Creative Wedding Transport Solutions - Arrive And Leave In Style

Cars are likely to be the last thing on the minds of the busy, overwhelmed couple. However, family and attendants, some of your out-of-town guests, and most importantly, you and your significant other, will need some mode of transportation. Choosing your own escape mobile, like any other feature of your wedding, should balance and go with your sense of style as a couple.

In some places you can hire a horse-drawn carriage! Your carriage should be stylish and clean. You cannot go a long distance by carriage and not keep your guests waiting. Follow the coachman’s advice about touching the horses and feeding them delicacies at the wedding, and try not to spill drinks, either on his carriage or on your wedding dress, when the horses lurch to a start or stop.

Your transport has to be big enough to hold the often-voluminous attire of the bride without crowding. If you opt for a limousine service there are several things to remember as you shop around. Make sure to ask several questions when looking for a limo service. You may want to take cost into account and hire a service just for your specific needs, although almost all wedding limousine companies have packages ( www.southern-california-wedding.com/los%20angeles%20wedding%20limousine.shtml http://www.southern-california-wedding.com/los%20angeles%20wedding%20limousine.shtml ).

You don’t have to limit yourself to these two time-tested options. Why not rent a car or SUV limo if you have a large bridal party? Have a blast from the past and use a classic car. A hot-air balloon can be a fun way to arrive at your wedding reception. Arrive on horseback. A couple that enjoys golfing can arrive on a golf cart. Arrive on tractor for a country-themed wedding.

Companies across the US and Canada rent out luxury cars such as Mercedes, BMW’s, Lexus coupes and Saab convertibles. Matching mountain bikes, in-line skates and horses are other travel options. If you’ll be tying the knot in an unusual setting such as a deserted beach, a mountain, or a Venetian canal, nothing will complete the moment quite like the theatrical arrival by means of parasail, helicopter or man-powered gondola. However, if you have a large wedding party, and want them to arrive with you, you can’t beat a party limousine!

When it comes to choosing a mode of transportation, some brides make a few calls from the Yellow Pages and make their selection based on the lowest price. If you decide to go with the classic limo, or even a luxury rental, you should ask some questions: what types of vehicles the company offers, which car will you get on your wedding day, what color, what is the year and model of the car, additional fees, what if you need it longer than expected, etc.

Parenting Advice on Shopping with Children

Every parent knows that shopping with children can be very challenging. Tantrums can be excruciatingly plentiful in the shortest of shopping trips. However, parents can ensure a more peaceful supermarket excursion with the following guidelines.

1. If you’re planning to shop with your children, plan it ahead. Determine beforehand where you’ll be going and what you’ll be looking for. Inform your children the kind of shopping trip they can expect. But if your kid is not especially comfortable in supermarkets and tends to get cranky every three minutes, then it’s best to go shopping alone.

2. Shopping with your kids can be totally stressing. Before you go ahead with that shopping trip, be sure that you aren’t stressed out yourself, have eaten something and have the patience needed to survive the trip. Shopping with the kids is also easier if the children are well-rested and have been fed.

3. Shopping with children also mean that you have to be attentive to their needs. They might get hungry or thirsty so be sure to have a snack or drink on hand. Children may also be intimidated by the supermarket crowd and be overwhelmed by the surroundings, most especially when activity in the stores are hectic. Give them a reassuring hug once in a while.

4. Since children are innately curious beings, they might want to reach out for every colorful item that takes their fancy and play with it. Instead of scolding them, teach them how to hold it safely or inform them gently that they can only look at it and not touch it. While the item may not necessarily be part of your shopping list, it’s helpful to share in the child’s interest in it and explain what it is, what it is for and why it can’t go into the cart

5. If you’re shopping with pre-school children, get them involved in counting and choosing items. This will be a learning experience for them and would also keep their attention away from other unnecessary activities like reaching out for items you don’t have a need for.

6. When your children want something they can’t have, saying no without being subjected to temper tantrums can be mighty difficult. It might help to promise the kids that they can have it the next time you go shopping, but only when they promise to be good. When turning down your children, be sure to accompany the act with a smile and a hug.

