Stopping the Impossible

World War II ended more than sixty years ago. Its veterans are now as old as their World War I predecessors I remember from Armistice Day assemblies designed to hold our young minds still on the fact that these conflicts were real. They involved sacrifice, huge loss, and human triumph over a seemingly insurmountable enemy. But it was this second War to End All Wars that held the most horrific of secrets, revealed as Allied troops liberated German concentration camps. The secret was the Holocaust, a measured, intentional plan to destroy the people deemed unworthy for inclusion in Hitler’s definition of a perfect world. If the British had not been able to hold off a steady flow of German air raids, if thousands of ordinary people had not hidden their Jewish friends and neighbors, and if the United States had not entered the war, the world would surely be a different place today. The simple fact is that Hitler most likely would have succeeded, and we would not be safe.

We would would know what the people of Darer feel tonight.

Darer is located in the Western section of the African nation Sudan. African Muslims living in this region are facing annihilation by pro-government troops and Arab militias. Ethnic cleansing, a term with which we have become all too familiar in recent years, is being used again to describe this first genocide of the twenty-first century. People driven from their homes and off their land are now being stalked, then raped and murdered by their tormentors each night as they try to gather wood for campfires to cook food for their children, the ones who escaped with their lives. Their siblings were not all so fortunate. Between 200,000 and 400,000 people are already dead. Those camped on the border of neighboring Chad also face the soon-to-arrive rainy season. Their journey is far from over, and home is only a distant memory.

The rallying cry since those World War Ii death camps were discovered has been two fold: If we had known we would have done something, and, Never again.

We now know, and we must act. As ordinary citizens, as people of faith living in a country that claims a moral stand on individual rights, we must do more than was done for the people of Germany, the people of Cambodia, and the people of Rwanda. We must act before this time of mass killing escalates further. We must act before this slaughter becomes a distant, irreparable memory. We must remember the days of old, consider the years long past; ask your father, and he will inform you; your elders, and they will tell you (Deuteronomy 3:27). We must remember, and we must take these memories and be empowered by them, outraged by them, and we must act. We must act, out of faith in God, and love for our sisters and brothers who need us.

Stop Genocide rallies were held across our nation this past Sunday, April 30, urging the Bush administration to take stronger action to end the violence in Sudan’s Darer region. Thousands of people converged on Washington to add their support. The rallies have passed, but the need has not. We can still let President Bush, who clearly stated that another genocide would not occur on his watch, know that we want to help the Sudanese people who are suffering. We can tell our friends, notify our congresswomen and men, our senators and let the White House itself know that what is happening in Africa is wrong, and that it must stop.

We see all too clearly the hatred that has bred this violence, but let us also see what love the father has given us that we should be called children of God, and that is what we are (I John 3:1). Let us see this love, and act on it.

Consolidate Debt To Make Debt Repayment Easier

Consolidate debt and take the worry out of making monthly payments. When was the last time a month passed by without you stressed about bill payments, or how much you charged on your credit cards?

Your debt just seems to keep growing and you find it harder and harder to make ends meet. With the average household having 10 credit cards, you are probably finding it more difficult to keep track of multiple credit card payments, bills, loan statements, and more. If you consolidate debt, you can make it much easier to pay off your debt.

When you consolidate debt, you combine your multiple debts into one easy to manage loan. By doing this, you make one payment each month to one lender instead of having to keep track of a bunch of different debts from multiple lenders. It makes it much easier to manage and you lower your risk of missing payments and ruining your credit.

Negotiating a debt consolidation loan allows you to get a lower interest rate. In order to be competitive, lenders usually offer a lower interest rate than you are currently paying on your outstanding debts (especially credit cards). This can save you a great deal of money over the long run.

When you consolidate debt, you lower your monthly payments. Having only one loan lowers the amount you will have to repay each month compared to the total amount you have to repay for your multiple debts.

Different options are available to consolidate debt - secured loans or unsecured loans. Secured loans use collateral to back the loan in case of default. These types of loans usually provide the lowest interest rates since the lender’s risk is offset by the collateral. Unsecured loans are backed only by your credit worthiness and do not require collateral. Since only your reputation backs the loan, the interest rate is usually a little higher than a secured loan.

