How Not To Tour Scotland

You are 12th in line behind the caravan at the front. A slow right hand bend comes up and you drift out to see if cars are coming, but you notice the car in front has edged up to make it difficult for you to overtake.
Look at that castle over there, Dad,
In a minute, son,
Then your concentration slips and disaster strikes. You took your eye off the car behind and now he has whipped in front of you. The speedo tells you you are doing no more than 45mph. They shouldn’t allow caravans really, on these roads. You do this from Edinburgh to Inverness and back down to Glasgow.

Back at the office, How did you like Scotland, would you go there again? It was very nice, but we might do something different next year. Yes, well, next year you could always spend a week driving around the M25. Great fun.

To-day Gillian and I toured Scotland the correct way. We started out as usual with little idea of where we were heading.
South?
Ok.
Stalker Castle for soup and a roll?
Why not?

A ride along the edge of Loch Linnhe, with the mountains of Morven across the water. No traffic. Yesterday’s cold front had passed over leaving a cool, clear and sunny day. The air was fresh and you could see for miles down the Sound towards Mull.

How about taking our little North Shian road the wrong way round?
Ok

Single track road, with hardly any passing places. If you meet a car coming the other way the chances are that one of you will have to reverse, but you’ll exchange a wave. Didn’t matter, didn’t pass any other cars. No one goes there. Except us, of course.

Sun came through the trees from South Shian across the water. Low tide made it look soft and wonderful against the light. Wonder where the old slipway is, we found it before remember?

This is where the people, and cattle, used to cross in a big rowing boat ferry 200 years ago when they travelled the down the coast from North to South. Cuts off a days walk round the coast, and many famous people in history have used it. It is about a mile across and the Spring tide flows strongly. Took a bit of rowing in the old days with a crowd aboard. They used heavy, caulked, wooden boats then. No glass fibre.

So we stopped to ask Charlie Moore who was planting some larch trees in his garden. The answer lasted for an hour as we swapped stories of the roe deer in his garden, the old ferry, the new pier restaurant owners in the village, and the evening when he froze in his garden as an otter walked by his feet. The answer included his early days in the Orkney Isles. He might have to go back there because the authorities have stopped his licence because of his diabetes. His neighbours get some groceries for him, but he walks three miles to the nearest bus. Lovely man, didn’t sound Scottish at all, but that’s the Orcadians for you.

Back to the cottage half an hour later taking in little Port Appin and its small passenger ferry to Lismore on the way. Total distance travelled? About 25 miles.

That’s the way you tour Scotland properly. You don’t go past it in a car. You go into it with the people.

Whiplash Compensation Claims

Most whiplash injuries occur when you are in your car and another car smacks into the backend of your car. The impact of the collision pushes your car forward and your whole body is thrown forward and then backwards. People who experience whiplash may develop one or more of the following symptoms, usually within the first two days after the accident, neck pain and stiffness, headaches, pain in the shoulder or between the shoulder blades, low back pain, pain or numbness in the arm and/or hand dizziness ringing in the ears or blurred vision, difficulty concentrating or remembering, irritability, sleep disturbances, fatigue.

The extent and type of injuries varies from person to person. Most injuries are to soft tissues such as the disks, muscles and ligaments, and cannot be seen on standard X-rays. Your doctor may need to request specialized tests. Most people recover quickly although a small number develop chronic conditions that result in severe pain and sometimes disability.

To treat whiplash the best way is to encourage movement from early on, rather than immobilization. You can have a soft collar that can be used in the short term. It is recommended to add ice in the first 24 hours, followed by gentle active movement. Your doctor may provide you with a series of exercises that you can do at home. An early return to work is encouraged, even if your doctor must prescribe some temporary modifications in your work situation.

For pain relief you can get medication from your doctor, but exercises, physical therapy, traction, massage, heat, ice, injections and ultrasound are all proven to be beneficial. Most symptoms should resolve themselves within several months for most people who have whiplash but chronic conditions should be investigated further and might require surgery.

Claiming compensation for whiplash is your civil right. If someone collides with your car and you suffer whiplash as a result then you are entitled to receive compensation. Most personal injury solicitor will have dealt with a whiplash claim so would be able to advice you. You may have taken some time off work or in severe cases have to deal with an immobilising disability. And if the accident was not your fault then you would be daft not to take legal action. There are now “no win no fee” agreements where solicitors take on a case for nothing and only get paid at the end if the case is successful. You need to find a good solicitor that explains everything clearly. Some companies have hidden costs that you need to be aware off. Finding a company that offers straightforward advice for no charge is the best place to start.

