It’s impossible to speak accurately about prices and the game economy at this point since no one but Flagship has played it enough to judge, and even then the prices, spawn rate, world of warcraft gold difficult, and everything else is changing constantly. wow gold In my play time I found that the inventory and the item drop rate balanced pretty well early on. By clvl 6 or 7 though, as the levels got larger, I was finding more loot than I could carry and filling up before I finished a level or finished the quest/task I’d gone to that level to perform. I didn’t much bother with picking up stuff to sell since I knew I wasn’t playing that long, but I did do a bit of comparison shopping and made a few return trips to town just to unload my inventory. The only real use I had for palladium was trying out the gamble modifier machine in town, but that’s always the case during a quick play session at Flagship’s offices or on a demo machine at a gaming show. If I’d had longer to play I would have sold everything I found and saved up palladium and evaluated items carefully.

As most everyone has seen in gameplay movies, palladium is picked up automatically in Hellgate: London. You can click “F” to pick up coin stacks, but you’ll do it automatically when you move near it anyway. I often clicked, since palladium would drop along with potions and an item or two, and I needed to hit “F” to pick them up. Items are automatically slotted into your inventory, and it’s a minor thing, but I hope they improve the way that feature is handled before release. As it was I constantly filled up my inventory, opened up the window, and found that I had a ton of space remaining since things had been packed so poorly.

Items are odd shapes in Hellgate: London. Revolvers are usually 2×2, rifles are 3×2, and swords and tall items are 1×3 or 1×4. Plus you’ve got belts and other small stuff that’s 2×1, and whatever part of the game engine that packs these things doesn’t smooth them in very neatly. I often found a sword or other tall item sticking up right in the middle, with 6 or 10 empty spaces to one side that the rifle on the ground could easily have fit into, with some repositioning.

Economy

In a way I missed the earlier inventory style, when items all took up one square, regardless of how large they were. Back then you got 12 slots for large items and 24 for 1×1 items like mods and recall devices, and didn’t have any bother with Tetrising stuff into position. The Hellgate Team has talked about giving more inventory space with quest rewards, and I certainly hope they do, since I was feeling cramped on inventory space by clvl 6.

These changes can manifest them visually, so that after completing various parts of the storyline you actually see world physically differently due to events you triggered. NPCs might also react to you differently. “Depending on what you’ve completed in the storyline, there will be actual changes in the world that you notice. If I’m level 5 and you’re level 30 and you’ve done a lot more stuff, your perception of the world is probably different than mine,” Roper added. He explained that these are atmospheric changes rather than gameplay changes, allowing players to potentially coexist in the same virtual world even if they perceive it differently.

Drawing from games such as Guild Wars and of course Diablo II, Roper admits Hellgate: London’s online component doesn’t necessarily neatly slide into the MMO genre. In many ways, the Diablo series and particularly Diablo II serve as a touchstone for Hellgate. Many of those looking forward to the game were massive fans of Blizzard’s action RPG series, and Roper himself frequently refers to the franchise when talking about his game. Hellgate: London’s main quest storyline is identical in single-player and multiplayer; world of warcraft players can get the full story experience either way. However, the online side will contain exclusive content and modes unavailable in single-player. Unlike most MMOs, the primary storyline is actually finite, and can be completed even in online mode. “You complete the storyline, and get that big overarching sense of completion that you typically don’t get in MMOs,” said Roper. “Then what we do to continue the gameplay past that is to create all these quests you do that take into account that the world state has changed for your character. You’ve completed it, 2moons finished the task that was set before you. The thing that’s really nice about that is that we can create all this online content that you don’t get in single-player that takes into account that you did finish the storyline of the game.”

That said, there are major differences between the games. “The biggest differences between Diablo II online and Hellgate: London are that Hellgate: London has been built from the very beginning to be sustained online as part of the original design, whereas D2 really wasn’t like that at all,” he explained. “We had dreams of being able to do continuing content [in Diablo II] but it really wasn’t possible at all from a code standpoint. Hellgate has been set up to do that from the beginning. The other big difference is that in Diablo II you were in a chat room. Here, it’s like other MMOs: you’re in a town, you are your character, you’re interacting with people and getting quests.