Types of secured loans include a home equity loan, a home equity line of credit and cash-out mortgage refinancing. Some more creative methods include automobile refinancing, a 401k loan and using your whole life insurance.

Types of unsecured loans include personal loans. You can also use no interest credit cards to consolidate your credit card debt through balance transfer but you need to know what you’re doing. Done improperly, they can cost you dearly. Done properly, they can save you a lot of money.

Although you struggle with debt everyday now, you can make it much easier to repay your debts. If you consolidate debt, you can make your debt situation much more manageable. As your debt keeps growing, now may be the time to act.

Ozzy versus Amy: The Prince of Darkness verses the Evil Princess of the Undead

Sometimes I wonder if Phoenix is considered the back end of concert dates. So many acts tend to take their Arizona Fans for granted or just bypass us when they have to cancel or reschedule another date. Others seem to forget that we tend to turn out in big numbers for almost any event. Ozzy obviously forgot or just didn’t bleeping care.

Despite a monstrous crowd and dollars flying across the concession tables faster than bats out of hell, Ozzy managed to snub his Arizona Fans by failing to appear at the Phoenix Ozzfest event this past summer. And that’s ironic since Phoenix hosted one of the two very first Ozzfest events in 1996. The other was held in Los Angeles. Maybe we just weren’t worthy of the Master of Metal this year? Not everyone was willing to pay one to three hundred dollars for a ticket and sacrifice their firstborn to Ozzy.

If you’re going to skip out on fans, at least have the decency to record a video welcome message or greeting. There were lots of big screens around, so everyone would have seen it. If Ozzy had lost his voice or didn’t feel well enough to speak, he could have offered a middle finger salute or bitten the head off one of the Backstreet Boys. If even that was too much to ask, the Prince of Darkness could have had his dogs come and crap all over the stage or asked Sharon to open the event by throwing some frozen poultry at the first few fans to arrive. If all else failed, his kids could have come and set fire to piles of N Sync and Snoop Dog CDs to get everyone in the mood for the day’s events.

Fortunately, there are some major acts out there that really care about the fans in this town and know how to show it. Mick Jaeger had some throat problems, so The Stones recently cancelled a few dates in the USA. Phoenix was not one of them. AFI, the CHILI PEPPERS, TAKING BACK SUNDAY and GWAR really rocked the Valley of the Sun over the summer. But my favorite was Evanescence.

I’ll be the first to admit that I hadn’t been up to date on all things Evanescence until my wife brought the Band to my attention several months ago. After I started listening to their music, I was glad she did. It’s been some time since I heard anything that was melodic and unique. While fans might argue otherwise, most artists that manage to get signed these days seem like clones of struggling late eighties alternative music bands or the now infamous and always whiney sounds of the nineties.

I like music that’s different and hate to admit it, but the last concert that I thought was refreshingly distinctive was a Buster Poindexter and the Banshees of Blue show in the early nineties. It was a smaller venue and the music was hot! Being from New York City, I guess I’m a bit jaded. I had the opportunity to be exposed to a constant flow of live music in the form of big acts, street bands and everything in between before relocating to Arizona. On the flipside, it also means that I hold performers to a higher standard and know great music when I hear it. That’s how I felt when attended the Evanescence Concert at the Celebrity Theater last week.

After reading up on Amy Lee and the various Evanescence personnel changes for a couple of weeks before the big night, I was ready for the concert. We bought our tickets as soon as they went on sale. To be honest, they were a bargain for a concert held at the Celebrity Theater. That venue is as intimate as you can get without renting the local high school gym and using only half the space. One would expect to shell out the usual hundred bucks or more for being almost within arms reach of a class act like Evanescence, but we paid somewhere in the thirty to forty dollar range.

Listening to Revelation Theory open the show and hearing Amy Lee belt out her first couple of songs with Evanescence, I really felt guilty for paying so little to see so much talent in such an intimate setting. To make up for it, I tried to buy my wife and kids some band tees. By the time we got up to the front of a very long line, the good sizes were gone. I bought some anyway because I’ve been trying to lose a few pounds lately. If I had any doubts about the band, it had nothing to do with their music or performance. I just wondered if they were getting their fair share?

