The Time Value of Money

The time value of money (TVM) is an investment principle that states money is valued greater today than in the future due to inflation and economic conditions. Essentially, a dollar in your pocket today is worth more than a dollar in the future because money may be invested and earn interest over time. The notion of TVM is money is worth more the earlier it is received.

If you loaned a friend $20, would you rather get the money back today or a year from now? You should want the cash today. Think back to the price of movie tickets 10 years ago. The price for a movie ticket at one point was just a few dollars and has risen to almost $10 due to the factor of inflation. By receiving cash today, rather than the future, you can invest the money into an alternate source and potentially receive a higher return for your money. Future value includes the amount of money you would earn through growth in your investments in the future assuming a given interest rate. It is what the cash is worth at a particular time in the future, while present value refers to the value of a given sum of money today. The same principle applies to real estate notes. A real estate note, a mortgage for example, is created with specific terms, conditions and a length of time for its return. In order to exchange the note for cash, a note’s present value is determined through a discount analysis to appraise its current worth, which will differ from the note’s value in 10 years.

To demonstrate TVM and why it can be more advantageous to have money now rather than the future, consider the following example. If you own a real estate note that is appraised at present value for $150,000 you can cash out now and spend the money, or you can invest in alternate sources for a higher return on your investment. By receiving the money today, you can avoid dealing with late payments and the risk of not receiving a payment at all. Immediate cash appeals to most much more than receiving money in the future. The following illustration of TVM shows the change in value of $150,000 over a year if invested with a rate of return of 10 percent.

Future Value = (Present Value) x (1 + Rate of Return)

Future Value = (150,000) x (1 + 10%)

Future Value = (150,000) x (1.1)

Future Value = $165,000

Understanding the time value of money is essential to achieving financial success, as this concept allows you to evaluate the potential value of money today in comparison to the future. When you talk about mortgages, loans, car notes and retirement funds, the practical knowledge of time value of money can help you accomplish the wealth you have longed for.

Do Herding Dogs Make Good Pets?

It isn’t so much a matter of physical exercise, although that would make them very happy and tired. Mental exercise is an absolute must for herding dogs. With proper training and socialization, they are wonderful pets.

Modern breed research and understanding suggests that even intelligent dogs need training. What happens to a lot of herding dogs that get taken to the shelters is that their owners don’t bother to train them. They hear the breed is intelligent and expect it to train itself.

Also a lot of the shelter dogs are impulse buys from pet stores, flea markets and parking lots by people who have no understanding of what a herding breed needs. An untrained and unsocialized herding dog can be a nightmare for a family with young children because they can and often do become very protective and territorial.

That can lead to the dog acting out aggressively based on his natural protective instincts or based on his fear. This is a broad generalization and not all dogs will react this way, but a strong guardian instinct is part of the herding breed standard. This is not surprising because they have been bred since ancient times to guard the farm, ranch, family and livestock.

Positive reinforcement training and consistent socialization are essential to living in peace (and having peace of mind) with a herding dog breed.

Leisure, Play, and Recreation

In today’s American society it is not uncommon for the average citizen to encounter a great deal of “free” time or time away from work. The average workweek has decreased significantly over the past 150 years. In 1850, American’s workweek average was nearly 66 hours (11 hours a day, 6 days a week) . Today’s 5 day weeks and 8 hour days have presented an increased gap in time available for leisure activities. So one might say that leisure is simply a matter of free time, others share different views. One such concept sees leisure not merely as a time block, but as a force, which is not only the germinating concept of art and culture, but a pause during which a participant gains glimpses of values and realities that he ordinarily misses in everyday life. Such a perception supports the proposition that the quality of civilization depends upon such a transmission of values, and the widespread distribution and use of leisure is a matter of great importance, culturally and economically, to a nation.”

Recreation’s definition, given by Merriam-Webster online dictionary is “refreshment of strength and spirits after work; also: a means of refreshment or diversion,” but this doesn’t nearly do it justice. The word itself holds a new meaning to whomever you ask, dependent upon their personal views, beliefs, values, but most importantly - their interests. Recreation to you may not mean the same to a Native American living in southeastern Alaska. His ideology, on the value of spending time, may focus more on family and nature. The culture and environment in which an individual develops and learns has lasting effects on the life that they will lead. This includes the recreational activities in which one participates.

