It’s happened to me. About a year ago, someone got a hold of my bank card numbers. Fortunately, the crook made some international purchase which immediately clued me in and my bank was quick to settle the whole thing. But most people aren’t so lucky. Identity theft is a serious crime that’s growing each year. Victims of identity theft can spend months, or even years, trying to repair a ruined credit history, which can compromise your chances of getting a new job, a bank loan, insurance or even rental housing. Follow these steps to help keep your identity safe:

Protect Your Credit Card Number When Making Purchases

Check your receipts after making a purchase with your credit or debit card. In most cases, the printed receipt hides all but the last 4 digits of your credit card account number, but some terminals still print receipts that show all 16 digits of your account number and the expiration date. If you get one of these receipts, black out the numbers entirely before throwing it away - this is all the information a thief needs to make charges using your card. You’re also permitted by law to hide the first 12 digits of your account number on any copies of the receipt that the seller keeps.

It’s especially important to keep tabs on your receipts at restaurants. Think about it - you pay for your meal and then leave the signed receipt on your table for the waiter to pick up. But in a busy restaurant, it’s easy for a potential thief to “accidentally” bump your receipt off the table (or just steal it) and get your information. If the restaurant’s receipt shows all of your account information, black out the first 12 digits of your credit card number before leaving the restaurant.

Do You Really Need To Give Your Social Security Number?

Be very stringent about who you give your social security number to. You’ll probably need to share your number when you apply for credit or for a bank account, but sometimes a store or an organization will want to use it as an ID number, simply to identify you within their system. This is not only dangerous - it’s illegal. The law says that social security numbers aren’t to be used as ID numbers. If you’re ever unsure about giving out your social security number, ask if there’s an alternative - there is in most cases.

Destroy Documents That Contain Sensitive Personal Information

Buy a paper shredder and use it to destroy any documents that contain credit card numbers, social security numbers, phone numbers, your date of birth and any other personal information before throwing them away. Any credit card offers should also be shredded - thieves can fill out the applications and open a line of credit without you ever knowing. Don’t think that throwing out these documents is enough - identity thieves aren’t above going through the trash to find information that can help them get credit in your name.

If The Worst Happens

If you do become a victim of identity theft, take the following steps immediately:

* Contact your credit card companies to let them know what’s going on, close your accounts and ask to have new cards issued to you.

* Place a fraud alert on your file with any one of the three major credit bureaus. The other two will be notified automatically.

* File a police report. You may need it to show to creditors as proof of the crime.

* File a complaint with the FTC, which maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for their investigations.

It’s not fun to think about identity theft, but in this age of technology, you can’t afford not to. Identity thieves get smarter every day - just think of the recent rash of companies announcing that their client databases have been hacked into, exposing personal information. Some things are out of your control, but there are some simple precautions you can take to keep your personal information secured. Keeping your identity safe may be one of the most important things you do for your financial future.

The Care Industry Still Needs Foreign Workers

As Home Secretary John Reid ponders over whether or not to admit thousands of Romanian and Bulgarian workers next year, we ask what the Government is doing to help the private care sector to solve continuing staff shortages.

Last week, in a reaction to mounting public anxiety over immigration, Mr Reid has effectively called for official limits on the numbers coming into Britain. He hinted that a new body could be set up to advise the government on optimum levels of immigration consistent with the country’s economic needs and social stability .

This is a major shift in policy by a government which previously welcomed immigration and talked of the “economic benefits” migrants bring to Britain.

The announcement follows news of a leaked Home Office report revealing deep concerns over the rising numbers of immigrants coming in from new EU countries in Eastern Europe.

“People recognise that others from outside this country can bring great skills here, but they also want to be assured that our services, whether it’s schools or hospitals, and indeed their own terms and conditions, will be preserved and immigration will be managed,” Reid said on a news discussion program on the BBC.

John Reid is widely expected to impose restrictions on ‘free movement of labour’ from Romania and Bulgaria, following the large migration of workers from Eastern Europe since 2004. Britain was one of only three countries to allow people from the 10 new member states to migrate.

