an aquarium and fed it by pouring in some smaller fish. They then placed a barrier of glass in between the pike and the smaller fish, resulting in the pike constantly trying to reach it’s food but ending up being prevented by this invisible wall.

Finally the pike stopped pursuing the fish, thinking that it was no good to even try. The scientists then removed the barrier and were they were quite amazed at what they saw; the small fish actually circulated around the pike without any counter reaction being executed, how come one might ask? As it turns out, the fish had been subjugated to acquire helplessness, a term that may be used in order to describe how an object is handicapped by it’s mere thoughts, thus forgetting about it’s capabilities by throwing in the towel for good.

So How Does CPH Work?

If you took time to reflect on all the things that you do during an average day, you are likely to come up with a least of typical activities in a typical order, such as getting up from bed, having a shower, eating breakfast, travelling to work and so on. If now, you focused on just one of these activities, say getting up out of bed and thought about all the components of doing that are involved in this one habitual act, you would find that it could be broken down into much smaller components. For example, hearing your alarm clock, recognising that this sound means its time to get up or perhaps you usually press the snooze button for more sleep. The next step may involve rolling over in bed, sitting on the edge of the bed and then standing and so on. Again these components can be broken down further, for example, rolling over in bed involves a complex range of movement and continuous sensory and motor feedback between the central nervous system and body.

Once you divide activities into component parts it becomes clear that every day we do a whole range of things and for each and everyone we have a strategy for how to do it. A strategy is a sequence of modalities and sub modalities and is often likened to a recipe for baking a cake. In order to model a strategy you would need the ingredients (modalities), the amounts and quality of each ingredient (sub-modalities) and the sequence of steps to take.

In NLP, understanding about strategies are important because although many of our strategies that we develop during growing up achieve the desired goal, some are no longer as effective as they could be. NLP can teach people how to modify old strategies or even install new strategies to in order to achieve desired results. This means it is even possible to elicit strategies from others, say someone who is particularly good at a specific activity such as golf and install this strategy in someone wishing to be just as good at golf. What did you feel when you read that statement?

‘Yeah I thought it was something like that’ is the most common thought or reply I come across. I state categorically that all the above may be, and usually is, wrong depending on your circumstances.

Surprised?

Let me tell you some more about UK bankruptcy. The British government went to find out why small enterprise was booming over the pond but not so much in the UK. When the report came back looking in depth on many areas the British government concluded, amongst other factors, that the USA is so enterprising because they had made it easier for individuals to go bankrupt and start again having learnt from their mistakes.

This was the precursor to the changes in the Enterprise Act which impacted the way personal bankruptcy is handled amongst many other areas of finance in the UK today.

At the time of writing, bankruptcy in the UK usually lasts for no more than 12 months. In fact many people are discharged in less than 12 months depending on the circumstances around their bankruptcy. That’s one year or less in most cases! Previously the usually time for an individual to be in bankruptcy was 3 years.

All that said, bankruptcy is a very serious step to take. It is a very public affair and the event can follow you for many years. Even after the bankruptcy has gone from your credit history financial institutions in particular often ask if you have ever declared yourself bankrupt. Your membership in some societies and associations may also be lost.

What can’t you do during bankruptcy

Well you didn’t think it was all a breeze did you? There are a number of things you need to be aware of:

1) You can’t ask for more than £500 of credit without first informing the lender that you are bankrupt. That’s usually the point at which they start sprinting away from you in their rush to not get their fingers burnt. Remember a lender doesn’t just mean a bank, it can mean friends and family. Even if you agree to buy a car off a friend and they say here take it now and pay me the money next week then you are in a credit agreement probably worth more then £500 and so you have to legally tell them about your bankruptcy.

2) You cannot be a director of a limited company whilst your are bankrupt. If you area one-man band or a sole trader, this doesn’t mean you cannot trade as a sole trader. Yes, you get to keep your business assuming you haven’t traded fraudulently but you do lose your limited company status in this instance.

3) You will lose certain positions of authority. Think councillor or accountant or high-ranking police officer. There are many more roles that are affected. Do check with a professional that your job is not affected if you do decide to go bankrupt. Some companies actually have a ‘no bankrupts’ policy in their employment contracts. It’s time to read your contract again.

Other stuff to consider

There is an impact on your credit file for 6 years. This means there is a record of your bankruptcy on your credit file that can be seen by lenders and anyone with access to your history.

Your name will appear in the local newspapers under the bankruptcy notices section and the London Gazette.

On the day of your bankruptcy all your bank accounts are frozen by the Official Receiver (the person appointed by the courts to administer your bankruptcy). If you owe that bank money on the day of your bankruptcy then it is unlikely they will reopen your account. Any accounts in credit will see that money going to the Official Receiver to go towards repaying costs and debts associated with the bankrutpcy.

