The Most Overacting Actors: Take a Little Drama Off The Top

There are people in life who are exceptional actors, actors who could make you believe just about anything. Then, there are actors who aren’t necessarily horrible, but their tendency to overact makes them about as believable as the Easter Bunny. Take myself, for instance, I am an overactor. I can’t appear in front of an audience without overacting. I can’t even stretch the truth without being completely dramatic. For me, it’s a shame: I like to be on stage….and I really like to lie.

I am not alone in my tendency to overact. Our television and movie screens are filled with overacting men and women (and sometimes dogs (seriously Benji, let’s tone down the whimpering)), overacting actors who take drama and make it a little too dramatic. The following is our list for the Most Overacting Actors, those who need a script for a chill pill.

David Caruso, CSI: David Caruso was good on NYPD Blue (good for all five minutes he was a cast member), but there is just something about his role in CSI that makes me want to slip him a Xanaz. With his deep voice, perpetually sunglassed face, and a tendency to speak a little too slowly and articulate a little too much, Caruso makes CSI raise the intensity level. But, then again, maybe that’s the point.

Vincent D’Onofrio, Criminal Intent: Like David Caruso, I have really liked Vincent D’Onofrio in his previous work (Mystic Pizza forever, Vinnie), but he maintains a very obscure quality on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. In scenes where he is undercover as a married man, he comes across as gay, in scenes where he is supposed to pretend he is on the criminal’s side, he comes across as patronizing, and in scenes where he is supposed to be happy…well, frankly, ya just can’t tell. He nearly appears to be one emotion, all the time.

Tom Cruise: Hopefully, he can handle the truth. It isn’t that I think Tom Cruise is horrible at acting, he just doesn’t make certain roles all that believable. Well, that and he plays seemingly the same guy in most of his films. He’s fine in movies like Top Gun or Risky Business (i.e., movies where he just needs to smile pretty for the camera), but could he pull off a role like Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman? No way. Oh well, at least he always has Scientology to fall back on…or whatever.

William Shatner, Star Trek: Though I absolutely love him in Boston Legal, he makes this list for his role in Star Trek. Sorry Willie, you’ve been beamed up. In this science fiction series, he became known for narration laden in drama and odd, long pauses………………….yes, kind of like that. Though this overacting is often parodied, you have to give Shatner credit: his acting style thrives in comedic roles and he looks pretty darn good for his age.

Keanu Reeves: First of all, let me apologize to all the Bill and Ted lovers out there. You’re right, that movie was, in a word, excellent. In fact, I believe that was one of Keanu’s best jobs as an actor. I don’t assert this because he gave a heartfelt performance or because the role he played was on par with Jack Nicholson’s Randle Patrick McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I say this instead because it was one role where he wasn’t overwhelmingly stoic; it was a role that made him real. Did we believe that he was a high school slacker about to be sent to military school? Yes. Did we believe he was the one who could save the human race from slavery? Uh, not really

Knit With Feeling

I love to knit. Not discounting the occasional cuss word when perfect is not achieved, I have to say I find it relaxing and knitting brings me peace.

That said, there was “The Sweater”.

I had picked out a sweet cabled cardigan for my then four year old granddaughter. Ashley has soft brown hair and a pixie look about her. When I looked at that pattern, I pictured her romping through fields of wild flowers with a gentle breeze blowing through her tumbling locks….get the picture?

I picked a steel blue yarn and settled into my rocker for a decent session of knitting. Armed with a cup of tea, I cast on the back of “The Sweater”. I will not go into the detail of the trials and tribulations of completing a sweater I know originated in the depths of hell. When I was too far into the project to even consider frogging it, I had faced typos, pattern errors and instructions that skipped entire sections of needed directions.

I tensed every time I even looked at the knitting bag that held that sweater. I found any excuse to start and knit to completion many other projects while “The Sweater” lay in wait. Christmas loomed. I NEEDED to get on with Ashley’s sweater. At this point all my other grandchildren had a finished sweater.

One morning as I was complaining to my daughter, Lori, about my ordeal, she chastised me for knitting bad thoughts and vibes into her niece’s gift.

