Variety is the Spice of Life

People are creatures of habit and largely base choices on that which is familiar. Although some habits are good, cooking the same types of food over and over zaps creativity and breeds indifference in the kitchen. Food is not only necessary for survival, it is also a main source of enjoyment. Making the most of our meals increases pleasure and happiness. If your dinner hour is hum-drum bring something less predictable home from the market. One thing certain to add variety to your meals is broadening your selection of mushrooms. Mushrooms add flavor, texture and nutrition to appetizers, soups, salads and entrées. The possibilities are endless, and the results are fabulous.

Mushrooms are high in fiber and protein, and provide vitamins such as thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), biotin (B7), cobalamins (B12) and ascorbic acid (C), as well as minerals, including iron, selenium, potassium and phosphorus. Maitake, shiitake, and reishi are being researched for the possibility of use for anti-cancer, anti-viral, and/or immunity-enhancement properties.

If you are new to the world of mushrooms, you should know that mushrooms are best when used within a few days of purchase. Like other vegetables, it is best to wait until you are ready to use them before rinsing your mushrooms. Remove mushrooms plastic from their container and store in a paper bag, because if they are stored in an air-tight container the moisture trapped inside will cause early spoiling. It is not recommended to freeze fresh mushrooms, but if they are first sautéed, cooled and stored in an airtight container they may be frozen for up to a month. Care should be taken to cleaning your mushrooms, especially morels.

Shiitake, portabella and morels are great mushrooms to experiment with because they are becoming increasingly more available in local markets. Shiitakes are often dried and sold in packages. These must be re-hydrated by soaking in water about 15 minutes before using. The button of the Shiitake mushroom has a smooth and spongy texture. They are a great addition to any dish. Portabella mushrooms are sold both with the stem or just as caps. They are light tan, rounded, with black, visible gills on the underside. As they age and darken the flavor is richer. They are especially great sautéed in butter and wine, or you can grill or roast them. Portabellas not only enhance the beauty of your dinner, but also add a hearty flavor. Morels have short, thick stems with pointed caps and have a lot of texture. Morels may be tan, yellow or black in color and have a nutty flavor. The darker this mushroom, the more intense the flavor. As you gain experience using these mushrooms, you can venture out or order different varieties rather than hunt for them yourself.

Cooking mushrooms is easy and there are several ways to prepare them. Mushrooms taste great when seasoned! Use salt, pepper, garlic, or any other spice or herb that complements your meal. Sautéing is probably the most common cooking method. Place 8 ounces of mushrooms in a frying pan with a tablespoon or two of butter. Cook on medium high heat for a few minutes until soft. Don’t put too many mushrooms in a pan because the heat won’t be high enough to brown them. Equally tasty is grilling, roasting, or broiling mushrooms. Coating the mushrooms lightly with olive oil will keep them from drying out. When roasting mushrooms heat in a 450 F oven for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. To grill or broil, place your pan about 4 to 6 inches from the heat source and cook about 5 minutes. Oil may be added when turning them to ensure even cooking.

It does not take a lot of effort to make your meal more exciting, and adding variety with mushrooms will spice it up. Changing an everyday item for one that is extraordinary will please every pallet and make you look like a gourmet chef!

Grooms Are People Too!

Having photographed many weddings over the past 17 years I’ve come to the conclusion that the wedding day seems to be all about the bride. Not exactly shocking news you might think, but considering the groom is 50% of the union he’s certainly an underrepresented minority.

As a wedding photographer my day starts at the bride’s home where all the bridesmaids and flower girls have assembled. There’s a madhouse of activity with telephones ringing, flowers and bouquets being delivered and the heavy scent of hairspray lingering in the air. There’s absolutely no denying it. I’m at WEDDING HEADQUARTERS! I’m working at a rapid pace, photographing all the details of the wedding preparation. There are classic photographs that must be taken. Some of which include the bride with her bridesmaids, along with photos with her mom and dad and then…..the sleek limousine pulls into the driveway. Finally I’ll photograph the bride leaving her parents home for the last time as their unmarried daughter, getting into the limousine and heading off for the ceremony.