I Love Italian Wine and Food - The Sardinia Region

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Sardinia region of southern Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea west of mainland Italy. Sardinia’s terrain is mountainous, and its beaches are excellent. Sardinia is known for archeological ruins and has become a tourist destination for the international jet set. Because of its exceptional location Sardinia has always popular, Invaders include Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Spaniards, without mentioning numerous Italian peoples. During part of the 18th and 19th Century it was united with the northern region of Piedmont in the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. The population is about 1.6 million.

Sardinia’s administrative center is Cagliari, an ancient university town on the southern coast of the island. Its population is approximately one hundred sixty thousand. The famous author D. H. Lawrence compared this beautiful city to a “White Jerusalem.” Another city of interest is Sassari, which has the best collection of Sardinian art.

Sardinia is Italy’s leading source of organic produce, and includes nearly one-third of Italy’s land cultivated biologically. The climate is subtropical and more than half the territory is devoted to pasture land. Food is plentiful, it is said that there are over 500 kinds of bread, perhaps one for every village. The inland is full of meat, including lamb, goat, pork and game, while the coast teems with fish, lobster, and eel.

Sardinia devotes about 107 thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 8th among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 28 million gallons, giving it a 12th place. About 57% of the wine production is red or rosé (only a bit of rosé), leaving 43% for white. The region produces 19 DOC wines and one DOCG wine, Vermentino di Gallura, one of the two DOCG wines produced in southern Italy. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. About 15% of Sardinian wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation. Sardinia is home to almost dozen four major and secondary grape varieties, about half white and half red.

There are no widely grown international white grape varieties in Sardinia. The best known Italian white varieties are Vermentino, Nuragus, and Vernaccia.

Widely grown international red grape varieties include Cannonau, known as Garnacha in Spain, and Grenache in France and elsewhere, and Carignano, known as Carignan in France. The best known Italian red variety is Monica, which probably originated in Spain, and may be related to California’s Mission grape variety.

Before we review the Sardinian wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.

Start with Melanzane in Pinzimonio, Smoked Eggplants in Mint-Basil Oil.

As a second course try Aragosta Arrosto, Roasted Lobster with Parsley and Bread Crumbs.

For dessert indulge yourself with Seadas, Pastry with Cheese and Bitter Honey.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY While we have communicated with well over a thousand Italian wine producers and merchants to help prepare these articles, our policy is clear. All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

Sella and Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna (V) DOC Reserva 2003 13.5% alcohol about $12.50

Cannonau wine may qualify as the mother of all European wines. It is made from the Grenache grape, which originated in Spain. The producer, Sella and Mosca, has the second largest contiguous vineyard in Italy. Over 6 million bottles are year are produced on an estate of more than 1500 acres. Some will say that such a humongous estate is unlikely to produce an outstanding wine. Such a claim may be incorrect, but this wine was far from outstanding.

The marketing materials stated that this wine is more or less ruby in color, tending to orange upon aging, with a light scent of grapes with a characteristic flavor ranging from dry to sweetish. It was aged three years in oak prior to its release and may be cellared for a decade or more. The wine is said to be particularly suitable to accompany red meats and seasoned cheeses. Uncork it at least one hour before serving.

I found that it had quite a light color for a red wine. To my mind, it was thin but pleasant with very little nose. I first tasted it with a rib steak marinated in a spicy sauce. This pairing brought out the fruit, and the wine was pleasantly acidic, but I would have preferred a more robust wine to balance the meat. I finished the bottle withy barbequed hamburgers, and it didn’t go quite as well. The wine was weak, perhaps affected by staying too long in the bottle.

Pecorino Sardo is a traditional sheep’s milk, semi-cooked hard cheese that comes in a sweet or ripened variety. The sweet variety is soft, and the ripened variety is hard. My cheese was ripened and treated with balsamic vinegar. A commercial roasted eggplant with sweet red peppers accompanied the wine and cheese. Everything went well together, the nutty flavors of the cheese balanced the wine’s fruit. In conclusion, I liked the wine best with the cheese. I don’t plan on buying this wine again, I found it a bit overpriced. Even though it didn’t cost a lot, one might have thought that a mass-produced wine from Sardinia would be somewhat less expensive.

Levi Reiss has authored or co-authored ten books on computers and the Internet, but to be honest, he would rather just drink fine Italian or other wine, accompanied by the right foods. He teaches classes in computers at an Ontario French-language community college. His wine website is www.theworldwidewine.com http://www.theworldwidewine.com . You can reach him at ital@mail.theworldwidewine.com ital@mail.theworldwidewine.com .

