Restaurants Start-Up and Systems Success

If you have a restaurant business or are planning on starting a restaurant business then there are several things you will need to do. Find the right products and supplies to start your organization. hiring the right staff, having a menu that is attractive to local consumers, and above all having the right location with the right atmosphere. Some good principles to follow when doing this is develop a business start-up strategy covering the above areas.

In starting a restaurant you may want to consider restaurants that are for sale, but be wary of the cost of leasing and the condition of the current business infrastructure and services to the building. You want to be able to start a restaurant with a minimum number of headaches when it comes to bills in the first few months. What is most important is generating the volume of customers you need and having a suitable systems and staffing operation to carry through on your potential successes.

Having worked under a successful chef in a French Bistro in the past, who ended up selling his business in a matter of years, over 20 years ago and helping some other owners become successful in expanding their customer base I can give you a few pointers.

1. Location of the Restaurant- This is key to the future of your business, the location must be suitable to traffic, if it is not then you better have a … good reason for people to get to your location that no one else has. Traffic by foot and by cars as well as other means is important. Determining the traffic numbers in both these areas as others is very important for future business reasons.

2. Finding the Right Supplies for your Restaurant- There are so many suppliers in the restaurant industry and there are also numerous brokers, repairmen and resellers. You must tread carefully and do your homework, determine the benefits of the purchase and the costs. It could be as simple as drawing a line down the paper and including positive and negatives or doing a more involved cost benefit analysis. Also having an accountant review the opportunity would be beneficial in saving you problems down the road.

An example of a restaurant management supplier is: www.sodexho.com/food-management-services/restaurant-supply-wholesale.htm http://www.sodexho.com/food-management-services/restaurant-supply-wholesale.htm

3. Menu- One of the most important things may be the menu, especially in a larger city where there is more competition. You must adhere strictly to a defined menu that accentuates you and word of mouth about the best food you have in your chosen specialty. Size of the menu is also important in consideration of your costs and the types of foods you want to serve and or mix using basic ingredients. The opportunity to have prepared food is also available in assisting you with labour costs in preparing food.

An example for cost effective menu making online is: www.themenumaker.com/ http://www.themenumaker.com/

4. Staffing- Staffing can be challenging, and in this industry, like other industries that can be entry-level at times it may be hard to find workers with dedication, principle and good ethics. Developing a good job description including duties and expectations and having a training day and or someone to assist them in job shadowing is beneficial. There are numerous other opportunities that you can use in developing HR Strategy. A good business example of HR Strategy in business would be IBM. In the restaurant industry you might look to good examples such as McDonald’s, Starbucks or A&W. You might not have the leverage they have to offer some of the services of strategies but there are opportunities to offer similar environments. This however, takes a lot of time and work and having a hr consultant or business consultant would be beneficial. Having team uniforms may be one way to identify with your customers and may also benefit your staff’s hygiene. A good example is: www.bestbuyuniforms.com/ http://www.bestbuyuniforms.com/

5. Layout, Design and Attraction- This can make or break some businesses in the restaurant industry depending on their competition and consumer demand. Some areas expect a certain level of quality in service or food or variety in food selection. Other areas demand a layout that is unique and appealing or beneficial for movement. There are many options and completing a little research, getting feedback from other developers and restaurants.

A good book to read on restaurant design is: www.successfulrestaurantdesign.com/ http://www.successfulrestaurantdesign.com/

6. Business Systems- There are numerous business systems available in the restaurant industry such as Squirrel, Microsoft etc. For more information on some of the current advanced portable systems see: www.actionsystems.com/ http://www.actionsystems.com/

How Nearly Finished Got Lucky

Lying next to Richard Branson is terrific. There’s a buzz. Everyone wants to touch you. “”Wow”, people gasp, “you and Richard Branson. Amazing. Who would have thought of the two of you together - you from Cape Town and Mr B, the global entrepreneur”.

