The San Diego Natural History Museum has an impressive range in its collection. As of this writing, there’s the fossil section, a section on the big fire in San Diego in 2003, rocks and minerals and a variety of educational programs.

We watched a movie in their movie theater. The current one is on Vikings, but of course the selection changes regularly, so don’t count on this being current information for long. The theater is large and comfortable - almost stadium seating with how the seats are tiered, but the chairs are not so high backed as in other movie theaters. The entire family enjoyed the movie.

The second floor is where the fossils are, and this was the area we spent the most time on. There’s a cave for the kids to play in, and it was hard to get my daughter to leave that area.

The kids will also enjoy joining magnetic parts to make various animals. Depending on age, it can be a bit tricky for them to figure out which part goes where, but since there are only about 5 or 6 parts per animal, it’s not too tough.

My kids weren’t all that impressed by the microscopic fossils that could be examined. A quick look, then they were bored. I found those quite interesting, however, and older children may as well.

If you think back to October 2003 and the gigantic fire we had here in San Diego, you’ll find the section on that fire quite interesting. Brings back a lot of memories, even though my home was not threatened at that time.

In the basement level there is currently an exhibit called “Dinosaurs: Reel and Robotic”. The kids loved this part. No pictures are allowed, so I can’t share anything like that with you. It’s a great exhibit, though. The basement exhibit changes at least once or twice a year. Last year it was robotic bugs. However, the times I have been there it has always been something really interesting for the kids.

The outside of the building is quite interesting. They’ve made changes to the building through the years, so one side is very old fashioned with lots of accents while the other side is quite modern. The building is just huge, but quite a bit of it is not open to the public.

The museum is free for San Diego city and county residents and active duty military the first Tuesday of each month. ID is required. If there are exhibits that require separate admission, those will still require admission.

Let’s face it: you are probably working for far less than you need to. And the sad thing is, you may not even be aware of it or the options you have! As of now, we’re going to change that for you, and possibly share with you not only a thought but a vehicle that can change your financial life.

We are going to show you how to get much more out of your sales time investment.

This probably applies more to the part time, home based business person than the professional…but we have seen, met, and talked with professionals who really are under- valuing their return on time investment. I know.. we are using that time investment word alot all ready. But you MUST consider it just as you do a cash or money investment.

In fact, it’s even more important because once spent or invested, you can’t ever get that particular moment or minute back. It’s gone. You can always invest more money, but you only have so much irreplaceable time. Your sales time investment is one of the most precious ones you can ever make.

As we look at business models, we find on one end, the model that proposes high volume but low profit per sale.

Walmart has certainly shown this works, and many, many, many supermarkets work this same way. It will work if you have the ability to create large volumes of sales. The question is: Do you. If you are a individual sales rep or a small business, just how much of an opportunity do you have to create really large volumes. The appeal to the small business person is to do this by creating some type of a multi-level (also and probably incorrectly referred to as a pyramid) sales organization. In the ideal world, IF you can do this, you can create volume. But this could take years to accomplish, and still never guarantee any income or security because (1)The company behind it could go out of business, be taken over.. or any number of things, (2) The pay plan could change, or (3) The group suddenly dissolve, particularly if or when a heavy hitter or group leader decides to switch to another business and takes his distributors or sales force with him. Did you make a good sales time investment if you chose this model?

Of course you still have the ability to sell the product or service yourself, but (1) Can you do volume, and (2) Is the profit per personal sale worth your time?

The second business model, at the other end of the spectrum, is one that provides a relatively high profit or earning per sale. Sometimes we think of real estate people and car sales people in this category, as well as sales people of specialized capital equipment. But that’s not the majority of us.

The downside here is that if we are thinking about selling a high ticket/high profit item, we have to ask (1) Is there a large market and prospect base? and if we are thinking in terms of an ability for a part time person–possibly a stay at home mom , can this high ticket, high profit product or service be first mastered in terms of the technology, and second, is the customer prospect base readily accessible?

In most cases, the answer to those two questions is no, not available .

But if it is or was, then here’s a fact that can be virtually carved in stone:

IT TAKES NO MORE TIME OR SKILLS TO SELL THE HIGH PROFIT PACKAGE THAN IT DOES TO SELL THE MASS PRODUCT WITH ONLY PENNIES OR DIMES IN PROFIT!

Think about that! This is ALL relative to your sales time investment, and once more: It’s the MOST IMPORTANT investment y ou have to make.