Braveheart (DVD) Review

Long before The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson directed another cinematic masterpiece, Braveheart. Filmed against the backdrop of majestic mountains and rolling meadows, it tells the historically-based (yet not entirely accurate) story of William Wallace, a common man’s warrior who led the Scottish people in rebellion against King Edward I, also known as “Longshanks”. Written by Randall Wallace, an American tourist fascinated with a Scottish statue of his namesake, the script collected dust in Hollywood for over a decade before Gibson made the brilliant decision to put it on the big screen. Just like The Passion, it’s a decision he would not regret.

Set in the 11th Century, Braveheart catalogues the struggle of Scottish serfs who labor under the brutal oppression of English occupation forces. Amidst these terrible conditions, William Wallace (Mel Gibson) falls in love with Murron MacClannough (Catherine McCormack). Insistent on not sharing his wife (a proclamation by the king gives local rulers “first-night rights” to new brides) Wallace secretly marries Murron. Nevertheless, an English knight assaults her, sparking a fight with Wallace. Fleeing the village, Wallace believes Murron has escaped and will soon meet him at a secret rendezvous point. But Murron is captured and executed by the king’s emissaries.

Angered by his wife’s murder, Wallace instigates a local rebellion, slaughtering all the king’s loyalists in his village. As his rebellion grows, a distraught Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan) dispatches his fabled Northern Army to destroy it. But the heroic Wallace delivers a stirring speech to rouse his men, while deploying an ingenious battlefield trick to defeat the king’s cavalry.

With the power and legend of Wallace growing day by day, Longshanks relies on his daughter-in-law, Princess Isabelle (Sophie Marceau) to broker a truce. But Isabelle’s power is limited, and Wallace realizes his people can only win freedom if backed by the Scottish nobles. Their appointed leader is Robert the Bruce (Angus MacFadyen) who vacillates between his own idealistic views and his father’s pessimistic pragmatism. Will the nobles join with Wallace? Will the Scots win their freedom? Only history tells us the answer.

With elaborate costumes, vivid battle scenes, and a noble hero as its focal point, Braveheart is more than your typical run-of-the-mill action movie. Part history, part Hollywood heroism - its timeless idealism strikes a cord with every viewer. In fact, the movie itself led to a revival in nationalistic pride that fueled the successful Scottish independence movement of the 1990s. It’s a testament to the strength and character of the real life William Wallace. A thousand years later, his enduring legacy continues to transform the European landscape, and Mel Gibson captures the noble warrior’s passion with an awe-inspiring Academy Award-winning masterpiece.

I AM STILL - a CD from D.C. Anderson is a lesson in performing

“Spin it a couple of times before forming an opinion. It’ll grow on ya.” - D.C. Anderson

D.C. Anderson is a New York City based actor, singer/songwriter and photographer. As an actor he has appeared on Broadway in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom Of The Opera,’ on National Tour in ‘Pippin’ (as Pippin), ‘The Life And Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby,’ and ‘Martin Guerre,’ regionally at the Guthrie and Steppenwolf Theaters and in episodic TV and movies made for television. As a cabaret performer he has made 6 appearances in the Mabel Mercer Foundation’s Cabaret Convention at Town Hall in NYC as well as gigged at Don’t Tell Mama, Triad, 88’s, Toulouse, Davenport’s, Downstairs Cabaret Theater, the Plush Room, the Cinegrill and Gardenia cabaret rooms. ‘Cabaret Noel: A Broadway Cares Christmas,’ the 2 CD holiday benefit recording, was initiated and co-produced by D.C. in 1993. In 1995, along with Karen Benjamin and Margaret Irwin, he produced the first in what has become an annual nationwide benefit event - ‘A Holiday Cabaret.’ His solo recordings include the CD’s ‘Time Was’ (1993), ‘The Box Under The Bed’ (1997), ‘Blue Summer Day’ (2000), ‘All Is Calm, All Is Bright’ (2001), ‘Collected’ (2002) and ‘Ballad’ (2004). D.C. is also a Bistro award-winning songwriter. A revue of his songs ‘Not For The Squeamish’ has been performed in New York City and Minneapolis. His songbook ‘Songs By D.C. And…Volume 1′ is available through LMLMusic.com. PBS stations nationwide have broadcast his 1997 concert as a part of the Brownville Concert Series. www.dcanderson.net