7. If you have reached your limit, deal with your negative emotions positively. Go outside with your children, get refreshed and enjoy a few minutes of fresh air away from the shopping crowds. This will improve your shopping mood greatly.

8. If after all the well-meaning suggestions have been put to use and you still cannot stop your child from throwing tantrums, don’t force it. Postpone your shopping and tend to your child who might be feeling exhausted and just wants to go home. Pushing it would only lead to more stressful situations.

Shopping with children could be an unnerving experience. But by working their way around it and setting the pace appropriately, parents will find that even with the youngest child, shopping can be enjoyable. Plus, shopping is also a good opportunity for them to connect with their kids.

History of the Discotech - The Paris Connection

Until Nazi Germany’s brutal occupation, Paris nightclubs had been some of the top hosts of the American Jazz movement. Black American jazz musicians, artists and followers had discovered Paris after the Harlem Renaissance through the stories of black servicemen returning from WWI. These artists were grateful to the French for the opportunity, respect and pay equality that wouldn’t be seen in America until 40 years later.

The French, for their part, were obsessed with all things Negro due to the Primitivism movement in art and the spirit of Negritude . New forms of art were finally able to bloom under this broad acceptance and generous patronage. Paris served as a welcome home to many jazz luminaries..

With the rise Naziism throughout Europe, many Black expats returned home, anticipating better chances with the old Klan than with the new Reich. Notably, Josephine Baker and Thelonious The Nazis wasted no time shutting down their vibrant cabaret society and nightlife- jazz was the first target. As a collaboration of Black and Jewish musicians from America, jazz was anathema to Hitler’s vision of a Pure Society . Every revolution must have its soundtrack, and jazz soon became the theme music of the French Resistance.

New bars and clubs began to open underground - literally!. These late-night basement joints were run like the American speakeasy and included the use of passwords, memberships and revolving locations. The new form of nightclub was called discotheque , the French for record library . Live acts and known venues were too dangerous to chance, as today’s trespassing ticket was a one-way trip to the labour camps in 1941. The latest jazz records from the United States were eagerly awaited by this new underground.

The term discotheque soon grew to mean any type of nightclub that played recorded instead of live music. Virtually overnight, Le Discotheque opened on rue Huchette in 1941, an underground bar dedicated to jazz records. These early clubs served as refuge and solace for dusty Resistance fighters, sympathizers and dancers. They weren’t extravagant venues, but cozy hovels that served a stiff drink, good music and renegade opinion. In the daylight hours, the French experienced enough discomfort at the hands of Vichy collaborators and de Gaulle guerillas. The music was the only thing that stayed consistent, and the Underground clung to its identity

With the end of the occupation in 1944, jazz flowed once again, and the clubs became bigger, better and a bit snobbier (sound familiar?). The black expatriates returned in a second wave that would last through the sixties and incubate jazz for the coming birth of the Cool. In 1947, Paul Pacine’s passion for jazz records, the discotheque scene and American liquor came together to form the first real plush drum, the Whiskey au Go-Go. The Whiskey featured the latest in American jazz and spirits, which drew ever-larger crowds of dancers. The foundation for the animal called Disco was now complete.

America was just entering its Golden Age of Radio . Deejays until that time had primarily served in a commercial capacity as advertiser and news anchor. Deejays playing their own records between news, ads and soap operas established the deejay as music selector.

At the same time in the South, African-American laborers transformed the 1889 Edison Phonograph machine into the Jukebox, the first tool for the wide scale distribution and appropriation of independent black music. Juke is rural black vernacular for the possessed movement of the body as in dance or lovemaking (’jack your body,’?) After a long day of harassment and back breaking labor in the hot sun, that one record and a cold beer on a Saturday night could transform a simple machine into medicine. Because the proprietors of these Love Shacks owned the jukeboxes, both national and local records could be loaded as soon as they were pressed.

