An Understanding Of Moore’s Law

It’s plain to see that the computing speed found in the personal computers of today has been steadily picking up steam since the market began. Many wonder when our technology will begin to taper off, but according to a man named Gordon Moore, we’re only beginning to tap the potential of what we can do with our computer systems.

Gordon Moore was a co-founder of the popular Intel brand. Aside from this substantial title, Moore is most commonly known due to his assertion of what became known as Moore’s law. In the April, 1965 issue of Electronics Magazine, Moore put forth his beliefs about semiconductors:

The complexity for minimum component costs has increased at a rate of roughly a factor of two per year … Certainly over the short term this rate can be expected to continue, if not to increase. Over the longer term, the rate of increase is a bit more uncertain, although there is no reason to believe it will not remain nearly constant for at least 10 years. That means by 1975, the number of components per integrated circuit for minimum cost will be 65,000. I believe that such a large circuit can be built on a single wafer.

Surely, when he said it, Moore had no idea how significant his assertion was. The statement was taken to heart by a Caltech professor by the name of Carver Mead, who dubbed the belief Moore’s Law . In 1975, Moore stated that he believed his equation would continue to hold true, save the fact that it would take 2 years for a doubling of the computing power. His statement was made based off of what he had seen in the market so far and what he predicted it to do. Making the announcement may have actually helped to push computer scientists to follow and achieve the goal throughout the years. Clearly, the manufacturers have been meeting that goal. Questions arise, however, about the theory’s validity in the coming years. Moore himself has stated that the size of the transistors that we are building cannot get much smaller unless we figure out a significant method of changing the process. He still believes that we will continue to progress for the next 10 to 20 years at the same rate, but is curious as to where computing can go from there. At Moore’s rate, it would place machines capable of processing 100 gigahertz of information per second in our houses as soon as 10 years from now.

Eliminating Skunk Odor From Your Dog

A skunk’s spray is one of the most unpleasant odors there is to a human’s nose. Putting your dog outside in the yard, hearing a commotion and finding out a skunk has sprayed your pet is not only terrible but also very smelly. A skunk’s spray is yellowy oil, which they spray or mist from up to almost twenty feet away when they feel like they are in danger. Many dogs end up sprayed because they try to defend their property and the skunk usually wins.

The first words of advice are ‘do not bring your dog inside after it has been skunked’ as it will take forever to get the smell out of your house. The skunk odor will permeate anything porous such as beds, sofas, towels, untreated wood and plasterboard. Check your pet’s eyes to see if the skunk got spray in them. If it did your dog’s eyes will appear red. This sometimes causes temporary blindness that usually lasts from ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse your dog’s eyes with a saline solution or use eye-drops for a human or olive oil, to help relieve the eye irritation. Take your pet to the veterinarian if the dogs’ eyes continue to be red or irritated.

The treatment you use on your dog is far more effective if you do it before the skunks spray has had a chance to dry on your pet. The first order of business is putting on old clothes and rubber gloves, that you will not feel bad about, if you throw them away after. Do not shampoo the whole dog, just the area affected, as you do not want the odor spreading onto the rest of your pet. Before you grab the tomato juice, be aware that it will not remove the skunk odor, just mask it.

Here is a concoction that successfully works at eliminating that terrible skunk odor on your pet. In a large open bowl or container, pour in one quart of three percent hydrogen peroxide, one teaspoon of any type of liquid dishwashing soap and one-quarter cup of baking soda or sodium bicarbonate. When mixed together, the mixture foams and this is the best time to use it. Hydrogen peroxide is available in drug stores and some people feel that joy dishwashing detergent works the best. There are commercial skunk deodorizer removers available but they do not always do a good job.

While the mixture is still foaming, wet down the area of the dog that the skunk sprayed. After leaving the lather in the fur up to ten minutes, use tap water to rinse this area thoroughly. Repeat this if necessary. For dogs sprayed in the face by a skunk, very carefully apply the mixture with a cloth, making sure to keep it out of your pets’ eyes, nose and mouth. Make this solution only when you need it and always discard the unused solution, after you mix it together, as it will explode if covered or stored.

If the skunk sprayed your house or fence etc, there are commercial products available to remove the skunk odor. To keep skunks from wanting in your yard, make sure the garbage pails lids fit tightly, do not keep dog food outside and close any spaces that makes a comfortable place for skunks to live, such as under cement steps.

Kelly Marshall hates skunk odor. But she loves shopping at www.ohmydogsupplies.com http://www.ohmydogsupplies.com to find really cool dog gear that isn’t sold at the local pet store.

Culture Shock !