That conversation got me to thinking. Knitting a gift for someone we love is as close to hugging them as we can get without actually enveloping them in our arms. Generally, as I knit on something for someone I love, I am filled with warmth and feelings of joy. I think that’s why we get so passionate about knitting. We are literally sharing a piece of ourselves with the recipient.

After that chat with Lori I decided to change my attitude about Ashley’s sweater. As I knit on it, I thought about how beautifully the pieces were fitting together, I patted myself on the back for overcoming a very poorly written pattern and creating a lovely sweater.

When I wrapped that sweater in tissue I actually caressed it before putting the box cover on. I loved that sweater.

I will never knit harsh thoughts into another gift for a cherished loved one. I will, good naturedly, approach each difficult step with positive thoughts and I will frog the sucker immediately if I feel one iota of negativity flowing from my fingers to that yarn!

Bullets Over Qualicum

Heritage Cottage in Qualicum, BC - Rich in Regional History

What do “Bullets” Johnson, Naval Commander Sunderland, Brigadier General Money, and I have in common? We’re all connected to Heritage Cottage in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, BC. Bullets was a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman who was wounded a dozen times or so in bank holdups and gun battles. He retired as an RCMP Superintendent and was one of the more colorful residents of Heritage Cottage. Brigadier General Noel Money was the original owner of the land Heritage Cottage is built on. Naval Commander Ian Sunderland and his wife Nancy owned the house during the 70’s. I stayed there for one memorable night recently. Thank goodness the bullets stopped flying over Qualicum Beach many years ago. The average age of Qualicum residents is currently 60 years, so Qualicum has grown up and calmed down.

Heritage Cottage and the lands around it are ripe with history and in the centre of Qualicum Beach. Hal and Jody Volger have incorporated the history of the cottage and the area as a theme for their B&B. The cottage has been restored true to the vintage of the home. It is decorated with a historical theme and showcases many antiques that reflect the history.

We arrive late in the afternoon. Hal and Jody greet us at the front door. They escort us to our room first, then provide us with a tour of the Bed and Breakfast and the beautiful grounds. It’s evident very early on that Hal and Jody are determined to set their B&B apart from others by paying special attention to the needs of their guests. They give new meaning to going the extra mile. Upon arriving we’d noticed two antique cars in the parking area. Hal uses them to pick up guests who arrive by train, bus, or plane! Bikes and fishing rods are available for guests to use. The rooms are full of special features and amenities, such as: gas fireplaces, under-floor radiant heating, double sound-proofing for extra privacy, private patios, cable TV, ensuite baths with soaker tubs and showers, fine linens, feather duvets, individual robes, and quality toiletries.

When we return from dinner, there are two glasses of sherry and Bernard Callebaut chocolates waiting for us. A carafe of ice water is also sitting on our table. Outside our room is a common area with comfy couches, a chess board set up and ready to go, fresh homemade baking, and self-serve drinks. Soft music is playing.

As someone who makes a living in tourism, I’m hard-pressed to think of anything that’s missing. There’s even a special space to set our luggage, room in the bathroom for our toiletries, lots of mirrors and other small touches - like fresh air spray in the bathroom and a Dixie cup dispenser. Each room also has a cute outside seating area.

We awake the next morning to the incredible aroma of breakfast cooking. When we arrive at the dining area, we see that our breakfast menu is posted on a quaint chalk board sitting on an easel. The breakfast is gourmet, delicious, and as special as the accommodations and hosting.

Jody is an excellent cook and we encourage her to complete the cook book she is working on. As breakfast unfolds, we get to know the other couple staying here, as well as their son. The experience of sharing breakfast with people from different places and different backgrounds is what Bed and Breakfasts are all about. It’s what sets B&B’s apart from other types of accommodations.

Hal and Judy demonstrate their knowledge of the area and direct us to places to eat, activities to take part in, and sites to see. Qualicum Beach is abundant with activities and attractions. Qualicum has lots of great walking trails and many are close to Heritage Cottage. There are also six golf courses in the area and on this trip we take advantage of one of the best, Arrowsmith Golf Course. We like it because it is executive length and the course doesn’t beat us up. It is well maintained and very scenic with Mount Arrowsmith as a backdrop. Qualicum is a golfer’s Mecca.