As the country has evolved economically, technologically, and so on, so too has it evolved on its view of recreation. Not so long ago the purpose of hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, and skiing held a much different purpose. The way we were fed, clothed, moved from place to place, etc. were all very much a part of everyday life, not just a way to “unwind.” The accessibility of food, clothing, transportation and the like are no longer the responsibility of the individual hunter, trapper, or fisherman. These activities have taken on a new label in our society - sports. The competitive edge now fills the void where need of survival once reigned.

The sports that have been known throughout the ages have evolved and engulfed so many variations of the kind. “Sport within our society reflects a complex, multi-faceted, socioeconomic system. It also represents a tremendous diversity in participation from a child’s frolic, to unstructured and random play within the home, to the fulfillment of a dream in winning a tournament championship, to the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle through regular sport participation.” There are indeed many forms of sports and many levels and we all have our reasons for participating.

Some experts believe that recreational and leisure activities are engaged in simply as a way to alleviate the built up stressors that evolve in our daily lives. Play can be a safety valve for the excess energy in our bodies and becomes a natural outlet, soothing our physical and psychological well-beings. These theories, however, fail to account for the fact that most individuals do not partake in recreational activities as a means of relieving stress or recharging for the work week to come.

Why then, do people engage in activities on a regular basis? The answer is not a simple one, nor can it be fully addressed since there is such a multitude of opinions, professional or otherwise, on sports and recreation. There are, of course, many reasons why people keep coming back to the same gym for a pick-up game or take out the fishing boat weekend after weekend. Some may be: the love of the game, the adrenaline rush, the excitement, the exercise, the social interaction, etc. My reason for playing what I play, or doing what I do results from a combination of these factors and more like them.

No matter the reason, the motivation, or the cause, we all are participants of what we love. We have evolved along with the sports in which we’ve come to enjoy; and whether we play to win or play just to play doesn’t seem to matter. Rules and regulations can control your play on the court (i.e. dunking, spiking) but they can never control your love of the game - that is your own.

GPS Technology and Child Safety

What parent has had that moment of fright when the child who was just at your side is gone? Usually the child has seen something of interest and just gone to investigate, or has gotten separated in a crowd, such as being at a carnival, and although it may only two seconds to locate your child, it feels like two years and when you do find them your heart is racing, your hands are shaking and you don’t know whether to hug them or scold them.

The possibility of someone taking our child is a real fear every parent carries with them. Just pick up a newspaper or watch the evening news and reports of children being kidnapped or abducted are constant and the heartbreak of the parents is just so overwhelming. Now what if there was a technology that could find that child instantly?

GPS technology is now being used to help keep track of children and allow parents to know where their child is at all times. These devices are usually small enough to fit anywhere-backpack, pants or coat pocket, etc. and lightweight enough not to be burdensome. Some of these have pre-programmable buttons so the child can keep in touch with their parents or call for help if necessary.

These devices range from tracking devices that will beep until the child is found, to cell phones with GPS technology installed, to watches that if forcibly removed will automatically activate. There are even backpacks available with GPS technology installed. Some of these will activate if the child is too far away from the parent. And there is even one that is implanted in a shoe.

Of course the main problems with these are the child is going to lose them, or if the child is abducted they can easily be disposed of. I can envision the day when it will be possible to have a GPS transmitter implanted in a child via an injection or some other simple manner.

There are other concerns also. Are only children with parents who can afford this technology are going to benefit. Is this going to increase the number of lower class children, whose parents can’t afford this new technology, being abducted? Will someone, such as a child molester or kidnapper, find a way to use a child’s transmitter signal to locate the child? Also how are our children to adjust to the fact that they are constantly being monitored?