Welcome to your new country. You’re come here for fun, excitement, change, challenge, and perhaps money. Will the locals speak your language? I’m not trying to scare you, but perhaps they won’t. Will some people there speak your language, oh most definitely. This is only one of the things that you may have to think about when you plan on going to a new country.

Culture shock is an interesting phenomenon that doesn’t affect everyone the same way. Some just can’t understand it when the locals don’t speak English. Some can’t comprehend why there aren’t any English signs anywhere to be found. Why are things done this way, and not that way? Why am I even in this situation? It would never happen in my home country. Questions like these can cause people to get stressed out and want to go back to their own countries. People can get frustrated when faced with change. Many people deal with it their own way, head back home.

In 1998, I traveled to Taiwan. I never once felt that I suffered from culture shock, personally. I always felt it was more like culture fascination rather than culture shock. I was amazed with everything that I saw and encountered. But I still had many questions. For instance, why aren’t there English street signs on the corner of every intersection? I felt that they would be very helpful for me and also for other people from English speaking countries. What I didn’t think about was that the people that live there can read the signs just fine, and it certainly isn’t necessary for them to change them all just for me. A friend of mine had a girlfriend that hated everything about Taiwan and couldn’t understand why it was different from her home in San Francisco. She hated the people, hated the food, hated the smells, hated the transportation, all because it was different from San Francisco. I asked her if she hated everything so much, why doesn’t she just leave. I cared about Taiwan and its people and to be completely honest, I didn’t want to hear any more of her complaining. She ended up leaving eventually, but after many more complaints. This is what happens to some people, they can’t adjust to their new environment properly.

Others suffer from a much more realistic and understandable reason, homesickness. It’s easy to miss your family, your friends, and your familiar stomping grounds. For people that decide to go overseas, they have to stay focused, enjoy themselves, and be strong. Yes, this new place isn’t like home. Yes, this new place is strange and different. No, your friends and family aren’t here. This was one of the biggest challenges that I had ever faced and I thrived on it.

Another factor involved can be diet. The foods that you’re used to eating may not be available in this new location. You may have to actually try something different. Believe me, this is a good thing. Trying new things will also be a test for you. Try the food that the locals eat everyday. It’s obviously not bad for you, or these people wouldn’t be eating it themselves. I have to laugh to myself when I hear about people going to Taiwan and eating McDonald’s all the time.

The culture in your new destination will obviously be different when compared to where you’re from. Things they say and do will most likely also be different. When I was in Taiwan, it was generally accepted for people to ask others how much money they made. In Canada, this is just an awkward question that is rarely asked, even amongst close friends. Actually, now that I think back to that time, I felt uncomfortable every single time I was asked my rate of pay. I was asked quite frequently and I never actually gave up that information to my inquisitors.

As I mentioned previously, culture shock affects different people different ways. I knew a guy who went to Taiwan; he was originally planning on staying for a year. He lasted 5 days. In my opinion, this small amount of time is not enough to give a fair evaluation of the country. But that’s me, and that was his decision, not mine. I just goes to show you that people are different. Don’d be worried about how culture shock is going to affect you, just buy a book and read a bit about your destination. Nothing will totally prepare you for what you’re about to discover. Enjoy yourself and make the absolute most of your experience. Don’t fear culture shock, embrace it.

Start A Home Day Care Business

Did you know the demand for professional childcare providers would increase 12% by 2012? As more and more parents search for reliable, quality childcare, the need will continue to grow! That means career opportunity for you!

You can start a home day care business with a minimal investment. This is a great business opportunity for anybody that loves kids, and wants to turn it into a career. In addition to the minimal investment that is needed, you will also already have the space for your kids being that you will be running your business out of your home. All in all, a home day care business is one of the best opportunities to make a lot of money without having to spend tons of it up front.

If you are gong to start a home day care business you need to make sure that you are aware of every last detail. Remember, you will be taking care of other people’s children. If anything happens to them you will be responsible. So the best way to avoid this is by simply getting everything lined up from the very beginning.

The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that your house is safe enough to run a home day care business. In other words, do you have the room to house all of the children without posing a threat to their safety? You should have a designated area in your home that you can run your home day care business out of. Never try to turn your entire home into the day care. This will only make a mess, and make it much more difficult for you to keep track of everything that is going on.

Also, your home needs to be child proof. You cannot have anything that may harm the children that you are watching. This includes things such as stairs that they could fall down, or small items that they could choke on. This is why having a designated area for your home day care business is of the utmost importance.