Reading some of the comments attributed to her by various websites and blogs, I understood that there probably would not be any Amy Lee perfume, designer clothes, signature make up lines or Evanescence action figures available anywhere in the near future. However, whether she is or isn’t a material girl, Amy has to know that she must have been personally responsible for the sudden increase in sales of things like dark eyeliner, black and white knee length socks and long black dresses. Oops, I forgot, and about a billion dollars worth of black hair dye.

It’s not unusual to find artists who are unaware of their actual popularity or real earning potential. After all, they are Artists, not financiers. I got the distinct impression that the members of Evanescence were legitimately surprised by the numbers of fans that showed up for the sold-out event and the many more who wanted tickets and couldn’t get in.

Amy offered an apology for the smaller venue, but all of us really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere. However, here’s a bit of advice from the older and wiser to the lovely and immensely talented Miss Lee and her musical partners: Next time charge extra for the intimacy, find more stuff to sell and return those calls from the big management agencies. Even the ‘evil princess of the undead’ can always use a few extra zeros behind a nice large number in her bank account. Amy and the band certainly earn it!

Oh, yea, I almost forgot. Ozzy, burn in Hell!

How to Beat the Banks at the Credit Card Game

This financial tip is an answer to a letter I recently received from Debbie. She asks: “We’ve been battling credit cards for most of our married life. We’re finally getting on top of the situation. We’ve paid off almost all of our cards with one left to go. It feels good! It makes me extremely angry to get two and three new offers of credit cards almost every day. I take great joy in tearing all of them up and throwing them away. The minimum payments have gone up. Interest rates are astronomical! Is there anyone who goes to bat for the consumer on credit cards or are the big banks just leading us to the slaughter? It appears that the banks can do about anything they want. Thanks!”

First of all, congratulations on your efforts to get out of debt. As I’ve mentioned in the past, this has to be a major priority for all Christians. We are to be slaves to Christ, not to lenders.

Unfortunately, the banks have a lot of power to influence Congress, so they are able to do just about anything they want. Which means anyone who has credit card debt knows what Scripture is talking about when it says, “the borrower is servant to the lender.”

You’re doing the very best thing you can do to control the banks - pay off the cards. And then stay out of debt. If you can’t control your spending with credit cards, cut them up and stay away. Credit cards are a great tool if you know how to control them. Unfortunately, most people don’t. Researchers say that the average person spends about 30% more when they use a credit card compared to using cash only. That’s why radio talk-show host Dave Ramsey tells all his listeners to cut up their cards.

I think that’s the best course of action for most people. Remember, the banks make money with credit cards three ways: interest charges, late payment and other user fees, and through merchant fees (fees charged to the companies that accept credit cards). The latter will often result in higher prices you pay for the things you buy. The first two, you have more control over.

If you decide to use credit cards, you must pay them off every month and use them only for items you would buy with cash. That means you have to stay within your budget. If you can do that, then credit cards are a good tool to use. But if you can’t, then cut them up.

As for the credit card offers you receive in the mail, there’s an easy way to stop those. Check out my article that tells you how to do it in just 5 minutes (visit www.wisdomsedge.com/newsletters/vol1/V1N24.htm#finance http://www.wisdomsedge.com/newsletters/vol1/V1N24.htm#finance for details).

Success Lessons From Wellington The Iron Duke

Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), who later became the Duke of Wellington and the hero who beat Napoleon at Waterloo, had to overcome his own mother’s lack of faith in him in order to make a success of his military career.

She once commented: I vow to God I don’t know what I shall do with my awkward son, Arthur . She even believed he had little aptitude for soldiering! Perhaps this motivated him to become one of the greatest generals in British military history. Several key success lessons can be learned from his life.

Millions are programmed from an early age by their own parents and friends who place verbal limits on what they can achieve. Too often, they allow these limits to control them for the rest of their lives. Wellesley, for one, managed to demolish the limits placed on him by his own mother.

However, at first, Arthur appeared to prove that his mother’s opinion of him was correct. He showed little aptitude for anything except playing the violin and socializing.

But, by 1793, when the French King was guillotined and war was declared on France, he had learned the huge success lesson of the importance of focus. He decided to take his army career seriously and burnt his violin in his fireplace so that he could concentrate all his energies on succeeding as a soldier.