Indeed. Before you get too excited, let me explain. I am talking about my little book, Nearly Finished - a guide to home renovation (Double Storey, $16) which for a few weeks, lay on the shelf (see, I told you not to get excited) next to Mr. Branson’s bestselling little book, called, Screw It, Let’s Do It (Virgin Books, $5.80).

Our books nestled side-by-side at my local book shop in a section where they place the ten top selling titles of the week. The list is for that store only. Sure, it is not the national hit parade or The New York Times Best Selling list, but it was a huge rush for yours truly. To bask in the afterglow of Mr Branson’s fame was lovely.

Nearly Finished is based on articles I was commissioned to write for the Cape Times on the renovation of our house. South African publishers, Double Storey approached me and invited me to develop the newspaper series into a book.

When Nearly Finished was released, we were on holiday. On our return, we found that the little bookie was at no 9 at the bookshop. Thrilling. It soon moved to number four. Mr B was at no 3. Major thrills. Armed with a skinny cappuccino, I sat in the coffee shop adjoining the book shop, monitoring the action and smoozing potential buyers: “Hey, why are you not buying my book?! I’ll even sign it for you”.

A fascinating pattern emerged. People began picking up Mr Branson’s Screw it, Let’s Do It and then reached for Nearly Finished. Or the other way round. I was chuffed. I am still a virgin with this literary gig, so when I see someone buying my book, I can’t control myself: “Omigod - you’re buying my book”, I squealed to a nice man. “Well, since I am with the subject of screwing, I thought I’d buy Nearly Finished as well. Aren’t they about the same thing?”, he answered.

Hmm. Consider a review on Amazon for Screw it: ” …Screw It, Let’s Do It reveals the lessons that have helped him through his business and personal life, like believing it can be done and that, if others disagree with you, try and try again until you achieve your goal or that you must love what you do.”

Exactly. In Nearly Finished, we reveal the lessons that helped us through the renovating process and our utter belief that it could be accomplished, even when others disagreed with us; when they said that it couldn’t be done; we persevered. When they said that we would fail if we sub-contracted and worked without a project manager or fancy designer, we said, ’screw it - let’s do it’. Our philosophy is that anyone can build or renovate. Our mission: to demystify building. Get a handful of three inch screws and pay someone else to get on with your job. Love your home. Enjoy it.

With property values rocketing globally and living spaces shrinking - we are after the same thing. As homeowners who live in Cape Town, New York, London or Shanghai, we want to make the most of our homes, maybe buff them up a little bit or a lot. Ultimately, we all want to finish.

Although Nearly Finished is a story about one family’s experience of building in Cape Town (that’s us) and is not meant to be an A-Z of building, it does contain universal reference points and tips about the building process; what can go wrong and what to look out for. It is full of lessons we can draw from wherever we are in the global village - to help us take our homes from “need some work” to “simply stunning”

Putting Together the Perfect Halloween Costume

If you’re going to a costume party or some other event for Halloween, you probably want to really impress everyone with your costume. And the best type of costume is one that will really let you get into character - something that you feel proud to be wearing.

You can put together your own costume or buy one of the cheap ones that you’ll find at your local drug store, but to really go the distance and get a great costume it pays to get it through a professional costume store. Whether you rent it or buy it, you’ll be a lot happier with the results.

A good costume store won’t try to sell you more than you need. They’ll help you to find a costume that suits both your needs and your budget. They’ll also make sure you’re familiar with how to don the costume, and any other accessories or makeup that goes along with it.

To really make a splash at the costume party, you want to go all the way with your costume. Don’t cut corners and try to save a few dollars by going with something cheaper or not as complete.

Get all the accessories you’ll need - makeup, props, a quality mask, etc. Having the complete package will make your costume that much more realistic (and will make it that much harder for your friends to recognize who you really are!)

If you’re not sure exactly what accessories you’ll need, do a little research. Are you thinking of going as an elf from The Lord of the Rings? Watch the movies again to pick up all the details in the costumes.