How secure are our children going to feel knowing that the world is so dangerous that their parents need to know where they are at all times? Are we stripping a part of their childhood away from them? Who doesn’t remember, as a kid, going somewhere you knew your parents didn’t want you to go, but as children we are adventurers, and if we got into trouble or got ‘caught’ being where we shouldn’t be, we more than likely not only got punished but also learned a lesson. We grow and mature by making mistakes and learning from them, are we going to take part of this education away from our children? At what age do we stop? Do we continue to monitor them through their teen-age years? A time that can be the hardest time of any child’s or parents life, it’s a time where a teenager needs to mature and a parent needs to learn to ‘let go’ and allow the child to learn on their own-mistakes and all.

Although this technology has some very great qualities in the protection of our children, the possibility of abusing this technology must also be addressed. We all want our children to be safe, yet at the same time they must be allowed to grow to become functional adults.

How To Hire Executive Protection

Doing business sometimes comes along with a high degree of risk. There are patents that might be stolen. There are top secret plans that competitors are interested in obtaining. There’s the money that comes from a high level of success.

Because of the risks and dangers associated with professionals who have reached a pinnacle of performance, many companies have begun to look into executive protection.

In many cases, executive protection comes in the form of a security advisor - a bodyguard of sorts - who works one on one with a high level executive. In other cases, executive protection is provided by a team of individuals who work together to identify which executives need security and what possible threats may be.

If you are looking into executive protection for within your business, following these steps can help you to make the right decisions.

1. Identify what your executive protection needs are. Which individuals in your organization are at risk? What are the risks to your organization - is there a potential for kidnapping, do high ranking officers of the company go to dangerous places or interact extensively with the media? By taking the time to identify what your executive protection needs are, you can better choose the right professionals to perform those services.

2. Recognize that executive protection is not about muscled bodyguards as much as it is about having a plan in place for dealing with threats should they arise. Someone who offers executive protection is likely to have a keen eye for detail and to notice any indication that something could go awry.

3. Ensure that the staff of the company who will benefit from executive protection recognize that the service is meant to keep them safe; if your staff do not know and understand the risk, they will not work well with the members of the executive protection team.

4. Set limits so that the staff members to whom executive protection are assigned do not feel as though their personal space is being invaded; choose a protection system that will still allow them to feel as though they can leave work at the office.

5. Take the time to research your options and interview more than one person when you plan to hire executive protection. It’s important to know that you’re hiring the right people for the job.

One thing that you can do to ensure that you’re choosing the right executive protection is to hire individuals who have experience assessing risk, performing security checks and finding background information - individuals who are also private investigators are often a great addition to your executive protection team.

When a private investigator offers executive protection for your company, you can feel confident that risks from individuals are reduced because background checks can be performed. You’ll be able, if you desire, to implement security systems within the office or business location. You will also, of course, be able to work with someone who has experience evaluating situations - making it easy to know that your executive protection will indeed keep your staff safe.

Funding Fido’s Healthcare

Health insurance, car insurance, vacation insurance - why not pet insurance?

If you think about it - pet insurance makes sense. Whether your dog (or cat) is a purebred or a mutt, he’s bound to feel a little under the weather or have an accident (not on the carpet - one that’s a little more health related). And if you have health insurance, it’ll make paying for that emergency surgery or treating your pet’s chronic illness a little more palatable.

The cost of fishing a foreign body out of Fluffy’s stomach or correcting Fido’s hip dysplasia alone can run into the thousands - so if you can afford the monthly cost of health insurance, it’s definitely worth the nominal expense.

If you’re thinking about getting healthcare coverage for your pets, be sure to ask these questions of the insurance provider:

1. Are there age restrictions for coverage?
2. Will the premiums rise as my pet ages or when the benefits are used?
3. What is the deductible?
4. How much of the claim will the insurer pay (less the deductible, of course)?
5. Are there limitations on which veterinarian I can use?
6. Is there a restrictive schedule of benefits?
7. What is the term of the policy?
8. Does the policy cover chronic and hereditary conditions?
9. What is the cost?