I’m already breaking out in a sweat and I haven’t even seen the groom yet. He’s that poor, forgotten figure who mysteriously appears at the front of the church, awaiting his beautiful bride. Anyone will acknowledge that there’s not going to be a wedding without him, but somehow he gets lost in the pre-wedding hysteria. Somehow that trip to the tuxedo rental shop doesn’t hold the same mystique for him that the bride experiences while hunting down the perfect dress. Obviously there are going to be exceptions to these observations, but most of the excitement, fun, and yes, the WORK of wedding planning is handled by the bride. Maybe it’s just traditional that the bride and her family plan for the wedding, and this may be particularly true when the two families live far from each other.

That being said, it’s my job as a wedding photographer to treat everyone equally during the wedding day. I’m always sure to photograph the groom and his family along with any special family request from either side. Some of the most emotional moments from any wedding celebration occur during the mother/son dance. My camera has captured many a teary eye during these dances. (tears of joy of course!) Not long ago I was working on a wedding album with one of my bridal customers. She’s a very nice young lady who was extremely low-key about the whole process. She had no unusual demands and never even approached a bridezilla moment. There was ONE thing she asked me to do when assembling her album. She told me that she didn’t care if the photos were placed in perfect chronology coinciding with the wedding day. She INSISTED that the first page of the album be a photograph of she AND her husband. The wedding was about both of us , she said. We then proceeded to select the perfect photograph to start the album.

How Parents Can Beat School Anxiety In Teens

Anxiety is such a gripping reality not only to people who are stressed out in the workplace, but it is something that teenagers also experience a great deal. School anxiety can even cause slight depression among teens. One major cause of anxiety in teens is comes from school. The different environment and the diverse people can cause a lot of pressure on a student. Add these up with tedious schoolwork and hectic curriculum activities; one can really say that school can cause a lot of severe anxiety.

Social exclusion is a serious issue among teens. This is also one cause of school anxiety. Having someone to talk to is very crucial during this stage. This is where parents should play an important role. Anxious teenagers need a lot of cheering up and someone to boost their morale; no other person can do this but their parents.

It is important that parents acknowledge the presence of anxiety in their children. They need to talk to them and try to understand the cause of their anxiety. Never underestimate their problem, even if it means just getting something done for a science project.

Always encourage your kids to make friends at school. This way, if parents are unable to be there in case they need them then their friends can lend a listening ear. Trust kids judgment in choosing their own set of friends.

Parents have the tendency to take matters in their own hands. If you feel that your kid is in an anxiety causing situation, allow them to work things out themselves. If things go over the line, for instance a teacher overloading students with impossible work loads, then that is the time to take needed action.

Don’t add to the pressure your kids have about school, this can cause them added anxiety. Never judge them outright because of their worries and let them know that you always have your shoulders for them to cry on. Having enough patience and understanding would definitely help you cope up with your kid’s anxiety. Teaching them the values of will power and confidence would eventually help beat anxiety themselves

15 Steps to Speed Up Your Computer

Your question, how do I speed up my computer? You get frustrated when your computer is very slow. You can now save yourself from aggravation especially when you are very busy working. I will show you 15 steps to do to speed up your computer.

Let me enumerate them: As I have also mentioned on my previous articles

1. Defrag your computer at least once every two weeks (I do it once a week). Go to start>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter. You can click on analyze first before you choose defrag, it will tell you if you need to defrag. Just defrag it even if it reports you don’t need to.

2. Do Disk Clean Up at least once every two weeks (again, I do this once a week). Go to start>accessories>system tools>disk clean up. It will analyze your disk and will generate reports. I suggest you delete files from the recycle bin and the files located in the temporary files folder. Note: I avoid compressing files. It’s your call.

3. Clean up your program files, delete and uninstall unwanted programs on your computer. Go to control panel>add remove programs. Make sure you restart your computer after uninstalling or removing the program so that complete deletion will take place.

4. Delete all files (temporary files and cookies from the computer). Here’s how: open a browser. On top of the browser click on tools>internet options>delete files and then delete cookies. Make your history set to (0). Others wants it on at least 10. I always set mine to (0).

5. You have to be very careful in installing or downloading programs. Make sure you need it, if not please just avoid it. Uninstalling them is really hard. Many vendors has all the power to have their program stay in your computer!

6. Always turn on your firewall. I suggest you have only one firewall and one anti virus. You get less safer if you have two anti virus running (I know people who likes to have two anti virus programs running on their computer, I don’t know why.)

7. Run anti-spyware programs. I trust spybot, search and destroy and the Adware from Lavasoft. I run SD every week, I do immunize them before I do the the entire program to run. I run adware every week too after I run spybot search and destroy.