This was probably a wise move. The old saying Jack of all trades and master of none, has real meaning. Successful people soon learn that they cannot do everything they want to and need to concentrate their energies on a few key projects.

Wellesley and his family had enough influence and money to buy his way up the officer ranks of the army. He was able to rise extremely quickly from the status of a junior officer to that of lieutenant-colonel at the age of 25.

He used the leverage of family and money to speed up his progress to military success. Successful people do not go it alone if they can help it. Life is too short.

However, Wellesley did not rely on family influence alone. After his regiment was sent to India in 1796, Wellesley began to distinguish himself. He worked hard to master his craft and took care of his troops.

He became a master of the reverse-slope tactic which he would use later at Waterloo. He kept his forces screened from artillery fire behind the brow of a hill. He probably realized early on that dead soldiers do not achieve victory.

He won several important battles in India and then, in 1805, returned to England. In 1808, he arrived in Portugal which was occupied by the French. He soon began a series of victories and, when given sole command, launched the Peninsular war which was to drive Napoleon’s armies from Portugal and Spain by 1814.

The French had seemed unbeatable until Wellesley took them on. In 1808 he had told a friend that he would not be chased off the continent as so many other similar forces had been, because he had made a study of French tactics, and would not be intimidated by their reputation.

They may overwhelm me but I don’t think they will outmanoeuvre me. First, because I am not afraid of them, as everybody else seems to be; and secondly, because if what I hear of their system of manoeuvre is true, I think it a false one against steady troops. I suspect that all the continental armies were more than half beaten before the battle was begun - I, at least, will not be frightened beforehand.’

Wellington knew how to stand steady in the face of a fearsome attack and he instilled the same spirit into his troops. Cool, steady, courage is a major factor in most success stories. Too many people are beaten by their own lack of self-confidence before they even start. If they do start and run into problems they panic and panic leads quickly to failure.

Wellington was called several affectionate names by his troops such as Old Hookey (he had a prominent nose), Our Atty (Arthur) and the Bugger that Beats the French. He had words for them too which show his contempt for the run away fathers and petty criminals who made up a part of his army. However, his words also show his laconic sense of humour.

Before the battle of Waterloo, it is said that Wellington said of his own troops This army is composed of the scum of the earth, I don’t know what effect these men will have on the enemy, but by God they terrify me!

During the five years of the Peninsular war, he did not take one day’s leave. His work ethic was huge - another mark of successful people. He campaigned backwards and forwards across Portugal and Spain.

He was occasionally forced to retreat because of the large numbers opposing him, but never lost a battle or even a single cannon. He was almost always outnumbered by the large French forces that were occupying Spain.

There followed a one step forward, one step back style of campaign that kept Wellington one step ahead of his often numerically superior enemies.

When in doubt about his army’s ability to defeat larger enemy forces he would retire to his strong defensive network - the Lines of Torres Vedras. His tactical skill proved itself again and again. Wellington, like most other successful people, developed his skills constantly and was careful not to bite off more than he could chew.

The leadership Wellesley showed in the Peninsular campaign was legendary. He expected the best from his men but was also a harsh disciplinarian. He hanged looters. He valued the help of his Portuguese and Spanish allies too much to allow thieves to alienate them. Yet his troops knew that he never risked their lives in battle without good cause.

After driving the French from the Peninsula, Wellington pushed on into France itself until Napoleon, pressed by Wellington in the south and the Prussian, Russian and Austrian allies in the north, was forced to abdicate in 1814.

Wellington was praised as the hero of Europe, but peace did not last long. In March of 1815, Napoleon escaped from his exile on the island of Elba and once again threatened Europe.

Arthur Wellesley was now made the first Duke of Wellington and marched his troops into Belgium where Napoleon had gathered his army.

At a place called Waterloo the French and British armies met for what was to be the final battle. The allies of the British like the Prussians, Belgians and the Dutch should not be forgotten. They played a large part in the victory.

Wellington, himself, was everywhere on the field of battle encouraging his men and holding them steady against the legendary French army and their great general, Napoleon.

Wellington said of him that his presence on the battle field was worth 40,000 men. The same could have been said of Wellington himself.

