German shepherds and other such dogs can be seen helping police forces in tracking down runaways. Some of them are used as the normal patrolling dogs. They give duties along with the police at night when they are giving duties at highways and roads etc. Then others are trained for many years to identify narcotics and detect bombs that may be installed in hidden areas. They have been known for capturing felony criminals and drug dealers etc since decades. That is why they are so reliable.

Police dogs are a great blessing because they are able to use their sense of smell and hearing that is much more powerful than human senses. What they simply do is they make the dogs inhale a scent of either a man or drugs whatever that has to be tracked down. Then the dogs are unleashed and they go off on their trail. And soon enough these criminals are tracked down easily. They make the police jobs and their investigations a lot easier than they actually are.

The FBI rely 50 percent on their dogs during investigations. There are fire dogs that help fire fighters with their jobs. They do not hesitate from jumping into a burning building and look for survivors. And they tend to reach places man cannot even think of reaching.

These dogs are able to work for hours and hours without rest and they dutifully defend the borders with the police throughout the year, in every sort of weather without complaining.

Foster parenting is certainly not for everyone. It requires a special gift - a gift of a true love for children, a gift of patience, and a gift of being an outstanding parent. Not all people realize that and that is why one often hears stories of people who abused their foster children. A child in this condition needs full time support with a family that will love them and make them feel needed.

One of the greatest accomplishments that a family can achieve is taking an out of luck child, turn around the life of that child, and make the kid a contributing and solid member of society. That is a great gift if it can happen with a family. Our busy lives rarely leave time or energy to spend on the special needs of someone who is not our natural born child.

A method of self-protection for many foster children is lying. When a child feels unwanted, it will resort to negative behavior to first of all attract attention and secondly to protect him or her from more emotional hurt. If a child is constantly being moved into new homes, the child will lie as a way to seek approval without sharing things that are negative. A child’s desperation to be loved often result in resorting to lying to succeed in that quest.

Money is definitely not the motivation for engaging in foster parenting. On the contrary, foster parenting can be very taxing on a family’s budget. It has to be done for bigger and better reasons for it to be worthwhile.

A book marketing plan is an outline that will help you determine where and how you will promote your book. It can also serve as an indicator of how well your book may do in the market, once you publish it.

Ideally, you should draw up this plan well before you send your manuscript to a traditional or POD publisher. Today, many publishers require writers to submit a marketing plan along with their queries.

The problem is, many writers have no clue as to how they’re going to market their books. Often, they publish and hope for the best. The information below is a template that will guide you through the process of creating your first book marketing plan.

1. Your Target Audience: Who is going to read your book? Find out what kinds of books are the most popular in your genre and why. What makes your book stand out from the throng of books currently on the market? Have you tested your book’s idea with prospective readers to determine their interest?

2. The Product: What kind of book have you (or are about to) published? Is it a romance novel or a how-to book on underwater basket-weaving? Will it be available in other formats such as an ebook, podcast, CD-Rom, etc.?

At this stage in your marketing plan, you will need to research your competition to find out what the latest marketing trends are and how to use them to your advantage. You’ll also find out how well your competition is doing. Are their books (and derivative versions) selling like hotcakes or are they struggling to make a single sale?

3. The Price: Research your market to find out what readers are willing to pay for your book’s genre. Where are you going to sell it?

4. The Packaging: Decide how you’re going to design your book cover and marketing materials. Consistency and good design are critical. Again, research your competition to see what their materials like.

How does the design and copy measure up? Both play an equally important job in attracting the reader. How are you going to improve on what they did?

5. Promotion and Publicity: How are you going to promote your book? Where are you going to promote it? Take this time to research every available resource both online and off. Write them down or enter them into a database. Creating and keeping a database is the better option because you can set up columns to track your progress.

Once you have gathered all of this information, you are ready to create your book marketing plan. If you are going to submit this plan to a prospective publisher, make sure to follow their guidelines, if necessary. Otherwise, you can type everything into a report and print it out for future reference.

