Wildlife Habitats

Monday, March 31st, 2008

First Steps

Wildlife gardeners can provide breeding places and shelters for a wide range of animals including insects, amphibians and mammals. It is possible to buy nest boxes and shelters for all manner of creatures, from mason bees, bumble bees, bats and hedgehogs to ladybirds and lacewings. It is also possible to construct effective shelters economically using materials found around the garden. For instance, a great hibernating or breeding shelter for hedgehogs can be made by piling up some dry leaves in a quiet corner and leaning a sheet of plywood over it to keep the worst of the rain off.

Similarly, shelters for insects and other invertebrates can be made in a variety of simple ways, for example by drilling holes of different sizes into a piece of hardwood and leaving it undisturbed in a sunny corner of the garden or by bundling together a number of hollow stems, e.g. bamboo canes that can be left in a quiet corner. Log and stone piles also provide myriad breeding and shelter opportunities for wildlife.

Commercially produced bird nest boxes are now available for a wide range of species. Take the time to investigate the wild bird species found in your area and you can then be sure to buy the right box.

A log pile is a fantastic habitat for a whole range of creatures. Not only does it provide shelter, but as it rots many wild animals and plants will find it a rich and welcome source of food. These include stag beetles, wood wasps, woodpeckers, tree creepers, shrews, wood lice, hedgehogs, mosses and fungi. In addition, a damp log pile can provide an ideal habitat for amphibians such as toads and newts.

A Log Pile

The best time to construct your log pile is autumn. By late October many animals and insects will be looking for a safe, damp place to hibernate before the really cold weather sets in. Any wood can be used in a log pile, but native hardwood will support the widest range of insects. The size of the logs is not important, but to make a rich habitat bury the bottom layer of logs in the soil - preferably to around 10 cms deep. Many insects, such as the stag beetle, will only lay their eggs in damp, decaying wood deep in the soil. The log pile does not need to be very tall, since the top of the pile will be dry and less attractive as a habitat. It is better to have two or three low piles than one high pile. Once your pile is established it is important to leave it undisturbed. Moving the pile disturbs wildlife and can undo all the good work you have done. A log pile may take years to rot away, but it remains an important habitat throughout its life cycle. For instance, when the stag beetle eggs mentioned above eventually hatch, the larvae may spend up to five years chewing their way through wood rotting beneath the soil. Stag beetle larvae look rather like huge white maggots. The beetles are still common in the south-east of England although they are declining dramatically due to lack of habitat. Wherever you live, you will find a wide variety of beetles inhabiting your log pile.

Some gardeners add soil to their log pile, creating a ‘loggery’ - the wood equivalent of a rockery. This idea works best in a cool, shady area of the garden, where it can provide an ideal habitat for ferns and other shade-loving plants.

Hair Loss Treatment for Man: Enumerating the Different Options

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Many people suffer from hereditary loss of hair. For men, the abnormality is called Androgenetic Alopecia or “male pattern baldness,” which is implicated in 95% of hair loss cases. This type of hair loss is caused by an increase in dihydrotestostrone (DHT), a direct component of testosterone. While this type of hair loss is inevitable, it can be slowed using hair loss treatment for man and other various treatments.

Since the cause of male pattern baldness is caused by a rise in DHT, the most effective hair loss treatment for man is the one with that focuses on blocking the build up of DHT in the body. One such medication for male hair loss is finasteride. Finasteride is a hair loss treatment for man that works by preventing certain enzymes from converting testosterone into DHT.

Minoxidil is one of the most popular hair loss treatment for man. It is widely regarded as effective in about 25% of men suffering from baldness on the crown. It is applied twice a day in cream form. However, it is effective only when it is continuously used.

Surgery is one other hair loss treatment for man. Although the surgical procedures have undergone significant improvements, the effects are not evident until after several months have passed since surgery. In hair transplants, very tiny plugs of hair are taken from the side or back of the scalp, which are then transplanted onto bald spots.

Scalp massage is a traditional hair loss treatment for man. Massaging the scalp stimulates hair follicles and unclogs blocked oil glands in the scalp. It also encourages growth of healthier hair and scalp.