After you have your home set up, you need to make sure that you have all of the proper certificates and insurance in order to run a business out of your home. Many people overlook this, and end up running into big problems down the line. Do not let this happen to you. Get in touch with the appropriate people in your area and ask them what you need to do in order to set up a home day care business. More than likely your local municipality will be able to give you the information that you need in order to get started.

Starting a home day care business can be very profitable, and quite fun if you love children. Just make sure that before you start your home day care business that you have all of the loose ends tied up. This will ensure your chances of success as your business grows. Remember, as a day care owner you will have a rewarding, challenging career where you’ll see the results of your caring and creative efforts every day.

Tips for you Cross Country Road Trip

Driving cross country, it’s considered the ultimate road trip. Having the independence of seeing the Country in a way that is not possible by taking a plane is a very satisfying and liberating experience. The drive can also be a tough one. For those who haven’t driven for long periods of time, the trip can be grueling unless you’re mentally and physically prepared. I have made the trip four times, each time getting easier gaining experience of the do’s and don’ts related to the drive. Your trip needs to be well planned out starting with what time of the year you want to travel to how much weight is in the car. These factors will seriously affect your trip and can determine how long it will take you to get to your destination.

In my experience, spring and fall are best for traveling. Your car will perform better in milder weather; you’ll burn less oil and get better gas mileage not running your air conditioner if traveling in the summer heat which is extremely hard on your car, and you’ll also avoid ice and snow if traveling in the winter. Roads are a lot rougher in the winter since icy roads and snow take their toll creating potholes and other road hazards.

Milder weather will also make your trip easier if you happen to blow out a tire or run into some car trouble. Sitting in a car that does not start in the heat of the summer or cold of winter is not fun. If you happen to breakdown, you can still enjoy being outdoors while waiting for assistance.

Checking your tires for correct pressure and foreign objects like nails or worn treads is a necessity before starting your journey. If you see anything out of the ordinary on your tires, have them checked or replaced by a mechanic before the trip. And of course, you absolutely must check your spare. Your spare will be a life saver if you blow a tire in the middle of nowhere. Next, an oil change. During the course of the 3000 plus miles you’ll be driving, you’ll have used up the recommended duration of a normal oil change interval in a matter of a few days. A few extra quarts of oil is a good idea if your car is burning more than normal amount of oil. In the same category as oil, the other vital fluids in your car should be checked; radiator, brake, power steering and even windshield wiper fluid must be checked and filled if low.

Now that your car is in shape to make the journey, you need to pack for the trip. Depending on who is traveling with you, there are a few options to consider. Comfortable clothes like sweats are ideal since you’ll be sitting for long periods of time. Having a light weatherproof jacket is also needed. Flashlight, batteries, a gallon of water are a must have. Getting a gas card is something to look into, having a separate card that is not in your wallet but in your glove compartment is a smart idea just in case you happen to loose your wallet, you can still buy gas and get to your destination.

Feel Healthier– it Doesn’t Take Very Much!

In America we have become very fat. Our terrible diets have created our lard filled tummies. Although not everyone in the country is large, most of us could probably afford to drop some pounds.

We absolutely should! Becoming a size or two smaller will work wonders for your well being. The fact of the matter is that none of us can reach the high expectations society puts on us so we simply give up on our health. Regulating one’s eating is such a hassle! We would all love to look thin, well proportioned, and strong. Of course, our ideas about how we think we should look are rarely achievable. There are ways to improve our looks, however small.

Many of us think we will never lose as much as we want. Whatever diet or fad we choose, we probably won’t be able to whittle our hulking bodies into super model frames.

But being America’s Next Top Model isn’t the only way to get healthy. You can lose a smaller amount of weight and greatly improve your overall health. You aren’t going to be required to go on an extreme crackers-and-tuna diet or to run fourteen miles a day to get healthy! If you weigh too much for your frame, you will probably feel sluggish and unmotivated. Then your activity level will drop and you will be a less happy person.

Consider your day to day life. How can you make small alterations that will spice up the nutrition in your diet and make you more active?

Begin your examination of your life with your mornings. What do you do when you wake up in the morning? Do you stretch your arms or legs or do you simply fall into the bathroom? It’s a good idea to strech as that gets the muscles working.

One of my favorite ways to begin the day is a healthy breakfast. If you’ve been skipping out on this important meal, you have been depriving your metabolism of a jump-start it requires to begin burning fat all day.

Do you live close to your work? Maybe you should ride your bike to work. If your house isn’t near your place of business, maybe you should park your car a a little bit away from your office to give you an opportunity to walk.

Drinking more water is an easy way to improve one’s health. Everyone needs 64 ounces of water per day to keep his or her body working properly and metabolizing food. Plus, it’s delicious!

