And needless to say, the 3rd Annual Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) 2006, about to take place from December 7-10 will have all the necessary components to catch the fancy of the international media with its brilliant film screenings coupled with the nation’s tropical beauty and cultural charms that the festival attendees will be able to indulge in. With able support and close assistance of the Founding Sponsors Atlantis Paradise Island Resort and the Islands of The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the three-day long festivities in the international film festival circuit will kick-off at the Atlantis Theatre, Paradise Island and at Galleria 6 JFK in Nassau, the two cultural hubs of Bahamas. Programs, panels, and gala parties to be held at various locations around Nassau and Paradise Island are supposed to be essential elements of this unique and gorgeous event. Above all, the most strikingly beautiful part of the whole event is that it is available and accessible to visitors and Bahamians alike.

In its mission statement, the Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) claims that the festival organizers are committed to exhibiting unique films that showcase truly international themes. Films that focus on combining both enjoyment and thought provoking concepts via the cinematic arts are more than welcome as entrants. Leslie Vanderpool, the Founder & Executive Director of BIFF says that while they have screened hundreds of films from all over the world and from all Diaspora, they will be showcasing a slate of fifty narrative, documentary and short films over the festival’s four days.

A truly unique and special attraction of the Bahamas film festival event will be the star-value of actor Nicolas Cage, who is an Oscar winner and a Bahamian resident. He will be present in the spectacular event as a recipient of the Career Achievement Tribute sponsored by Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch (LODH). What more, the much talked-about BIFF Tribute Chopard Award will also be presented at a gala event at the Atlantis Theatre at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort and Casino to Mr. Cage by Sir Sean Connery, his co-star in “The Rock.”

This gala attraction is due on Friday, December 8.

Time Management For Writers

Most established writers have deadlines to follow. They are either pressed to complete an article by a certain time or they have a novel or non-fiction book that must be handed in by a deadline. In each case they have either a mandatory of self-imposed daily word count they need to complete in order to finish on time.

The primary components to time management for writers should encompass several things.

1. Writing - By actually identifying what your purpose is you take the first step in making sure it is included in your thinking.

2. Research - Take the time to conduct research on your subject matter, if you don’t factor time for this you have to borrow from other categories and you will likely fall behind in your writing.

3. Market Research - When you research the intended audience for your work it can help you more closely guide the work in the right direction.

4. Rest and Recreation - If you don’t factor time for these two things they will get lost. At the root of recreation is re-create. Our creative juices are revitalized in down time. If we spend all our time writing we will likely lose perspective and our work will suffer.

5. Family and friends - This is a close cousin to the last time management component, but your work should never trump your family. If you borrow too much from this category the damaging effects can be long-term.

The old saying, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy is true. Most of the zeal you have for writing is to express the very things that life has brought your way. If you have no life because of your writing you may well lose the zeal you have for writing. It is a cycle that many writers have encountered when they placed so much emphasis on the writing that the other categories of time management went bankrupt.

Balance

Finding a balance between life and writing is a hard task. However once you understand writing should be a component of your life instead of the dictator you can assimilate your writing into a schedule that has more than one category.

Writing Goals

It is important to set writing goals, but they should be done with the understanding that even writers need a life. Know your limits and always try to work within those limits.

Of necessity, deadlines are important component in the process of publication. A smart writer will learn to gain a clear perspective on their abilities and refuse to put something together at the last minute. They will also make room for life in the midst of their writing.

The Dukes Of Hazzard (Season 3) DVD Review

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, television viewers fell in love with The Dukes Of Hazzard, a weekly foray into the fictional setting of Hazzard County, Georgia. Cousins Bo and Luke Duke (John Schneider and Tom Wopat) spent each episode trying to do good, while the loveable “Boss” Hogg (Sorrell Booke) concocted various schemes for making money and having the Duke boys, who always foiled his plans, thrown in jail for violating their probation (the result of a deal with the federal government to end the centuries-old Duke family tradition of bootlegging).

