The vital question is where does this leave us? I lived through Viet Nam, and I understand the origins of the Korean War. I have also taken the time to study guerilla tactics that were used in Malaysia, Burma, and various African countries. To quote a movie, “Houston, we have a problem”. Our President is asleep at the switch on this one, and is caught up in a cycle of decision making that he doesn’t seem capable of extricating himself from.

Our DECISION WINDOW whereby we could have possibly turned Iraq into a democracy has now PASSED. We did in fact win the war. It took 29 days to take control of Baghdad. It could take more than a dozen years at this point with a continued outlay of $200 billion per year, and several thousand American lives per year plus ten thousand American causalities per year to potentially build a democracy - no guarantees though. The question is FOR WHAT?

If the answer is to IMPOSE democracy on a country where Thomas Jefferson and George Washington do not seem to exist, then it can not be done. You are simply beating your head against the wall. This is not an American failure in my opinion. What we were attempting to achieve was simply not achievable. Certainly not without the presence of hundreds of thousands of additional American troops, which is not in the cards?

This is a region built on dictatorships. It is no coincidence that Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator. The argument has always been advanced as to “Whether Saddam Hussein made Iraq, or did Iraq make Saddam Hussein”. After the last three years, the question is more appropriate than ever.

In our country we consider life to be very precious. Don’t go by the headlines in the newspapers. That’s toilet reading. Go by what happens when miners get trapped in mines, or when a woman is trapped in a burning building. What about when a child falls into an abandoned well? Is any thought given to the cost of saving these individuals? The answer is none. Every conceivable way that can be utilized to save lives is grabbed at by the emergency workers.

When you look at the Mid East, you realize we are dealing with a region that gives no thought to human life. Wasting lives there is a daily fact of living. It always has been this way, and always will be. I am not a pessimist; I must deal with reality however. In over a half century of living I have found certain notions to be eternally true. One of them is that you can’t ever want more for another human being than that human being wants for themselves. You will simply waste your time, and your energy. People have to be ready to fight for democracy. Nobody in Iraq is willing to wage that fight, except for American soldiers. This is a recipe for disaster.

The analogy to Iraq is that unless you are prepared to kill the very last terrorist, that terrorist is going to remain long after the American presence is gone. I know the President probably sincerely believes that by remaining in Iraq we are working towards the reconfiguration of the government into a democracy. I believe we are simply postponing the INEVITABLE. Right now that looks like a Shia led government in Baghdad with no room for the Sunnis who supported Saddam. In fact, the Shia will continue to kill the Sunni’s and the Sunni’s will retaliate by killing Shia when they can, and our President wants decent young Americans to hang on in between, and get shot at.

To quote people smarter than me, “IT AIN’T GONNA WORK”. We are simply putting off what is going to happen any way. The difference is that later, it will be at a greater cost to our brave American soldiers, and our national treasury. This President chooses to borrow the money from foreigners to finance the war effort. He has asked for sacrifice from our troops only, nothing from Americans.

There have been no tax increases to pay for this disaster, only increases in the national debt so that our children and their children will shoulder the burden. The army is now having problems fulfilling its manpower requirements. We are stretched thin. The Iranians and North Koreans know we can not currently wage another military action in either country. We are bogged down in Iraq.

The American people on the other hand have shown that they are out in front of their President leading him, as opposed to him leading them which is an unusual situation. The recent Congressional elections clearly demonstrate that the people want a change in direction in the war NOW. If the President continues to stay the course, or dig himself deeper into a hole in the face of the people wanting a change, the complete rejection of the Republican Party will take place in the next Presidential election.

You have to realize that the Republican Party in the last twelve years gerrymandered just about every seat in the House of Representatives in order to maintain control of that body. In spite of the cards being stacked against the Democrats, the people delivered the House to the Democratic Party anyway. This was not a vote of confidence for the Democrats. People were simple voting AGAINST the Republicans, and privately the Democrats will acknowledge this.

The answer is for the President to announce immediately a phased withdrawal and put the burden of building a country back onto the Iraqis where it belongs. It is their country. They must be willing to die for building their own democracy, or leave it to the next dictator to pick up the pieces. It won’t be Thomas Jefferson, he’s just not there.

I was introduced to Billy Joel through the sitcom “Bosom Buddies” with Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks. I was told that the show wasn’t suitable for children, but something about the antics of two men dressing up as women hit my funny bone. I was also fond of “Three’s Company”, so thinking back I wonder what my parents were thinking with regards to their seven-year-olds’ TV habits.