Tissue expansion is another type of hair loss treatment for man. In this procedure, tiny balloons are placed under the scalp between those areas with thick hair. Over a number of months, these balloons are gradually inflated.

Another hair loss treatment for man is to have proper diet as this is extremely important in hair loss prevention. What you are feeding your body will influence the different areas of system function. If you have an unhealthy diet, you have higher chances of developing hair loss. To prevent such thing from happening, be sure that you eat whole, natural foods as these will guarantee permanent good health. Make sure that your diet consists of whole grains, fresh fruits and lean meats. Protect your system by avoiding or cutting down on excessive caffeine, alcohol, tobacco products and highly processed foods.

Vitamins are another option for hair loss treatment for man. Taking vitamins that help prevent hair from thinning is another option for men who are suffering from baldness. These types of vitamins are valuable in aiding thinning hair and in the promotion of quick growth of healthy hair. These vitamins are typically a combination of amino acids, biotin, zinc, magnesium and vitamins B6.

Many who resort to this type of hair loss treatment for man report that these specific vitamins have produced positive results and that they already have thicker, shiny and healthier hair. If you want, you can take vitamins that are solely for balding and hair loss.

Professor Tim Darvill of the University of Bournemouth, right, and Professor Geoff Wainwright of the Society of Antiquaries begin an excavation inside the stone circle of Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, Monday March 31, 2008. A major excavation is beginning at Stonehenge as archeologists try to unravel some of the enduring mysteries of the famous prehistoric monument. The work marks the first time archeologists are being allowed to dig inside the stone circle since 1944. A goal of the research is to determine the age of the 'bluestones' that were imported from Wales when the first stones were placed at Stonehenge. Experts believe the bluestones were put in place in about 2,600 BC, but this is only an estimate. (AP photo/Chris Ison/PA)AP - Some of England’s most sacred soil was disturbed Monday for the first time in more than four decades as archaeologists worked to solve the enduring riddle of Stonehenge: When and why was the prehistoric monument built?

Photography Pioneers

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Modern day photography dates back to the early 1800’s. The word photography is derived from the Greeks; photos meaning light and graphein meaning to draw. The word was first used in 1839 by scientist Sir John FW Herschel to describe a method of recording images. That was 12 years after the first photograph was captured by Frenchman Louis Jacque Mande Daguerre, a professional opera scene painter. This first process took eight hours and he then worked 12 more years to reduce the expose time to under 30 minutes and keep the image from disappearing. These first photographs were exposed on metal that had been sensitized to accept the image and were called Daguerreotypes after their French inventor. Then came the tintype, invented in 1856 by Hamilton Smith. This was a thin sheet of iron used as a base for light sensitive material to produce a photograph.

Along came an American from upstate New York, George Eastman, who was very fascinated by photography, but frustrated with what he considered cumbersome exposure methods. He developed a dry photographic plate, patented it in the United States and England and began his first photographic business in 1880. In 1884, he replaced the glass plates with paper rolls allowing multiple images to be taken much more quickly. Four years later, on September 4, 1888 he patented he roll film camera . You could take your pictures, mail the camera to Kodak who would develop your 100 photos and send them back to you along with another roll of 100 exposures. Sound familiar? The big difference? You used to get your camera back, now you don’t!

These pioneers would be amazed with the equipment available to us today. We have the digital camera, the SLR,35mm, the camcorder, automatic exposure and automatic focusing, zoom lens and video. We even take pictures with our cellphones, which we can then download onto our computers. We have the luxury of going just about anywhere to get that perfect shot. Indoors, outdoors, underwater, or on top of a mountain. We attach our camera to a tripod and set the self timer so we can be in that majestic mountain scene.

When the equipment was of a size to be transported from place to place, they certainly didn’t have a camera case with a padded shoulder strap. We have a camera bag suited to fit every camera and the accessories. Backpacks for hiking up that trail and lens pouches.