Original estimates of 13000 new arrivals in the first year were probably exceeded in the first week and the numbers have since risen to over 600,000 prompting fears that we are being overrun. The vast majority of the new arrivals are in full time work.

In a BBC interview yesterday Home Office Minister Tony McNulty admitted that the Government had been “in the dark” when it estimated how many workers would come to the UK from the expanded EU.

Whilst the care industry may have benefited from the increased availability of labour from countries like Poland and Latvia, many employers have reported that the benefits have been short lived as they freely move from job to job. Workers from the new EU member states do not need work permits and have the same choices as the resident workforce. In other words they can also opt for an easier life and more money working for a local supermarket, commonly known as the Tesco Factor .

“Eastern European workers have not solved our staffing problems” Home Owner

Other care home owners and managers have also told me that Polish and other Eastern European workers have not solved their staffing problems. A care home owner who preferred not to be named told me that the Polish carers he recruited do not stay in the job very long.

“We put a lot of time and effort into the recruitment, training and induction process, as well as helping them get settled, only to find that as soon as they’ve got their bearings they’re off to find higher paid jobs”.

To make matters worse, the Government are constantly making life difficult for anyone trying to bring in staff from outside the EU. Even renewing a work permit has become a minefield where one wrong move can lead to disastrous consequences.

We have recently taken over an immigration case where a new care home owner applied for a work permit extension for a Senior Carer from the Philippines. The Home Office refused the application due to a mistake on the job title and will not change their decision. The applicant’s visa was about to expire and had we not rescued the situation she would have been sent home along with her husband a son.

It beggars belief that the very people this country needs to attract, skilled people willing and able to do the jobs nobody else seems to want to do, are being victimised and run out of the country.

Employers are also in for a tougher time and will soon be required to take on more responsibility for their overseas staff and face sanctions and heavy fines if things go wrong. See www.immigrationmatters.co.uk.

Other sectors, like the catering industry, are also suffering from staff shortages. However, unlike restaurants or hotels, care homes face the ultimate threat closure if they fail to meet strict staffing criteria. Dame Denise Platt, Chair of the CSCI, has warned that “staff shortages are putting patients at risk”.

The Government seems to base their immigration decisions solely on the needs of the NHS

The Government recently decided that the NHS has sufficient numbers of ‘home grown’ Nurses, and brought in sweeping changes completely ignoring the needs of the private sector.

General Nurses, (the ones most needed in Care Homes) were taken off the “official” shortage list on 14th August, despite the fact that Nurses are still in short supply in the private sector. Employers will now have to go through the resident labour test in order to obtain a work permit for an overseas nurse.

I carried out a quick search on the Job Centre Plus website today and found 2144 nursing vacancies for jobs paying up to £24000 per annum. The Nursing Times website boasts “Thousands of UK Nursing Jobs” and I dare say that local newspapers all over the UK carry dozens of Care Home’s advertisements for Nursing jobs.

There are also over 7000 vacancies for Care Assistants listed on the Job Centre site and yet the Government still refuses to acknowledge that it should be listed a shortage occupation.

Senior Carer work permits have become more difficult to obtain in recent years and visas for work permit holders are regularly refused. This Monday I attended yet another hearing at the appeals tribunal (AIT) to help fight the case of a Senior Carer wrongfully refused a visa by the British Embassy in Manila. Fortunately the judge agreed with us and allowed the appeal on the spot.

The NHS may not have a staff shortage, but the private sector still finds it difficult to recruit good quality staff locally and has no choice but to look overseas.

In my experience, the only place where you will find large numbers of highly qualified English speaking care staff, who will stay for the long run, is in countries like India and The Philippines.

Employers must be allowed to choose where best to find the staff they need to give them and their resident’s longer term stability.

Hey even I’m willing to learn new things if there’s a broiled lobster in it for me.

When I’m hungry that is.

If I’m not hungry, or if I’m so distracted that a lobster won’t tempt me, then I’ll blow you off to continue doing what I want, not what you want.

That’s pretty much how your dog sees the issue when you train with food. If he’s hungry at the moment, and if there’s nothing more compelling going on, food can be a great way to reinforce behaviors you teach your dog. On the other hand, if Fido isn’t food motivated, or if he’s got something “better” to do, he won’t be interested.