Or perhaps you want to be a pirate this year? The Pirates of the Caribbean movies can give you a ton of good ideas for your costume.

Take the time to get all the details just right and you’ll be the talk of the party - even if nobody knows who you really are!

Monty Smith writes about Halloween costumes and other Halloween-related topics for the Best Costumez website. Get more Halloween tips at www.bestcostumez.com http://www.bestcostumez.com .

Do Away with Financial Emergencies- Avail Payday Advance Loan

Life is never smooth. You can face a financial emergency anytime anywhere. To cope up with these unexpected situations, you should have a solution beforehand. But if you do not have a solution just ask for payday advance loans which will provide you with quick and fast money to deal with urgent cash need.

Payday advance loans are basically short term loans which offer you loans to meet your unexpected financial emergency. With these loans you can easily pay unexpected medical bills, electricity bills, or any other expense for which you cannot wait.

Payday advance loans are called so because they are offered against a post dated check paid in advance to the lender. This check has the amount which you will be paying when the loan term ends. The check also serves as collateral against the loan amount. When the repayment date comes, the lender automatically gets the required amount by depositing this check in the bank.

With a payday advance loan you can get a loan amount ranging from £200-£1,500. The repayment term is usually between 1 week and a month. Interest rates usually depend on the amount you take and on the repayment term.

A payday advance loan is offered mainly through online lending as such a speed cannot be offered by regular offline lenders. All you need to first of all select a suitable lender according to your requirements. Once you find the appropriate lender, the rest of the work becomes quite easy. The next step will be to fill an online application form which will require some details about your employment, income, identity, residential proof etc. After you submit the form, the loan will be quickly transferred into your bank account.

In order to get a payday advance loan, you need to fulfill certain conditions. They are:

-You should be a UK citizen with above 18 years of age.
-You should be a regular employee of a company
-Your minimum salary should be £1,000 per month.
-You should have a UK bank account

If you feel you fulfill all these conditions you can easily apply and avail payday advance loans.

You need not worry at all if you have a bad credit history. You can avail payday advance loans even if you have a credit record of arrears, defaults, bankruptcy, CCJ, late payments etc. Since these loans are made available in such a short time that there is no scope to run a credit check. Hence these loans are available to all types of credit holders.

So the next time to face an emergency, go straight to payday advance loan and get a quick and convenient solution.

Payday Loans - What You Must Know!

Sometimes when things become a little tough, we do things without too much thought. Usually because we want to put the tough thing behind us and move on. This can result in jumping in on payday loans and regretting it later. Payday loans aren’t all that evil as long as you know what you’re getting into and you take some time thinking about actually doing it and how you’ll later terminate the loan.

To begin with, payday loans aren’t always a good choice! Don’t get tricked by the ads from the mall, radio, television or Internet. Even if you desperately need some cash until your payday, you should consider all the alternatives first. In my opinion, a brief definition for payday loans is expensive cash.

Payday loans are short-term cash loans. The amount of money that can be borrowed regularly ranges from $100 to $1,000, and it depends on the laws of each state. The average term is about two weeks. Payday loans are made by check cashers, finance companies, payday loan stores, and others. They are also designated as cash advance loans, check advance loans, deferred deposit check loans or post-dated check loans.

This is how it usually works: the borrower writes a personal check for the sum borrowed plus a fee and he receives the amount he or she wishes minus the fee. Fees are regularly a percentage of the value of the check, but they can also be a fixed value charged per a specific amount (like $15 for each $100 borrowed). When the next payday comes, the borrower can redeem the check for cash. Otherwise, he can pay the finance charge again and roll the loan for another two weeks.

To get an idea of how expensive payday loans are, you must know that this type of loan costs on average 470% APR (annual interest), while the APR a credit card is rarely higher than 60%.