We can take pictures as a hobby, while on vacation; supplement our income as a weekend photographer/writer for a local newspaper; or travel the world as a full-time photojournalist. Today, our photographic possibilities are limitless thanks, at least in part, to these photography trailblazers.

Music Comes To The San Diego Schools

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Over the last decade, schools across the nation have experienced the loss of music. The San Diego schools also had to replace music in many of its schools with other curriculum dictated by the state or federal law. The San Diego schools’ budget only stretches so far and, unfortunately, the arts have felt the biggest hit.

Frank Glasson and the Presidio Brass are changing all of that for the San Diego schools. A trumpet player by profession, Frank is also president of Local 325 of the American Federation of Musicians and director of Presidio Brass, a brass quintet. The veteran musician has performed with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, the San Diego Opera, and San Diego’s Westwind Brass, as well as ensembles in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Glasson saw that music was steadily disappearing from the San Diego schools and wanted to do something about it. He believes that the constant influence of television, movies, computers and CDs could erode the senses of youth to the more refined music. He enlisted the help of the other members of Presidio Brass - Ray Nowak, Mike McCoy, Sean Reusch, and Scott Sutherland, who play the trumpet, French horn, trombone, and tuba, respectively.

Working under the umbrella of the nonprofit San Dieguito Performing Arts Association, Presidio Brass developed the “Musicate the Mind” program for the San Diego schools. Musicate is an educational and musical outreach program, developed specifically to fill the musical void in the schools. With Glasson’s wife Robyn coordinating the events and developing contracts with the San Diego schools, Presidio Brass presents various customized programs for the different grade levels that fits any educational or outreach school requirement.

Glasson and his ensemble want to create relationships with the San Diego schools students, not just play music for them. Within that relationship, he hopes the children will grow to appreciate live music and keep it alive by becoming tomorrow’s supporters of live instrumental music. He plans to eventually do 200 programs per year all over Southern California.

For kindergartners through fifth graders, Presidio Brass introduces the brass instruments, their development, and historical context. The quintet members also give some basic musical concepts in a fun and engaging manner.

For fourth and fifth graders, the ensemble can integrate music into the core curriculum by teaching language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science through the language of music.

For middle and high schoolers, they present their Residency-for-a-Day program, which exposes San Diego schools students to the brass quintet. The hope is to inspire students to promote and cultivate their own musical abilities. Additionally, they want to give encouragement and instruction to those already playing instruments, knowing that such support is crucial.

For high schools, Presidio Brass gives master classes and concerts for their school orchestras and bands.

Though Glasson and the Presidio Brass quintet are in other school districts as well, the San Diego schools and their students will benefit greatly from this unique outreach musical program.

The Mind of a Serial Killer

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Have you ever wondered what motivates a serial killer? How safe is the area you live in? How well do you know your neighbor? Who are you shaking hands with everyday? TV has more than just one show about serial killers and we love to watch these shows! Silence of The Lambs does have some important revelations, that should not be discarded! The hunter seeking its prey, is very good at blending in and controlling just how much is revealed.

Criminal Minds, Csi, Csi Miami, Csi New York, Law and Order, and I have not named them all! Are we learning more about the mind of a serial killer? What intrigues you about the mind of a serial killer? Are we more aware of our surroundings? What really protects you from the mind of a serial killer? I ask these questions, because they deserve an answer and your reading this because your drawn into it!

These shows focus not on just some rapist, but most of the time on an intelligent killer, who slips through the cracks of society unseen. How does this person stay unseen? It is called, Perfect Camouflage . One that can adapt to any situation and leave with a powerful presence of being liked. The dateline mystery tv show is frustrating to watch because cops botch up the crime seen! Who does the crime scenes as good as a csi TV show? Look at the families in court that watch a killer go free, because the evidence is lacking!

Think about a cold calculated killer and you can watch the show Numbers! Is it all about numbers or timing? Is it the sheer joy of making the kill, that no one can figure out, except Sherlock Holmes! Who is next? Everyday we walk out the door we don’t know what will happen, but we know that a positive attitude gets us through. Am I right? When a person is home alone, the desires begin to fester and the thoughts of, what if manifest themselves.