Due to the cultural mores of the time, black music was produced by specialized subsidiaries and labelled race records . Local music (most often blues) was produced a single at a time, and was often dependent on the ability to collect money from hobbled friends as well as finding a studio that would rent their facilities to blacks. White owned stations wouldn’t play even the most ethnically ambiguous records (even some Italians) until the 50’s, so the jukebox came into its own. The juke joint would establish the early tradition of the nightclub as the first place to hear new music in the African American community. This focus would allow disco music to develop from the discotheque itself in the years to come. —

Color Purple Tickets

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the musical, ‘The Color Purple’ is Winfrey’s first Broadway venture where she has contributed more than 1 million of the musical’s 10 million production cost. ‘The Color Purple musical’ is told through the eyes of Celie, a timid young Southern woman who is raped by her father, gives birth to two children and suffers years of cruelty married to an abusive man. During the trying times, Celie’s character develops from a homely teenager with a bruised heart to a self-confident woman in her late 50s.

The powerful presence of Oprah Winfrey’s name is great for the stage version of ‘The Color Purple’. Celebrity producers are rare on or off-Broadway and who can be bigger than Winfrey? With such a diverse national audience, Oprah can give the show a visibility that will hopefully translates into ticket sales. Her attachment gives out the message that Broadway is not an elitist art form but something everyone can embrace. Associated with ‘The Color Purple’ for eight years, Producer Scott Sanders received quite a jolt when he received Winfrey’s telephone call who wanted not only to help in marketing but to invest in the show, too.

Revised after receiving mixed reviews when it opened in Atlanta last year, it will be called “Oprah Winfrey Presents: ‘The Color Purple play.’ As Winfrey told the Times it was ‘a secret dream’ of hers to be part of Broadway. She wants to open the door to the possibilities for this production so that a world of people who have never been or even thought of going to a Broadway show would at least consider it. The same way she has done for books via her Oprah’s Book Club, which celebrates the joy of reading. Winfrey was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 1985 film version of ‘The Color Purple,’ directed by Steven Spielberg. It starred Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, Oprah Winfrey as Sofia and Danny Glover as Albert and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Walker’s book has been adapted by Marsha Norman, author of ‘night, Mother, while the score is by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. This Winfrey production is directed by Gary Griffin, a Chicago-based director best known for his small-scale productions of musicals such as ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Pacific Overtures.’ The choreographer is Donald Byrd. Quincy Jones, Scott Sanders and Roy Furman are the other producers besides Winfrey. Replacing actress LaChanze, Fantasia has taken over the role of Celie in the musical. She even performed ‘I’m Here’ from The Color Purple in a special appearance at the 61st Annual Tony Awards.

It is not just a musical to see, it is to be felt as it is brutally honest and all the actors do a commendable job to bring forward the emotions. Recently, The Color Purple on Broadway celebrated their one millionth audience member. Hopefully this extra-ordinary show will become another feather is Winfrey’s cap just as her own media including her popular syndicated TV talk show as well as her magazine O and Oprah’s Book Club.

Cellulite Treatment Options

We women are sick and tired of the dimples that seem to cling to our thighs; they’re not cute, happy dimples, but rather ugly “cottage cheesy” cellulite. We want beautiful, smooth legs that we can be proud to show off, and not feel that it’s necessary to wear shorts or a sarong over our bathing suits in order to protect spectators from such a dreadful sight. Unfortunately, there is no permanent cure for cellulite, but there are treatments available that may (and I do mean “may”) help some women get just a little bit of temporary improvement. Treatments for cellulite range from harmless and barely effective to potentially harmful with no proven effectiveness, but some are worth looking into.

What is Cellulite?

Believe it or not, the fat in cellulite is just plain old fat, the same as any other fat on your body. The term cellulite became popular in 1973 by an author and spa owner, and refers to the dimpled appearance of the skin seen in areas of the hips, thighs, and buttocks. As you may know, cellulite is more common in women because of the way a women’s body distributes fat. Experts estimate that about 85% of women develop cellulite. Because men have thicker skin, which is much better at hiding the fat beneath, it’s not likely that you’ll see a lot of men with cellulite.

Treatment Options

Cellulite is perfectly normal and isn’t a disease, therefore, there is no cure. There are, however, options available to reduce cellulite and its appearance. Sticking to a regular exercise routine, eating a healthy diet lower in calories and fat, and maintaining a healthy weight may work as a cellulite treatment for some people.

