Joomla, Easy Open Source CMS

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Joomla - An Open Source CMS worth looking at.

Joomla is an open source CMS system (CMS stands for Content Management System). I’m currently using Joomla to develop a number of themed web sites. There is a Christmas site, a recipe site and a travel site. Joomla has adapted nicely to each of these themes.

Generally CMS systems are extremely pricey and somewhat complex to use. I’ve found Joomla to be quite easy to use and now a month into using it I am really starting to appreciate it. If you don’t feel like using a simple page development tool and binding pages together by hand, then you should look at a CMS system. From what I’ve found, Joomla seems to be moving forward the quickest. I am currently using version 1.0.11 which is the latest of the 1.0 line.

Never use 1.0 software, that’s what people will tell you and for the most part, that’s true. However in the case of Joomla we must remember (or perhaps it’s my job to educate you) that Joomla’s roots (at least the 1.0 version) are in another CMS system Mambo. In fact, if you are familiar with Mambo, Joomla will be second nature (and the other way around).

Joomla is organized in menus, sections, catagories and items. It fits together kind of like this (general, remember this isn’t a book, it’s an article). A menu can link to a section, category or item in a number of ways (table, list, etc). A section can link to a category. A category can link to a number of items. So, if you need to organize your website by menu’s or tabs, this is ideal. Of course there is much more to joomla than that, but that is the first thing you’ll end up doing…just like I did.

Joomla extensions, templates, plug-ins, components One of the things I love about Joomla is the wide assortment of plugins and templates available for it, both commercial and free. I found a site, joomlahacks.com which has a ton of these things (over 200 freely downloadable templates). I found one that was appropriate for each of my sites and with a little modification (you are allowed to modify most templates as they’re part of the GPL) GNU Public License, or LGPL (lesser GNU public license).

Components that I am using are the metataggenerator component (downloaded) and the SEO component (allowing more google readable url’s for my web site. Also, like I said I’m using a differently downloaded (and personally modified) template for each of my sites. My sites are Christmas, Recipes and Travel. There are a couple more, but why go into those details.

If you go to joomla.org, you can actually test drive the software. I did this before setting up the christmas site. I wanted to be sure that joomla was right for me.

They’ve set up a joomla based server and give you a demo account to play with. This is great to get a feel for the software. I think the site gets reset every 30 minutes or something, so don’t expect your content to stay there. Also, please please refrain from spamming on this website! The joomla folks have been good enough to give us a great product and let us try it out live, please don’t take advantage of their good nature by putting spam up there.

Which technologies does Joomla use You could also call this section what does my webserver/hosting package need to run joomla ?

- PHP, joomla is a PHP based system. If you don’t know what PHP is, you should search around a bit. It’s a language for web development (I believe loosly based on perl) which can have html embedded in it. I personally compare it to Java jsp’s. I needed to do a bit of PHP modification on the travel and recipe sites to make things fit properly, but this is not the fault of the original templates or Joomla, I just wanted a bit of a different look.

- MySQL, joomla needs access to a mysql database. It’s installs will create it’s own tables, but of course you need to have the appropriate permissions to do this.

That’s it…although, if it is running on an apache web server it also makes the SEO stuff work better as you can (possible depending on your hosting) change the .htaccess file to rewrite urls appropriately.

Linux makes a nice joomla platform, but there’s no reason why it can’t run on any platform which has the above capabilities.

On my host (godaddy) it was dead easy. I just downloaded joomla to my pc, uncompressed the zip file, then uploaded the joomla stuff to the appropriate directory on my server. From there, I tried to acess that directory via the web browser and voila! Up comes the installation screen. I simply followed the instructions and there it was. Perhaps I’ll write another article on installing joomla on godaddy (a more current one than the old ones I found which scared me away from doing this at first).

Performance I don’t have much of a frame of reference for this. Also my templates are a little heavy on the glitter. I’d say it’s reasonable for what it’s doing and obviously the faster the cpu and the more bandwidth your provider gives you the better joomla will perform.

Future Joomla 1.5 is now in beta, when it’s considered production ready you can be sure I’ll be installing it (on a test site) and seeing what’s new!

Here are some websites that I’ve done with Joomla, feel free to kick the tires (from an end user perspective).

Try Joomla out for yourself. Keep checking back here for future reviews on the other free products I used to put gocurious travel, gocurious christmas, gocurious recipes and gocurious books on the net.

Is Speed Dating Hazardous to Your Health?