D.C. Anderson is a friend of mine. We’ve worked in the theatre together a few times. In the nineties, we performed together in a production of ‘Man Of La Mancha.’ Around that same time, I directed him in a production of ‘You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow.’ During that same season, I directed him in a production of ‘Dames At Sea.’ D.C.’s sister, Claudia and I worked together on a tiny little holiday production of ‘Amahl And The Night Visitors.’ Back then, D.C. gave me his first CD, ‘Time Was,’ and it played over and over at my house (still does). I have always thought that D.C. Anderson has a perfect voice (in the same way that I’ve always thought that Barbara Cook has a perfect voice). He has an ideal vocal production that I’ve always strived for in my work as a voice coach. The sound is musical, effortless and alive. There’s nothing forced about what D.C. does. His singing voice is his speaking voice made melodic. Since D.C. is a strong actor, there’s a real presence in his songs - he’s there in-the-moment in each song. Each song is a mini-play, or really, in these recordings, more like a small independent film. As a voice coach, I frequently use recordings by many famous singers, to have voice students hear this ability to fully become the song. D.C. Anderson’s recordings are a master’s lessons in performing this way.

“Theatre people” will enjoy this CD, while this CD is not really “theatrical” (in that it is not a bunch of show tunes). This CD is a collection of songs that are gentle, humorous, sad, witty, grieving, tender and touching. It’s a sort of song cycle of modern art songs - songs that are in a sort of folk style. I write that with trepidation, as it implies a sort of “stuffy” or “old fashioned” sensibility, and this CD is not “stuffy” or “old fashioned” even while it is in the best possible way, “old school.” This CD is like a well-made independent film. Not catering to the mass-market style of popular music today, “i am still” is true to itself, true to D.C. Anderson as an artist.

I was lucky enough to receive this CD in the mail a month ago and have been living with the CD ever since. Now I think it is time that I tell others they should add this CD to their musical libraries. My students of voice coaching should pay close attention. There’s a self-deprecating sense of humor in some of the songs and definitely in the note that accompanied the CD:

“You’ll either head right over to your computer to order additional copies for friends, relatives and co-workers from LMLMusic.com or iTunes or you’ll turn to your cat and say, ‘yet another CD from D.C. - isn’t that nice’ and put it under his bowl to protect the linoleum.”

D.C. has a cottage industry with his recordings at www.dcanderson.net (not unlike my own little cottage industry of voice coaching in San Francisco). D.C. plans to conquer the world of recorded sound, friend by friend - and I plan to help him make that a reality.

Now, for some of my favorite songs on the collection (they’re all wonderful, these are just my favorites today as I write this). First there’s ‘I Am Still,’ which is such a beautiful poem, a short film of a piece. I should mention here that the music is by Steven Landau and it is quite good. Steven, another old friend, was Musical Director of the First National Tour of ‘Titanic,’ and Musical Director and Arranger for the critically acclaimed Deaf West Theater production of ‘Big River,’ which played at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, on Broadway at the American Airlines theater, and on international tour. Years ago, I was part of a singing duo, Corber and Quick, with Judy Corber, who is now the brilliantly talented up-and-coming jazz-singer-to-know, Judith Wexler (www.judywexler.com). Steven Landau was our orchestra at the keyboard. He was a great arranger for us, and a great man. I’m so happy that he’s writing these great songs with D.C. They’re great pairing, along with the other composers on this collection.

This is how intimate the CD is - one of the funniest bits is the false start to ‘Have Fun,’ it takes us right into the recording session with D.C. The song is pretty damned funny as well, and Elizabeth Doyle’s music gives it a very enjoyable Maltby/Shire feel. D.C. is so great at putting hilarity, joy and fun right into his voice. ‘Sad Man’ - an achingly tender song with music by Ron Zimmerman with lyrics so simple and moving. The music has an almost retro sixties feel, while it sometimes reminds me of Sondheim, sometimes of Bacharach and David, it always perfectly suits the lyrics. The man in this song is so fragile, so vulnerable. This is simply an elegant song, sung by a master musician. The intensely intimate guitar work at the top of ‘Hard This Goodbye’ sets up the lonely lyricism that follows. The piano joins D.C. and the guitar for an effective trio. There’s a driving force to this ballad… driven to the hard goodbye of the title. There are few rare gems like ‘The Visit’ in this world, and I am grateful to D.C. and Steven for putting this one in such a perfect setting. Oh, I could write something about each song. Let me just add that ‘Dear Mother’ is exquisite. The final song, ‘Fixed Up Heart’ with music by Steven Landau, is another fluid blending of lyrics, guitar, piano, singer and song. Listen to this CD to discover which songs are your favorites.

