Costumes In Flames: How To Protect Your Children From Catching On Fire This Halloween Holiday!

Until recently, I thought about the usual holiday protection issues of something in the candy, walking the kids in groups to protect them from strangers and maybe the stray bunch of neighborhood big kids wanting to steal all of the treats from the kids. There is one thing that I wouldn’t have ever thought about if I hadn’t seen it myself on our local channel 4 news broadcast.

What about your child’s own costume?

Imagine your little one walking down the steps of someone’s porch, only for them to be engulfed in flames due to a glowing jack-o-lantern catching their cape or skirt on fire and due to it taking less than a minute for 95% of the synthetic materials to burn, you have even less time to put the child out.

As a father myself, it is a horrific thought and that is the main reason that this article isn’t as cheery as it would normally be. In research of this topic, it has been discovered that ” fire resistant ” means that it is only meant to hold up to light heat from a flame. This doesn’t protect a child that passes closer than a foot to the heated area. That in it self means that your child could walk down a porch, just as I explained in the example and catch him/herself on fire unknowingly.

In testing the few that claim to be ” fire retardant ” or ” fire proof “, there were no heat exposure flame ups but, on direct flame testing, all failed and ended up proving that they were in fact able to stop burning only if the direct flame was removed so that the material wouldn’t continue to burn on its own unless your child’s skin was still inflamed.

Now, the good news is that you can prevent this from happening and continue to let your little ones still dawn the form of their favorite super heroes and monsters. The answer is in following the simple home recipe for fire proofing your child’s costume.

Directions:

Take 4 oz. Of Boric Acid and 9 oz. of Borax (both can be found in most pharmacies).

Mix the two chemicals with 1 gallon of warm water

Soak the costume in the compound and let it drip dry.

With that said, I wish you all a safe and happy Halloween. For those of you still shopping for your costumes and candies, be sure and check out our great 60% off selection at www.accessgnome.com/ http://www.accessgnome.com/ .

The Internet is changing the wholesale/retail landscape daily. In today’s market the shopping sector is taking about a tenth of all retail shopping sales in the US, and the percentage in other countries is not as high. One reason we use the internet is to buy merchandise at a discount to retail.

One of the biggest benefits of shopping online is the convenience and access to more products and information 24 hours a day 7 days a week. All purchases are made through safe and secure servers. It’s safe to say SSL is extremely sophisticated software and safe. Always know where your cards are and keep them in a safe place.

The phenomenal success of online retailers such as Amazon and Expedia is proof that internet shopping is practiced - and trusted - by millions. Of course the other major hurdle for internet shopping is shipping charges, sometimes shipping is much more than the product. Whether we love it or hate it, Internet shopping is convenient, provides a wide choice and competitive prices. Internet shopping is a big time-saver. As mentioned above, Internet shopping is very much like conventional in-home shopping from catalogs or mail orders. Despite the toughening competition, Internet shopping is likely to continue to grow.

Want To Play Guitar Like The Pros? Part 1 - Chords

Many consider playing the guitar seems easy, and for others playing the guitar seems hard. A popular part of playing the guitar is chords. Whether it’s strumming them, plucking them or anything else you have to have a basic understanding of chords. All chords aren’t the same. Power chords are a good way to begin learning chords, and advancing to normal chords is usually the best way to master them.