Be sure to eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. These items make perfect side items in meals. They are stuffed full of important minerals, vitamins, and other health-producing vitals. A salad per day with a low-fat dressing is a great way to achieve this. Depending on the season, you might want to bring an orange with you to work every day.

The amount of times you eat per day is just as important as the portions of your meals. Eating several small meals per day is a sure way to boost your metabolism and keep you using fat fat at a regular rate. If you don’t kick your metabolism into gear, your body will not be energized. On top of that, you will turn whatever food you do eat into fat, rather than burning the calories you consume.

Constantly eating sugary, fried, or high-carbohydrate foods has a twofold consequence: it fills you up so that you don’t want to munch on any healthy food and it sticks right to your trouble spots, causing weight gain. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to give up chocolate cake for good! Put these foods on your sometimes list and don’t allow yourself to eat them constantly.

Eating a well balanced diet and staying active are the two keys to a long life and a healthy body. This does not require a complete lifestyle revision. Taking small steps in each of these areas is a great way to start getting healthy!

Sicko - The Future of American Healthcare

Let me start by saying I’ve never been a Michael Moore fan. Being a libertarian Conservative all my voting life, I’ve always been opposed to “Socialized” medicine. However, firsthand experience in the healthcare business for the last 17 years has shown me that our system of health care (much like our tax system and education system) is broken beyond repair.

Michael Moore’s latest movie “Sicko” should be a wake-up call for insurance companies, the pharmaceutical industry and the AMA. The movie starts out showing what can happen to working class Americans without health insurance, citing the story of a man who cut off the tip of two fingers in a work accident. Because he had no insurance and would be paying cash, he was given the choice of having one fingertip replaced for $12,000 or the other for $60,000. What kind of choice could that possibly be? Of course, he chose to save the less expensive of the two. The movie went on to show the fate of a couple who had worked all their life, bought insurance through their employers. Three heart attacks and a bout of cancer left the couple bankrupt and virtually homeless despite their insurance coverage.

The movie goes on to compare American health care systems and those in Canada, England and France. And while I was somewhat put off by Moore’s veiled support of socialism, the viewer can only come to the conclusion that our and their health care systems don’t compare very well. Almost any American health care consumer will relate to the hassles of dealing with insurance companies, exclusions and long waits in the Emergency Room and wonder if there isn’t a better way. Even respected medical journals report that Americans’ have shorter lifespan, higher infant mortality rates and more cancer, heart disease and diabetes than the rest of the industrialized world. The final comparison of the care rendered to Guantanamo detainees and that give to three American volunteers at the 9/11 WTC site.

While one knows that “Sicko” was made with a bias in favor of a universal health care system, Moore makes the valid impression that the system is broken and, like Humpty Dumpty, can’t be put back together again. As a healthcare provider, I’ve dealt firsthand with the Managed Care nonsense. The movie is not far off, at all.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m not a fan of big government solutions to market problems. However, the free market does NOT govern the American health care system. Between the AMA, the pharmaceutical cartel and the insurance industry, access to health care is limited. Not only does that put upward pressure on prices, but lends itself to market manipulation. The higher prices go the more consumers are forced to buy health insurance EVEN with ever-increasing premiums and routine reductions in coverage. It’s a spiral that feeds on itself and will eventually lead to collapse.

For those who would say, “We can’t afford universal health care”, it should be noted that between Medicare and Medicaid we ALREADY have (almost) universal health care. The only group left out of America’s government funded health care is a large percentage of the working class and the self-employed. Conservatives should take another look at a single-payer health care system for a variety of reasons. Rising health care costs is a major reason American business is less competitive in the global marketplace. Further, the aging baby boomer generation will soon be eligible for Medicare. When that happens, subsequent generations of Americans will demand either relief from the burden of paying for that extra care OR be included in the system themselves. My guess is that it will be both. The party that resolves THAT problem will probably rule the political roost for decades to come.

Michael Moore has hit the nail on the head. The American health care system is broken. The harder entrenched institutions try to limit the public’s access to basic health care, the sooner and more certain will Americans’ will demand a dramatic change in the way health care is delivered. The AMA should drop its resistance to alternative and complementary therapies. Pharmaceutical companies should embrace the concept that American citizens should not pay more for their drugs than do citizens of other countries. Finally, the insurance industry should build long-term profitability by finding a way to cover as many Americans as possible, giving them access to any willing provider and open to alternative and complementary health care options. IF the market doesn’t resolve this problem, it’s an almost certainty the government will.

Toyoto Introduces The Toy: The First Pedal Car For Adults

In an effort to rescue drivers from the high cost of gasoline, Toyota has announced the introduction of the Toy, the first car for grownups that is operated like a child’s pedal car.