Nonetheless, training with food has its benefits when used as a motivator and a reward. For those dogs who just aren’t normally interested in treats, you can substitute play with a toy if that motivates them.

The first thing you have to know about using food in training is how NOT to use it. The primary rule is not to use it to stop an unwanted behavior. Instead, use it to create a new behavior you want to teach.

With those rules in mind, you won’t teach your dog to stop growling at other dogs by using food. But you may be able to teach him to sit more quickly if there’s something tasty in it for him.

Before I tell how you to deliver food treats when training, let me tell you WHY you should not use food to try and stop an unwanted behavior. The answer is because you can accidentally reinforce the very behavior you’re trying to stop.

For example, let’s say Fido growls at other dogs on his walks. If you tell him to stop growling, and distract him with a treat, what has he really learned?

Here’s what YOU’RE thinking…he stopped growling so I rewarded him for that with a cookie. He won’t growl again.

Here’s what FIDO is thinking…this is cool, I growl, then mom pops me a cookie. Let’s see if this works…let’s growl more!

Think of food as a directional reward. How, when and where you deliver it all determine whether the treat teaches your dog what you intended, or something else altogether. For example, you tell Fido to sit, and you hold a treat six inches over his head, while pushing down on his butt.

Sound about right? Wrong! By holding that treat six inches over his head, you’re really teaching Fido to sit then immediately break that position in favor of jumping up to get the cookie.

Instead, start Fido standing on a closely held leash. Show him you have a cookie, by holding it at nose level-only an inch from his sniffer– while he’s standing up. Direct his attention, and nose, slightly higher by raising the cookie only enough so that he must tend toward a sit to view it. While he’s focusing upward only a couple of inches over his nose, use your other hand to push his butt down, while your cookie hand keeps the treat only a couple of inches from his nose as it moves.

As soon as he is sitting, deliver the treat to him just slightly above nose level, and slightly toward his rear. This means that to collect the treat, Fido must actually lean back into the sit more to reach it.

Mission accomplished! Food hasn’t been just randomly delivered to your dog, leaving him wondering why he got it. Instead, the food has clearly communicated how he can get this treat even faster next time, by sitting when you ask.

Brenda Fassie, the legendary South African pop singer who sold millions of records across Africa and around the world, died in a Johannesburg hospital on May 9, 2004 after spending 13 days in a coma. The post-mortem said her final dose of cocaine was the cause of death. She was only 39 years old. MaBrrr, as she was affectionately nicknamed by her fans, had tried to resolve her severe addictions over the years at various treatment centers - in fact, more than 30 times - but, unfortunately for MaBrrr and her millions of admirers, she never found a truly successful drug rehab program.

Fassie, the youngest of nine kids, was named after Brenda Lee, the American singer. Her pianist mother let her earn money by singing for tourists in the streets. In 1981 at 16, Fassie left Cape Town to seek her fortune as a singer in Johannesburg’s Soweto district. Soweto, short for “South West Townships”, had long been under the grinding heel of South Africa’s white supremacist apartheid policy. Poverty, drugs, alcohol, prostitution, illness and crime were rampant, and drug rehab facilities as we know them today were virtually unknown. But there was art, there was music, there were night clubs to sing in and a vibrant culture was being created by Soweto’s people. Nelson Mandela lived there for years, as did Bishop Desmond Tutu and other famous black South Africans.

Five years before Fassie arrived, Soweto police opened fire on 10,000 protesting students marching peacefully from Naledi High School to Orlando Stadium. In the events that unfolded, 566 people died. The impact of the Soweto Uprising, as it became known, reverberated throughout the country and around the world. Soweto became the stage for violent state repression and the roaring social and political oven in which Fassie forged the direction of her music - by the mid-’90s, she was the unequivocal voice of black oppression. But she had also formed a drug addiction so strong that it managed to resist one treatment program after another. Without access to a real drug rehab, Fassie was unable to break the habit.