The chords in guitar songs are almost always strummed. The only time when they are not strummed is when they are played separately, and in that situation the notes are usually plucked. If each note of the chord is picked individually, the composer might even decide to skip some notes. A lot of chords can begin from power chords, which are just 2 notes. Power chords are mostly used by the younger players with small hands. If the person cannot stretch there hands out for the whole chord, then they can just play two strings that will just produce the same sound. Although the chord and power chord produce the both sound, they are both very different. The power chord will always have at least 2 notes, but the power chord will not have more notes than the normal chord. For example, let’s say someone was playing the E minor chord. The E minor chord consists of the 2nd fret in both the 5th and 4th strings. That form is usually the most common form of the E chord, but it can also be considered a power chord. Power chords usually give the most basic sound possible. If you add more depth to the chord, it will become a normal chord. In order to do that, you have to add more notes that are part of the power chord. Let’s go back to the E chord example. The two notes are B and E. In order to do this, you have to know the fret board. To add more depth to this power chord, you must add more B and E notes to the chord. The 6th and first strings open are both E notes. By adding those notes, you now have 3 E notes, and 1 B note. To make it even, you would need to add 3 more B notes. The 2nd string open is also B, and so is the 4th fret of the 3rd string. To do this chord, the persons hand would have to stretch from the 2nd to 4th fret. For people with big hands, that would be considered easy. But for others, a power chord would seem like an easier option.

Learning the chords isn’t the only lesson that needs to be learned for chords. Switching to different chords is also a big part of playing them, especially if a song requires lots of different chords. A good way to practice the speed of switching chords is to rest your fingers in the position of the chords. Going back and forth, without playing the chords, will help you gain speed. This can be done while watching your favorite TV show, or outdoors just to relax. After a few minutes of switching, you can add more and more chords. Finally, when you can switch fast enough, you can start to play the chords. Start out slow, but every time you accomplish perfection with the speed, bump yourself a little bit faster. In the end, you will be able to play chords and switch chords a lot faster than you started out with. Improvement is the key!

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is difficult to achieve because we have so many health factors to consider and food choices to make. We know antioxidants are good for us so we want to eat lots of colorful fruits and vegetables because they contain phytochemicals like carotenoids and flavonoids which neutralize the free radicals that cause the age-related degenerative diseases. We know that we may not get all the antioxidants that we need in our food so we take supplements to ensure an adequate supply of antioxidants. But what about the actual food we eat. One of the major problems with our modern diet is that the food we eat is a tasty combination of saturated fats and highly processed and quickly digested carbohydrates. However in the last several years, people have become so concerned about fats in their diet that they have substituted carbohydrates and avoided even the good unsaturated fats in lean meat, olive oil and other plant oils. Now everybody seems to be eating a medium- to high-carbohydrate diet without giving proper attention to the type of carbs that they eat.

Not all carbohydrates behave the same in our bodies. We have been told for years to avoid simple carbs like honey and white bread and eat complex carbohydrates that our body doesn’t digest and turn to glucose as quickly. However determining whether a food containing carbohydrates is absorbed and raises our blood sugar quickly or slowly is not at all intuitive. Scientists have done a lot of rigorous testing over the past several years and have found that white bread and baked potatoes raise our blood sugar level much faster than honey, jams and chocolate bars. These scientists developed a numerical index called the Glycemic Index or GI to compare the ability of different carbohydrate containing foods to raise the body’s blood sugar levels - or in other words the speed of conversion to glucose. GI values are determined by feeding human subjects who have fasted overnight a fixed amount of the food and then measuring their blood glucose levels at fixed intervals of time. Pure glucose is set at 100 and then other foods are compared to this profile. Testing is time consuming and the tests have to be averaged for a number of individuals. However these studies have yielded some surprising results such as the fact that the starches in rice, bread, potatoes and many types of cereals were absorbed and raised blood sugars very quickly but the sugars in fruit, candy, chocolate and ice cream did not result in prolonged rises in blood sugars. In other words many of the starchy foods had a much higher Glycemic Index than many of the sugary foods. Needless to say these results seem counter intuitive and have caused a lot of controversy in the food industry. The rate of absorption is very dependant on how the carbs are bound up with the food fiber and the particle size. For example less gelatinized products like al dente spaghetti and oatmeal have lower GI values and stone ground flours have lower GI values than finely ground flours. The fibrous coat surrounding beans and seeds stop enzymes from getting at the starchy carbs inside and will slow the digestion of grainy breads, legumes and barley. The acidity of foods also slows down digestion and vinegar, lemon juice, pickles and sourdough bread will result in lower GI meal values.