The really nasty bit that your friend down the pub forgets to tell you

One of the Official Receiver’s roles in administering your bankruptcy is to look at your assets and disposable income and determine your ability to repay your debts. If you have disposable income available then you may end up paying a proportion of that to the Official Receiver over the course of 3 years under an income payment order or income payment agreement. This is a commonly overlooked fact by many a ‘lay person’ giving debt advice down the pub to a friend. It’s can also be a costly bit of overlooked advice.

What about your house and car?

Well this needs to be understood and talked through with a professional but the general rule of thumb is this:

If you own a house then the Official Receiver will take an interest in that property even if it is in negative equity. You may even lose your house in some circumstances even if you have a wife and child at home. The Official Receiver will also be looking to realise funds from the car, caravan or any other valuable asset (anything of value really, start thinking about pensions funds with a cash in value, windfalls, endowment policies, valuable artwork, intellectual property rights, websites….etc.). And this is not just in the run up to bankruptcy. If you have a windfall during your bankruptcy period then that is liable to be made available to the Official Receiver administering your case and paid towards their fees and the losses of your creditors.

What about HP agreements?

HP agreements usually have a clause that if you become bankrupt then the asset (usually a car) must be returned to your HP company. As the car legally belongs to the HP company it cannot be sold off by the Official Receiver. If you are meeting your regular payments to the HP company and the Official Receiver deems that the payments are reasonable for your needs then a conversation with the HP company would be prudent at the earliest opportunity.

If you are going bankrupt for a second time.

The other changes to the Enterprise Act means that people going bankrupt for a second time will likely be made bankrupt for at least 5 years and possibly up to 15 years before being discharged.

Be aware and get proper advice.

Do get good advice from somebody that will guide you through the whole process and not just send you off in the direction of the local courts. Do sit down and get an experienced professional to go through everything in detail. Be aware of all the factors that will affect you if you decide to go bankrupt. In essence, you create an entirely new passage using an existing passage as your guide.

For example if you wanted to try to write in the same manner as the Psalmist you might copy a passage of Scripture…

This would be an emulation example…

While this may not be a perfect example, the idea remains intact; stay as close to the form and function of the passage you are emulating as possible so anyone familiar with the work will quickly recognize the similarities.

This is an exercise that is easy in concept, but somewhat difficult in execution. In a perfect emulation you would replace every word with another word. In a perfect emulation a noun is replaced with a noun and an adjective with an adjective and so on.

Emulation teaches you to creatively rewrite and reexamine the mechanics of what was written. In my emulation sample, I used a thought for thought emulation style, not word for word. Emulation doesn’t need to be about the same topic either; it simply needs to match up with the literary style of the original author.

The basic appeal of an option ARM mortgage is that you don’t have to make large payments in the beginning. These are the loans you may have seen on website banners advertising $200,000 loans for only $500 a month. This does sound good when money is tight and you want to conserve the bills you have. But in actuality, you will still be borrowing a certain amount of money that needs to be paid off. And while the bills are low in the beginning, they will begin to increase over the duration of your loan period.

Another thing to consider with option ARM mortgages is that the interest rates can soar or they can plummet, depending on the market and the terms of your loan. Though you might be only paying $500 a month, your loan amount may be increasing without you even realizing it. And once you’re out of that initial low payment period, you may need to double or even triple the amount you are paying every month.

You can choose between several different payment plans each month with an option ARM mortgage. You might pay typical payments that include both interest and the principle, or just payments that are interest. You might also choose to limit your payments so that you’re paying the least amount possible - however, this is not going to help with the overall amount as interest will continue to be added to your loan amount.

In the beginning months, you will also generally be offered a low interest rate, which will be appealing and cause your payments to be lower. But while this introductory interest period seems appealing, it is not going to last. Be sure to ask how long this low rate is going to last, if you hear that it’s only a month or two, it might not be worth it to you. After the introductory period, the interest will rise to the normal rates.

When you pay monthly and only pay the minimum payment, you will not necessarily be paying down your overall loan because the interest rate will continue to add money to the balance. After a while, your payments may not be covering any interest that you have accrued or even helping with the principle, adding up to a large sum that you now have to pay down.

Another thing to consider is that after five years or so, the loan can be recalculated, which can lead to substantial increases in your monthly payment. This can be shocking to the borrower, but it will be clearly outlined in the option ARM payment fine print.

So, the question becomes - are the option ARM mortgages good for anyone? If you don’t have a lot of money now, but you can be certain that you will in the future, this might be a good option for you. But if you’re not going to keep up with your current low payments and aren’t adding any additional money that you could to the payment plan, you might be setting yourself up for a financial disaster.

But the main concern is that those that do not do their homework on the loan will end up being ’surprised’ when it comes time to pay off their larger bill. Do yourself a favor and make sure that you are reading the fine print and that you understand what is expected of you.