Okay, I have to comment on ‘Hello Nancy, Goodbye Ron.’ Nancy Reagan and Ronald Reagan… D.C. has captured honest feelings that many of us experienced in dealing with this iconic couple - the man who turned his back on the AIDS crisis, and the woman who fights for stem cell research and a cure for Alzheimer’s. When the people in this country are so divided (so the media tells us), it is comforting to experience art of this sort, that deals with the grey areas (or, since we are divided red from blue, should that be the violet area?)

This is a great CD. It does grow on you as D.C. says. I find that it is a wonderful CD to listen to on the iPod, as it gives it that same intimacy with which the CD was recorded. Buy the CD, tell your friends about the CD. Go see D.C. live on December 4th in Manhattan at the Metropolitan Room and, believe it or not, in Fargo North Dakota playing Buddy in ‘Follies: The Concert’ at North Dakota State in February of next year.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope you’ll take the time to visit D.C.’s website and buy an album or two (the holidays are coming, and D.C.’s music makes for great gift giving).

Child Nutrition

Like an adult, every child needs appropriate amounts of calories, proteins, minerals, and vitamins to grow. The new Food Guide Pyramid Guidelines outline the amount of grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meats or beans people should eat daily. Children between the ages of four and six can usually have serving sizes recommended for adults, while younger children, who have smaller stomachs and lower nutritional needs, need smaller amounts of food. But apart from consuming the right quantity, parents should keep in mind that exposure to a wide variety of healthful foods early in a child’s life can set the stage for more variety later. Since children are often reluctant to try new foods and would be happy eating the same foods every day, the role of the parent is that of a guide towards a healthy and nutritional food lifestyle.

First of all, it is important for growing children to get the full range of important nutrients, especially protein, iron, calcium, and vitamin A. Although appetite variations are considered by experts as normal and might increase during times of rapid growth, or diminish during periods of slow growth, the general rule of thumb is that a 3 year old needs not more than 1,300 calories daily, a 10 year old around 2,000 and an adolescent may require as many as 2,800 depending on the height, weight and daily activity level.

- Fruits and Vegetables: Have always available in the fridge, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that your kids can chew in case they are suddenly hungry or in-between lunches. Remember to keep fruit juice on one service daily since the sugar this drink contains has a lot of ‘hidden’ calories. Broccoli, carrots, and vegetables with bright colors, usually attract children’s attention and help them fill their stomachs with something healthy instead of a bag of fried potato chips.

- Dairy products: Foods that are rich in calcium are essential for children and adults helping them build and maintain strong bones. Low fat milk and fat-free dairy products should be served daily and kids have to eat cheeses with 2-6 grams of fat per ounce. The needed calcium can also enter your child’s organism if he or she consumes orange juice and eats yogurt. Treats made with frozen yogurt and fruits, or milkshakes made with low-fat milk are always welcomed and provide the necessary sweet taste children usually crave.

- Grains: In fact, your child’s diet should be based on grains and starches. Whole grain products also contain iron that kids need and whole-wheat bread or pasta can give them the necessary grains for their bodies to function properly.

- Liquids: Remember to serve your child plenty of water and low-fat milk. Avoid sugary sodas and high-fat ice-cream milkshakes.

- Portions: Always serve appropriate portions and weight your kids often. Sugary foods or those containing high-fat ingredients should be generally avoided. Offer healthy snacks, like vegetables, fruits or a ball of whole-grain cereal and allow them to eat crackers with cheese and low-fat chocolate milk.

Finally, you have to check if your child is gaining the normal amount of weight as it grows up and that it exercises often. Outdoor activities and a healthy diet plan are enough to provide your kids with the necessary amount of energy they need and build strong bodies.

Cosmetic Surgery

Plastic surgery includes both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. While Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal body parts in order to improve the patient’s appearance and self-esteem, Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal body parts in order to improve their functions, and possibly rectify abnormal appearance.

The approximate surgery time for each surgery differs. Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck takes 2-3 hours; Botox takes just about 10 minutes and can be performed on an outpatient basis. Breast augmentation takes about an hour as compared to a breast lift or reduction which could take 2-3 hours. Chin correction or augmentation takes about an hour just the same as an eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. Droopy or Baggy eyelids can also be corrected. A face lift takes a little longer than the others approximately 3-4 hours. Liposuction is again subjective to what areas need to be worked on. It could be loose hanging flesh all over the body or it could be just one body part; so it could take 1-4 hours or even longer. Nose augmentation or rhinoplasty takes about an hour as compared to a nose reduction which could take 1-2 hours.