Joining Bo and Luke are their Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle), a grandfatherly figure who owns the family farm, and Cousin Daisy (Catherine Bach), whose skimpy shorts coined the cultural term “daisy dukes”. Along with “Crazy” Cooter (Ben Jones), the local mechanic, they create a formidable threat to the money-making shenanigans of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (James Best) and the owner of seemingly every business entity in Hazzard County, J.D. “Boss” Hogg. But critics will argue that the true star of the show was the General Lee, Bo and Luke’s bright orange Dodge race car with the Confederate flag pasted on its roof…

The Dukes Of Hazzard (Season 3) DVD provides a number of famous episodes, including guest appearances by musicians Tammy Wynette, Roy Orbison, and The Oak Ridge Boys. Sheriff Little of Chickasaw County (Don Pedro Colley) makes the first of many appearances in Season 3. Other notable episodes include “The Great Santa Claus Chase” in which Boss Hogg conspires to steal the county’s delivery of Christmas trees so he can resell them at exorbitant profits, but the Dukes and Cooter have different plans, and “My Son, Bo Hogg” in which Boss Hogg takes advantage of Bo’s amnesia and turns him against the Dukes…

Secret Science to Getting Rich

Have you heard of the DVD called the Secret ? It is a book and movie that have transformed the lives of many. The Secret teaches how to change your life experience by changing your thoughts. These concepts were used by some of the most successful, influential and wealthy people in history. It appears as if these successful people knew something, they knew the Science of Getting Rich and how to apply the Law of Attration.

The central theme of the Secret is a philosophy called the Law of Attraction . In fact, the movie itself was inspired by this very same law when the producer read a book called the Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles. This book was written in 1910, little did Wattles know how he would impact the thinking of the world nearly 100 years later. The law of attraction states that we create our reality, both good and bad based on what we think about and focus on. Following on the success of the Secret, several of the core teachers - namely Bob Proctor and Jack Canfield have collaborated to produce a wealth building program called the Secret Science of Getting Rich Seminar . This program is based on the book that inspired the movie and is set to make history as the fastest selling personal development program in history. This is best value success program in the marketplace today.

What is the Science of Getting Rich program about? Well in the words of Wallace D. Wattles, The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law, like gravity or polarity, that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any individual who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich. Saving for your child’s future

Having children isn’t cheap these days, especially in the long term - the older they get, the more they cost. Higher education prices continue to soar and it’s almost impossible to get onto the housing market without having some capital or homeowner loans. All of these things may seem so far ahead, especially if your child is very young, but now’s the time to start saving to ensure you can provide what your children need further down the line.

Surveys suggest that we’re starting to realise this. A report published by Mintel in October 2005 found that 75% of British parents with children under 14 are now saving for their children’s futures. Nearly six million parents are now saving for their children, compared to just under five million in 2003. So it’s evident that we understand the need to save, but it’s not always easy to do so. The day-to-day family finances can be difficult enough to manage without having to think about the future. This article provides some information on how to save for children and explains some of the financial products available.

Bank accounts

The first step that most parents take towards saving for their children is to open a savings account on their behalf and start making cash deposits. Most banks and building societies have accounts specially tailored for children. They often have a higher rate of interest and offer incentives such as membership of a kids’ savings club with regular newsletters, piggy banks, toys and badges. Even if you’re not sure how often you’ll be able to make deposits into the account, it’s a good idea to set one up as soon as possible after your child is born so that it’s there whenever you do have money to put aside. Try to get into the habit of putting in at least a small amount on a regular basis - setting up an automatic transfer from your bank account will make this much easier. Alternatively, simply depositing the government child benefit on a weekly basis will get you off to a good start - it’s amazing how quickly it builds up.

Tax

Children are subject to income tax on bank accounts just like adults.

They receive a tax allowance and as long as their total income including interest doesn’t exceed this allowance in the financial year, they will not be taxed on their interest. (The allowance for 2006-2007 is £5,035.) However, this only applies when the savings are gifted by a relative or friend. Interest on money gifted by parents will be subject to tax if the amount of interest earned in a year exceeds £100 per parent. (This prevents parents from taking advantage of children’s accounts for their own savings.) If your child’s annual income will be less than their tax allowance and the money you give them in a year will amount to less than £100 in interest, you can fill out an R85 form from the Inland Revenue to apply to have the interest paid without tax being deducted. It may be worth opening separate bank accounts if your child will be receiving money from yourself as well as relatives or friends, to save any confusion.