The Glycemic Index is important not only to diabetics but also to non-diabetics because we need to know what foods will keep our blood sugars on an even keel and not raise them too high and then have them plummet down again causing hunger. The slow digestion of low GI foods and the gradual rise and fall in blood-glucose response helps people with diabetes control their blood sugar levels and increase their sensitivity to insulin. Low GI foods will help healthy people delay hunger pangs and promote weight loss in overweight individuals. In addition low GI carbohydrates can reduce blood cholesterol levels and also reduce our risk of heart disease. High blood glucose spikes can result in oxidative stress leading to the formation of plaque that can cause atherosclerosis and even blood clots. So keeping our blood sugar levels fairly level and low seems like what we should be trying to achieve through healthy eating. How do we go about achieving this?

The first step is to look at what carbohydrates we are consuming and the GI levels of the meals that we are eating. Then we should try and ensure we have at least one low GI food in each meal to keep the overall meal GI close to 50. Most fats and proteins have no effect on the GI level of our meal because they don’t contain carbs. However watch out for saturated fats and too many calories. Let’s look at some meals and see what substitutions we could make. The GI values are shown in brackets.

Breakfast

Cut back on Corn Flakes (92), Rice Krispies (82) and substitute All-Bran (32) or switch to a cereal based on oats, barley or bran. Stop eating white bagels (72), white bread (70) or whole-wheat bread (77) and switch to pumpernickel (50) or sourdough (55). Fruits are mostly low GI foods and surprisingly orange juice (46) is very good.

Lunch and Dinner

Eat your colored vegetables and make your salad dressings with olive oil and vinegar. Avoid parsnips (97) and substitute pastas like al dente white spaghetti (38), linguini (46) or macaroni (47) for Instant white rice (87) and potatoes - baked (85), red-skin peeled and boiled (88). Except for parsnips and potatoes most vegetables have a low GI value.

Additional information on GI values can be found at the University of Sydney website www.glycemicindex.com/ or in the “The New Glucose Revolution: Shopper’s Guide to GI Values 2006.

Are We Living In The End Times? (Book Review)

Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins’ book Are We Living in the End Times? directly confronts current world events and comments on biblical prophecies made thousands of years ago that clearly mirror many of the events of our time. Written in layman’s terms, with a flowing style and chronology, this is a book interested readers can burn through in a couple of hours. Breaking down the events of The Great Tribulation, the book reads like the non-fiction version of the authors’ popular fiction series, Left Behind.

The book is divided into three parts: context, events, and personalities. The opening chapters explore the context of current events in relation to biblical prophecy, while providing a background on the unfailing accuracy of the Old and New Testament prophets and their predictions. The second part of the book catalogues the many events of the Tribulation, starting with the coalition of invading forces that set themselves against Israel (Gog and his hordes) as well as the Rapture, while ending with the last rebellion against God and the subsequent Glorious Appearing of Christ. The third and final part of the book analyzes the personalities of the age - Satan, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, the Two Witnesses, and the Tribulation Saints and Martyrs.

Every student of end-times bible prophecy, whether a novice or the most seasoned of scholars, will find some merit in reading this book. Exciting and informative, it will open your eyes to the realities confronting our generation and present new and innovative ways of viewing God and the world in which we live. If seeing Israel in the news night after night has peaked your interest, read this book and learn more about why such events are not mere coincidence, but rather part of a divine plan that been unfolding for thousands of years.

A Guide to Buying Pet Products

Facts about pets

Australian families who share their homes with pets number among the highest in the world, with 64% of households including pets. In those 7.5 million households, fish top the pet population at over 12 million, followed by birds, at 9 million. At almost 4 million, there are more dogs than either boys or girls under the age of 14 years, and our domestic cat population is approximately two and a half million. If we group horse for pleasure riding, rodents, rabbits, snakes, lizards and others together, we can add another 2 million pets.