Is it crazy for someone to write serial killers and get to know them? Is it insane for women to write them in prison and later on get married? Has parts of humanity come to the point of saying, is this all there is? One man who killed 48 people in Seattle Washington, stated that he wanted to do it! That was his motivation, while millions asked, why? . Let’s look back in time and look at Alexander The Great, Napoleon, Vladimir The Impaler.

How can a civilized community be threated by someone that has lost a few screws?

Out of all the millions what makes anyone so special? Is it being loved? Wanting to be loved? Being remembered and enshrined! Some of the serial killers, actually started killing animals and then evolved into killing people. It seems that some were going through a nurturing process and turned into what many call a mass of hideous monsters.

Ed Gein wanted mother’s attention and had needs that were never quite fullfilled. Buffalo Bill also got in touch with his feminine side, which lead to the torture and death of many young women in, Silence of The Lambs . Is the serial killer trying to figure himself out by pushing some limits? Is the serial killer finding out what pleases him/her the most? Does the killer like seeing his/her name in the news papers? Is the serial killer a collector of some trophies of his/her great conquest?

How much does being in control play in this insane senario? Control does seem to be an important factor and leaving an unhappy existence may be enticing for the killer. The show, Super Natural is on the trail of fighting evil, but they have to do some killing on the way. Staying in control of ones emotions and focused on the task at hand, does bring some pleasure. Or it seems to be on the show, Super Natural . We all have wants and needs, but what happens when we start to lose control?

Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Wayne Gacy and Ed Gein had something in common. They became well known and enshrined by a society that wants to know more, and TV will seek to meet that need. Every night of the week, we sit mesmerized in front of the TV and wait for that next clue. As Robert Stack used to say on Unsolved Mysteries, Will you be the next missing piece, in solving this puzzle?

If you have read books such as Silent Prey , you may have heard that blood smells like copper. Horror writers need that descriptive detail to pull you into the moment! Is Stephen King ready for his own nightmare? The thrill of trying to understand that point of which we are not to enter. That dark place we are not to go, because if we do, there is no going back! American TV shows delve into this dark unseen world, and the ratings rise through the roof! Where will this lead?

Basics of Database in SAP

Monday, March 31st, 2008

SAP like enterprise applications are specifically made up of programs with the data which are used by and created by those programs. In a meaningful way the data are organized within in a database, For the benefit of programmers, which are made easy so that they can access and find the necessary data to do something useful, for instance run a financial report or to create a sales order. The programs and the data will be in same database for SAP component or product like ECC, Normally each component will posses its own database (Even some exceptions exists) - a production system landscape composed of SAP Business Warehouse (BW), SAP ECC, plus SAP Customer Relationship Management (CRM) consists of three production databases. Given its basic station in the life of an SAP system, since it is important we have to understand the over all role of database.

Highlights of this hour comprise

Exploring the concepts as well as structures of an RDBMS

Determine which databases are supported by SAP

Learning the disparity between a primary and foreign key

Find out why indexes speed up data retrieval

Structure of Database

A database can be said as electronic warehouse where we can store information’s in an organized manner so that the system can find the desired information quickly.

The database is composed of tables, columns (called fields), and rows (called records or data). A simple example of a database is telephone book which are organized alphabetically so that it make the user to get their information very easily likewise the database is formed with the same concept. Instead of man the system will do the work so the work can be done easily and efficiently.

The basic structure of a database is somewhat comparable to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet in which columns (fields) store row after row of records (data). The major difference between a database as well as a spreadsheet is simply that databases be able to contain multiple tables that are connected to one another through relationships. Thus, a database can be thought of as a much more complex, plus ultimately much more useful, spreadsheet.

The database plays an important role in each SAP system, as it houses all the data that are used by that particular SAP component or else product. Several brands of databases exist, making it easy intended for an IT shop to choose a database vendor with which they are probably already well-known. Currently, SAP can use a range of different brand name database releases ranging from very expensive as well as imminently flexible to very inexpensive as well as yet quite capable.