8. Run complete scan using your antivirus software at least everyday (some do it once a week). Mine is scheduled at 3:00am everyday.

9. Avoid multi-tasking too much! Meaning to say, avoid opening too many programs all at the same time running at the task bar.

10. I also suggest you get a dual hard drive (which I know is now common in the market), one for the operating system only and the other for all the programs, database and files. This way, the computer boots on one hard drive.

11. Also check the performance of your computer when connected on the internet. Go to control panel >network and internet connections >network connections >right click the mouse on the connection available (e.g. local area connection connected , firewalled )>click on STATUS . Make sure on the status tab, you will see the speed (mine is always 100 mbps). The packets sent and the packets received must not have a very high difference. If it is sending too much packets (as in ten times) than it receive (then try to do number 7!).

12. Always make sure you install the latest updates on your computer.

13. Always make sure all devices (drivers, etc) are properly functioning. Go to control panel >performance and maintenance >system >hardware >click on DEVICE MANAGER. You will see all the devices and adapters available on your computer. Make sure you don’t see a yellow question mark (?) or this means there is an error on that device or adapter. If so, you need to update it or install the right drivers. Updated firmware might also be needed.

14. Browsing the internet? well, I have my google toolbar installed on my computer and is my default search engine. Their pop up blocker is really great!

15. A memory of at least 512 RAM might be a good idea installed on your computer

There you go, 15 steps! Good luck!

Parent Landlords - A Good Option?

As ever there are pros and cons. Let’s take a look at some of the major points you should take into account.

Background

According to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), the buy to let market is a major industry in its own right , with 90% of students living in rented accomodation.

Property inflation, according to the Halifax, has been 88% in university towns compared to 83% generaly.

In addition, rental income varies between different universities and, for example, the distance of the property from the university, but circa £200-240 per month can be expected per room.

These factors have tempted many parents to explore the opportunity presented by student buy to let.

How To Purchase

There are hundreds of buy to let mortgages available at any one time. However, you need to make sure that you use a specialist lender who are aware of this type of loan’s requirements.

Ideally the student should purchase the property, with the parent acting as guarantor (if you are happy with an 18 year old owning it).

This means that:

- the eventual sale will be exempt from Capital Gains Tax as the property is viewed as being the student’s principal residence

- letting income from other students in the property should cover the mortgage cost

- check your tax position in relation to the available rent a room relief of £4,250 each year, together with the students own personal tax allowance of £5,035 per annum. This means it is possible for the first £9,285 per annum of rental income to be free of tax (if the student is not earning)

You can check the Government’s own website for more details:

www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/pimmanual/PIM4001.htm http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/pimmanual/PIM4001.htm

- lastly, you will typically require a 15-25% deposit

Type Of Property

- a typical house is a 3 bed semi with 2 receptions, with one of these to be used as a bedroom

- make sure that each bedroom is at least 70sq.ft, as students like to study in their own rooms

- central heating is essential

- conventionaly designed/constructed is usually best

- no more than 2 miles from the university

- good parking and security

- simple to maintain garden

- good general location re transport/amenities

- ideally, fill the rooms with your child’s friends

- think of the implications of the property once your child has left university

Of course many buyers will have the same thoughts as you, and good properties will not be available on the cheap so you should expect competition.

Also beware oversupply, particularly with regard to housing associations building new student accommodation blocks.

Prepare to become an expert on the area you are considering.

Visit www.landlords.org.uk http://www.landlords.org.uk for more tips and ideas

Other Tips

- ensure furnishings and decoration are in good order

- provide a good sized kitchen with a big fridge freezer,a good shower and of course broadband/T.V.

- get a good tenancy agreement and use a solicitor

- be up to date with the Housing Act Regulations and all safety issues such as gas, electricity and furniture

- be aware of the costs including repairs and wear and tear

- shop around for insurance for buildings, contents you own and public liability (there are specialist companies for these) - check that there will be no council tax as this is the only residence for the students (they should be exempt)

- remember that there may be times when a student doesn’t pay and occasions when there are gaps in tenancy

- when students are not in residence re holidays, some landlords charge 1/2 rent

- if you decide to use an agency to look after the property and collect the rent (you don’t want to be up fixing a boiler at 3 in the morning), ask them for references in advance

The above is by no means an exhaustive look at student buy to let, and if you are going to leap - think, and think again.