When you’re finally ready to do a little research, check PETCO’s site ( www.petco.com/Content/Article.aspx?PC=article&Nav=153&PetTypeID=1&TopicID=12&id=2556 http://www.petco.com/Content/Article.aspx?PC=article&Nav=153&PetTypeID=1&TopicID=12&id=2556 ) - that’s where I found some of the most valuable information on the topic. But your vet’s office and your local Humane Society should also be able to offer some information to help you in your quest.

Of course, you should also do plenty of shopping around to find the right coverage for your pet - at the right price for your household budget. But instead of wasting time calling the insurance companies, check them out online. Most of them offer quotes in a matter of minutes

Levi Jeans

What can one say about Levi jeans? They are every where for one. Jeans today, are recognized as casual as well as semi formal wear. In some countries even formal. We don’t really know for sure how a corporate environment may react to an employee wearing a pair of jeans, but in colleges and schools it is all there is.

Dress code - casual: Jeans. Dress code - semi formal : Jeans. Dress code - formal: Jeans. You get the picture. Next question that would come to mind is where would one find such a pair. Every where would be the right answer. All one has to be aware of, to own a pair of Levi’s, are the basics of shopping, and things aren’t even as complicated as the A, B, C’s.

Levi Jeans are a product of the ever famous company Levi Straus and co. started of by Levi Straus. The riveted jeans are a by-product of an innovation, as so many others, created by necessity. Turns out that Levi Straus set up a company and used to work with a tailor called Jacob. Jacob over a period of time became concerned with customers who would rip out pockets just to get more work out of him. He decided to put rivets on them. It worked out so well, that he wanted to patent this idea. For the lack of money he partnered with Levi Straus and the rest was history. Apparently Levi 501 jeans are a direct descended of the first riveted pairs.

Available in every town that is worth a mention, Levi jeans are not the only brands that are offered by the company. Before we go into brands, did you know that before baby boomers, who adopted jeans, denim was essentially used as workmen clothes? Brands that Levi Straus jeans carry include Levi (of course) Dockers and Levi Straus signature

Choosing The Best File Recovery Solution

All file recovery solutions are not created equally. But, choosing one specific software or service company can be overwhelming from the sheer numbers available. For starters, why do some file recovery software cost as low as $29.99, while others range as much as $400? Before addressing these details, and how to choose the best file recovery solution for your situation, let’s make sure your files have the best chance to be recovered.

Safety First…

If you are reading this article on the computer you are trying to recover files from, do the following steps immediately (Your computer is always running in the background, and could be overwriting the data you are trying to recover):

1. Close any important documents that are open.

2. Print this article to follow off-line.

3. Unplug your computer (Do not turn off your computer, unplug it now.).

Note: Unplugging the computer stops the computer from running all together. Turning off or shutting down your computer might make the computer go through a process that could overwrite data - your files.

What not to do…

1. Do not run the system recovery disk from the computer manufacturer. This software is designed to get your computer running again with no regard to your data. In other words, it is not designed as a file recovery solution. Just ask the manufacturer if there is a possibility that you could lose data. Yes, is always the answer.

2. Do not install file recovery software on the computer you are trying to recover files from, for this could overwrite the files you are trying to recover. You must have a secondary storage device (i.e. hard disk drive, USB device, etc.) to install the program and to recover the files.

Note to Advanced Users: Even if you are trying to recover a particular partition, and already have a separate partition to install the file recovery software on, do not do it. Since there is possible corruption within the file system at this point, you run the risk of overwritting the partition and files you are trying to recover during the installation process. Better safe than sorry. Install the program on a secondary drive.

File Recovery Software…

Which file recovery software you choose depends on what has happened:

1. Have you accidentally delete a file that you want back?

2. Have you lost a file, or found it damaged upon opening it?

3. When starting your computer, has it failed to boot to the desktop,

invoking a blue or black screen, or an error message (write that message down)?

Accidentally deleted files can usually be recovered by File Undelete software, which lucky for you is the cheapest solution at about $30 USD. If you cannot locate a file afer running the program, the file system (where the files lie) may have been altered, deleted, or damaged. This means, File Undelete software cannot work, and you should use a complete file recovery product.