We leave Qualicum knowing that we have found one of the better B&B’s on Vancouver Island. My only disappointment is that I didn’t get to the Coombs Country Market for an ice cream cone and that I couldn’t have a drink with Bullets Johnson.

What To Look For When Buying A First Edition Used Book

What to look for when buying a First Edition used book.

What is a First Edition Book?

A First Edition book is a book that is the first printing of the first edition of a book. That does not mean the first book to be printed but the first run of books that are printed of a newly published book. There can be hundreds or more in each printing. To find a true First Edition in a used paperback book or used hardcover book can be very frustrating. But is worth the effort if you find the book you want. As time passes most used paperback books are thrown away so, a First Edition in used paperback books are rare. The same can be said for used hardcover books, they are generally discarded or they no longer have their dust jackets. The dust jackets are valuable when reselling/buying a used hardcover book. They have details on them that help determine the book’s origin. Here at www.booksatfarwest.com, I strive to state First Edition only when the book meets the following guidelines.

It is very hard to identify true First Editions most of the time. Below is a list of identifications that should appear on the copyright and/or title pages.

Wording-First Edition, First Printing, First Impression, First Published or Published

Take note that some publishers will state “First Printing by (publisher). This is not a First Edition but a first printing by a different publisher than original publisher.

Number line, it will look like this, 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 or 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

Usually the (1) should be on the number line. This indicates it is the 1st printing. If the 1 is missing that usually means that the book is a second printing. There are some publishers who remove the 1 when printing the first edition, Random House is one. If the 1 is missing and you are not sure of the publisher’s rules it is a good idea to consult a bibliography or guide to First Editions. The general rule is number line should have the (1).

Dates on copyright page and title page should agree.

The phrase, Copyright 1942, should be on the copyright page and on page where title is, usually at bottom, 1942. Sometimes there will be a year between the dates. This is not uncommon if book was copyright late in one year and published in the next year. Occasionally there will be more dates with the copyright date. This will occur when part of the book had been published in a journal or anthology. In this case the last date should agree with title page date. The rule for dates is they should be the same, the copyright and title page dates.

Undated Books, rare or vintage

Many of the older books will not have dates on them. This makes if even harder to determine a First Edition. You will need to use a bibliography or library guide to tell for sure. Some older books will have a date on the title page but no copyright date or visa versa. Book Club editions also have no corresponding dates. General rule is if dates are missing check with sources before buying. A good seller will state if book is a Book Club Edition. www.booksatfarwest.com http://www.booksatfarwest.com has listed vintage books that may have been First Editions, but I could not confirm it so they are sold as vintage books.

There are “sellers” selling book club books as First Editions. Sometimes it is hard to tell because of the era it was printed in. If you are interested in a certain book and want a First Edition do your homework before purchasing. Check out the title, book size, dates (if available,) publisher and the color of book cover all of these will help determine its status. Just because there is only one date on the book does not make it a First Edition.

I hope this information will be helpful for the new collector, when they go to purchase a used paperback book or used hardcover book that says it is a First Edition. Remember when buying a used paperback book or used hardcover book, to research or ask questions if you have doubts.

How to Attract the Love of Your Life

It’s very simple, but some people won’t believe it. If you want love from another, if you want the perfect mate, you first have to LOVE YOURSELF!!! The reason for this is that our thoughts attract to us exactly what we think we deserve. If we love ourselves, we will attract a good partner. If we don’t love ourselves, we will attract an unsuitable partner, perhaps an abuser. I know- I am a survivor of domestic violence, and I didn’t love myself until just a few years ago.

The Universe is governed by one great law-the Law of Attraction in the Thought World. You may have heard the saying “As above, so below!” Its manifestations are numerous. This law is as mighty as the sub-atomic force that holds atoms together, or the law of gravity that attracts bodies to the earth. This mighty law draws to us the things we desire or the things we fear; it makes or breaks our lives. There is a formless “thinking stuff” from which all things are made, and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. We can form things in our thoughts, and, by impressing our thoughts upon formless substance, we can cause the things we think about to be created. In order to do this, we must pass from the competitive to the creative mind. We must form a clear mental picture of the things we want, and hold this picture in our thoughts with the fixed PURPOSE to get what we want, and the unwavering FAITH that we will get what we want, closing our minds against all that may tend to shake our purpose, dim our vision, or quench our faith. In addition to all this, we shall now see that we must live and act in a certain way.