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Have you found your better half yet? If you have not, I wish you luck! Regarding the people I meet every day and the number of the current world population, luck isn’t the only thing that can help you. Have you considered speed dating?

If you believe that you have a better half somewhere then you probably believe in destiny. If everyone were destined to meet his or her better half, then you have nothing to worry about? Does it matter where you would start from? After all, are you destined to meet this special someone or not?

Moreover, it will be better if you speed the process a bit. What do you think about speed dating? What is speed dating exactly? Just go out, go wherever you want and point the desired person. The important thing in speed dating is its speed. Do it quickly! Why should you wait? Are you wondering where you can find about the different speed dating options? It is no problem at all. Just check on the World-Wide-Web.

Do you know anything about speed dating? Every time I hear the words “speed dating” I recall of the horror movie “Valentine.” The story was about two beautiful girls who decide to try speed dating.

Don’t you just need to go out of your room? May be it is time to communicate with real persons. Nobody will eat you or even hurt you, I promise. Just try it. Now it is easier than ever. You can find all the needed information on the World-Wide-Web.

When I first heard about the web site, which was used for speed dating, I was burst into laughter. What was this thing? Was this cyberspace convenient speed dating? Oh, come on, are you kidding? However, once I saw him checking the web site and I get rather intrigued. I saw him chatting with women who were thousands of miles away.

This distant friendship made me feel in a strange way. I was surprised how much access we have from our homes. You can contact with people from every place on the world, you just need a personal computer and high speed Internet.

I was amazed how interested he was in speed dating. He even met some girls through speed dating. Speed dating makes it so easy to find your soul mate. Speed dating is not influenced by shyness or prejudices. You can meet also people who are near you. Just choose only to speed date in your current region.

Have you tried speed dating already? If your answer is no, I suggest you to try it right now. It is no more fashionable to date in the bars. May be you do not prefer to spend your precious weekends wandering through the smoky bars, seeking for your mate. Everyone gets bored of the club scenes. After all, you live in the age of the online speed dating!

Obesity In Dogs - The Problem Isn’t Just For Humans Anymore

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Most overweight dogs were made that way not by themselves, but by their owners! Few owners realize that the health related problems in dogs are the same as they are in people. While dogs don’t suffer from heart attacks like we do, obesity does put a great strain on their cardiovascular systems.

Other internal organs suffer as well. Obesity promotes pancreatitis among other gastrointestinal disturbances. Overweight dogs seem to suffer from more skin ailments and coat disorders than slimmer dogs. Muscle and joint disorders including intervonterbal disk disease occur much more frequently with overweight dogs.

Causes of obesity are numerous, but diet is at the top of the list. Table scraps and “people food” have a much greater effect on a small animal. The wrong kind of dog food can do the same thing. Pet food manufacturers have given us a wide range of brands and formulas geared for different stages of a dog’s life. Pet owners can become confused, and many just buy the name brand.

As dogs age their energy requirements drop considerably, and require senior-type diets containing high fiber and fewer calories. Growth formula dog foods should only be given to puppies and pregnant or lactating dogs. Overfeeding is another “common cause” you should avoid, no matter how much they beg. Remember, overweight means poor health and shorter life.

The energy requirements will vary with each animal. You should find the ideal weight of your dog from your veterinarian, and then check the label of the dog food you are using. Feed the recommended amount for 3-4 weeks, while checking your dog’s weight frequently. If a weight gain is seen, reduce the food amount, if a loss, you can increase the amount.

Your pet is counting on you for regular feedings, and it is up to you to provide the right type and the proper amount to keep them healthy.

Randy Jones and his partner Brent Jones have been in the pet industry for a long time. Recently they formed Joncopets.com http://Joncopets.com . Understanding Chess Move By Move

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

It is so much to learn when you first started playing chess. These includes understanding the chess board, understanding chess move by move and so on. No doubt the more you take time to learn and apply the strategies you learnt, the better you would be in the long run.

With that said, it is worthwhile to understand chess move by move, both basic and special moves. In a game of chess, each piece moves in a different way. Normally, a piece can not pass through squares occupied by other piece. However, it can move to a square occupied by the opponent’s piece. When a piece moves to a square occupied by the opponent, it is said to ‘capture’ the opponent. Hence, the piece which is captured is eliminated from the board for the remainder of the game.