Lost or damaged files require a complete file recovery software, which usually costs about $100 USD. (Professional grade recovery software which include multiple recovery functions costs as much as $400). If you cannot locate a file after running the program, or if your computer failed to boot to the desktop, you may need File Recovery Services.

File Recovery Services…

A good rule of thumb at choosing a file recovery service company is, if they develop and sell file recovery software - not just sell them, they should have reliable in-lab services (After fifteen years of developing file recovery software, and knowing who is who in the industry, I can attest to this point). Also, full-scale recovery companies only do file recovery and computer forensics. So, ask a computer related question like, can you install a network with thirty computers? Yes means hang up the phone. Remember, you always get what you pay for and nobody works for free.

In conclusion, the saying in the industry is file recovery is not, if it will happen, but when will it (and will you be prepared). Prevention is the best solution. So, to ensure the safety of your files in the future (not to mention the hassle of having to go this process again) consistently do the following:

1. Back-up files daily to a secondary storage device, not on the main hard disk drive where you originally saved them.

2. Defrag your computer regularly. Doing so will increase the probability of a successful recovery if you ever encounter this problem again.

3. At least once a month confirm your back-up is working properly. This is a common problem.

Disabled Children and Commercial Playground Equipment

“Play is an important part of your child’s physical, social, intellectual and emotional development,” according to KidsHealth.org. Here at Creative Recreational Systems, we believe that children of all ages and disabilities should enjoy the same quality playground experience. This is why we work hard to comply with ADA requirements and safety guidelines.

Safety experts suggest that the safest surfacing for playgrounds is either wood chips or rubber surfacing. However, wood chips do not provide a sturdy enough surface for wheelchairs to maneuver. ASTM standards state that for wheelchair access, surfaces are required to be firm, stable, and slip resistant as specified in ADAAG. This is why Creative Systems specializes in SofTile surfacing, a surface that is durable enough to withstand weather and wear, soft enough to cushion, and sturdy enough to provide easy wheelchair access. We supply and install ADA compatible ramps so that your playground can be fully accessible to those disabled. We also offer a large variety of playground equipment which we can personalize and combine to meet your unique needs. We supply ground level play components, such as swings and stand alone climbers, to accommodate ground play for disabled children. Our elevated play components also meet ADA requirements by being wheelchair accessible.

Many of our site furnishings also meet ADA standards. We offer ADA compliant picnic tables that provide easy wheelchair access at both ends, as well as rounded corners for added safety. When possible, we try to exceed the ADA guidelines to provide increased accessibility and opportunities. At Creative Systems, we strive to give all children a fulfilling, educational, fun, and overall safe environment in which to play.

Texas Hold’Em Strategy

To win a game of Texas Hold’em you need to understand that it involves strategy and wit. You will need to use mathematics, cunning and skills for success. Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to improve your game.

Reading will improve your game

To play you must read as much as you can to get a feel of how this game is played. It is not enough to concentrate on just one style or one person’s experience. Read everything you can.

Continue to practice your Texas Hold’em Strategy

Play as much as you can to practice the skills you’ve got and to develop new ones. Playing Texas Hold’ems as much as you can helps you improve your skills as well as your confidence. Confidence becomes a necessary tool when things are not going so well.

Understand all your options

You must learn all the options of the Texas Hold’em Strategy. Beginners would learn best on the free tables but after a while you will have to get onto the high stakes tables to learn more. When playing on the free tables there is no risk involved so people tend to bluff a lot. This is not the only option. There is also the option of checking or folding among others.

Play Real Stakes to understand the game

It is a good idea to continue to practice on the free tables but when you can get on the high stakes tables to learn other skills from players. On a table where high risk is involved there will naturally be players of a higher caliber so you will learn to be more effective in your game.

Switch styles to help your strategy

Change your style. If you play different styles you will improve your game. Try being careful at the beginning of a game and then become more aggressive as the game progresses. Observe how others react to this change of style. This method keeps others in the dark about your strategy and helps your game.

See how others play.

Observe others play the game. The purpose of Texas Hold’em is to win money. If someone is winning money, learn how they play and make it a part of your strategy.