Thought is the only power that can produce tangible results-love, money, etc When we come to see that Thought is a force- a manifestation of energy having a magnet-like power of attraction, we will begin to understand the “Why” of many things that have previously remained hidden. We will understand the truth of something said to me by the owner of a diner- my first “boss”. “You get what you expect!” she said. Had I seen the wisdom of this as a 15 year old, my life could have been much different. Due to early conditioning, I had come to expect the worst in life. Most of the time, my worst fears were manifested, until I changed my thinking and my self-image.

If you are a “baby-boomer” like myself, you will remember a song by the Beach Boys that came out in the late 1960’s. It was called “Good Vibrations”. When we think, we send out vibrations of a fine ethereal substance. These vibrations are just as real as the vibrations (waves) of light, heat, electricity, TV and radio broadcasting frequencies, and magnetism that we take for granted. That these vibrations are not evident to our five senses is not proof that they do not exist. A powerful magnet will send out vibrations and exert a force sufficient to attract to itself a piece of steel weighing hundreds of pounds; but, we cannot see, hear, taste, feel or smell the mighty force. Likewise, these thought vibrations cannot be seen, felt, smelled, tasted or heard in the ordinary way; although it is true that some persons are very sensitive to psychic impressions and perceive these powerful thought-waves. Many people can truthfully say that they have felt the thought vibrations of others, both while in the presence of the sender and at a distance. Telepathy and its kindred phenomena are very real!

If you have read this far, you are seeking a way to make a permanent change in your life for the better. Perhaps you have been leading your life “under a dark cloud” of bad luck and misfortune. Maybe you have gone to bed crying or angry at the Universe, shaking your fist at the “Powers that Be” and saying “Why me? What did I do to deserve all this?”. You want to make a change. That change starts with the man or woman in the mirror- yourself. In order to change your negative thinking, you must get into the proper mindset To do this, you must do three things, and do them whole-heartedly:

1. FORGIVE YOURSELF for your past mistakes. You are only human. Look at yourself with kind eyes. Yes, you have been a “Mistake Maker”, but you are now learning to be a “Mistake Breaker”. Negative people like to throw others’ mistakes in their faces. Don’t let them hold you back. Face them square on and look them in the eyes and tell them “Yes, I’ve been a mistake-maker, but now I am a mistake breaker”. Look in the mirror and tell this to yourself, at least once a day.

2. FORGIVE OTHERS for any injustices that they have committed against you.

No strings attached; no ifs, ands, buts, or maybes You are forgiving others not for their sakes, but for your own, so that you can move on with your new life. This is not easy. I remember as a little girl watching a “public service” type of TV ad- I forget exactly what it was trying to promote. The ad was about a grizzled old ranch owner who dealt with trespassers, cattle rustlers, and those less fortunate in society the same way: “Hang him- it will teach him a lesson “; “String him up- it will teach him a lesson”.

One day, the ranch owner went to meet his maker, and stood before the Judgment Seat with much fear and trepidation, as he now realized how mercilessly he had treated others who were only trying to survive. Finally, judgment from “above” was pronounced on the ranch owner : “Forgive him- it will teach him a lesson”. So forgive others, even though they may have done things to you that are unforgivable. It is tough- the worst part for me was forgiving the uncle who had abused me from a very early age until he suddenly died when I was 10 years old. Almost as bad was forgiving my first husband who was violent towards my son and me. But, when you do this, you will feel that a heavy burden has been removed from your shoulders, and you can move ahead with building your new life.

3. MAKE AMENDS to those whom you have harmed, unless your making amends would harm them more. If you are familiar with a 12-step type of program for recovery from addiction, you know the value of this. You can make amends directly or symbolically- write a letter to someone you have harmed, pouring your heart out. This works for anyone with whom you have “unfinished business” but who is now deceased. As in forgiving others, this is hard. But when you do this, you will have the peace of mind of starting off your new life with a clean slate.