Let’s assume you want to make a payday loan for the amount of $300, the loan fee is of $17.50 per $100, and the loan term is 14 days. Therefore, in order to redeem the check you have to pay $352.50 when the 14 day period is over. You can pay it by cash or you can allow the check to be deposited at the back. If you still don’t have this money, you must pay the fee of $52.50 to renew the loan for another loan period. This means that borrowing $300 for a month will cost you $105. That’s not cheap at all! By comparison, a $300 cash advance on an average credit card, repaid in one month, would not cost you more than $15.

All you need to get a payday loan is an open bank account and a steady source of income. However, lenders are not necessarily interested to find out if the borrower can afford to repay the loan. If you don’t pay the loan, it becomes an uncovered check in your bank account. If you fail to repay it, you will get a bounced check fee from the lender and from the bank. You will receive negative ratings on specialized databases and because of this you might lose your bank account and have difficulty in opening a new one.

Because of the very high cost to borrow and the short repayment terms, the consumers sometimes tend to be trapped in repeat borrowing cycles. Reports show that almost 60% of all loans made every day are either loan renewals, or loans taken out by the same consumer immediately after paying off the last one.

Payday loans with three-digit interest rate are prohibited in twelve states in the USA, where they are considered to be small loans or usury caps.

The internet payday lending has become very popular lately. You can apply online and loans are directly deposited into your bank account. When the payday comes, the amount of money you’ve borrowed is electronically withdrawn. If you choose to renew the payday loan, the finance charge is electronically withdrawn from your account.

Here is a suggestion in order to avoid getting a payday loan. First of all, shop carefully! If you really need that money, try to get an advance on pay from your employer or borrow the money from family or friends, at least you can do this for free (usually). Figure your daily and monthly expenditures, and try to avoid unnecessary purchases. You should also build some saving, so that there will be no need to borrow money for unexpected expenses or emergencies. If you still decide you want to use a payday loan, make sure you don’t borrow more than you can pay with your next paycheck.

7 Reasons to Adopt a Child

Seven Things You Need to Adopt a Child

(1) The desire to have a child - whether it is your first child or your sixth. Having a child is the most difficult job you will ever have but is also the most rewarding. This child will probably not appreciate all that you went through to adopt him/her until adulthood, but realize that biological children won’t either!

(2) Which country do you wish to adopt from? Countries (even the USA) vary in their wait times, costs, availability of certain sex & age of child, etc. Do your research and then go where your heart leads you.

(3) Talk to adoptive parents. Find local support groups or message boards on the internet. (Example: Russianadoption@yahoo.com Russianadoption@yahoo.com ) Ask questions. Adoptive parents love to talk about their adoption journey.

(4) Read current books and articles. But, beware! Newspapers love articles that grab the reader’s attention! This usually means a negative story on adoption gone wrong! Please realize that for every bad story there are hundreds of happy stories….but happy stories don’t sell papers.

(5) The money…sigh! Know that you will need at least $15,000 for one adoption. You will be eligible for a $10,000 tax credit, but not until after the adoption is complete. If you don’t have much money saved up, don’t give up hope. Studies show that most adoptive parents are not in the wealthy bracket. Most are average income earners and many are just big-hearted families with lots of love but not much money. Again…the internet is loaded with grant programs and loan ideas of adoption. If you are motivated, you will find a way. If you needed a new car or appliance you’d find a way to finance one. The life of a child is much more fulfilling in the grand scheme of things.

(6) The paperwork…ugh! There will be stacks of papers needing to be signed and notarized. (Find a notary early on that you like to work with!) Some papers will seem ridiculous to you and many people will question your sanity as you blindly fill them out over and over! You will learn quickly that you will do what is asked for to help your child. It is all worth it in the end. Think of the paperwork as labor pains…it will end and there will be a child at the end of it all!