In 2001 Time magazine dubbed Fassie “The Madonna of the Townships” and indeed she was. Fassie managed to combine ground-breaking musical success with a personal accessibility and human fallibility that drew a fierce loyalty and protectiveness from fans. Her career was studded with record sales and awards, but punctuated also by periodic scandals, recurring battles with drug addiction, and lows in her musical career that saw her written off by the press.

On June 12, 2006, two years after her death, family and friends paid tribute to Fassie at the unveiling of a huge new tombstone at Cape Town’s Langa cemetery. Wreaths from former president Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki - who had both visited her in the hospital where she lay in a coma - were placed on the family grave where Fassie was buried with her mother and father. The family is planning a museum in her honor, where her music and other memorabilia will be displayed. And perhaps most significant is the planned Brenda Fassie Foundation that would financially assist young drug addicts in need of a successful drug rehab program.

The place is hot and steamy, pulsing with the beat of blaring music and gyrating bodies. You see her working it across the crowded floor, and you have to meet her. A brilliant idea: you’ll buy her a drink. But wait a second - that only works in night clubs, and you’re at a health club. So while you could send a 20 oz. Tropical Xtremo Gatorade her way, that probably won’t produce the intended result, no matter how important it is to replenish fluids during strenuous exercise. What do you do?

Gyms notoriously attract eye-catching people. There’s no greater concentration of sinewy muscles and tight, skimpy clothing anywhere… except maybe the adult thriller section of your local Blockbuster Video. Let’s face it, even the most average-looking gym-goer is fit and healthy, or at least will be in a few months. But while fitness clubs are a veritable bakery of available beefcakes and beefcakettes, they can actually be rather tricky places to meet people. Gyms are often chock full of cheesy pick-up artists with sleazy come-ons, or, on the other side, designer gear-wearing posers who walk around a whole lot and manage to lift very little.

But there has to be some way for normal people to meet other normal people at the gym, right? The simple answer is yes, but not without keeping several things in mind - especially if your idea of a good opening line is something like “Nice shoes, wanna french?”

Listen up, all you muscle-bound Casanovas out there: no matter how eager you are to begin the mating… er, dating process, you’ve got to scope out the scene. Some gyms are as flirty as all-you-can drink “body shot nite” at Club Med. Others, well, you’d probably have better luck cruising a Buddhist monastery. Look around. Are people talking… with each other… and not asking whether they can “work-in”? If that’s the case, fire up conversations at will (we’ll cover what to say shortly). But if the atmosphere is more businesslike, it’s probably best to keep minding your own. Unsolicited banter, no matter how witty, can stick out worse than a left elbow during assisted tricep dips.

Next, and most importantly: you can check someone out, just don’t freak them out. It’s one thing to sneak a peek while she’s sprawled on the stretching mat, but quite another to train your penetrating gaze on her (no matter how amazing her side crunch technique might be). Among the women I’ve spoken to, the consensus is clear. One or two quick glances, and maybe even a little smile, are flattering; prolonged staring, drooling, or high-fiving your equally lecherous friends, is not. Of course, even the strongest exhibit occasional weakness - if you absolutely can’t help it, use the gym’s mirrors for a far less detectable stare. (This technique can also give you a better view of, shall we say, the traditionally hidden parts of an alluring physique.)

You’ve spotted someone on the lat machine, you’ve used the mirror, and you like what you see. You’re ready to make your move, right? Hold on there, tough guy. The next step is recognizing her receptiveness. Just as exercise is a social experience, it can also be solitary and serious. Some people just want to get in and get out as quickly as possible. This is especially true at gyms where members squeeze workouts into hectic appointment schedules, or even before the workday begins. People probably aren’t looking for romance in the midst of the daily grind, and while your hormones might be awake at 6:00 a.m., it’s unlikely that someone who gets up while it’s still dark wants to meet anyone, aside from the coffee stand guy.

Same can be said of those who hit the gym after work - chances are they just want to exercise, go home, and eat a salad. If some meathead wearing zebra-print Zubaz pants impedes that progress, do you think he’ll get that number (the real one)? She might have caught your eye, but you can’t assume the feeling is mutual unless she sees you and smiles back. Even then, wait an extra minute, just to make sure she’s not there with her championship kick-boxer boyfriend, who’d be more than happy to use your face as a leather focus mitt.