There are six different pieces in a chess game, namely - King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawn. The King moves orthogonally and diagonally across only one square at a time. The Queen moves orthogonally or diagonally across any number of squares. The Rook moves forward, backward, left or right across any number of squares. Bishop moves diagonally across any number of squares. The Knight moves in two squares in one direction and one space orthogonal to it. It is the only piece which jumps over other pieces, the rest cannot jump over a square occupied by a piece. The Pawn can move only one square at a time backward or forward. However, if the Pawn is the first piece moved at the start of a game, i.e. if it is the opening move of the game, it can move two squares forward. The Pawn can move one square diagonally in front to capture an opponent piece. It cannot capture an opponent piece by moving forward straight.

Apart from the basic moves, it is also important to understand special chess moves as well. One such move is called ‘Castling’. This involves the King and the Rook. If the King and the Rook have not moved yet and all the squares between them are blank, then the King moves two squares forward, towards the Rook. At the same time the Rook moves the two spaces the King has just jumped over. However, this move cannot happen if the King is threatened or has to move through a danger square.

Another special chess move involves the Pawn. If the Pawn moves two squares forward on its first move, it can be captured on the square it has jumped over, as if it had moved only one square only, during the turn immediately after its two-square move. This can be done only by another Pawn.

Remember, the more you increase your undestanding of chess move by move, the better chess player, you will become.

A Collective Voice

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Midterm elections came to completion on Wednesday as Virginia decided to elect a Democrat to the Senate. That race signaled the end of politics as usual over the last six years of full-throttle Republican rule of the Executive and Legislative branches of our United States government. The Democratic Party has to go back to 1994 to remember its majority voice in Congress. Twelve years may seem like a blip on the radar over the course of time, but living through those twelve years, witnessing the havoc wreaked first hand, elongates those years dramatically. Parents watching their teenagers walk out the door on first dates also recognize how time expands to accommodate fears and anxiety. How much deeper the feeling when we gather up what our country has lost and compare it to what might have been. But now we have hope, the hope of a dialogue with a President who now has no choice but to listen and work with a Congress that will not take no for an answer.

But this new leadership will be held accountable in a way that its predecessors have not been. Even as Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-California) began appearing on network news programs as the next Speaker of the House, we were reminded that this victory was as much a vote against President Bush as it was for Democratic values. Basically, it is great to win, and win very well, but it is now time to make good. Rep. Pelosi, as House Minority Leader, seems to have already started that ball rolling. In order to gather the resounding results she and her party achieved this week, she made it the Democratic Party’s job to take on every criticism, every question raised by Republican opponents during the campaign. No assault would be left dangling or unanswered. People would know where Democratic candidates stood. Person by person, interchange by interchange, the Democratic Party would raise its voice as one. That the country responded back in kind, I’m sure, is no surprise to Rep. Pelosi. These election results are the efforts of many people charted together toward a common goal.

Would that we in the faith community could do so well getting our point across. I believe we can learn a lot from soon-to-be Speaker Pelosi, the Democratic Party and the American people in presenting our message, responding to voices that would seek to divide us and welcoming the country to give us honest feedback on how well we are doing. In short, we need a goal, we need a plan and we need a vote.

We don’t have to go very far or look very hard to determine the goal before us as a people of the Christian faith community. The first commandment given to Moses is quite simple: I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other Gods before me( Exodus 20:2-3). This same sentiment is picked up a few books later: Hear, O Israel: The Lord God is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might (Deuteronomy 6: 4-5). Years later, when pressed by the Pharisees to determine the greatest commandment, Jesus didn’t miss a beat: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22: 37-40). This is our goal, defined by our God through our community: love God, love ourselves and love our neighbors.

Inherent in our goal is a simple plan. In everything we do we must put our love for God into action. Into every thought, word and deed, we are to infuse God’s love for us and for our neighbors. We must start our day with loving actions toward ourselves, continue through the day being loving toward other people and complete our day in gratitude, blessed by God’s loving kindness. Every time we meet opposition to our goal of loving God, ourselves and each other, we must confront it with the blessing of God’s love in our own actions. Every time we act as if we really believe God loves us, we become more authentically Christian, and it is easier for people to believe God is making a difference int he world. Every time we behave as loving, caring, accepting people, we share God’s love and our collective voice grows stronger, more joyful, more loving.

Putting that action plan to the test of a vote among our United States constituency might be an eye-opener for us all. Would we be willing to hear what people have to say to us about what the Christian faith looks like in practical application in the real world? As much as we like to lean on the crutch of imperfection, I believe we are not so willing to parcel out that kind of mercy to our politicians. If you were running as a Christian and were called upon to define how you live your faith in realistic terms, could you?