Pet Supplies Pet association has been shown to have enormous positive benefits on health and wellbeing of Australians. When you have a pet as a member of your family, you will visit the doctor less frequently and use less medication, have lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure, recover from illness and surgery more rapidly, deal with stress better and be less likely to feel lonely. All in all, it is estimated that pet association saves the Australian health budget almost S4 billion annually.

Around 90% of Australian familles with pets, consider those pets as fully integrated family members and the primary caregiver who assumes responsibility for the pet in the majority of situations is female. Not surprisingly, expenditure on pets, pet care and pet products in Australia is placed at more than $4 billion annually and provides employment for more than 40,000 people. Of this expenditure, two thirds (66%) is spent on dogs and one quarter (25%) is spent on cats. Dogs therefore get the greater amount of attention in pet world.

Care and grooming products

Caring for pets requires time and energy on the part of the caregiver. In today’s busy world, time is a commodity in shorter supply than perhaps it once was. There are a lot of products available to help reduce the amount of time needed for pet care. Search Myshopping.com.au for pet care products for your particular animal.

There are automatic feeding and watering products that mean your animal can access food and water when they need it and don’t have to depend on you being there to attend to it. Having water readily available for dogs and cats is important because they dehydrate more quickly than humans. Automated pet feeders not only reduce the chore of being there to provide meals for your pets, but add the convenience of timing food releases for animals that may be subject to particular dietary needs. Using an elevated pet feeder can aid your pet’s digestion because the pet doesn’t have to strain and bend over to access the food. Portable watering and feeding products are useful for those who take their pets with them at work or on the move, and include drinking pouches and feedbags for dogs and cats.

The need to groom your pet depends a lot on your living environment, and whether (or how much) your pet is an indoor or outdoor pet. Grooming could be a daily, weekly or occasionally scheduled activity, and is necessary to keep the animal’s coat healthy and to eradicate fleas and other parasites. It is also important to keep dander in check. Grooming products for pets include products for coat maintenance, nail clipping, dental care, bathing and beauty. There is a huge range of shampoos, face washes, and deodorisers and skin care products as well as styling tools and bows and ribbons for beautification. Grooming tools you may require could include a grooming table, heated blower-dryer, combs, rakes and brushes. As well as nail files and clippers.

Accommodation and transport products

As we cram ourselves into smaller and smaller living spaces, we have a need to accommodate our pets in the most comfortable manner. There is a huge range of bedding, mat and cushion products for dogs and cats, as well as cages and aquariums for birds and fish. (Aquariums are also available for hermit crabs and snails). Small ‘housing’ products such as indoor and outdoor kennels and sleeping tents and bags come in a variety of sizes and styles to suit all kinds of living environments. Rugs and shelters are also important for keeping your pets warm during cold weather, and insulated or shaded shelters are important during warmer weather. Pet that suffer from arthritis can benefit from pet warming pads, while animals that have motor disabilities can benefit from special ramps and steps that aid them in their mobility.

As a large proportion of pet owners like to travel with their pets in cars or on bicycles, there are a large number of travelling options, including specially designed car seats, harness and soft cages. Some car seats double as a travel suitcase to carry your pet’s travel needs or as a bed for a comfortable night’s sleep. For the cyclist, there is a range of pet bicycle baskets available with different safety and security features.

One of the reasons that pets help foster better health is due to the time we spend walking, running or playing with them. Searching Myshopping.com.au for leads and collars will yield a tremendous variety of products. Leads that you can belt around your waist give you ‘hands-free’ control of your dog while you walk or jog freely. Collars not only provide a way to carry your animal’s registration tags, but also provide a unique identity for your pet. If your pet is small or has a disability, you can get a pet stroller or a pocket pouch to walk or carry your pet.