I was hooked by the theme song of “Bosom Buddies”, and I would run around our house singing “keep it to yourself…it’s my life!” at the top of my voice. I had no idea who Billy Joel was but I sure liked his song. One day my brother told me that the guy singing it was Billy Joel, and I discovered that there was a Billy Joel album available.

My tiny brain began to spin. If I could purchase a Billy Joel album, I could listen to my favorite song whenever I want on our record player. If I had his album, I could hear Billy Joel’s song without having to wait for a week for “Bosom Buddies” to come on.

I was only given fifty cents a week for my allowance and I calculated that at that rate it would take a few years before I could afford that album. I knew that I had to have that Billy Joel album, so I started a campaign of chores to show my parents that I deserve a bigger allowance.

I did the dishes, swept the floor, dusted, made my bed, and even walked the dog. I was sure that my parents noticed that I was up to something, but they know a good thing when they see it and didn’t let on. Finally my mother announced that she thought I deserved a treat. When I told her I wanted a record, we made plans to go to the mall. I was sure my mother expected me to pick out one of my story 45’s that cost a dollar, but she effectively concealed her surprise, when I marched up to the counter with my new Billy Joel album.

Like most closet musicians, you likely arrived at a turning point in your life where you had to decide between the certainty of a job and the uncertainty of a life in the music business. And, like the vast majority, you chose the more stable path. Do you ever wonder though, what it would have been like if you had enough courage to pursue the other path - even if it would have totally freaked your parents out?

As a professional concert pianist I have people say to me all the time that they would give anything to do what I do. A lot of these folks wish they just could turn back the clock and get another shot at it, even if it might not have been the responsible thing to do.

That’s why I’m so grateful for the path I have chosen, not only because I love it but because, I never have to worry about what I might have missed. The truth is; I love music and what it does for my soul. I wake up every day with excitement because I really don’t know what’s going to happen or where I’ll end up. That to me is a gift, not a liability. The only thing certain in my life is uncertainty and that I can always count on.

But, our society is not programmed to think in these terms. We’re groomed in school to play it safe, get a job and pay the bills. It’s definitely the easy thing to do but is it the right thing? I think we were all born to learn something new and exciting every day. For most people who go to the same job day after day, a job they most likely hate - how is this learning?

Many people find themselves at a turning point in their latter years when they think to themselves, “What exactly happened to my dreams?” But, then you think to yourself, “I got married and had kids, it would have been completely irresponsible of me to follow my dreams because so few actually make it.” That’s true, except why couldn’t you have been one of the few?

In any case, I often say to people, “Why don’t you quit your job now while you still can?” To my mind, living every day in a situation you hate will only lead you somewhere you don’t want to go. It’s important to choose a goal in life that you really are passionate about because, that’s what will make your life exciting and challenging. Anybody can get a job.

But, even if you absolutely cannot give up your job, why not take up music seriously at the same time? For now, start practicing in secrecy. Then eventually you’ll be good enough to perform for others. And, if you’re passionate enough, you may even get to be the performer that you’ve always admired from a distance. You know, the one you’ve often cheered for with mixed delight and sorrow because, you know you could have been that person?

The good news, it’s not too late!

Take my friend Bruce for example. With three years left to go to his retirement as a bank executive, he reintroduced himself to blues guitar. Shortly thereafter he reunited his high school band and now they’re actually booking themselves for dances, concerts and private functions.

And, my friend Mary Ann is doing the same thing. She had a music degree in classical piano which, she eventually gave up to become a family doctor. Now, several years later she’s formed a jazz quartet with some friends and another doctor on drums, and the band performs at least 5 nights a month around town.

These are just two examples of people who understand that they can have it all; both a successful professional career and a life in music. Like them, you don’t have to wait for your retirement to get back to doing what you love.

So next time you feel the need to rejuvenate your life with music, come on out of the closet. Because, the truth of the matter is the only thing stopping you, is you. Take my advice and start living your life the way you want and not the way everyone else expects of you. Live the rest of your life doing what you love because, the only risk in life is not taking one.

THE NAME GAME

Have your guests pick out two names for the baby. Ask them each to write the names they picked on a piece of paper (and tell them not to tell anyone else what the names are). Then tell them to try to come up with as many words possible using just the letters from those two names. Words should be of three letters or more in length. They need to come up with as many words from these names as possible. Give the guests a few minutes of time to complete this task.

When the time is up, have each guest read only the words they came up with - not the name, and see if all the other guests can figure out what names she wrote down.

FEEDING TIME

Put a several cotton balls in a big bowl and place an empty bowl in front of it. One at a time, players should try to transfer the cotton balls from one bowl to the other, using a spoon, while blindfolded. Cotton balls are light, so it’s really hard to gauge how many balls you are scooping up with the spoon. The winner of the game is the player that is able to transfer the most cotton balls to the other bowl within thirty seconds.