There is no mystery about what our collective Christian voice can be. We can talk all we want about our perceptions about religious practices and systems, what is moral and how we think Jesus would handle any variety of obscure circumstances. But what we know now is most likely the first thing we learned about faith: God loves us. The second is that we are to love ourselves and each other in practical, concrete ways. Not just the people we like, but everybody. That is the collective voice by which we can be recognized and known.

How To Play A One Octave MIDI Pedal Board

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Arranger keyboards such as the Yamaha Tyros 2 and the Korg PA800 are becoming extremely popular since the massive decline in electric organ sales. These arranger keyboards provide automatic bass lines, which is fine if you are playing basic triad and seventh chords. With a MIDI pedal board you can divert the bass note in the auto chord system to the bass pedal note you want and still keep the rhythmic effect or you can play your own bass line with no auto features added at all.

All exercises in this article should be practised on a one octave pedal board and you should be sat down at a keyboard with the MIDI pedal board placed directly underneath the keyboard. The pedal board should be placed so that top C on the pedal board is level with Middle C on the keyboard. Depending on the length of your legs, you can make small adjustment to the placement of the pedal board to suit. You should be able to play bottom C and top C with out any discomfort.

So here are the five top tips to help you to play the bass pedals.

1 Line your left leg up with G on the pedal board. You can then use your leg below the knee to swing to the left of G and play bottom C then swing all the way back up to play Top C. Try to keep the top part of your leg, above the knee, still.

2 When playing the bass pedal with your left foot, keep your leg still and use your ankle to make the pressing motion.

3 Play slowly, on the pedal board, C major scale, C minor scale and a chromatic scale starting with bottom C. Play these scales up and down and repeat ten times.

4 Play this sequence of notes on the pedal board starting with bottom C. C, D, E, F, D, E, F, G, E, F, G, A, F, G, A, B, G, A, B, G, C. Repeat ten times.

5 Play a chromatic scale on the pedal board with left hand chords. Starting with bottom C, play chromatically up to top C and back down again. Repeat ten times.

The important thing to remember when practising the above bass pedal exercises is to play the bass pedals slowly and stay acurate. If you play to fast to start with, you will learn to play the bass pedals wrong. If you start slow and accurate, speed will come later but you must be patient.

If you practice the above exercises every day for six months, you will be playing the bass pedals like a pro.

Now Bad Credit is not Considered in Unsecured Tenant Loans

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

If we analyze financial market, it is generally seen that people with poor credit score faces problem in procuring funds from the market. Most of the poor credit scorers are asked to place collateral and besides of that collateral, they are also attached with an obligation to pay high rate of interest which affects their budget. And just imagine what if the person is not in condition to provide collateral to the lender? In such case, is the person can still procure funds. The answer is yes and it is possible through bad credit unsecured tenant loan.

Bad credit unsecured tenant loans are especially customized in such manner to meet the needs of bad credit non homeowners. Not only the non homeowners, but also those homeowners can apply for bad credit unsecured loan that are not willing place collateral.

Before we move further, there is need to understand how does bad credit happens. Bad credit happens when there is imbalance between income and expenses of a person. That is, when the person spends money lavishly and extravagantly without considering his income and after that he faces difficulties in repaying his entire bills. And, when the person fails in repayments it turns up with bad credit in the credit report of a person. Other factors which are considered as bad credit for a person are:

• County court judgment

• Individual voluntary agreement

• Bankruptcy

• Arrears

• Defaults etc

After considering the reasons of bad credit, it is obligatory to know for a person that who falls under the category of tenants. They are:

• Council tenants

• Private landlord tenants

• Living with parents

• Students etc.

While availing bad credit unsecured tenant loan the person is required to provide certain details of his employment, flow of income, financial status, and address proof. Here, these proofs acts as security to the lender as there no property is required to keep it as collateral. Thus, there is also no risk on the property regarding repossession. But, this doesn’t means that on missing any payment the lender can’t take any action against borrower rather he has the legal right to sue the borrower.

Bad credit unsecured tenant loan are less time consuming as there is no asset valuation. Today every banks, financial institutions and building societies provide loan as per the convenience of the borrower. But, only thing required is that the person must choose the lender offering loan deal with low annual percentage rate and favorable terms.