Ask yourself: Am I working for pennies or dimes when instead with the right vehicle I could be working for dollars?

If the answer is yes, and this is so true of particularly home based business entrepreneurs who are involved in sale of nutritional supplements, skin care, fad gadgets, etc., then ask yourself, Am I doing this because I want to earn a nice income, and do it as quickly as possible… or am I kidding myself about that goal and I just want to get products wholesale or discounted and have some fun?

Nothing wrong with that, by the way, if you have an hones assessment of what you are doing and why.

But….. If your goal is in the area of $4000-$5000 a month or more, and you also don’t want to spend all your waking hours working your business , then it’s time to change.

As your article writer, I can tell you this is an article written from the school of hard knocks and one that really had us so emotionally involved with the businesses. Rah rah rah; recognition, pins, etc. Amway. Free Life. Primerica.

Herbal Life. Been there, done that. Made some money? Yes, but far, far, far less than in other options. And that’s just the part time side of things we did to supplement our real job. Ahh, the tween years. Has it really been 12 years since the little bundle came home from the hospital? New parents think that if they can only make it through potty training and toddler separation anxiety, the rest will be a piece of cake. As a parent who has lived to tell the tale a few times over, I’m here to tell ya, ‘It Ain’t So.’

You think you had it bad when little Susie cut her bangs into some crazy porcupine looking do at the sweet age of 3? Just wait until same darling Susie hits the ripe old age of 12 and begins entering adolescence and starts watching MTV. Overnight your little sweet heart will grow horns and objects will begin moving around your house on their own. Yes, your precious daughter will be possessed by the Tween Demon.

What does all of the above nonsense have to do with your soon-to-be-possessed 12 year old daughter’s birthday party planning? Nothing much really, other than the fact that said demon child will also no longer think that anything you do or suggest or think or wear is a good idea, and will constantly roll her mean little eyes at you to make sure you’re aware of your short-comings. In other words Mom or Dad, don’t bother trying to plan a nice birthday for your kid that involves Barbies, animals, cartoon characters, Princesses or anything else made by Disney, except for perhaps Hillary Duff, but she’s another story now that she’s all grown up, and in my lowly opinion, part of the problem. But don’t quote me.

Now you’re sitting there wondering ‘What in the world am I going to do?’, ‘This bitter woman has scared the heck out of me!’, ‘Will Susie really become a monster overnight?’ Fortunately my friend the answer is ‘maybe.’ So better grin and prepare for the worst just to be safe. On to devising a plan for your daughter’s birthday that will perhaps grant you a minute or two of ‘coolness’ in your child’s eyes, and maybe even warrant an actual smile from her eye-rolling face and ‘oh my god mom’ chanting mouth.

I have an idea. Now this may sound sneaky and a little underhanded, but you could always make up some kind of ‘flyer’ on your computer and anonymously mail it to your kid. She’ll love getting her own mail, and if she takes the bait, she’ll think the birthday party idea was her own. On this little bit of creative advertising you could place info about the perfect birthday party idea for girls ages 10-12.

Something that my now 14 year old daughter fell madly in love with at around age 12 are bath and body products. Showers went on, and still do, forever, causing many uncomfortable moments for the males in the house who weren’t wearing diapers at the time (one bathroom…) She couldn’t get enough of the stuff, and wanted to be taken to the mall to the ‘Bath and Body’ store every weekend. My own facial and spa products began to disappear as the Tween Demon consumed everything that involved baths and masks. I’ll never forget the slumber party where a table of demons sat around with pore strips on their noses, in total awe of their extreme coolness.

Are you following where I’m going with this devious plan to outsmart the Tween Demon? On your flyer you will place all of the products and ideas needed to plan a wonderful ‘Spa Day’ Birthday party, just perfect for 12 year old girls. She’ll go nuts for it and will call her friends to get the plans started.

Now of course there are exceptions to the rule, and not every 12 year old girl will go for the idea of pampering and manicures, but you should know your own kid well enough to determine if ‘Spa Day’ is the theme to use. If not, choose a theme that goes along with the stuff hanging up on her bedroom walls. But let her think it’s her own idea, and then applaud her for her creativity and provide what she needs for a perfect Tween Demon birthday party.

Remember to stay out of the way, but close enough to show you’re supporting her and still around. TD’s are very much like TT’s aka: Terrible Twos, adamantly determined to proclaim their independence, but yet will still look over their shoulder every now and then to make sure you’re there. It’s really amazing that you can get the exact value listening to an audio book while doing your normal chores as you would reading it.