It is significant to note that not all database vendors as well as versions are supported by SAP. SAP is likely to stick with the market leaders, over the years adding as well as removing support intended for certain vendors. In this way they not just limit the amount of database-specific customization they have to perform, but they endow with IT shops with flexibility plus choices, keys to success both for SAP as well as the IT organizations tasked with organize and supporting SAP solutions.

Trust And Training Your Dog

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Trained dogs are welcome almost anywhere because they behave around people and other dogs. They are a pleasure to take for a walk and can be let loose for a romp in the park. They are members of the family in every sense of the word, a good dog should be house trained, come when called, have few bad habits, stay when told, and not pull when taken for a walk.

Before, during, and after training your dog, you must continually built trust with him. One of the commands you will want your dog to learn is to come when called. To be successful, remember this, when your dog comes to you, be nice to him and reward this behavior. No matter what your dog may have done, be pleasant and use a kind word, a pat on the head and a smile. Teach your dog to trust you by being a safe place for him. When your dog is with you, follows you or comes to you, make the dog feel wanted.

When you call a dog to you and then punish, you undermine his trust in you. When your dog comes to you voluntarily and gets punished, the dog associates being punished with coming to you. Whether you are pleased or angry, your dog associates these feelings only with what was done last.

While establishing trust, you must also take charge and lead. Dogs are pack animals and you and your family are now the pack, at least as far as your dogs concerned. No pack can exist without a leader, and it’s either your or the dog. Few dogs actively seek leadership, and most are content when you assume the role.

Consistency is vital to the success of training. Your dog cannot understand “sometimes, maybe, perhaps” but he can and does understand yes and no. The more “black and white” or “yes and no” you can make it, the easier it will be for your dog to understand what you want. By observing us and studying our habits, dogs learn to anticipate our actions. Since they communicate with each other through body language, they quickly become experts and reading ours.

If you attribute human qualities and reasoning abilities to your dog, your dealings are doomed to failure. Your pet doesn’t experience guilt, and blaming the dog because “he ought to know better” or “she shouldn’t have done it” will not improve behavior. Your pet also does not understand every word you say, and is only able to interpret your tone of voice, and body language. Once trust and understanding are established, training becomes very easy.

Parental Kidnapping

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Have you ever heard day to day kidnapping news revolving around events like a mother kidnapping her own son from her businessman husband who abused their child? Or maybe you have heard cases like this: about a stepfather who kidnaps his step daughter then takes her out of the country to force his wife to pay him a fortune in order to get her back?

These types of cases of kidnapping are known as Parental Kidnapping, to be precise. While some people do it to free their children from abusive and tyrant spouses others do it deliberately for financial gain. Other reasons for parental kidnapping include neglecting the spouses needs, abuse of the children by the spouse, endangerment of the child and injustice.

Some parents feel that they have been ill-treated during the legal battle for the custody of their child. As a result they kidnap the child to satisfy their ego or they cannot do without their children.

A survey by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has revealed that over 300,000 children are abducted every year. This huge number reflects how laws are needed, and they must be made very stringent in order to convict the offenders and instill fear in people who are planning similar acts.

In addition, one of the worst parts of kidnapping attempts is the effect on the children due to all this. It can cause serious harm for his future development including emotional development, bad behavior in school, malnutrition and violent tendencies.

Help and Resources

There is hope and help. Via the Internet, you can access the NCMEC site and speak to a Call Center Specialist if you have speakers and a microphone with your computer. You can also insert the NCMEC RSS feed into your feed reader to keep abreast of missing children. Stay in tune with Amber alerts, too, either via wireless or other channels. Having a child abducted is the biggest fear a parent can face, and no parent wants to even imagine this situation presenting itself. To assist the authorities with locating a missing child, the use of a child identification kit can speed up the return of a loved one. The first 48 hours are the most critical when it comes to locating and saving a missing child. A preferred Child Identification Kit usually contains the following vital information for your child, recent photos, fingerprints, dental records, hair samples and other pertinent information about your child in one secure and convenient location. This could save the life of a child!