Eventually, we can say that bad credit unsecured tenant loan not only provides financial assistance but also improves the credit score of a person.

Children’s Portraits - An Oil Painting that Lasts a Lifetime

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

For centuries, children’s portraits have been captured on oil and canvas. However, in the new digital media age oil paintings have become less popular as photography has grown has become more fashionable and commonplace. While photography is certainly a less complex medium, the value of a custom-created oil painting is priceless, as it will create a memory that lasts for many generations. The good news is that commissioning a custom painting is not necessarily the arduous process that it was when painting was the only form of image capture.

Using Photographs for Oil Paintings

Thanks to photography, the subjects of oil paintings no longer have to spend days paused in one single position as the painter captures his or her image. When commissioning a custom painting, most people will now bring a photograph of the subject to the artist. Whereas in the past, children’s portraits were time consuming and required a great amount of patience, the process has been somewhat simplified by the process of copying a photo to canvas for the purposes of creating a custom painting, such as a children’s portrait.

In addition to using an artist to create the oil painting, there is now complicated software that facilitates the transfer of a photo to canvas. This method, known as photo-to-campus, is usually less expensive (and less valuable) than hiring an artist to paint the masterpiece. However, the result can be striking.

A Unique Gift

A custom painting, such as children’s portrait makes a great anniversary gift idea. Whether it be for parents, grandparents or other family members or friends, a custom painting is a way to commemorate and honor the years of love that have existed between not only the couple themselves, but also to recognize all that that has sprung out of their union. Children themselves can commission a custom painting for their own children’s portraits or one of themselves for an anniversary gift.

Picture Perfect Value

A custom oil painting, such as a children’s portrait is usually priced based on how many subjects are represented in the portrait. The more subjects present, the greater amount of time and difficulty the painting will involve. Therefore, the price will be greater. However, the cost of a custom painting may be worth price as it will be a cherished piece of art and family heirloom for many generations.

Photo-to-Canvas

With the photo to canvas process, it may be possible to create a custom painting, such as a children’s portrait, for an anniversary gift without having to find a willing artist. Most of the supplies can be purchased at retail stores and, contrary to popular belief, the process does not require any expertise. After copying the photo to canvas, simply paint over the print with the oil paints and create a custom painting of a children’s portrait yourself. Be careful not to expect that the children’s portrait will turn out exactly the same as if a professional had created it, however, sometimes a personal touch is the anniversary gift that will be cherished the most of all.

Allan Holder is the founder and owner of www.mypicturepainter.com http://www.mypicturepainter.com which is a site dedicated to the revival of the lost art of portrait painting. In today’s fast paced world, sitting for a portrait painting is simply not practical. We allows the user to submit a photo to our network of talented artists who will paint a personal oil painting from your photo.

Mobile Phone To Mobile Computer??

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

With the current mobile phone market in the UK reaching an all time high there seems to be a multitude of handsets on the market. New and updated models hit the market at a rate of around 4-5 per month. Many features seem to bundled into these phones as standard and the costs of making them has soared to the point that many of the mobile phone networks in the UK are now pushing for 18 month contracts to reduce the cost impact. Phone manufacturers are now having to make a choice between producing a handset that covers all the bases at a respectable level to those handsets designed to do an outstanding job in one particular area for a more specific user. How many times have you heard someone tell you that they don’t use their camera, multi media messaging (MMS) or that they never listen to the radio function.

No sooner had the general public become accustomed to getting all this extra functionality from their phone, along comes 3G (3rd Generation) with it’s ability to offer mobile to mobile video calling and better access to internet resources it was almost certainly going to be a hit. The first real push in the 3G market in the UK came from a company who were specifically targeting this new generation of phones, aptly names Three.

A mobile without a camera these days is considered old and out of date, they are getting better and better the number of mega pixels (the higher the number the better quality picture you can take) seems to be getting larger each month and with it the storage capacity increases to cover the larger overheads. Very few models available in the market today are without the now “standard” features of a camera, sound recorder, alarm, internet browser and of course the much loved games. These days with the addition of “organiser” functions like calendars, task management and of course your “contacts” people rely more and more on their mobile.

For those people who are into music then Sony Ericson have released their “Walkman” phone W810i with a built in MP3 Player and fantastic handset design, or the W850 which also includes two way video calling.

Mobile phones are becoming more and more like a computer, with internet access, the ability to surf the web and pick up your emails, organise your diary and even the addition of instant messengers you really can hold your life in the palm of your hand.