Certain experts even say information sinks in more when we are not paying direct attention to them.

But when did this audio book phenomenon really start? In other words, what’s the history of audio books?

From all indications, audio books look like a very recent invention, right?

WRONG!

It is very easy to make the assumption that audio books are a recent invention because of the mention of CDs, downloadable digital formats, MP3s, PDAs and other technological jargons each time audio books are discussed. But audio books started a long time ago.

To know how long audio books have been, it is pertinent to understand exactly what audio books are.

Forget about any other jargon you have heard, audio books are simply books that are recorded to be heard, instead of read.

That being the case, such recordings of books in audio formats have been around for a very long time. If you want to be specific, it is safe to say they were first introduced over half a century ago.

It could even be longer, if you include the Library of Congress recordings made especially for the American Foundation for the Blind and distributed free throughout the U.S.

However, according to Robin Whitten, the editor and founder of the only magazine which is dedicated solely to the audio book industry:

Audiofile– www.AudioFileMagazine.com http://www.AudioFileMagazine.com , Caedmon (now a subsidiary of Harper Collins Publishers) can be credited to have started the recordings of literature as far back as 50 years ago.

Going further, he said Caedmon was just a small company way back then in New York, which started recording the audio of great authors and poets of the 1950s. Specifically, he said one of the earliest recordings were by greats such as Dylan Thomas, T.S. Eliot, Fitzgerald and Robert Frost.

What happened then was that they were simply recorded while doing their own works and made as vinyl records.

But these early recordings can arguably pass off for the first collection of audio books ever.

However, the transition of these book recordings into audiocassette tapes didn’t happen until the late 1970s up to the 1980s. From thence, it blossomed until audio books in audiocassette tapes came to be accepted by all and sundry.

For whatever reason however, the audio book phenomenon didn’t really kick off until the 1990s.

And with the transition from audiocassette technology into CDs, more people have become interested in audio books.

With the advent of the Internet and its paraphernalia, audio books have now transited from vinyl records, audiocassette taps and CDs into downloadable digital formats that can be listened to with a desktop computer, laptop computer, PDAs, etc.

If you are still interested in going back in time you can get the original book recordings that started this audio book industry.

Impossible?

Not really.

Some of those early 1950s analog recordings by Caedmon which were performed by the greats of those days can be purchased today on the Internet.

For example, recently I was able to browse the Internet thoroughly and found the original recording of The Lord of the Rings as read by J.R.R. Tolken.

You can find that classic you have always dreamt of in audio book format if you search hard enough on the Internet.

Since it came out in the early 1990s, the relationship book, “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus” has sold million of copies. The book and the author John Gray have since achieved almost cult status worldwide. John Gray has since become the world number 1 relationship author and speaker.

Being a book on relationships of sexes, “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus” had never appeal to a guy like me. To me, it was simply one of those self-help books to take up from the shelves under the ’stressed’ circumstances between your partner/spouse and you and you want solution to your relationship problems. Indeed I was caught in a web of estranged relationship which prompted me to go for it as it was the only alternative cheap solution than finding a psychologist.

Like many others, I have found my life and some of my relationships reflected among the pages. The book was very helpful in clearing up some of the causes of failed romances in my past. When relationships are faced with challenges and problems, many of us will always try to shut ourselves out and think that our problems are unique to us and no one could help us. We would often blame others but ourselves. I am one of them. I wish I could say that I can learn from my mistakes but only time will tell. Ever since I read the book, I began to see things differently and have a more open and forgiving not only to my loved ones but to others. My relationship has benefited tremendously. Frankly speaking, if not for that instant of impulse to get the book, I will be still in my previous state of confusion over my relationship and my attitudes toward life and love.

John Gray explains the psychological differences between men and women particularly on the difference between what they say and what they mean. Being a psychologist, he has manged to use a huge pool of real-life examples from his own therapy sessions as counselor to help us understand and perceive situations from these different view points. In the book, John Gray interestingly called the Men as Martians and Women as Venusians who both speak different languages. They are only remotely connected to English.

The “Martians” Men like to filter life’s information. Gray explains that when faced with problems or challenges, the “Martians” Men like to isolate themselves, chew on them, determine its scope, and try to solve it on my own. They do not others to offer help to them and want others to trust them that they can handle the situation and resolve them rationally.