Child trust funds

The introduction of child trust fund by the government in 2005 has made a big difference in helping parents to save for their children. In the scheme, new parents are given a minimum of £250 to invest in a long-term savings and investment account on their children’s behalf, plus a further £250 when the child turns seven. The proceeds are held in trust for them until their 18th birthday. It’s not subject to tax and up to £1,200 can be invested each year by parents, family or friends.

There are three types of account - a savings account, a shares account and a stakeholder account. The choice you make will depend to a great extent on your attitude towards risk. Savings accounts are the safest method as you won’t lose money this way, but the returns on the investment tend not to be very high.

The shares account invest your child’s money by purchasing stock market shares. Investing in shares can be risky, especially in the short term, although on the whole the stock market can produce a good long-term returns as share values tend to rise more than they fall over a long period. As saving for children is normally a long-term approach, shares accounts can be an attractive option. However, shares can go down as well as up at any time and past performance isn’t necessarily an indicator of future performance. It’s also important to note that the account provider will normally charge an annual fee for managing the shares.

The stakeholder account is a medium risk option, which invests in shares until the child turns 13 and then the money is transferred to lower risk investments and assets, helping to limit potential losses in the lead-up to the child’s 18th birthday. However, if the stock market performs well over this period, the returns won’t be as high as they would have been if the money had remained in the higher risk investments.

You’ll need to choose not only which account you want for your child, but also which provider. Various different banks, buildings societies and financial organisations provide approved child trust fund accounts.

The government simply sends you a voucher for £250, which you’ll invest in the account and provider of your choice. All providers are of course regulated and must meet the terms and conditions stipulated by the government. However, there may be differences in the products they offer. Look out for fees charged and any requirements relating to how much you deposit and how frequently.

Other government-backed savings options

The National Savings and Investments Bank (formerly the Post Office Bank) is an agency of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. It was set up in 1861 by the Palmerston Government to help working people save for their futures and as a means of raising government funds for public spending.

It offers various safe and secure options for saving. Premium Bonds, for example, are a monthly large-value prize draw in which you can enter anything from £100 to £30,000. The jackpot can be up to £1million, but prizes of between £50,000 and £100,000 can be won for every bond number held. The prizes are tax-free and bonds can be bought by parents, relatives or friends on behalf of children under 16. Alternatively, indexed linked savings certificates are a great method of tax-free saving in which the value of your money increases in line with inflation (linked to the Retail Prices Index) at guaranteed interest rates. Between £100 and £15,000 can be invested per issue, and they are available to anyone over the age of seven (or can be bought on a child’s behalf if they are under seven).

There are lots of other possibilities for saving for your children - investments, stocks and shares, bonds, savings accounts, trust funds - not all of which are specifically designed for children. In such cases, you’ll need to manage the money on the child’s behalf until they reach 18 (or sometimes 21). To find out how you can best provide for your child’s future, you should visit a financial advisor who will be able to outline the most suitable options for you and your family.

How Do I Puppy Proof My Home?

If there’s one lesson that I’ve learned well as a dog owner, it’s this: Before bringing that new puppy home, you want to puppy proof your home.

Here’s how you can do just that.

Identify and remove any toxic plants that could effect your puppy

Many plants that are common to our gardens and homes (including the dead leaves) can be poisonous to our dogs. Here is the ASPCA listing which is an excellent listing and resource: Toxic Plants

Think about toxic human foods - the yummy things that can kill your puppy!

There are human foods that are very toxic to dogs. Chief among them are onions, chocolate, grapes and raisins. It is very important that you make any children in your house AND neighborhood aware of this. For a complete list go to: Bad Food List

Third, here are ten things to do the day before that new bundle of fir arrives.