(7) Faith! The most important thing you’ll need is faith…and lots of it. Faith you’ll find the money. Faith that the right child is matched to you. Faith in a foreign country where you are the foreigner and that you must do whatever is asked of you. Many times it will be blind faith leading you to your child. But when they give that child to you and you kiss his little face, you will see the power of adoption and the choices you made creating a future for this little person, who until you came, had none. And months later when he is calling Mama and Papa and rolling in laughter on your living room floor you will know you were given the best gift in the world. A child that loves you!

Deborah Mumm is the parent of 3 biological sons and 2 children adopted from Russia. She runs an adoption support group in her area and gives talks to teachers and students on Adoption. You can find information on Adoption at www.everythingforadoption.com http://www.everythingforadoption.com

Christmas Presents for Pooches

Dogs are mans best friend, and as any dog owner will tell you, they really do become part of the family. This is probably why we can’t leave the family dog out of the festivities at Christmas time. There are many of products on the market for dogs from doggie treat Christmas stockings, to Christmas theme food dishes, to Santa costumes to dress your dog up! Santa wrote a particular request asking people not to buy rubber Santa chew toys, because on Christmas eve when Santa is delivering presents, many dogs are looking a little too pleased to see him.

Why not take the time to make your best friend and extra special gift this Christmas, a Christmas sleigh bell dog collar.

All you need is…
A dog collar, bells, felt and glue.

The dog collar needs to be a fabric or woven type collar that can be stitched into. Choose a nice festive colour like red.

You can buy bells from craft shops or your local haberdashery. The larger the bell the more ‘Sleigh bell’ the ring of the bell will sound, and your pooch will sound like a reindeer prancing along. Small bells have a high pitch ring, ideal for small or lady like dogs, the delicate tinkle makes them sound like small Tinkerbell the fairy.

Adjust the collar to fit your dog comfortably.

Sew bells at regular intervals around one edge (the bottom edge). About 4 CMS is a good gap between bells.

If you are using small bells sew them on in clusters of two or three larger bells can be sewn on singularly.

The bells need sewing on firmly so that they don’t come off. Your dog may try to eat them.

Cut out holly leaf shapes and berries from some felt and glue them into place between the bells. You could substitute the holly leaves for fabric Christmas tree bows for lady dogs.

A cute Christmas collar gift for your dog, which will make your pooch jingle festively on every walkies!

Do not leave the dog wearing the collar unattended.

8 Keys to Lasting Love

My granddaughter, Merritt Miles, at five years old, was the inspiration for, 8 Keys to Lasting Love. While reading her a fairy tale I was very disturbed by what I was about to say to her when I read; And they lived happily ever after.

So, I took the liberty of changing the ending to, They began the work of creating a very good marriage. I didn’t want Merritt thinking, as so many of my clients had, that marriage was so simple, that it just magically happened and couples lived happily every after.

As a marriage and family therapist for thirty years, I have seen the pain people experience after the honeymoon is over, when they awaken realizing they have married a mere mortal. I hope my granddaughter, as she enters adulthood, will avoid the pitfalls and pain of those who succumb to this happily ever after myth.

1. Stop blaming. Start living. It is our responsibility, and not our partner’s, to feel better and to heal. Our partner will be responsible to us, but not for us. So it’s useful, instead of blaming our partner, to ask ourselves these two questions, Why did I draw this person into my life?” and “What is it that I need to learn from this?” Within a good marriage, we grow up.

2. Avoid the fixer-upper syndrome. We think we can fix our partner and shape them into perfection. Our version of perfection. So many people marry for potential. Never marry potential. Marry for safety, the safety between two people who accept one another faults and all.

3. Make a promise to keep our integrity. Do not hold onto victim hood like a prize. This doesn’t allow us to grow. Work on behaviors that make our partner want to change by being kind and loving. Vent our feelings, without being out of control. If we are in a relationship that does not have mutual respect, over time we may need professional help. Preferably, we would seek that help with our partner.

4. Eliminate attack thoughts. These types of thoughts are incredibly destructive over time. If we attack other people, ourselves and our thoughts, it really interferes with our happiness and peace of mind.