Wellington eventually inflicted an overwhelming defeat on Napoleon, but the victory cost a large number of lives. Wellington had become known as the ‘Iron Duke’ by his men but even he wept when he learned of the numbers of men who had lost their lives on that day.

The British had suffered 15,000 casualties and the French 40,000. Waterloo was to be Wellington’s last battle. He returned to England and resumed a political career begun many years before. He eventually became Prime Minister in 1828.

He was not popular as a politician and once had to fight a duel with one of his political opponents - Lord Winchelsea. However, both men wisely aimed to miss and honour was satisfied!

The Duke was not a man to be dominated or threatened by anyone. Unlike Prince Charles, he was not too worried about his private writings being made public. He made a famous reply to a rejected mistress, who threatened to publish the love-letters he had written to her: Publish and be damned!

Queen Victoria consulted him frequently. She asked his advice about how to deal with sparrows which had nested on the roof of the Crystal Palace. Wellington’s reply was brief and to the point, Sparrow-hawks, Ma,am . He was right. The sparrows were soon gone!

In one of my favourite films Waterloo , the Duke was asked what his plans were in case he was killed. The Duke replied: To beat the French!

He was a man of action and few words although he did in fact plan very carefully and took great care to choose the right ground for his battles. Success demands both action and planning.

Wellington made many mistakes in his life and career but his ability to achieve success shines out above them all. He refused to accept the valuation placed on him by his own mother. He focused all his efforts on his chosen career and mastered the skills necessary to succeed in it.

He used leverage when it was offered. He was not intimidated by the reputation of the French at that time and had the courage and confidence to face up to his military, political and private enemies. He knew how to plan and how to act. He was a great leader who led by example.

As a public figure Wellington remained a respected leader until his death in 1852. He was offered a cup of tea on his deathbed. His polite reply - ‘Yes, if you please’ - were his last words on earth.

Wellington died at Walmer Castle in Kent in 1852 and was given the honour of a State Funeral. It was a magnificent tribute to a great military hero. The Duke is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral next to another great hero, Lord Nelson.

If you are ever in London, try to visit the Duke’s house and the awesome statues to the south east of Hyde Park. I love gazing at these statues. They give a sense of Wellington’s greatness and the courage of his ’steady’ troops.

Write Your Own E-Book - The Easy Way

Ever wanted to write your own e-book but don’t know where to start; don’t know how to write a book; hated English when you were at school? Read on and I will show you how to create your own e- book and have your name as author and only have to write 4 or 5 paragraphs yourself, something anybody can do

Still with me, right lets get started.

What we are going to do is, using other peoples hard work, create an e-book that will sell like hot cakes. This sounds too good to be true, I know but stay with me. This method is one used by some of the top selling publishers on the internet, to create products time after time.

In another article, ‘Researching Your Niche - How Hard Can It Be?’, I showed you how to find niche e-book ideas in article directories. Today we’re going to use the content in them to create e- books.

Web site owners use Article Directories to submit their articles they have written so they get free publicity for their web sites. At the end of each article is a link back to their web site with a bit of information about their site. These site owners want people to take that article and market it to others so they get visitors to their site with out spending any money on marketing themselves. This is perfect for savvy entrepreneurs who are willing to spend a few hours of their time in order to profit for many years.

Go to www.goarticles.com or any other article directory, and type in the topic of the niche you want to write about in the search bar at the top right (make sure it’s on article content rather than search by author). So for example type in gardening . You’ll get thousands of result related to what you have searched for. Now what I want you to do is simply go through the results finding at least one hundred quality articles related to the topic of gardening and copy and paste them into Word or some kind of word processing application.

As I’ve said make sure they are quality articles. If you create an e-book using rubbish you’ll just get a sky high refund rate and it will all be a pointless exercise. Do it right from the off and you’ll set yourself up for success.

Try and tie all the articles together into one sub niche. For example a sub niche of gardening might be composting. So you could find articles on composting left over food, what plants not to compost that kind of thing. Use a bit of imagination when using this method.