Its main benefit is, of course, that it requires no gas. There is, however, a limit as to how far the vehicle can travel on one adult’s leg power.

The resourceful auto giant maintains that the encumbrance is not a drawback at all, because adults can change places at the wheel. While one pedals, the other can rest.

The company also proclaims that the new car is the first that “conditions you while you drive.” As a result, it claims that the vehicle will benefit all purchasers with improved heart health, greater longevity and, most vital of all, increased energy to pedal all the farther.

“We view the Toy as our most advanced product,” the chairman of Toyota avowed. “It’s way out in front of even our own hybrids in term of fuel efficiency, and it saves a lot of steps in the production of ethanol. Now, drivers need only eat corn and soy beans to generate energy to propel the vehicle.”

One of the first owners of the Toy was ecstatic. “I can’t tell you how good it feels to pedal past a gas station and know you no longer have to pull in and empty your wallet. But pedaling for miles can take some getting used to. When I work up a sweat, I’m really happy that the Toy comes with air conditioning. I just reach out and start to crank the dashboard-mounted fan.”

Are Middle Aged Men More Prone to Heart Disease?

For years, heart disease has been associated most prominently with middle aged men. However, recent studies have put this myth to rest. Dr. Robert Beaglehole , WHO Director of Chronic Diseases and Health Promotion, states that the old stereotype of cardiovascular diseases affecting only stressed, overweight, middle-aged men in developed countries no longer applies. In fact the burden has shifted from gender to economics– men, women, even children are at risk because 80% of those at risk come from low and middle-income families where healthy dietary and lifestyle habits are difficult to maintain. The emphasis in heart disease risk factors has shifted away from genetic disposition to lifestyle and diets. What this means is that no one is immune from heart disease because of gender and age. What it also means is that everyone has the ability to prevent heart disease by initiating active lifestyle changes.

At the bottom of this shift in attitude is a new understanding of the mechanism behind heart disease. Recent research suggests that atherosclerosis resulting from elevated cholesterol levels in the blood is not the major contributor to heart problems as once thought because half of the people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels. Moreover, improved imaging techniques show that plague formation is not as critical in coronary fatalities as once assumed.

The culprit behind coronary events is now understood to be inflammation. Blood tests that measure C-reactive proteins (CPR) as prediction of heart attack are receiving a great deal of attention these days because elevated levels of this protein indicate active inflammation of the arteries. In fact, studies have shown that healthy middle-aged men with the highest CPR levels were 3 times as likely to suffer a heart attack in the next 6 years than those with the lowest CPR levels.

Think of inflammation as a double-edged sword: it enables the body’s immune system to defend itself against invading pathogens; if not turned off, it becomes the culprit that turns the body’s immune system against itself. The aftereffects of this unnatural chronic inflammation is more and more viewed by researchers to be the underlying cause not only of coronary problems, but of diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes.

What does this new shift in thinking mean in terms of prevention?

a) Dr. Andrew Weil In Healthy Aging suggests that diet influences inflammation and strongly proposes that we adopt an anti-inflammatory diet that is rich in omega-3, fish, phytonutrients and low in sugar, high-glycemic carbohydrates and red meat. Such a diet would also reduce excess body fat and obesity-both contributing factors towards diabetes and heart disease.

b) Moderate aerobic and strength-training exercises that tone the heart muscle and improve the elasticity of arteries are also recommended as exercise increases mood enhancing endorphins and reduces stress which can cause cardiac arrhythmias.

c) Stop Smoking. The risk of heart attack in smokers is more than double that of non-smokers.

d) Lower blood pressure with breathwork. Dr. David Anderson at the US National Institute of Health suggests that how we breathe may hold the key to how the body regulates blood pressure. Slow breathing not only elicits relaxation response but may also be able to break down the salt we eat. Excess salt is related to hypertension. Meditation and guided imagery visualization are all tools that expand on the use of breathwork.

e) New FDA regulation that requires nutrition labeling to clearly state how much trans fat a product contains will also do much to raise public consciousness of the perils of trans fat. At the same time, public campaigns to identify foods that lower LDL cholesterol are also underway. An example is the new cholesterol-lowering margarines that are fortified with plant sterols that block cholesterol absorption.

Heart disease is no longer the disease of overweight, highly stressed middle-aged men. All of us are empowered to view coronary problems as something we can change through lifestyle and dietary intervention. We can no longer hide behind the myth of genetic disposition or family history which unfortunately incapacitates us by indulging our excuse that we are victims of our physiology and that nothing can be done.