4. CULTIVATE AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

There is a Law of Gratitude, and you must observe the law, if you are to get the results you seek. The law of gratitude is the natural principle that action and reaction are equal, and in opposite directions.

Good analysis and research is the main criteria when it comes to sorting out your keywords. Easier said than done though in the great majority of cases. * Competitiveness of keywords and the strength of the competition.
* If sites ranked for particular keyword searches are really competitors or have any relationship to the area in which you compete.

The internet is one of the most important and easiest-to-use tools of our time. Using the internet wisely can help you save time and money.

But what if I can’t afford the internet at home?

Caveats

When you are researching anything on the internet, you need to judge the validity of the source you use. Three of the major points for judging sources are content, currency, and respectability. Is the site’s content what you expect, or is it reasonable? Is the site current? There is not use looking at pages from 1998 because those prices will be out of date. Is the site reputable? Is it a site that you have heard of, or is it affiliated with a company you have heard of? The site might even be written by someone you know. Before taking anything on the internet as gospel, ask yourself these three questions to judge the validity of the site you are viewing.

Do not make online purchases unless you feel comfortable. If you don’t feel comfortable using your credit card online, then don’t. Make sure that you only give your information to websites that you trust.

If the old adage time is money holds true, watch that you don’t spend all of your time on the internet. You don’t want to waste your valuable time that you can spend in other ways, though investing a little bit of time online often pays off in many ways.

How To Write A Book Despite Everything

Very few people actually know how to write a book. Most of those who have written one or more books have usually had to learn how as they went along. Even then, whatever they learned was what worked for them; there is almost no chance the same lessons would work for you.

You can understand, therefore, that anyone who tells you he can teach you how to write a book is not being entirely truthful. He can tell you what worked for him, or for other people, and he may be helpful, but he doesn’t have a magic wand with your name on it.

The thing is, not knowing how to write a book is the easiest obstacle to overcome on the way to becoming an author. If that were the only problem, you would have already finished writing a dozen books. You have been learning how to do things by doing them for your whole life. Learning how to write a book is little different from learning how to ride a bicycle. You keep at it until you get it right.

The real reasons you haven’t written a book are personal and private. Maybe they are common, or maybe they are unique and fantastic. The following are just a few of the reasons I have heard for not writing a book:

I can’t write well enough.
I don’t have anything to write about.
My life is completely uninteresting.
I don’t have time.
I can’t afford to self-publish.
Someone else has probably already done it better.
It would be a waste of time.

Your reasons are probably much better and more forbidding than these. (Which underscores your innate creative ability, by the way. But I digress.)

So we come to the point of how to write a book despite everything. The point is that if you take these obstacles, your own obstacles, one at a time or all together, and try to overcome them before you start to write a book, you will never start.

How to write a book despite everything is not a matter of overcoming obstacles. Nor is it a matter of ignoring obstacles. You do not pretend they don’t exist. You certainly don’t argue with them, or try to convince yourself they are unimportant. If people tell you that you are wasting your time, or acting foolish, or being stupid, you don’t ignore, argue with, or try to convince them.

If you want to cross a desert, you don’t argue with the heat, and you don’t ignore it, and you don’t overcome it, or pretend it doesn’t exist. You don’t listen to the cautious advisors who tell you that you are stupid, or acting foolish, or wasting your time and will die. No, you grab a hat and some water, and start walking.

That is as far as that analogy will stretch. I hope it was sufficient to make the point.

You want to write a book? Cool. Write a book. When it’s done, you can either go back over it and make it better, or write another one. It’s okay to get help, too. Professional editors, proofreaders, and writers can quite likely take your finished book and turn it into a marketable manuscript. But they can’t do that if you don’t give them a book in the first place.

Most first books are not very good, especially not in the first draft. That’s okay. You learn how to write a book by writing a book. There really is no other way. If you want to get good at it, you write another.

I will give you one hint, just to help you get started. Think about making your first book kind of a short one, to get your feet wet.