Safe and secure enclosures can keep pets from wandering off, while giving them an outdoor experience. Safety pet fences or cat fences are wire mesh enclosures that can be used in backyards or on balconies to keep you pet safe while giving tem the ability to stretch in the fresh air. Portable soft pens, many of which can be coupled together to enclose a larger area, are ideal for containing a pet indoors or blocking off an entrance.

Safety products and toys

There are occasions when both pets and humans need to be kept safe from each other and from other dangers in the home and neighbourhood. These can include muzzles and safety restraints, as well as steps and life preservers to use in shimming pools and at beaches. The elderly pet may need special pet stairs or slings to help with mobility, or a brace that acts as a support crutch.

There is no shortage of toys for your pet available through Myshopping.com.au and may include scratching posts and tunnels for your cat; Frisbees, balls and bones for your dog, mirrors and balls for your birds, racing tracks for rodents. You can even find the more unusual toys along with training devices; clothing articles and pampering products here on Myshopping.com.au just click and search.

6 Ways To Uplift Your Spirits

Our journey to the lost destination is never a smooth ride to say the least. It could be a bad day at work, an argument with a friend, relationship problems … the list goes on.

Life smacks us hard when we least expect it. How well equipped are we to handle such incidents?

While we have friends and family to get us through these periods, it requires a fair amount of effort on our part as well. So what can you do ?

#1. Pamper yourself

Have you ever noticed that pampering yourself goes a long way towards making you feel good? For some people, its shopping, working on the car, playing the guitar, taking a long bubble bath, exercising, eating ice cream …..

What makes you feel comforted?

#2.Remember good times

When we go through a rough patch, it is the bad memories that keep hunting us. Take a stroll down memory lane (use a photo album if you have to!) and remember the good old days when life was less weary.

#3. There’s no point in asking your self ‘Why’

Have you been running round in circles in your mind, wondering why. Why Me, why , oh why. True, it’s hard not to.

I think only God has the answers to all why questions. In the meantime, you can ask a different question. What did I learn?

#4. Help someone

Happiness is a by product of an effort to make someone else happy.

Helping someone will make you feel needed. I’m sure whoever it is, will be appreciative of your effort. It will also help, to keep you occupied.

#5. Remember the less fortunate

A few months ago, I used to visit a neurology ward twice a day, everyday for nearly three weeks. Walking through the beds on either side made me feel very lucky. Mainly because, I was the visitor not the patient! Most of the patients warded, couldn’t walk and/or talk. Additionally, some even had eyesight problems.

Anyway, that was a couple of months back when my father underwent brain surgery. I still think about some patients, which I came to know during that period. I wonder what their fate is, at the moment.

Whenever I feel down, I do my best to recall my time at the ward. It reminds me that there are others, who are in a lot worse position, than I am.

#6 Tough times don’t last tough people do

Time heals all wounds is the popular advice. Have you ever felt like slapping anyone

who gave this advice? I’m sure they all mean well. Somehow, when we have sunk real deep, its difficult to come to terms that one day it will be alright . Even though at the time you don’t admit it or even consider the possibility, from life experiences I can say that it is true. I bet if you were to recap your past, you can too! One day at a time takes us to happy land , eventually.

Walleye Fishing Tips

Here is a simple walleye fishing tip that I use for one area of a lake I fish frequenly on Manitoulin Island and the lake is Mindemoya lake. This walleye fishing tip will work on most lakes of various sizes anywhere walleye are caught.

I have been catching walleye for over 50 years all across Canada. During that time I have learned a lot of things about fishing. But always remember that you can usually learn some new tricks and tips at any time.

Over the many years that I have fished this area I see so many anglers full of enthusiasm and expectations come and leave just frustrated with their experience fishing walleye. This fishing tip will help eliminate that frustration. It may not make you an expert, but it will make a difference in your fishing results.