RICE BOWL

Half-way fill a bowl with plain, uncooked rice, then mix in some closed safety pins. Blindfold the players and have them, one at a time, use one hand to take as many safety pins out of the bowl as possible. The person who gets the most pins in 30 seconds is the winner. This may sound simple, but in reality the safety pins feel a lot like the rice.

Have your guests bring pictures of themselves as a baby to the baby shower. Be very careful with these photos as they are important keepsakes. Lay each of these photos next to a number. Give each guest a list of the names of all the other guests and see if they can match the number of each photo to the right guests.

Most publishing houses, especially big ones, are divided into “imprints,” which publish under a separate name, often in a specific genre. They usually have their own set of editors, though some editors acquire manuscripts for multiple imprints. Some are much more narrow than others-for example, books published under the imprint that shares the name of the house (Random House, Simon & Schuster, etc.) usually cut a wide swath: fiction and nonfiction; literary and commercial. But each publishing house also has more specific imprints, and creates new ones on a regular basis. Random House, the world’s biggest publisher, lists no fewer than fifty-five different U.S. imprints on its website. And that doesn’t count those that produce audiobooks, large-print texts, etc.

Visit Random House’s website, and the websites of as many publishers as possible. Even if you think it’s not the place for your genre, you may be surprised. Most publishers list their imprints, along with brief descriptions, and often a specific imprint doesn’t fit the overall image of that publishing house. Houses create new imprints to follow book industry trends: for example, following the success of such authors as Bill O’Reilly and Ann Coulter, several new politically conservative imprints appeared, including Crown Forum at Random House, Sentinel at Penguin, and Threshold at Simon & Schuster. Also, imprints are popping up all over the place to cater to the fast-growing market of Latin-American readers, such as Rayo at HarperCollins.

After you consult the publishers’ own lists, bypass their marketing lingo and look at their products, in bookstores. Browse Amazon, or go into your local Barnes & Noble, and head for the section where you think your book belongs. If you’re writing a commercial mystery series, it will most likely be published as a mass-market paperback (until you become a household name and graduate to the hardcover ranks). Browse the shelves, or scroll down the Amazon pages of books similar to yours, and make a list of the imprints you see. Most likely a few will appear over and over-the major publishers-and you’ll see a few others, perhaps smaller houses or new imprints. If you’re in the mystery section, about one-fourth of the books’ spines will say “Berkley Prime Crime”-Penguin’s mass-market mystery imprint.

Once you have an agent, if they’re at all competent, they’ll know to submit your genre mystery series to an editor at Berkley who acquires for their Prime Crime imprint. But let’s back up: if you see a particular type of mystery filling the shelves (or missing from them), keep that in mind when devising your own series idea. But don’t follow trends blindly: remember that the books now on the shelves were acquired as long ago as two years, and the trend you see may already have passed.

An even more helpful goal is to be able to ask a prospective agent the reasonable question, “What are some imprints you might submit my manuscript to?” If you’ve written a commercial mystery series, and they don’t mention Berkley (or the other major mystery imprints), perhaps that agent isn’t savvy enough, or simply isn’t the right one for your manuscript. If you’ve done your homework, you’re better equipped to make in informed decision.

The same holds true after you’ve signed on with an agent. Refrain from sending them a list of places you want your manuscript submitted. That’s like saying, “I don’t trust you to do your job.” Few things annoyed me more when I was an agent. And please, I beg you, don’t contact an editor who received your manuscript through an agent, unless you know the editor personally. Following up is part of the agent’s job. However, it is (or should be) perfectly acceptable to ask where your book has been submitted and why a particular imprint isn’t on the list.

There’s one terrific reference book for info about both publishers and agents: Jeff Herman’s Guide, which is updated every year. It needs to be, since its long list of book agents and book publishers is ever-changing. It provides company contact info, names, submission policies, and genre preferences of both agents and publishers. If your agent mentions a publisher/imprint to you that you haven’t heard of, look them up in the guide, search for them on Amazon, and Google them.

In short, it’s always best to be as knowledgeable as you can about the industry. It can help you focus your manuscript, especially if it’s in a commercial genre. It’ll help you find an agent. It’ll help you work with your agent to market your book to the right places, and identify whether your agent is doing the best he or she can with your manuscript. You don’t need to have insider contacts or shell out the dough for a subscription to Publishers Weekly. Just do a little browsing of the Internet or the bookstore, and reap the benefits of your homework!