Losing weight will most definitely reduce the proportion of fat in your body, thus reducing the proportion of the fat that’s trapped in cellulite, but you may still notice some amount of cellulite on your trouble areas. This is due to the fact that the appearance of cellulite is genetically predetermined and in some cases diet and exercise don’t make a significant improvement.

Topical Creams

As you know, there is a number of creams available claiming to reduce and eliminate the appearance of cellulite. Generally, if a cream is to be effective the results are modest and usually not permanent, but some experts suggest if you’re determined to give the creams a try, it’s a good idea to look for those products that contain caffeine or theophylline. While some studies suggest that these ingredients may have an effect on cellulite and cause fat cells to dissolve, other studies disagree. Some experts even go so far as to say that applying a cream to your cellulite will not be effective since your skin was designed as a protective barrier - to keep things out. That being said, there are many people who have used cellulite creams and believe that they have seen results. If you want to try a cellulite cream, it’s strongly recommended that you purchase a less expensive cream, as usually the ingredients don’t differ from the more expensive brands.

Endermologie

A very well-know treatment for cellulite is Endermologie, a deep-massage, which uses a device that suctions the skin with a vacuum and kneads it with a set of rollers. Some studies have shown the deep-tissue massage can break up some of the fibrous bands, assist with circulation, and improve the appearance of the skin. While this treatment may work for some women, the effects don’t last and you’ll need regular maintenance treatments to keep the desired appearance.

Typically, Endermologie sessions can cost anywhere from $100 to several hundred dollars, and are performed weekly, usually taking about an hour per session.

Some people have seen excellent results with this treatment, but it can be costly, therefore, it’s best to go this route only if you have a significant amount of disposable income.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy, involves a series of injections into small pockets of cellulite. They contain a solution (a combination of homeopathic medications and supplements) that is supposed to break down fat and flush it away. While this treatment is widely accepted in Europe, it has not been scientifically studied in the United States and many experts are skeptical of its effectiveness.

Due to the lack of scientific proof, this treatment is not recommended, as the risk for side effects from several injections is certainly a possibility. Additionally, Mesotherapy can be quite expensive, with individual sessions costing perhaps hundreds of dollars.

Herbal Medicines

To date there has been no proof that any combination of herbs or vitamins is known to be effective in treating cellulite. If you’d like to attempt this treatment, however, it’s a good idea to check with your health care provider first, since it can cause dangerous interactions with other medications. Don’t let the term “natural” mislead you; even natural substances can be dangerous.

Liposuction

The average woman may think that liposuction is the perfect remedy for cellulite since what they’re trying to do is eliminate fat and that’s what liposuction does, right? Unfortunately, liposuction is designed to eliminate fat that’s deep beneath the skin. As you know, cellulite is nearly right at the surface of the skin. Additionally, it’s the fibrous bands that give cellulite its dimply appearance, so eliminating the fat alone won’t really give the results you’re looking for.

So what’s the Answer?

In the end, there’s not a whole lot of evidence to show that any treatment is effective in treating cellulite. If you’re at your wits end and are determined to do something, it’s best to experiment with a treatment that poses no health risks. Keep in mind, however, that the results will likely be modest and you shouldn’t invest too much money - at least until a treatment is developed whose results are proven effective.

My advice is to do the best you can with diet and exercise - and creams if you choose - but the next time you get really discouraged, pick up a tabloid magazine and take a look at some of the photos of the “perfect” and “beautiful” celebrities; they have cellulite too, and they also have endless amounts of cash. If even the richest women in the world are dealing with cellulite there’s a good chance we average women will have to accept it (at least some amount of cellulite) too.

Kids And Energy

I’m not sure why, maybe because it’s summer, I’m getting a lot of questions and stories about kids and energy. I’ll put them all under that broad category but there have been several different subcategories discussed: kids and ADHD, kids and anger management, and kids and computers.

Kids and ADHD

Let’s start with kids and ADHD. There seems to be a big trend here in the US of drugging our children so they can “control” their behavior in school. I am NOT in favor of this practice.