Learn to find the joy, even in difficult times. As Mother Theresa once said, Our best protection is a joyful heart.

5. Do not hold onto anger. Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting someone else to die. Turn attack thoughts into constructive thoughts and actions. Think thoughts that are appreciative of ourselves and our partner. And express those thoughts often. When we build an emotional bank account full of positive thoughts, we have positive emotional currency to counter with when angry times come.

6. Wake up, without makeup. On soap operas I’ve seen women wake up first thing in the morning with all their makeup on, false eyelashes and all. That is not the real world. What we need to do for a successful marriage is to learn to be more and more real. What we need to do for a successful marriage is learn to feel more and more safe to be who we truly are.

7. Wake up and make up. It is essential that couples learn to repair and heal after every fight. Find solutions. Do not get stuck rehashing the past. Live in the present, and find ways to keep the marriage buoyant and alive. Happy couples learn how to repair differences.

8. To change our relationship, the place to start is with changing ourselves first. Better to reinvent ourselves, because we are not going to be able to change our partner. Learn to love in a mature way without trying to control or manipulate. C.S. Lewis once said, To love without control or manipulation is to be surprised by joy. We will truly be surprised by joy when we can live in the moment with our partner. And within ourselves.

How To Maintain Your Privacy With Your Russian Wife

My recommendation is that you keep all of your personal correspondence and other personal files off your home computer. If you keep your stock portfolio or other financial information on it, it’s going to fall into the hands of the KGB.

I recommend that you get ‘content sniffer’ software that scrubs your home computer of all potential objectionable files. Imagine that your computer is going to be sitting at the public library for anyone to look through. That’s the level at which you should maintain your home computer.

One great company that has a lot of products that provide privacy on the Internet is the Anonymizer Group of products.

Personally I recommend their Anonymizer ID Protection Suite with Window Washer. This allows you anonymous searching on the web plus the ability to clean your computer of objectionable files. You can order it at the above website.

If you need to keep personal financial files or other personal correspondence confidential, put them on a portable computer, using encryption software like PGP, and keep it locked in your office.

All confidential hardcopy files should be kept in a locked safe off premises. All legal documents should be kept at your attorney’s office. Purge your house of old girlfriend’s photographs and their personal articles.

If this sounds like you are acting like a secret agent you are correct. Whether you act like one or not, your wife will be acting like one.

Have fun with it. Imagine that you are James Bond and you don’t want to leave any incriminating information left around. Get rid of anything that ties you to your prior married or bachelor life, especially as it relates to women.

You are now a Stepford husband. You have not had any experiences with women prior to meeting your wife. You spent your entire life previous to meeting your wife in a monastery. You must deny any knowledge of your prior existence.

Remember, any information, can and will be used against you !

Get rid of all the catalogs and videos from the Russian tour companies. Get rid of your ‘tool girl’ calendars and your vintage copies of Playboy from the ‘good years.’

Lock up your guns in a gun safe that’s kept in the garage. Get rid of the ones that aren’t legal.

The only videos you should have are action movies rated PG or less. The only cable subscriptions you should have are sports or regular movie channels. Don’t order anything objectionable through pay per view or at the video store.

Your house should resemble Mr. Roger’s Playhouse. You should be able to operate a Church school there after you ‘disinfect it.’

Actually, since the new security measures have passed Congress, it’s probably a good idea to maintain this level of personal privacy anyway.

Between your personal domestic KGB agent and the FBI scanning your emails and your Internet surfing, monitoring your correspondence and television watching, you are just like that Jim Carrey movie character that was under surveillance all the time, but didn’t know it.

Well, now you know it.

The only thing she can’t monitor are your thoughts. But she’ll try. That comes later.

John Kunkle has been successfully married to a Belarussian wife for over five years. He has traveled extensively through Russia and other CIS countries. He will tell you why you should consider Russian women, how to meet them, how to bring your special woman home, and how to survive married life.