• Close doors or set up baby gates to rooms you don’t want the puppy to get into. Puppies are naturally curious and will explore. It is best to keep them confined to one room or part of a room, and gradually increase their range.

• Get all plant, small pets (gerbils, guinea pigs, fish, lizards, etc.), electrical cords and curtain/shade pulls out of puppy range. Covers for electrical cords are advisable.

• Keep kids’ toys picked up and out of puppy reach. Puppies do not know the difference between their toys and your daughter’s brand new Barbie doll.

• Remote controls and video game equipment (which are often used and left on the floor) needs to be put in a secure location away from a curious puppy.

• Lift up your wastebaskets! Gross as it sounds, dogs love dirty tissues and other nasty things that are put in wastebaskets! It is like their own disgusting, nose level buffet. My adult dogs are five and ten years old and will still occasionally sneak things out of the wastebaskets.

• Check your fencing - make sure it goes completely to the ground. You would be amazed at how small a gap a puppy can fit through! In fact, I recommend keeping puppies tethered, even if the backyard is fenced, until they are fairly reliable on the recall.

The game of ‘Catch the Puppy’ is not a good game to be playing with your young puppy. You need to stay in control as much as possible.

• Keep all medications and chemicals securely hidden. Dogs can counter cruise and a simple bottle of pain reliever consumed by a curious pup can have fatal consequences.

• Remember, your puppy is going to grow! What may pass for puppy-proof today may not be adequate in another month or two. Be aware of your pup’s ever increasing range and curiosity.

• Bottom line is you have to be watching your puppy constantly. Any thing other than food that they chew and swallow has the potential to make them sick or, worse yet, kill them.

• Don’t forget the tail. Not all puppy damage is done by puppy chewing. Make sure all breakable items are above tail level. One good swipe with a happy tail and grandma’s crystal vase is shattered.

Finally, have Poison Control Center information handy

If you think your puppy has been poisoned Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center The telephone number is (888) 426-4435. There is a consultation fee for this service.

Use the ideas presented here to prepare your home for your new puppy.

Family Emergency Preparedness

As the USA hurricane season wounds down some people are sighing with relief especially those on the Gulf Coast and Florida. Yes, we seemed to have dodged a bullet this year even though we still have until November 30th before the hurricane season officially ends.

So we are seeing at US Prepared people say: Well I guess that emergency preparedness is not the most important item on my radar for the rest of 2006.

WRONG!

This is the time that you need to prepare your family for 2007!

So what can you do?

First visit our site at www.usprepared.com http://www.usprepared.com and get your FR** Emergency Preparedness Guide and make sure to sit down with the family and read through it. After you have read through it then begin to take ACTION now!

Make sure that you have at least a week but preferably more of the items suggested on hand for every member of the family. And remember your pets are important for emergency preparedness!

We are strongly encouraging every family to purchase one particular item for Christmas this year - a family tent!

Why a family tent? Family tents usually have two or three room allowing for privacy.

Remember those poor souls that had driven away from Hurricane Katrina and Rita last year only to find the motels already booked to capacity and the stuffy concrete floors of the shelters packed like sardines?

Would it not be a heck of a lot more comfortable to find a state park or national park where you could set up your family tent without the added stress of hundreds of people crammed together?

We are going to be starting a national campaign at US Prepared to enlighten every legislator, governor, emergency preparedness official and media member about how we need to take advantage of our state and national parks during emergencies. We have learned that during Katrina state parks in Arkansas were utilized. That is a step in the right direction. Most state parks that I have visited in Georgia have bathrooms, showers and even electric outlets.

If you want to follow my venture then go to www.usprepared.com http://www.usprepared.com beginning around the first of November 2006 and you will see a video blog of my staying at a park for an extended period of time. You will see me in both a family tent and also an emergency preparedness tent that can be utilized for a larger amount of people.

We are strongly urging people to tell their friends and most importantly their elected officials about this project to better utilize our state and national parks for emergencies.