Why is there such an epidemic of ADHD diagnoses in our children? I don’t want to oversimplify but I believe one reason is that our children don’t have the opportunities they had in previous generations to run around and expend their energy.

In years past, kids got to play in the parks, in the streets and in their own yards. Today, that happens less and less. Parents are too afraid to allow their children to be outside unsupervised, and rightly so! There are predators out there who would do your children harm. However, kids still need to expend their energy, somehow.

So, many times the activities available to them at home are sedentary, such as playing video games, watching television, talking on their cell phones or using the home computer. None of this provides opportunity to release energy, unless your children are like my niece who paces vigorously while talking on the phone.

Then we send them to school and expect them to sit down and be quiet. In addition, many schools are reducing the amount of physical education time for our kids and I’ve even seen recently that some schools forbid children to run at recess or use certain playground equipment because they fear of physical injury lawsuit. Is it any wonder our children are having difficulty?

Now I know there are parents and teachers out there who have stories of children who have been helped immensely by the addition of Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta or Dexedrine to their daily diet. If you know a child who is being helped by his or her medication, I’m not saying to discontinue it but for every child who is being helped, I believe there are at least three others who are still exhibiting all the ADHD behavior the medication was designed to reduce.

There have been studies done on placebo medications that show that in double blind studies, when neither the patient nor the doctor knew whether the patient was getting the actual drug or the placebo, the ones getting the placebo actually did better. Is it possible there is a placebo effect with some children?

If your child displays what you or the teachers believe is an excessive amount of energy, do your best to create situations where that child can expend energy. I have two boys who could both have been diagnosed with ADHD as children. They were very physical. Luckily, I lived in the country during a time when parents sent their kids out the door to simply “play.” I also spent a lot of my spare time running them around to different athletic events-YMCA soccer, wrestling, flag football, T-ball, basketball, you get the idea. This definitely helps.

Kids and Anger Management

I spoke with a woman over the weekend whose son is 10 years-old and she says has anger management issues. We didn’t really get into his specific behaviors but it caused me to reflect on some inherent differences between males and females.

I think that from very early on, boys and girls deal with their anger differently. As a general rule, girls need to talk about it to feel better, while boys need to work it out physically.

So if you have daughters, you want to teach them verbal skills to be able to work out their frustrations but with boys, you will need to provide opportunities for them to work out their anger physically-maybe with a punching bag, racquetball, running, or martial arts. The list of possibilities is truly endless but don’t expect your boys to “talk about it,” at least not until they’ve had the opportunity to release the anger in a safe physical manner.

Kids and Computers

This week, a mother contacted me about her child disobeying her limits with the home computer and sneaking time beyond her allowed limit.

In this situation, the mother had a need to protect and nurture her child. She wants to be able to loosely supervise her daughter’s time on the computer to possibly prevent her from falling prey to adults who victimize children by finding their victims on the Internet. She also wants to support her child’s need for physical activity so she restricts her computer usage and encourage outside physical activities instead. Is this mother wrong? Absolutely not.

Her daughter, on the other hand, has a desire to be on the computer. All her friends are on there and want to know why she isn’t. They don’t have limits while this girl does. This girl is quite accomplished on the computer and can build website pages for her friends. She also has a high need for freedom and doesn’t like being restricted and the computer is plain fun to her. She gets her love & belonging, power, freedom and fun needs met with the computer. Is she wrong? Absolutely not.

How does it get resolved? I think the way to resolve this issue is for the mother and daughter to sit down and talk about what each other needs and wants in the situation. If the child can convince her mother that she has the skills and knowledge necessary to protect herself from predators and she agrees to engage in other healthy activities each day, then her mother could relax her restriction on the amount of time she has on the computer.

In this case, and many others like it, the daughter wouldn’t be able to meet her freedom need with the computer if there wasn’t a rule to break. Sometimes we create the very behavior we are trying to stop with the rules we make. When a person has a high need for freedom, they will inevitably break the rules, particularly the ones they don’t like or that don’t make sense.

Parenting is one of the hardest jobs you’ll ever do and the stakes are incredibly high. We all do the best we can and hope for good results. Fortunately, when we have good intentions are kids generally survive in even thrive.