Lake Mindemoya is not a large lake but to know where certain features of the lake are is great information to have. Depth, where to find shoals, sunken islands or structure that walleye love and frequent. My favorite spot on this lake is what is called Grassy Island and in the north west corner of the lake. It is actually what I call a sunken island because the only time it is actually visible from anywhere is in the summer when the reeds and grass are growing. In fact the hottest time of the summer is a great time for fishing walleye.

Now the first thing is of course is your rod and reel, sounds simple but be sure to use good fishing equipment. A light action graphite rod and reel with 6 or 8 pound test line is sufficient to catch and land most large walleyes.

The last thing is of course the simplest the hook. A plain unadorned ball-headed jig is king here. It is simple and easy to use, and deadly. Use 1/4 ounce as much as possible. If you have a problem finding the bottom you can move up to 3/8 ounce till you get used to finding the bottom.

These jigs have no action of their own, so that is up to the angler, short hops seem to work best but do not be afraid to experiment. Try to maintain contact with the bottom at all times, but try not to bounce on slack line. This can cause you to get snagged more often.

Jigs are great for catch and release, most of the time the walleye will be hooked in the top lip. Unhooking is fast and easy for you and the fish.

Tip jigs with either a minnow or a leech. I like to use leeches but at times minnows will work best. I usually carry both so I can test which is working best that day or for the area you are fishing.

Well now put this all together and lets catch those walleyes. Off the edge of this grassy island or sunken island as I call it there is a drop off and the walleye hold to this at different depths at different times of the day. Deeper during the heat of the day and closer in the evening.

The area I fish I am usually able to drift slowly over this reef from one end to the other and preset my jig and bait offering easily plus with great success. If you use electronics of any kind of course you can find these walleyes and where they are holding up. Also if it is too windy to drift the way you want a trolling motor can keep you in the thick of the action or even anchor.

Walleye do not like bright light and most anglers think that the best time for fishing walleye is early morning or in the evening and even after dark. But on Mindemoya Lake in the heat of summer you have an algae growth that clouds the water somewhat and makes for great fishing even in the heat of the day. As simple as this walleye fishing tip seems, remember it works and just experiment and you will succeed.

So to wrap this up if you ever get to my favorite place on earth, Manitoulin Island and happen to be near grassy island on Mindemoya Lake say hello to the oldtimer you see out there all alone in his Lund boat. Do not be afraid to ask questions, because he will have fish! Get out there and enjoy nature and relax!

The Smart Way To Buy A Vehicle

Believe it or not, it is a skill to buy the right vehicle, at a good or better price than what a particular vehicle is sold for in the market.

Before you do anything else, apply for a bank loan to purchase a new vehicle, find out what is your maximum loan amount your bank or any lender is willing to lend you. Once you know how much your loan approval is, then you are ready to start looking for the car you want.

Decide on the vehicle you will truly be happy or at the least very satisfied with, so that the notes will not feel painful. This is very important.

Will your next vehicle be a truck, a car, a SUV? Whichever type of vehicle you prefer start comparing different makes and models and get a general idea of what they are worth in the market. One easy way to do this is by visiting the Kelly Blue Book online at: kbb.com. Here you can check what the MSRP value is (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, is the price set by the manufacturer).

Once you have a check from your lender, that check will good as cash at the dealership. This will give you buying power. You will be able to get the best possible cash on a vehicle you really like.

As you shop around do not let car salesmen to intimidate you, remember, you have done your home work, you have research the market value for the car you want, you know a fair price down to the miles of it. Now you have a check in hand and can negotiate a cash deal. Make cash offers and see what reactions you get from salesman. Do not give any information to salesman.

Once you are down to a few dealers where you will buy your car from, go to each, or call each of them on the phone, work with the ones that have a decent sense of customer service and who are willing to work with you, and via telephone make a cash offer for one of the vehicle you are looking for. For instance, you have researched a vehicle that easily sells for $15K or $16K with less than 30K miles. Offer $12K cash and gauge each of their reactions and see what happens. It’s not for nothing that Cash still the reigning king!