Hugh Simpson is a former investigative reporter for Post Newsweek TV and author of A Family Survival Manual for Y2K & Beyond featured on CNN, Fox News, Coast to Coast AM, etc. Currently he is the co-founder of US Prepared, an emergency preparedness consulting firm and a TV producer. You can get his FR** Emergency Preparedness Guide at www.usprepared.com http://www.usprepared.com .

The History and Origins of Our PC Computer Keyboards

The keyboard is among the most underappreciated and taken for granted component of the Personal Computer (PC) that we use everyday.

We are all creatures of habit. We generally use certain keys and not others in certain way.

What are the origins and history of the now current accepted PC computer keyboard?

Interestingly enough the standard keyboard layout did not originate in one fell swoop. It developed through three separate IBM keyboard projects and often involved mistakes and pitfalls along its evolutionary path.

Most keyboard setups have their direct origin in the original IBM keyboard - “The IBM Enhanced 101 Key Keyboard “which IBM set as the standard in the year of 1987. The Enhanced Keyboard was not the first but rather IBM’s third keyboard standard for PCs.

What were these previous frameworks of IBM keyboard models?

First the original IBM PC and XT keyboards had 83 keys. There were 10 function keys on the left side of the keyboard, a combined number pad and a cursor pad placed on the right hand side. The now called Control (Ctrl), Left Shift, and Alt keys were arranged in a line next to the function keys.

The Escape (Esc) as we know it was to the left of the numbers in the top row. To the right of the Right Shift Key, an unshifted asterisk key allowed the user to type the now common *.* without acrobatics. Between the tiny Left Shift key and the Zee key was a Backslash / Vertical key. The Enter key was narrow and vertically aligned and very easy to miss by most early PC users.

The design of this original IBM keyboard standard was a mixture of sensible and absurd keyboard layout decisions so much so that the admired components overshadowed the less thought out shortcomings and thus here we are today.

IBM’s next design was the original AT keyboard. This was somehow made incompatible with the earlier PC/XT design but a calculating user could reprogram in essence the newer keyboard to work.

The AT keyboard again had the then accepted ten function keys on the left, but exiled the Esc and the unshifted asterisk to the number pad. The Enter key was L-shaped and the Backsplash key, which now occupied the spot which used to be the left half of the Backspace key. Was reduced in size to the width of a single “alpha” key.

At some point when market forces pushed IBM to upgrade the venerable AT computer, it introduced the Enhanced model keyboard which was compatible with the original AT model, but had a drastically different layout. The ESC key and the 12 function keys were now along the top, the number pad was moved to the right. And a new cursor pad was placed between the alpha keys a number pad. The cursor pad ( which was actually split into two sets of keys ) consisted of four arrow keys in an inverted T at the bottom and a separate bank of 6 keys at the top: Ins ( Insert) , Del (Delete) , Home and End, and PgUp (Page up_ and PgDn ( Page down) .

What happened is that the computer users of the time disastrously started to press the Delete key when they meant end. There was virtually little memory, by today’s standards’ hence no advanced features of rescue that we take for granted today. A computer user who may have spent hours typing a major endeavor such as master’s thesis may have seen his hard work disappear into never never land.

It did not take too long for the complaints to arrive at IBM head office to rectify the situation. “Leave well enough alone “was the refrain. And the Backspace key returned to its original double width. The backslash key now occupied a single row. Caps lock migrated to the old side of the Ctrl key, and twin Ctrl and Alt keys flanked the spacebar.

The Del key though remained in its now current place although in some keyboards it is now double sized.

Like it or not this layout has become the standard by which we live with our computer enhanced lives.

The keyboard is among the most underappreciated and taken for granted component in our every day computer lives. We seldom stop to think why certain keys are laid out in the given way. Like it or not we owe a debt to thoughtfulness and thoroughness of the original IBM PC project engineers.

Want To Buy Fossils Wisely?

When looking to buy fossils to create or add to your collection it is advantageous to have some information about the fossils you want and the dealers you are buying from.

Don’t Pay Too Much!