As a novice writer, I had no idea that cover letters existed until I attempted to submit my first short story manuscript to a publication whose submission guidelines required that a cover letter accompany every manuscript. Once aware of cover letters, however, I found myself confused. So I conducted a bit of research. If you are just embarking on the writer’s journey and seeking to submit your first short story manuscript, hopefully this article will assist you as some guides on cover letters have helped me.

Cover letters are brief letters usually included with short story manuscripts. Normally a letter containing one to three short paragraphs, the cover letter is most often paper-clipped in front of your manuscript’s first page when you are mailing your submission. If you are submitting your manuscript through email, then your cover letter comes before your story as the main body of your email, and still serves as your introduction. Whether you are submitting through postal mail or email, your cover letter should be single-spaced, written in standard block or semi-block format, and double-spaced between paragraphs. If you are mailing your manuscript, then you should consider typing your cover letter on plain white 8 ½ by 11 paper.

As stated, the number of paragraphs in a cover letter can vary. But, regardless of how many paragraphs there are, some information that is usually listed in cover letters includes your story’s title and your story’s word count. If you are submitting your manuscript through mail, as opposed to email, you might also want to state that a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) is enclosed, and that there is no need to return the manuscript.

What you should not include in your cover letter is an in-depth description of your story. I have also recently noticed some submission guidelines where the editors stressed for writers not to include photographs of themselves along with their submissions. Be sure to always read a publication’s most current guidelines, and only send what the editors require you to send. Disobeying submission guidelines can sometimes mean an automatic rejection of your short story.

Not every editor will require you to send cover letters with your short story manuscripts, but when a cover letter is required, try to think of your cover letter as more of a courteous, introductory tool, rather than a sales pitch. Let your cover letter introduce you, and let your story speak for itself. Here’s to more acceptances and less rejections!

A 2006 newspaper report and a 2005 Princeton study spell costly problems for the students and residents of Detroit Schools. In 2006 USA Today reported on a study funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It said that several of the nation’s largest school districts had less than a 50% graduation rate. Detroit Schools, the 11th largest district in the country, was dead last with an appalling 21.7%.

Of course, the study spurred heated debates regarding its accuracy and impartiality. In 2005 the state and city placed the Detroit Schools’ graduation rate at about 44-48%, depending on the source. Some of the discrepancy is accounted for by looking at “timely graduation rates” versus those who graduate in more than the four-year time period. Either way you look at it, no one in Detroit Schools is happy with it.

High School drop-outs cost Detroit Schools, and the city’s residents, money. Lots of money. A 2005 Princeton University study found that a high school drop-out, on average, costs the county $260,000. It estimated that Michigan drop-outs stand to lose over $11 billion in total lifetime income by foregoing the diploma. The reasons are clear.

Whether you look at the Detroit Schools, or any other district, the patterns are the same. High School graduates make more money, live longer lives, have healthier and better educated children, are less likely to become teen parents, are less likely to commit crimes, and are less like to rely on government social and medical services. The Detroit Schools feel the impact of these costs on its high welfare rolls and unemployment rates. The unemployment rate in Michigan is the worst in the country, and the high percentage of drop-outs is directly linked.

Over 50% of the inmates in Michigan jails are high school drop-outs. And it costs the state over $29,000 a year just to house them. 40% of parents on public assistance in the state are also drop-outs of Detroit Schools (or other schools).

The problem gets worse when race is included as a factor. In fact, the Princeton study estimated the increase in personal income that could be attained by raising the “educational attainment” of minority groups to that of white students by 2020. It found that students in Michigan and Detroit Schools would gain over $3 billion in additional total personal income. The question is how to make it happen.

The racial gap has existed for years and it poses a huge problem for the Detroit Schools. Funding for adult education was slashed by over $50 million two years ago. Now the Detroit Schools are struggling to meet mandates for class size and proficiency put in place by the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act.

And in another racially heated move, the US Supreme Court recalled the Brown case that had allowed the use of race as a factor to determine school attendance, and to attempt to integrate schools. This is a touchy subject for Detroit Schools, since the 1974 Milliken v. Bradley decision that said desegregation cannot be enforced across district lines. Many residents of Detroit Schools still view that decision as a factor in the resulting “white flight” that has left Detroit Schools a divided and failing district.