The Financial Tips Bottom Line:

Do your research and homework and remember to see this as a long term investment: there’s no reason why you can’t continue to rent the property once your son or daughter has left university.

Happy investing!

Using the Life Cycle in Your Writing

Life is said to evolve in three stages. Creation, survival and destruction. Similar to the life cycle of birth, life, death, and resurrection, these cycles should be reflected in your writing.

In the first part of a story, a character may be creating a career, a new love, a new relationship, a new home, or a new family. In the middle of the book, she is just trying to survive and make ends meet. After getting burnt out, the character might go through a mid-life crisis and walk off from a job, a marriage, or a family, seemingly destroying all she has built. But this is where the cycle of life, birth, death, and resurrection repeats itself. The character intuitively senses she has died inside and wants to reinvent herself to experience the feelings of creation again. On the other hand, you might start your story at the death cycle. That is, the point in the story that the character runs off from her old stifling life.

Have an idea of cause/effect, and understand the relationships of the different characters, and your story will fit together in a unified whole. If not, the story will seem episodic.

Your story should have layers like the concentric rings in a tree. The bark is the outer story; the inner rings are the inner life of your characters, their social/interpersonal life, and their relationship to the world.

Your novel should have branches: your subplots which mirror your main plot.

Your novel should have roots: the things that ground the main character(s) or the backstory, which motivates the characters.

Your novel should bear fruit: your theme.

Remember. The worst writing is often published, applauded and celebrated-that is, fiction that assumes no risk on the part of the writer. This type of writing makes the reader comfortable about the world he lives in and does not challenge any of his assumptions about life. Unfortunately, good fiction often deals with moral ambivalence, no pat answers. It often ends with the wrong or ambiguous choices, resulting in no clear cut triumphs or happy-ever-after Hollywood endings, but haunting, sometimes disturbing resolutions. I think of the endings of Morrison’s Beloved, Song of Solomon, and Sula, and I’ll never forget how it took me years to see the realism in these endings.

The theme of resurrection has always surfaced in literature. On a global level, this has translated into people reinventing their lives. This is why we’re seeing so many second careers. This is what this book is a part of for me-a second career and a brand new life. This is my resurrection. Please use it to re-create yourself. Learn to write riveting fiction. May you ever be in a creative mold in your writing.

Creative Commons Champion, Ed The Editor!

Copyright according to Ed the Editor

As an on-line satirist it is hard to keep a straight face, but seriously, folks, we strive to abide by copyright laws. In fact, we champion the ethos of Creative Commons licensing and will aim to deal fairly with creators of multimedia material. It isn’t hard to be fair with material that is out in the public domain or exists with some fair and reasonable licensing restrictions, such as an attribution and/or non-commercial license.

To cover attribution, we would send an email and/or place a link back to a commercially oriented page on the author’s website where they can make money off their own back.

For non-commercial use, we would pay with a bio/profile webpage and lots of google-friendly keywords to drive traffic from our website to the creators’ commercially-oriented web site.

Anything beyond that, we aren’t interested in, or capable, or willing to cow tow to the copyright system. Copyright, whilst important, has become a web of deceit in many cases, and we can’t play games, we have the pee to take.

Less seriously, but valid.

Original material we can access on the www without a password should be deemed freely available. We should be allowed to use and reproduce it, as is, without a need to pay up.

Plagiarizing or taking something as our own, without the consent of the copyright holder is different - we arent clever enough to do it ourselves - and we don’t condone it either.

Copyright should not be a usable weapon after the fact!

If you don’t want a photo to be reproduced on the internet without permission, please publish it behind closed doors or as thumbnails, in the first place.

We say this because most owners of photos never had any commercial use or intentions for photos placed in public galleries. So by definition, no copyright should really exist forbidding an enterprising website owner from simply copying (not altering, or taking it as their own, just copying) that DIY image or creation and placing it on their own website, to use as part of their own material.

Crediting the creator, not themselves, for its existence, would be the correct thing to do in this case, of course. What doesn’t strike us as correct is for that DIY-er to claim commercial costs if someone else tries to be creative and in the process makes the DIY-er’s snapshot famous.

Fair Use

A copy of a blockbuster movie found on the internet is not original material, so that breaks all copyright law and should not be distributed by anyone - in its entirety. But published snippets should come under Fair use, because those snippets are a crap product, like selling chicken bones without any meat on them.