You can find fossils at all sorts of gift shops, rock shops, and nature stores. But here’s the hitch: BE CAREFUL! The one-of-a-kind nature of fossils sometimes has a price tag-a BIG price tag! You need to know whether your fossil purveyor is reputable and knowledgeable, but most importantly, YOU need to know if they are overcharging you!

A Shopping Trip Brings A Shopping Tip

We found ourselves in a jewelry store that sold a very popular and pricey kind of ammonite to be made into jewelry. These ammonites truly are EXPENSIVE! But right alongside the expensive Canadian ammonites, were ammonites from Madagascar. These small ammonites are also very beautiful and unique…but not worth the $300 price tags that they were sporting. In fact, a fair price for them would have been between $50 and $100. This is not the kind of place to buy fossils.

Rule Of Thumb Price Guide

When I go into a new fossil shop to buy fossils I start by looking for 2 or three very common fossils, that I am familiar with and have seen for sale in many places. Trilobites, ammonites, orthoceras, and sometimes fossil shark teeth are what I look for. Now there is a great range in quality, size, prices, and rarity for these fossils like any other. What I am hunting are commercial grade, inexpensive, and very common. When I find one or more of these I compare prices with my memory bank of other stores prices for similar specimens. My memory is not what it once was but even I can get a feel for prices on two or three fossils.

The rest is easy; the store fits into 1 of 3 categories:

They are overpriced, and I won’t buy fossils here.

The prices are fair. If I see something I really like I may buy it.

The prices are great. I’ll probably buy fossils here.

Remember, When you buy fossils, price alone does not a bargain make. The quality, size, and variety have to be similar to make this rule of thumb work.

Interview The Shop Owner

That sounds kind of formal doesn’t it. This is really an informal process. Just talk to the owner of the shop. Why are they in this business? Often you will find that they have a geology or palentology background. This is a good sign, though there are lots of good dealers out there with no formal training. A passion for fossils, rocks, or earth science is the key component to a good dealer. How long have they been in business? Do they stand behind their sales and sales claims?

The bigger the price tag the more you need to know about your dealer. Some fossil pieces cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. This is a major investment! Do some research.

Checklist for Organising Events in Spain

The following event planning checklist checklist gives you an idea of the type of things that have to be considered when planning an event here in Spain:

Choose a location in Spain

Our most popular destinations are Barcelona, Madrid, Marbella, Seville, Valencia and Malaga. Location is a key factor in the success of your company or group event.

Set a realistic budget

Consider all the expenses that are likely to come up and get quotes from different suppliers, caterers, entertainers or whatever other contractors you will need. Be realistic about how much you can afford to spend and what the actual costs are likely to be and allow a little extra for those unforeseen circumstances.

Decide upon a type of team building activity?

A group event can be an effective means of team building amongst your company or organization. A presentation, gala event, corporate function or other team building exercise can bring out many members of the team to participate, ideal for companies that have a large number of regional offices.

Find a venue that is appropriate and affordable.

Do you want a quiet, exclusive venue or a busy, dynamic city centre hotel? Do you want to stay at a hotel near the beach so that water-sports can be within reach, prefer to be in the middle of the countryside pursuing outdoor activities or want the most up to date business technologies for an audio-visual feast?

Do not choose a banquet hall far away from the group event just because it is half the cost of one more centrally located. You may find that the management of your ideal location is willing to offer a lower rate than you expected. Also the costs of transportation to another location for your team building exercises, gala dinners or any activities that you might pursue may negate any savings made on the venue.

Before you begin to promote a group event in Spain, make sure that you have signed contracts from the venue management and all contractors who will be working on the event. If you make a promise that you can not keep, it may tarnish your organization’s image for years to come, even if it is not your fault, let alone the wasted costs involved.

Check Passport Information

Travelling to Spain is very easy. If you are a citizen of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein you only need your Identification Card, or a valid passport. If you are from any of the following countries: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Korea, Romania, San Marino, the Holy See, Singapore, Uruguay, and Venezuela you would need a valid passport to enter Spain, where you can stay for a maximum of 90 days. If you are from any other country, according to the criteria of the EU, you must request a visa at the Spanish Consulate of your country of residence. You will also need a valid passport.