Email Article Authors

You don’t want to use any articles without the author’s permission. Remember the majority of articles will have been submitted so the author can get visitors to their site without spending a dime. However you never want to breach any copyright laws. To avoid this email the authors of each article. Explain to them that you are creating an e-book aimed at their niche market. You’d love to include their article in your book and you’ll include a link back to their site and information about them. Also ask them if they have any other articles you could include.

You can expect around seventy percent of authors you contact to be delighted you’re going to include their article in your book. Then all you need to do is discard the articles from authors who you haven’t heard from or who won’t let you use their article.

Put the articles in an order that makes sense and create a contents page. Use the titles of the articles as contents topics. You could even create chapters aimed at solving certain problems people in your niche have. So for example if you were creating an e-book on golf you could create a section on improving your golf swing, a section on the mind game of golf and so on. All articles would make up separate chapters.

Finally write a short introduction and conclusion. These only need to be a few paragraphs each. Tell people what they can expect to learn and make sure you sign off using your name. Instantly you will establish yourself as an expert. You can also link to your back end products at the end of the book to increase your sales.

Finally you need to turn it into an e-book to sell. Go to www.primopdf.com and download the software. Don’t worry it’s free. Once downloaded all you need to do is in your word software hit file and then print and then select primo PDF as your printer. Voila. You’ve just created an e- book using other people’s hard work. This whole process can be done in just a few hours. Obviously you may need to wait a day or two for the article authors to get back to you but apart from that you’re all set! Anyone can use this method to create more e-books than you’d ever be able to sell.

That’s a great method right? I mean it won’t cost you anything to create a product yet you could sell hundreds if not thousands of copies and keep all the profits using other people’s hard work!

A Trip Down Memory Lane: The Sugarless Candy Store

As a young child often one’s fondest memory is entering the candy store or the candy aisle of a grocery store. Bright colored packages abound. The choices seem to be endless.

In Vermont, there are towns with true old fashioned candy stores. Wood plank flooring, maybe a scattering of saw dust, even the occasional pickle barrel! A delightful world filled with choices and choices and choices.

Would it suprise you to find out that the number one choice of candy and candy flavors is not chocolate, but… vanilla! It’s true as unbelievable as it sounds.

Think of all the possibilities staring a child literal face to face since many counters are conveniently put at not adult height, but child hand height. There’s a reason for this, ye old marketing tactic!

Imagine now a candy store counter, child and adult height, filled not with sugar-laden, teeth-decaying, calorie-engourging sweets, but your choice of the finest in sugarless candy and chocolate selections. Is this the dream of a sci-fi movie? No it is not. Nowadays we do have choices - and as time evolves (and rapidly) those choices are ensuring our choice of sugarfree or sugarless no longer means having to accept unappealing flavors and the byproducts of the sugarless product. Sweetners are making huge headway. Consumers can find delight in allowing themselves to choose sugarless candy based on pure taste alone. For those that begrudgingly have chosen the sugarfree sweet while gazing longingly at fat-inducing fancies have the satisfaction of full flavor without the rapid waistline growth.

All sorts of artificial sweetners are available on the market today. Unfortunately behind-the-scenes knowledge of these sweetners are never fully revealed to the public. You are most likely aware of just how many articifical sweetners never hold up and are pulled from grocery shelves. Sugar alcohols, the next step beyond, actually build in the blood and, for many, produce unfortunate (and embarassing) side effects.

Watching our waistlines means researching into the best healthy snack choices for ourselves. Read labels, make wise decisions.

Small Business Marketing: Risk Reversal Will Sky Rocket Your Sales

One of the top obstacles that you have to get over is the prospect’s sensation that they are at risk when buying from you. The more they feel that they are at risk, the larger will be their reluctance to buy.

To get over this hurdle, you need to reserve the sense of risk. You must assume the risk yourself.

Have you ever considered how many businesses transfer the built-in risks of conducting such a business to the customer?

Well, the following is a classic model of how this is done currently:

Recently, I went into a store to buy a anniversary present for a friend. I saw a sign on the wall behind the cash counter that said Absolutely no refund after 7 days and I thought to myself, How negative is that? It sounded so severe and foreboding, even threatening.

I was wondering why these people would want to lessen their customer’s goodwill by stating the policy in such a negative way and risk turning off even one customer. Especially, when the very same message could have been stated in a much more favorable way and help to make lasting customer relationships. For example, the same line on the store’s return policy could have read, We will gladly refund your full purchase price within 7 days.