It shouldn’t be a legal requirement either, to pay if you want to post images or video snippets of films or TV shows. That should be deemed Fair Use too of another basically crap, incomplete product. Links back to the copyright holders’ full value-for-money offering should be sufficient compensation, especially as highlights tend to wet people’s appetites for more of the real thing, creating a new customer for the TV producers.

Unfair world

Of course what should and what does happen are miles apart. People can’t be trusted to even post links to MGM, let alone recognise the efforts of some obscure photo-blogger in China. So we acknowledge there is no place for anarchy or the trust system, hence our belief in Creative Commons Licensing.

Home Equity Lines Of Credit For Starting Your Own Business

All the initial steps for starting your own business can easily be financed with the funds obtained from a home equity line of credit and the flexibility for repayment will provide you with the ease you need to concentrate specifically on your business instead on repaying the loan.

The characteristics of home equity lines of credit are perfect for this purpose.

In this article we will analyze the concepts of home equity and home equity lines of credit and explain why these particular lines of credit are perfect tools for starting new businesses and what the benefits that these financial products provide are.

Defining Equity

Equity is the difference between the current value of your property and any pecuniary obligations that it is guaranteeing. These obligations can be liens, mortgages, etc. The amount of available equity is obtained by subtracting the amount of the outstanding obligations to the valuation price of the property.

Thus, if you own a property that is worth $120,000 and your current mortgage balance is around $70,000 that means that you still have $50,000 of available equity on your home that you can use for obtaining a loan or line of credit and use it for any purpose you can think of. Following we will analyze home equity lines of credit for starting businesses.

Lines Of Credit for Businesses

Lines of credit are revolving sources of funds that can provide you with all the finance you need for starting a business if they are based on sufficient equity. The idea is that you are granted credit up to a certain amount limit which is guaranteed with your home equity. In the above example you would count with up to $50,000 on your line of credit to start your own business.

There is no need for you to withdraw the whole amount and as long as you don’t request money, the line of credit won’t generate interests. You’ll only have to pay a small maintenance fee.

Moreover, say you withdraw $10,000, the interest rate will only be charged over that $10,000. Once you repay the amount, it will stop generating interests and you can withdraw that amount or any amount up to the credit limit whenever you want.

As regards repayment, it is also very simple. You will only be required to repay a minimum amount every month, just like with credit cards. This minimum almost always consists on the interests and sometimes a small portion of the principal. This provides you with a lot of flexibility.

When starting a business you can’t be suffering pressure from lenders because you need to concentrate on generating income rather than repaying a loan. Thus, home equity lines of credit provide you with all the finance you need and don’t asphyxiate your business with high monthly payments.

Once your running business generates enough income for you to cope with higher payments, you can start repaying the principal at your best convenience. Moreover, you can easily fix the interest rate (that is otherwise always variable) and turn the home equity line of credit into a home equity loan.

Putting Together The Ultimate Halloween Costume

If you’re going to have a great Halloween, you’ll want to have a theme in mind. Are you thinking of something glamorous? Scary? Sexy? You might even be planning to go to more than one party, and want a different type of costume for each one.

If there’s a party at your office, a sexy, glamorous outfit may not be the best fit. At the same time, you might want to be a little less subdued at your best friend’s bash.

Once you’ve decided on what kind of theme(s) you want, a good costume shop will be your best bet for pulling it together. Are you going to buy a costume or rent one? You probably won’t want to wear the same costume year after year, so you might be leaning towards a rental but you can buy costumes at reasonable prices these days - especially on the internet - so even if you only wear it this year it might still pay off.

Impressive costumes really always come down to the small details. If you’re hoping that people won’t recognize you when you arrive at the party, the details are critical.

A spooky monster mask might create a decent illusion, but spending the time and effort to use real theatrical makeup will make the illusion at lot more effective. With a little extra effort, nobody will be able to recognize you.

When you’re out looking (or online surfing) for the perfect costume, spend the time to find a costume shop that has everything you need. Don’t settle for a shop that doesn’t really have what you’re looking for, or doesn’t have it all.

You’ll want to choose a shop that not only offers the costume itself, but all the makeup and other accessories you want to complete your disguise. Going the extra distance will make for a more complete costume, and you’ll be a lot happier with the results.