Natural Health for Pets: Nutrition for Dogs, Cats and Birds

Pet Health

Pets today suffer from allergies, skin problems, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, liver and kidney failure, and other serious illnesses. These conditions have been exacerbated by the tainted foods we feed our pets, and the lack of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other nutrients in their diets. Commercial grade pet foods may contain harmful additives and processed grains, instead of high quality proteins. These foods weaken the immune system, providing the environment for disease to gain a foothold.

Improving your pet’s health is relatively simple. It is a matter of feeding your pets natural, whole foods, and ensuring a proper balance of vitamins, minerals and micronutrients is achieved. I recommend the following basic diets for dogs and cats, try them and watch your best friend grow healthier and happier before your very eyes!

All animals

If you have the means to feed your pets organic foods and filtered water, please do so! Organic vegetables can be grown cheaply and with little effort in your own garden, and I’m sure there’s a GSW Class on how to do it, as well as the GSW Gardening Club.

The easiest way to prepare vegetables is to use the pulp left over from juicing. I like my carrot, apple, beetroot and celery juice in the mornings, and there are plenty of nutrients left in the pulp to keep the dog and the birds healthy as well! If you don’t drink juices (you should, they’re great for you!), you’ll need to use a food processor, as they should be chopped up quite finely.

For meat-eating pets, try to get game meats, as they are generally leaner and free of all the hormones and antibiotics that are present in commercially grown meats. Also keep in mind that diced meat is better than minced. Here in Australia, many pet shops sell frozen diced kangaroo meat in 1kg packs (and 15kg boxes) at very reasonable prices.

Always add a good colloidal or crystalloid vitamin and mineral supplement and some high-grade Omega 3 and 6 oils.

Aged garlic extract, various herbs, enzymes, spirulina, bee pollen and kelp can also be added either on a regular basis or as needed, to ensure the highest level of well-being for your pet.

Dogs

Mix 1/3 raw vegetables (any except onions, which can be toxic to dogs), 1/3 cooked grains (white rice or pasta are acceptable, but whole grains or brown rice are preferable), and 1/3 raw meat. Add a splash of oil and serve - it’s that simple!

* Note that measurements are given as proportions rather than amounts, as serving sizes will vary considerably depending on the size of your dog.

Raw bones are also recommended once a day, especially marrowbone or kangaroo tails.

Cats

Unlike dogs, cats are almost exclusively carnivorous, and will do well on a meat-only diet. Give your cat raw meat, fish (whitebait is the perfect size for cats, and very inexpensive), or organic chicken. Feed in small portions twice a day, and remember to remove uneaten food before it spoils.

When allowed to go outside, cats will normally supplement this diet with herbs and grasses, which, apart from self-medicating, also supply nutrients that are not present in meat, such as chlorophyll. Therefore, it is especially important to supplement the diet of indoor cats who are not permitted to go outside with a good vitamin-mineral supplement.

Birds

Birds should always have a good mix of different grains and seeds as well as fresh water available. I also recommend giving birds some raw fruit and vegetables daily. It’s nice if you can give them some access to fresh grasses as well.

Some birds, especially parrots, will happily eat a whole apple or another fruit if you just cut it in half. Others need the fruit and veg to be chopped or pureed on the food processor. Be guided by what your birds like, but please, stick to foods that are naturally eaten by your species of bird!

Never give your chickens “layer pellets” as they are made with fish and meat meal - that is, ground up fish, cow and chicken bones - about as far from a natural diet as a chicken can get! Chickens’ diet should consist mainly of wheat, other grains and seeds, fruit and vegetables, grasses, any insects and worms they can capture. Look for “wild bird seed” in your supermarket - it’s great to mix in with their wheat and they love it! If you are able to let them out, even if for only a few hours a day, then do so! They will always return to their “coop” by sundown.

What now?

Whether your pet is healthy or has a health problem, try the natural diet recommended above first. Most animals will get better within a few weeks and will not need futher treatment. If problems persist, you can send me your questions and I will email you back (I try to respond to all emails) and also publish your question and my answer in the next article.