The difference:

I am sure the difference in the two approaches is quite obvious. In the first statement, it is implied that the customer has to bear the burden of responsibility while the second statement indicates that the store management is willing to go out of his or her way to help the customer.

The above example is only a small one with perhaps only a minor negligible effect on sales, but the idea is not to state things in a negative fashion when there is a much better and more positive way of saying the same thing.

Your risk, your gain:

The wide range of anti-customer policies employed by various businesses never ceases to amaze me. The point that they all miss here is that, if you believe you have a sound product or service, then you should leave no stone unturned in advertising it to your customers.

For example:

Our prices are the lowest in town or we’ll refund double the difference or If we don’t have your size in stock, we’ll make a special order and have it here within two days or Marketing that gets you results or it costs you zilch, nada, zero.

All of the above statements have a powerful and positive psychological impact on the mind of the customer. If you can perform, you must make sure you let people know. If you were the gift shop owner, as in the earlier example, you may get a few returns and refund requests to begin with, but those will be of no consequence at all compared to all the new business you will be getting just by thinking smart and communicating right.

As a matter of fact, studies have generally found that with product guraantees, the longer the guarantee period, the fewer returns. The longer guarantee gives the customer a sense that you really believe in your product.

Take for example an information product. If a customer has not had a chance to really get into the product and consume the information provided within the guarantee period, they may decide to return simply because they haven’t had the time to satisfy themselfves that the information is really useful to them.

On the other hand, if the guarantee is for a year, then they don’t feel rushed and if they never get to the product and it sits on the shelf unopened, they will have long forgotten all about it and the guarantee when the deadline comes up.

Taking the risk on yourself is good for your business.

When is Music Learning Software Good, And When Is It Bad?

With the advent of computers there has been a proliferation of software purporting to do just about every learning task the modern guitar learner could ever want to accomplish. For example, I have a piece of software I picked up somewhere that would show you every inversion of every chord on the fretboard from any root.

There are drum machines, there are recorders, there are a million other ones that are not directly linked to learning guitar, but they never-the-less contrtibute to the completeness, or the more holistic processes of becoming a well-balanced creative. These are linked to learning in very direct ways, though they are not learning software, per se.

You could even consider an electronic brochure, book, pamphlet, or monograph a piece of learning software. It serves the same function.

When are these numerous directions each of these leads in worth pursuing, and when not? When is music learning software good, and what makes it bad?

It is all very subjective, and leads directly to the learner. The question is not always when is it good, and when is it bad. Sometimes it is best put by asking what can I get from this that I couldn’t get elsewhere?

For example, the first example I gave of software that shows the chords on the guitar, this can give a person a grasp on how much work is involved, or help looking up a particular inversion, or voicing.

However, this software can be counter-productive in that it may stifle the student from learning to analyze chordal structures, and build these, from the students own memory. Also, what is a person to do with all these chords?

This is after all a very graspable subject. There is a tried and true method for obtaining this knowledge, so that the creative guitarist can draw on it in the moment and use it in their actual playing. So in this case, this software can actually stifle learning.

The bottom line, the learner has to be responsible for their own learning, and not get bogged down in techniques, software, learning methods. Just grab it and use it is the practical solution whenever confronted with new knowledge apllicable to creative gutiar playing.

Whenever faced with mutliple choices, I always try to explore the ends to which each of these leads. Knowledge-wise, this means pursuing as many learning angles as possible. The guitar is very conducive to this in that it is very logical, precise, learnable. It is not infinite after all. Quite the contrary. There are 12 notes. It is a huge system, but far from infinite.

It is like chess in some ways, there are a million moves, but only a few are really meanigful. Creativity, and the guitar, and songcraft, and are all very simple subjects when you get to the really important, big picture synthesis of it all.

In the meantime, just be aware in your learning that there is a way to grasp the most important, big picture, top-down knowledge apllicable to creative guitar. It is found in the Creative Guitar Mastery series of learning. This is my personal guarantee - that any of the knowledge you get from the series will enrich your playing in ways you will be thanking us for years to come! Or I will refund your money, no questions asked!