When it comes to opening lines, we all have our stand-bys. But at the gym, inspired pick-ups like “Sagittarius, right?,” “I’m on the football team,” and “please don’t call the cops” might not work as well. True, women’s reactions vary, depending largely on delivery, making it tough to say what to say. But there are definitely techniques to avoid. Worst offender? The old “let me show you how to do that” maneuver. We’ve all seen this move in action, and might even be guilty of trying it (listen up, personal trainers). There’s nothing wrong with correcting someone’s form - unless it’s used as a pretext to ogle her body at close range, or, worse, place an “instructive” hand on it.

Most men don’t mind a stranger’s touch (and probably fantasize about it), but women like it about as much as filthy bathrooms, back hair, and spitting contests. Here’s something else they hate: guys who comment on how stretchy they are. Yes, women are flexible, and flexibility is awesome - just ask Emoke Ritter, world-famous Hungarian contortionist (you’ve never heard of her?). Women understand they can bend in ways that stir the male imagination - spare yourself the embarrassment of mentioning it.

The last thing a woman wants to hear from a stranger, unless you’re Leonardo DiCaprio, is “boy are you flexible.” Same goes for “great muscle tone,” “killer pecs,” or “nice ass.” Keep the focus off her body, at least out loud. Ok, so it’s not that formal, but in order to diffuse the drag-a-way girl’s powers, you need to understand why she creates all this madness in the first place.

Women want sex. They love sex; probably more than we do. Left to their own devices, they’d probably be having sex all the time. Who wouldn’t be tempted, with attractive people hitting on them left and right?

The problem is that there are social and personal ramifications for women who are promiscuous. They are called “sluts,” and can feel “dirty,” afterwards. In fact, women will often explicitly ask each other to cockblock for them and make sure they don’t give their numbers out or go home with a guy. This is taken so far that when a girl does actually decide she wants to get laid, she’ll have to go out of her way to tell her friends not to block, just so she can act how she normally would without societal restrictions.

Of course, there are other reasons why girls drag their friends away from potential suitors. One reason could be that she is simply jealous and hating on her friend for getting hit on all the time. If a girl is overweight or unattractive in general, this is probably the main reason.

How do we solve this? The solution is simple.

As soon as the friend comes, engage her and bring her into the conversation. This will bring her into the new world you two share, instead of snapping your lady back into the other world she shares with her girlfriend. The three of you will be talking about how cool your trip to Maui was, instead of their dinner plans on their big night out next week - without you, of course. You need to stay prominent in your honey’s universe, and for that moment, lower her friend from a focal point to just a guest in the vibe that you two share.

If you do this early enough, and hold a strong frame, her friend will notice that you two are getting along, and just might respect that. What will more likely happen, though, is that she’ll still try to make an attempt to drag her friend away by saying “We’re going to go dance,” but it will be noticeably weaker. She’ll speak more softly, and her voice may quiver. Because her friend has a weaker frame than you, you will win. She just won’t sound as cool as you, and will be turned down. Your girl will just reply “I’m good,” and nod for her to go away. You may not even be able to tell that the drag-away girl has lost her confidence in her control of her friend, but it’s there if you look for it.

Now sometimes you won’t be able to the engage the friend before she tries to pull your object of interest away. She might just show up and say “We gotta go dance…now!” before you can even make eye contact with her. This situation is actually a lot easier than you would expect. Pat the drag-a-way girl on the shoulder and say, “You’re cool, you’re cool,” then turn to face your girl and resume conversation. The friend will be confused and will lose power as she stands there as you two talk. Whoever is standing on the edge, boxed out, looks less and less cool with each passing second.

She will try to reinitiate and move your lady away. Do the same thing again: pat her on the shoulder and quickly say, “You’re cool, you’re cool.” Turn your body completely to face your girl again and resume conversation. It’s as easy as shampooing your hair: Wash, rinse, repeat. You can do this over and over again until the friend just leaves; and believe me, she will leave.

In short, don’t get too reactive when an obstacle like the drag-away girl crosses your path. Be friendly if you can; and if not, blow her out of the interaction.
